I'm sorry to hear that, so you might know that it's a very toxic substance,

but you might not know that it's a very simple molecule

with an unpronouncable name:

it's called chlorobenzalmalononitrile.

It's decades old, but it's becoming very trendy among police forces

몇 십 년이 지났지만 최근 전세계 경찰들에게

around the planet lately, it seems,

and according to my experience as a non-voluntary breather of it,

tear gas has two main but quite opposite effects.

One, it can really burn your eyes,

Tear gas definitely helped to open mine to something

that I want to share with you this afternoon:

that livestreaming the power of independent broadcasts through the web

can be a game-changer in journalism,

in activism, and as I see it, in the political discourse as well.

That idea started to dawn on me in early 2011

when I was covering a protest in São Paulo.

It was the marijuana march,

a gathering of people asking for the legalization of cannabis.

When that group started to move,

the riot police came from the back with rubber bullets, bombs,

of sharing the raw experience of what it's like to be there, actually.

So in the following week, I was back in the streets,

but that time, I wasn't a member of any media outlet anymore.

I was there as an independent livestreamer, and all I had with me

was basically borrowed equipment.

I had a very simple camera and a backpack with 3G modems.

And I had this weblink that could be shared through social media,

and that time, the protest went along fine.

There was no violence.

There was no action scenes.

But there was something really exciting,

because I could see at a distance the TV channels covering it,

and they had these big vans and the teams and the cameras,

and I was basically doing the same thing

And that was really exciting to a journalist,

And I learned something else, that that was actually the first time

And that really shocked me,

because I was no geek, I was no technology guy,

and all the equipment needed was already there,

was easily available.

And I realized that we had a frontier here,

a very important one,

that it was just a matter of changing the perspective,

and the web could be actually used,

already used, as a colossal and uncontrollable

and highly anarchical TV channel, TV network,

이미 이용되고 있으며,

and anyone with very basic skills and very basic equipment,

누구나 가장 기본적인 기술과 장비를 가지고 있다면,

even someone like me who had this little stuttering issue,

저같이 말을 더듬는 사람도 할 수 있습니다,

so if it happens, bear with me please,

even someone like me could become a broadcaster.

저같은 사람도 방송을 할 수 있습니다.

And that sounded revolutionary in my mind.

So for the next couple of years,

I started to experiment with livestreaming in different ways,

not only in the streets but mostly in studios and in homes,

until the beginning of 2013, last year,

when I became the cofounder of a group called Mídia NINJA.

NINJA is an acronym

that stands for Narrativas Independentes Jornalismo e Ação,

or in English, independent narratives, journalism, and action.

It was a media group that had little media plan.

We didn't have any financial structure.

우리는 재무적 구조도 만들지 않았습니다.

We were not planning to make money out of this,

우리는 이것을 통해서 이익을 얻을 계획이 없었습니다.

which was wise, because you shouldn't try to make money out of journalism now.

현명한 선택이었죠. 왜냐하면 지금 언론으로 돈을 벌려고 하면 안되니까요.

But we had a very solid and clear conviction,

하지만 우리는 매우 분명한 확신이 있었습니다.

that we knew that the hyperconnected environment of social media

우리가 만들 촘촘히 연결된 소셜미디어 환경이

could maybe allow us to consolidate

전세계의 언론인들의 네트워크를 통합할 수 있을 것이라고 말이죠.

a network of experimental journalists throughout the country.

So we launched a Facebook page first, and then a manifesto,

그래서 먼저 페이스북 페이지를 개설했고 성명을 발표했습니다.

and started to cover the streets in a very simple way.

그리고 아주 간단한 방법으로 거리를 보도했죠.

But then something happened, something that wasn't predicted,

that no one could have anticipated.

Street protests started to erupt in São Paulo.

They began as very local and specific.

They were against the bus fare hike that had just happened in the city.

This is a bus.

It's written there, "Theft."

But those kind of manifestations started to grow,

and they kept happening.

So the police violence against them started to grow as well.

But there was another conflict,

the one I believe that's more important here

to make my point that it was a narrative conflict.

There was this mainstream media version of the facts

국영방송의 보도는

that anyone who was on the streets could easily challenge

그 시위에 있던 사람들은

if they presented their own vision of what was actually happening there.

스스로의 주장을 펼쳤다고 전했지만

And it was this clash of visions, this clash of narratives,

그 곳에는 가치관의 격돌이 있었고, 이야기의 충돌이 있었습니다.

that I think turned those protests

그것이 이 시위를

into a long period in the country of political reckoning

사회적인 긴 기간의 시위로 바꿨습니다.

where hundreds of thousands of people,

수십만의 사람들,

probably more than a million people

아마도 백만이 넘는 사람들이 거리를 점령했습니다.

took to the streets in the whole country.

But it wasn't about the bus fare hike anymore.

하지만 그 시위는 더이상 버스요금에 관한 내용이 아니었습니다.

It was about everything.

그것은 모든것에 대한 시위였습니다.

The people's demands, their expectations,

대중들의 요구, 기대

the reasons why they were on the streets

could be as diverse as they could be contradictory in many cases.

If you could read it, you would understand me.

But it was in this environment of political catharsis

that the country was going through

that it had to do with politics, indeed,

but it had to do also with a new way of organizing,

through a new way of communicating.

It was in that environment that Mídia NINJA emerged

그것은 닌자(NINJA)가 발생한 환경과도 같았습니다.

from almost anonymity to become a national phenomenon,

대부분 익명의 사람들이 범국가적인 현상을 만들죠.

because we did have the right equipment.

왜냐하면 우리는 적절한 장비가 있었으니까요.

We are not using big cameras.

우리는 큰 카메라를 사용하지 않았습니다

We are using basically this.

기본적으로 이것을 사용했죠.

We are using smartphones.

스마트폰입니다.

And that, actually, allowed us to become invisible in the middle of the protests,

시위의 한가운데서 우리를 보호했고

but it allowed us to do something else:

다른 행동을 할 수 있었습니다.

to show what it was like to be in the protests,

시위 그 자체를 담았습니다

to present to people at home a subjective perspective.

주관적인 관점을 가지고 있는 집에 있는 사람들에게 보여줬죠.

But there was something that is more important,

더 중요한 점이 있습니다.

I think, than the equipment.

장비보다 더 중요한 점은 우리의 마음가짐이었습니다.

It was our mindset,

because we are not behaving as a media outlet.

왜냐하면 우리는 미디어의 사고방식을 버렸기 때문이죠.

We are not competing for news.

뉴스에 목매달지 않고

We are trying to encourage people,

사람들에게 용기를 주려고 노력했습니다.

to invite people, and to actually teach people

사람들을 초대하고, 실제로 몇가지를 알려줬죠.

how to do this, how they also could become broadcasters.

이렇게 하는 방법, 어떻게 모두가 방송국이 될 수 있는지를요.

And that was crucial to turn Mídia NINJA from a small group of people,

이것이 몇주 동안에 소규모 그룹이었던 닌자(NINJA) 가 변한 큰 이유입니다.

and in a matter of weeks,

we multiplied and we grew exponentially throughout the country.

규모가 커졌고 나라 전체로 번져갔습니다.

So in a matter of a week or two, as the protests kept happening,

시위가 계속됬던 1~2주 동안에,

we were hundreds of young people

우리는 몇백명의 젊은 사람들이었고

connected in this network throughout the country.

We were covering more than 50 cities at the same time.

That's something that no TV channel could ever do.

That was responsible for turning us suddenly, actually,

into kind of the mainstream media of social media.

So we had a couple of thousands of followers on our Facebook page,

and soon we had a quarter of a million followers.

Our posts and our videos

were being seen by more than 11 million timelines a week.

It was way more than any newspaper or any magazine could ever do.

And that turned Mídia NINJA into something else,

more than a media outlet, than a media project.

It became almost like a public service

to the citizen, to the protester,

to the activist,

공공서비스화 되었습니다.

because they had a very simple and efficient and peaceful tool

왜냐하면 그들은 미디어권력에 대항하기 위한

to confront both police and media authority.

효과적이고 평화적인 서비스를 가지지 못했었기 때문이죠

Many of our images started to be used in regular TV channels.

우리의 이미지들이 기존 TV에 사용되기 시작했고,

Our livestreams started to be broadcast even in regular televisions

우리의 생방송이 인용되기도 했습니다.

when things got really rough.

상황을 파악하기 어려울때 말이죠.

Some our images were responsible to take some people out of jail,

몇몇의 자료들은 부당하게 구속당한 사람들을 석방시키는데 사용됐습니다

people who were being arrested unfairly

under false accusations, and we could prove them innocent.

우리는 그들이 무죄임을 증명할 수 있었죠.

And that also turned Mídia NINJA very soon

그것이 우리를 경찰의 적으로 만들었습니다.

to be seen as almost an enemy of cops, unfortunately,

불행하게도, 우리는 억압됐고

and we started to be severely beaten, and eventually arrested on the streets.

It happened in many cases.

But that was also useful, because we were still at the web,

and finally consolidated itself in what we hoped it would become:

a national network of hundreds of young people,

self-organizing themselves locally

to cover social, human rights issues,

and expressing themselves not only politically

but journalistically.

What I started to do in the beginning of this year,

올해 초에 제가 시작했던

as Mídia NINJA is already a self-organizing network,

닌자(NINJA)는 이미 충분히 자리잡았고

I'm dedicating myself to another project.

저는 다른 프로젝트에 착수하고 있습니다

It's called Fluxo, which is Portuguese for "stream."

It's a journalism studio in São Paulo downtown,

where I used livestream to experiment

But I'm also trying to come up with ways to finance independent journalism

because now I really want to try to make a living

But there's something more significant here,

something that I believe is more important and more crucial than my personal example.

제 개인적인 예시보다 말이죠.

I said that livestream could turn the web into a colossal TV network,

저는 개인생방송이 웹을 놀랄 만한 TV 네트워크로 바꿀수 있다고 했습니다

but I believe it does something else,

또 다른 점이 있는데,

because after watching people using it,

사람들이 그것을 보고 난 후

not only to cover things but to express, to organize themselves politically,

그것들을 다루고 표현할 뿐 아니라 정치적으로 조직을 시작한다는 점이죠.

I believe livestream can turn cyberspace into a global political arena

실시간방송은 사이버공간을

글로벌 정치의 장으로 변화할 수 있다고 믿습니다.

where everyone might have a voice,

모든사람이 적절한 의견을 표현하는 것이죠.

a proper voice,

because livestream takes the monopoly of the broadcast political discourse,

왜냐하면 실시간방송은 그동안 주류미디어가 보인

of the verbal aspect of the political dialogue

정치가나 권위자들의 의견만을 내보인 행태에서 벗어날 수 있고

out of the mouths of just politicians and political pundits alone,

and it empowers the citizen through this direct and non-mediated power

미디어권력을 시민에게 넘겨줄 수 있기 때문입니다.

of exchanging experiences and dialogue,

empowers them to question and to influence authorities

시민에게 미디어권력을 주고 권위에 의문을 갖게 하는 것이

in ways in which we are about to see.

바로 우리가 보려고 하는 것 입니다.

And I believe it does something else that might be even more important,

더 중요한 다른 점이 있습니다.

that the simplicity of the technology can merge objectivity and subjectivity

기술의 단순화는 객관성과 주관성을 합친다는 점이죠.

in a very political way, as I see it,

제가 본 것처럼 정치적인 방면에서요.

because it really helps the audience,

그것은 모든 전세계의 사람에게

the citizen, to see the world through somebody else's eye,

다른 사람의 시각에서 사건을 보게하고

so it helps the citizen to put him- or herself

사람들에게 타인의 장소에

in other people's place.

마치 있는 것 같은 경험을 주기 때문이죠.

And that idea, I think, should be the intention,

should be the goal of any good journalism, any good activism,

but most of all, any good politics.
