I grew up in a family where my father managed all of the money.

But for some reason, when I was eight or nine years old,

We would sit at the kitchen table, and he'd show me all the bank books.

And every time he would show me something about money,

he would end by saying, "And don't you tell your mother."

Now, to this day, I really don't know why he said that,

but what I do know is,

to that eight-year-old girl sitting at the kitchen table,

it meant, "Don't say a word."

Years later, when I got my first job, my father said,

"You'll bring me your check, and I'll put it in the bank for you."

But because of what he taught me years before, I said,

"I'd like my bank book."

And to my surprise, he gave it to me.

Right then, at 16 years old,

I began managing my own money.

I went on to college and then to start my new career as a CPA,

but now, with students loans, getting an apartment and a new job,

I began the roller-coaster ride of accumulating debt, paying it off

and accumulating more.

Many years later, after getting married, I went through an unexpected divorce,

and I was left with a house I couldn't afford

You might be wondering,

I had reverted back to what I learned growing up:

that one person managed all the money.

１人が全ての財産を 管理するということです

I had handed over my financial power,

私は経済力を手渡したために

and I had become financially dependent.

経済的依存の状態にありました

Financial dependency is when someone is dependent on a person,

経済的依存とは その人が金銭的な理由で

a job or a situation for money,

特定の人や仕事 または状況に 依存せざるを得ず

and they feel trapped.

自由になれない状態のことです

People fall into two categories:

こういった人は ２種類に分けられます

dependent with choice and dependent without a choice.

自ら選んでその状況になったか 他の選択肢がなかったかのどちらかです

Someone is dependent with choice when they hand over their financial power

自ら選んだ依存状態というのは 自分から経済力を譲り渡して

and their participation.

お金に関わることを止める場合です

It can happen in personal or business relationships

これは例えば個人間やビジネスの関係で

when one person doesn't want to be involved with the money,

一方がお金の事に関わりたくない場合です

so they hand over the responsibility to a spouse, a partner or a professional,

彼らが決定権を委ねるのは 配偶者やパートナー

会計士や上司などの専門家です

like an accountant or a manager.

This was my situation.

私の場合はこのパターンでした

I spent all day long managing other people's money,

１日中 他人の財産の管理をしていたので

so I was relieved

夫が財産の管理に前向きで 得意なことに ほっとしました

that my husband was interested and good at managing ours.

I was free!

私は自由になりました！

For the first time since that first job at 16 years old,

最初の仕事を始めた16歳の時から初めて

I didn't have to be responsible for managing my money.

自分の財産の管理から 解放されたのです

But what I failed to realize was what felt like freedom

しかし 私が気付けなかったのは 自由だと感じていたものが

was really dependency.

実際には依存であったということです

My mistake is that I didn't stay involved

私のミスは自分の財産と 関わりを保たず

or understand what was going on with our money.

どう管理されているのか 理解していなかった事です

You may have experienced this yourself,

皆さんも経験があるかもしれません

or you may have heard stories of celebrities or professional athletes

経験は無くても 芸能人やプロのアスリートが

that have relied on family, friends and others to manage their money,

家族や友人や他人に お金の管理を任せたところ

and they are left broke, bankrupt and betrayed

財産が無くなり 破産して裏切られた話を 聞いたことはありますね

because they made the choice to hand over their financial power.

自身の経済力を 丸投げする選択をした結果です

Someone that's dependent without a choice feels trapped

選択の余地なく依存に陥る人は

経済的な状況に囚われて 不自由を感じています

because of their financial situation.

They can be in a job or career where they're unhappy or being harassed

仕事やキャリアの中で不遇だったり ハラスメントを受けていても

but they can't afford to leave.

辞めるだけの経済的余裕がない場合です

Or, someone that's had to move in with family and friends

家族や友達と 同居せざるを得ない人も含まれます

because they've had an illness

病気をしていたり

or gone through a divorce or experienced a tragedy,

離婚や悲劇的な出来事を経験し

and now they're financially dependent on others.

他の人に経済的に 依存してしまっている場合です

And how many of us know someone that has an elderly parent or a relative

こんな高齢の親や親戚を持つ 知人がいる人も多いはずです

that can no longer take care of themselves,

and they're left to rely on others,

sometimes handing over their homes, their money and other assets.

Another type of dependency without a choice is financial abuse.

選択の余地なく依存に陥ってしまう もう一つのタイプは経済的虐待です

Financial abuse is a pattern of abusive behavior

経済的虐待とは パートナーを支配し

used to control and intimidate a partner.

怖がらせるために使われる 虐待の一種です

Victims are in a relationship, and the other person has power over them,

被害者は関係に縛られ 相手に支配されます

because they don't have access to money, information

なぜなら被害者はお金や情報

or the resources and support they need to leave.

お金を得る手段や そこから逃れる為の 援助を得られないからです

The Allstate Foundation has a program called the Purple Purse

The Allstate Foundationには Purple Purseと呼ばれるプログラムがあり

that helps victims of domestic violence

家庭内暴力に苦しむ被害者を

through financial empowerment.

経済面で支援します

They report that 99 percent --

in 99 out of one hundred domestic violence cases --

financial abuse helps keep victims trapped in their relationship.

The Purple Purse has coined financial abuse "the invisible weapon,"

because visible abuse leaves bruises and scars

but financial abuse doesn't.

経済的虐待にはそれがありません

Financial abuse and financial dependency leave emotional scars that you can't see.

They include hopelessness, guilt, shame, depression,

lack of confidence and self-esteem.

Financial dependency is also invisible, because no one's talking about it.

誰も話題にしないため 経済的依存も同様に認識されません

Why?

Because no one wants to show their emotional scars,

誰も自分の心の傷を 人に見せたくないからです

and because we're taught in our homes, on our jobs and in our community

それに家庭や職場やコミュニティでは こう教えられます

not to talk about money.

「お金について話すな」と

So many people that I talk to about this issue,

私がこの問題について 話した人の多くは

they can relate and they have a story,

問題をよく理解し　 自分でも経験していても

but they're not telling anyone their story.

誰にもその話をしてきませんでした

When I was told at the kitchen table, "Don't you tell,"

私がキッチンテーブルで 「絶対に言うなよ」と言われた時

I never told anyone.

私は誰にも話しませんでした

It's even hard for me right now to break that rule that I learned so long ago.

ずいぶん前に学んだそのルールを破るのは 今の私でも容易ではありません

So, what can I do? What can you do?

では私や皆さんに 何が出来るでしょうか？

What can we all do to disarm this invisible weapon?

この見えざる凶器を消し去るには どうすればいいのでしょう？

We can solve three problems.

３つの問題点を 解決することは出来ます

The first problem is lack of awareness,

１つ目の問題は 認識の欠如です

because knowing about money and having money

財産について知ることや 財産を持つことが

aren't always the solution.

常に解決に繋がるわけではないからです

In my situation, I was educated and experienced in managing money,

私の場合 財産を管理する教育を受け 専門的な知識もありましたが

but that didn't stop me from becoming financially dependent.

それでも経済的依存に陥りました

Why?

何故でしょう？

Because of the beliefs and experiences I had growing up:

私には育つ中で身についた 考え方と経験があったからです

one person manages all the money.

１人が全ての財産を管理するのだと

After my divorce, I had to rebuild my life financially and emotionally.

離婚後 私は精神的にも経済的にも 生活を立て直す必要がありました

So I took every self-development course

あらゆる自己啓発セミナーを受け

and I read every self-help book I could find.

あらゆる自己啓発本を読みました

And that's when I began to understand the dynamics of the family I grew up in

その時になって 私の育った家族の仕組みや

and how they played a role in me handing over my financial power.

それが私が経済力を譲り渡す上で 果たしていた役割を理解し始めました

When you become aware of your inner bruises and scars,

自分の内なる痣や傷に気が付くと

you can begin to break free from financial dependency.

経済的依存から 自分を 解き放つことができるようになります

The next problem is lack of information about financial literacy.

２つ目の問題は 金融リテラシーの欠如です

Financial literacy is having the skills and the knowledge

金融リテラシーとは 自身の財産について

to make informed decisions about your money.

情報に基づき決断を行える スキルと知識を持つことです

It includes topics like savings and investing,

貯蓄や投資 予算の計上や 借金についての知識のことです

budgeting and debt.

In 2018, only 17 states required financial literacy

2018年の時点で 高校で 金融リテラシーの授業が必修なのは

in high school curriculums.

たった17州です

This corresponds with recent studies that show that 66 percent of Americans

これは最近の研究で示された 66％のアメリカ人は

are financially illiterate.

If you are in a financial dependency situation,

start by looking and going through your finances,

making decisions, participate in making decisions about your money.

If you are in a financial abuse situation,

get access to your information.

Look for financial documents like bank credit card statements,

social security information and account pass codes.

The last problem is lack of giving and getting support.

３つ目の問題は 援助の提供や利用の不足です

Many people don't know that there are free resources

online and in your local community

to help you learn and establish healthy money habits.

There are also free resources if you are a victim of financial abuse,

like the Purple Purse.

Giving support includes listening to others that are financially dependent

without judgment or criticism.

It also involves sharing your story,

because when you share your story, you empower others,

and you give them the permission

to rewrite their own.

It's my hope that by sharing my story,

more people will learn about financial dependency,

will share their own stories

and will connect with others to shed a light on this hidden issue

他の人と繋がることで 陰に隠れた問題に光を当ててほしいです

so that we can all have financial freedom.
