I grew up in a family where my father managed all of the money.

But for some reason, when I was eight or nine years old,

Now, to this day, I really don't know why he said that,

I went on to college and then to start my new career as a CPA,

I began the roller-coaster ride of accumulating debt, paying it off

Many years later, after getting married, I went through an unexpected divorce,

I had reverted back to what I learned growing up:

that one person managed all the money.

I had handed over my financial power,

and I had become financially dependent.

Financial dependency is when someone is dependent on a person,

वित्तीय निर्भरता वह होती है जब कोई एक व्यक्ति पर निर्भर है,

a job or a situation for money,

एक जॉब या पियसे के लिए,

and they feel trapped.

और वो कैद महसूस करते है।

People fall into two categories:

दो तरह के लोग होते है:

dependent with choice and dependent without a choice.

पसंद के साथ निर्भर और एक विकल्प के बिना निर्भर है।

Someone is dependent with choice when they hand over their financial power

कोई पसंद के साथ निर्भर है जब वे अपनी वित्तीय शक्ति सौंप देते हैं

and their participation.

और उनकी भागीदारी।

It can happen in personal or business relationships

यह व्यक्तिगत में हो सकता है या व्यावसायिक संबंध

when one person doesn't want to be involved with the money,

so they hand over the responsibility to a spouse, a partner or a professional,

This was my situation.

I spent all day long managing other people's money,

so I was relieved

For the first time since that first job at 16 years old,

But what I failed to realize was what felt like freedom

was really dependency.

My mistake is that I didn't stay involved

or understand what was going on with our money.

You may have experienced this yourself,

or you may have heard stories of celebrities or professional athletes

that have relied on family, friends and others to manage their money,

and they are left broke, bankrupt and betrayed

because they made the choice to hand over their financial power.

Someone that's dependent without a choice feels trapped

जो बिना चुनाव के निर्भर महसून करता है वो कैद महसूस करता है

because of their financial situation.

उनकी आर्थिक सस्थिति के कारण।

They can be in a job or career where they're unhappy or being harassed

वह एक जॉब या करियर में हो कटे है जहा वोह दुखी या परेशान हो

but they can't afford to leave.

पर वो छोड़ना बर्दाश नहीं कर सकते।

Or, someone that's had to move in with family and friends

या, किससी को अपने परिवार और दोस्तो के साथ रहना पड़ा

because they've had an illness

क्यूकी वो बीमार दे

or gone through a divorce or experienced a tragedy,

या उनका तलाक हुआ, या उनके साथ कुछ बूरा हुआ।

and now they're financially dependent on others.

और अभ वो आर्थिक रूप से दूसरों पर नीरभर है।

And how many of us know someone that has an elderly parent or a relative

और हम सबको ऐसे लोग पता है जिनके पास एक बुजुर्ग माता-पिता या रिश्तेदार है

that can no longer take care of themselves,

and they're left to rely on others,

sometimes handing over their homes, their money and other assets.

Another type of dependency without a choice is financial abuse.

एक अन्य प्रकार की निर्भरता एक विकल्प के बिना वित्तीय दुरुपयोग है।

Financial abuse is a pattern of abusive behavior

वित्तीय दुरुपयोग एक पैटर्न है अपमानजनक व्यवहार

used to control and intimidate a partner.

का जिससे एक साथी को नियंत्रित या भयभीत किया जा सकता है।

Victims are in a relationship, and the other person has power over them,

पीड़ित एक संबंध मे होते है, दूसरे व्यक्ति के पास उनके ऊपर ताकत होती है,

because they don't have access to money, information

or the resources and support they need to leave.

The Allstate Foundation has a program called the Purple Purse

ऑलस्टेट फाउंडेशन का एक कार्यक्रम है पर्पल पर्स कहा जाता है

that helps victims of domestic violence

जो घरेलु हिंसा के पीड़ित की मद्दत करते है

through financial empowerment.

वित्तीय सशक्तिकरण से

They report that 99 percent --

वो कहते है की 99% --

in 99 out of one hundred domestic violence cases --

100 में से 99 घरेलु हिंसा के केस में

financial abuse helps keep victims trapped in their relationship.

आर्थिक शोषण पीड़ित को रिश्ते में कैद रहती है

The Purple Purse has coined financial abuse "the invisible weapon,"

because visible abuse leaves bruises and scars

but financial abuse doesn't.

Financial abuse and financial dependency leave emotional scars that you can't see.

आर्थिक शोषण और आर्थिक निर्भरता भावनात्मक निशान छोड़ती है जो हम देख नहीं पाते

They include hopelessness, guilt, shame, depression,

lack of confidence and self-esteem.

Financial dependency is also invisible, because no one's talking about it.

Why?

Because no one wants to show their emotional scars,

and because we're taught in our homes, on our jobs and in our community

not to talk about money.

So many people that I talk to about this issue,

they can relate and they have a story,

but they're not telling anyone their story.

When I was told at the kitchen table, "Don't you tell,"

I never told anyone.

मैंने किससी को एक शब्द भी नहीं कहा

It's even hard for me right now to break that rule that I learned so long ago.

So, what can I do? What can you do?

What can we all do to disarm this invisible weapon?

We can solve three problems.

हम तीन समस्याओं को हल कर सकते हैं।

The first problem is lack of awareness,

पहली समस्या जागरूकता की कमी है,

because knowing about money and having money

aren't always the solution.

हमेशा उपाय नहीं होते।

In my situation, I was educated and experienced in managing money,

मेरे स्थिति में, में पढ़ी लिखी थी और में पैसो का प्रबंधन करती थी,

but that didn't stop me from becoming financially dependent.

Why?

Because of the beliefs and experiences I had growing up:

one person manages all the money.

After my divorce, I had to rebuild my life financially and emotionally.

So I took every self-development course

तो मैंने सारे स्वयं का विकास के कोर्स लिए

and I read every self-help book I could find.

और सारी स्वयं सहायता कितब पढ़ डाली

And that's when I began to understand the dynamics of the family I grew up in

और ताभ मैं अपने परिवार का गतिविज्ञान समझने लगी

and how they played a role in me handing over my financial power.

और कैसे उनके कारण मैंने अपनी आर्थिक ताकत सौपी

When you become aware of your inner bruises and scars,

जब आप अपने भीतरी चोट और निशान के बारे में जानकार बनते है

you can begin to break free from financial dependency.

तभी ही आप आर्थिक निर्भरता से मुक्त हो सकते है

The next problem is lack of information about financial literacy.

अगली समस्या अभाव है वित्तीय साक्षरता के बारे में जानकारी

Financial literacy is having the skills and the knowledge

वित्तीय साक्षरता जानकारी और कौशलता होना है

to make informed decisions about your money.

जिससे एक इंसान पैसे को बारे में सही निर्णय बना सके।

It includes topics like savings and investing,

इसमे बचत और निवेश,

budgeting and debt.

बजट और कर्ज।

In 2018, only 17 states required financial literacy

2018 में, केवल 17 राज्य में वित्तीय साक्षरता

in high school curriculums.

हाइ स्कूल में अवशक्त था।

This corresponds with recent studies that show that 66 percent of Americans

यह हाल के अध्ययनों से मेल खाती है यह दर्शाता है कि 66 प्रतिशत अमेरिकी

are financially illiterate.

आर्थिक रूप से निरक्षर है।

If you are in a financial dependency situation,

अगर आप एक आर्थिक निरभित स्थिति मे है,

start by looking and going through your finances,

अपने वित्त को देखिये,

making decisions, participate in making decisions about your money.

पैसो को मामलो में निर्णय में शामिल होइए।

If you are in a financial abuse situation,

यदि आप वित्तीय दुरुपयोग की स्थिति में हैं,

get access to your information.

आपकी जानकारी के लिए पहुँच प्राप्त करें।

Look for financial documents like bank credit card statements,

वित्तीय दस्तावेज देखें जैसे बैंक क्रेडिट कार्ड स्टेटमेंट,

social security information and account pass codes.

सामाजिक सुरक्षा जानकारी और खाता पास कोड।

The last problem is lack of giving and getting support.

आखिरी समस्या सहारा देने और लेने की है।

Many people don't know that there are free resources

बहुत से लोग नहीं जानते वहाँ मुक्त संसाधन हैं

online and in your local community

ऑनलाइन और आपके स्थानीय समुदाय मे

to help you learn and establish healthy money habits.

जो आपको सही पैसों की आदत सीखा सकते है।

There are also free resources if you are a victim of financial abuse,

अगर आप वित्तीय शोषण के पीड़ित है, तो आपके लिए मुफ्त संसाधन है

like the Purple Purse.

जैसे पर्पल पर्स।

Giving support includes listening to others that are financially dependent

जो आर्थिक रूप से निर्भर है उनको आप सहारा उनकी कहानी

without judgment or criticism.

बिना निर्णय या आलोचना से सुनकर दे सकते हो।

It also involves sharing your story,

आप अपनी भी कहानी बता सकते हो

because when you share your story, you empower others,

क्यूकी जब आप अपनी कहानी बताते हो, आप दूसरों को सशक्त करते हो,

and you give them the permission

और उन्हे उनकी कहानी वापिस लिकने की

to rewrite their own.

अनुमति देते हो।

It's my hope that by sharing my story,

मेरी आशा है की मेरी कहानी बताकर

more people will learn about financial dependency,

और लोग आर्थिक निर्भता के बारे में जानेंगे,

will share their own stories

और अपनी कहानी कहेंगे

and will connect with others to shed a light on this hidden issue

और दूसरे लोगो के साथ मिलकर इस समस्या पे ध्यान देंगे

so that we can all have financial freedom.
