So when I was a little girl,

Septima Clark was an activist and an educator,

a woman after whom I'd eventually model my own career.

It may sound simple,

but confidence is something that we underestimate the importance of.

We treat it like a nice-to-have instead of a must-have.

We place value on knowledge and resources

above what we deem to be the soft skill of confidence.

But by most measures, we have more knowledge

and more resources now than at any other point in history,

現代は 歴史上のどの時点をも 上回るはずなのに

and still injustice abounds and challenges persist.

今なお 世の中は不公平であふれ 問題が絶えません

If knowledge and resources were all that we needed,

we wouldn't still be here.

とっくに現状を抜け出しているはずです

And I believe that confidence is one of the main things

私の考えでは「自信」こそ

missing from the equation.

I'm completely obsessed with confidence.

私は寝ても覚めても 「自信」のことばかり考えています

これが私の人生最大の道のりで

It's been the most important journey of my life,

a journey that, to be honest, I'm still on.

実をいえば 今もその途上にいます

Confidence is the necessary spark before everything that follows.

自信とは物事を始める前に 一番最初に必要な「点火」のことです

Confidence is the difference between being inspired

自信とは ひらめきを得ることと

and actually getting started,

実際に行動に移すこととの違いであり

between trying and doing until it's done.

やってみることと やり遂げることとの違いでもあります

自信があれば 失敗しても 進み続けることができるんです

Confidence helps us keep going even when we failed.

The name of the book on that coffee table was "I Dream A World,"

あのコーヒーテーブルに載っていた本は 『I Dream A World（私は世界を夢見る）』

and today I dream a world where revolutionary confidence

こんにち 私が夢見る世界とは 全く新しい形の自信が

helps bring about our most ambitious dreams into reality.

叶いそうもないような夢の実現を 助けてくれる世界です

That's exactly the kind of world that I wanted to create in my classroom

それこそまさに 教師時代の私が 教室で作り上げたいと望んだ世界でした

when I was a teacher,

like a Willy Wonka world of pure imagination,

いわば 純粋な想像でできた ウィリー・ウォンカの世界の

but make it scholarly.

All of my students were black or brown.

All of them were growing up in a low-income circumstance.

貧しい境遇の中で育っていました

Some of them were immigrants, some of them were disabled,

but all of them were the very last people

この世界では「自信」から 最も縁遠い立場にいました

this world invites to be confident.

That's why it was so important that my classroom be a place

where my students could build the muscle of confidence,

where they could learn to face each day with the confidence you need

世界を自分の理想通りに再設計していくのに 必要な自信を胸に

to redesign the world in the image of your own dreams.

日々臨むことを学べる場所です

After all, what are academic skills without the confidence to use those skills

結局のところ 学力を身につけても

それを実社会で駆使して世界を変える 自信がなくては意味がありません

to go out and change the world.

Now is when I should tell you about two of my students, Jamal and Regina.

これから２人の生徒の話をします ジャマルとレジーナといいます

Now, I've changed their names, but their stories remain the same.

名前は変えましたが 話の中身は同じです

Jamal was brilliant, but unfocused.

ジャマルはとても賢いけれど 気が散りやすく

He would squirm in his chair during independent work,

単独作業をさせれば 席でそわそわと体をよじらせたりと

and he would never stay still for more than three or four minutes.

Students like Jamal can perplex brand new teachers

because they're not quite sure how to support young people like him.

I took a direct approach.

I negotiated with Jamal.

ジャマルと約束をしたのです

If he could give me focused work,

集中して作業してくれるなら

教室のどこでやってもいいことにしました

then he could do it from anywhere in the classroom,

床に座っても 私の机の後ろでも

from our classroom rug, from behind my desk,

from inside his classroom locker, which turned out to be his favorite place.

Jamal's least favorite subject was writing,

and he never wanted to read what he had written out loud in class,

but we were still making progress.

One day, I decided to host a mock 2008 presidential election

My third graders had to research and write a stump speech

for their chosen candidate:

and sure enough, Jamal stunned all of us with his brilliance.

Just like Jamal's dad, John McCain was a veteran,

and just like Jamal's dad protected him,

And he wasn't my candidate of choice, but it didn't matter,

And then there was Regina.

Regina was equally as brilliant, but active.

She'd inevitably finish her work early,

and then she'd get on about the business of distracting other students.

Walking, talking,

passing those notes that teachers hate but kids love.

You look like you passed a lot of them.

Despite my high ideals for our classroom,

学級に対する高い理想とは裏腹に

I would too often default to my baser instincts,

and I would choose compliance over confidence.

Regina was a glitch in my intended system.

A good teacher can correct misbehavior

but still remain a student's champion.

But on one day in particular,

and my approach didn't communicate to Regina

I watched the light go out from her eyes,

and that light sparked joy in our classroom.

I had just extinguished it.

The entire class became irritable,

教室全体がイライラした空気になり

and we didn't recover for the rest of the day.

終日 その状態のままでした

I think about the day often,

その日のことをよく思い出します そして文字通り祈るのです

and I have literally prayed that I did not do irreparable harm,

because as a woman who used to be a little girl just like Regina,

I know that I could have started the process of killing her confidence

レジーナの自信を永遠に潰してしまう

forever.

A lack of confidence pulls us down from the bottom

and weighs us down from the top,

crushing us between a flurry of can'ts, won'ts and impossibles.

Without confidence, we get stuck,

and when we get stuck, we can't even get started.

行く手を阻まれ 身動きが取れなくなりそうな時でも

Instead of getting mired in what can get in our way,

confidence invites us to perform with certainty.

自信があれば 確信を持って 前に進むことがができます

We all operate a little differently when we're sure we can win

「大丈夫」と確信している時と 「勝てますように」程度の時では

versus if we just hope we will.

誰でも調子の良し悪しが 少し変わるものです

Now, this can be a helpful check.

こんな判断ができるかもしれません

If you don't have enough confidence,

自信が足りないときは

目標の再設定が必要なのかもしれない

it could be because you need to readjust your goal.

自信過剰なときは

If you have too much confidence,

it could be because you're not rooted in something real.

現実を見据えていないのかもしれない

Not everyone lacks confidence.

自信に欠けている人ばかりではありません

We make it easier in this society for some people to gain confidence

この社会は 一部の人が 自信を持ちやすいようにできています

世間一般的に好まれる 典型的なリーダータイプの人です

because they fit our preferred archetype of leadership.

We reward confidence in some people

私たちは ある人々の自信には報いるが

and we punish confidence in others,

それ以外の人々の自信は挫いてしまう

and all the while far too many people

そんな中で 想像がつかないほど多くの人が

are walking around every single day without it.

自信を欠いたまま日々を過ごしています

For some of us,

私たちの中には

confidence is a revolutionary choice,

自信を持つなんて 大それたことだという人もいます

and it would be our greatest shame

私たちにとって最も残念なのは

to see our best ideas go unrealized

最も優れたアイデアは実を結ばず

and our brightest dreams go unreached

最も輝かしい夢は叶わないこと

all because we lacked the engine of confidence.

それも 単に自信という原動力に 欠けるがゆえだということです

That's not a risk I'm willing to take.

そんなリスクは冒したくありません

So how do we crack the code on confidence?

では自信を得るための秘訣は何でしょう

In my estimation, it takes at least three things:

permission, community and curiosity.

「許し」と「コミュニティ」と 「好奇心」です

Permission births confidence,

許しは自信を生み

community nurtures it

コミュニティが育て

そして好奇心が肯定するのです

and curiosity affirms it.

In education, we've got a saying,

教育者の間で言われている言葉で

that you can't be what you can't see.

「理解できないものにはなれない」とあります

When I was a little girl, I couldn't show confidence

幼い頃の私は 周りに自信を 示すことができませんでした

until someone showed me.

誰かが手本を見せてくれるまでは

My family used to do everything together,

including the mundane things, like buying a new car,

新たに車を買うような ありふれたことも含めてです

and every time we did this,

I'd watch my parents put on the exact same performance.

We'd enter the dealership,

販売店に行くと

and my dad would sit

while my mom shopped.

When my mom found a car that she liked,

they'd go in and meet with the dealer,

and inevitably, every time the dealer would turn his attention

and his body to my dad,

"Rev. Packnett," they'd say, "how do we get you into this car today?"

My dad would inevitably respond the same way.

He'd slowly and silently gesture toward my mother

It might have been the complete shock

I'd watch my mother work these car dealers over

until they were basically giving the car away for free.

She would never crack a smile.

but what she was actually doing

and to show up confidently in my skill no matter who doubts me.

Confidence needs permission to exist

and community is the safest place to try confidence on.

I traveled to Kenya this year to learn about women's empowerment

私は今年ケニアを訪れ

マサイ族女性の社会地位向上の 実態について調べました

among Maasai women.

There I met a group of young women

そこでチーム・ライオネスを名乗る 若い女性たちに出会いました

called Team Lioness,

among Kenya's first all-female community ranger groups.

These eight brave young women were making history

in just their teenage years,

and I asked Purity, the most verbose young ranger among them,

Purity's confidence to chase down lions and catch poachers,

it didn't come from her athletic ability or even just her faith.

Her confidence was propped up by sisterhood,

What she was basically saying was that if I am ever in doubt,

I need you to be there

to restore my hope

In community, I can find my confidence

and your curiosity can affirm it.

好奇心がその自信を肯定できるのです

Early in my career, I led a large-scale event

キャリアがまだ浅い頃 大きなイベントを主催したのですが

that did not go exactly as planned.

計画通りには行きませんでした

I'm lying to you. It was terrible.

And when I debriefed the event with my manager,

I just knew that she was going to run down the list

of every mistake I had ever made,

probably from birth.

But instead, she opened with a question:

What was your intention?

I was surprised but relieved.

She knew that I was already beating myself up,

and that question invited me to learn from my own mistakes

instead of damage my already fragile confidence.

既に消え入りそうな自信を そっとしておいてくれたのです

Curiosity invites people to be in charge of their own learning.

好奇心は 自分自身の学びに 責任を持つよう導いてくれます

That exchange, it helped me approach my next project

あの時の会話のおかげで

次のプロジェクトには 成功するつもりで取り組むことができました

with the expectation of success.

Permission, community, curiosity:

許しとコミュニティと好奇心

この３つが揃って初めて

all of these are the things that we will need to breed the confidence

私たちの前に立ちはだかる 数々の大きな問題を解決するために

that we'll absolutely need to solve our greatest challenges

理想の世界を作り上げるために 必要不可欠な自信が生まれるのです

and to build the world we dream,

a world where inequity is ended and where justice is real,

それは 不公平が姿を消し 本物の正義が存在する世界であり

a world where we can be free on the outside and free on the inside

私たちが 内でも外でも 自由でいられる世界です

because we know that none of us are free until all of us are free.

みんなが一人残らず自由になるまで 誰一人自由ではないと知っているからです

A world that isn't intimidated by confidence

そして 自信がどんな形で現れても 怖気づくことのない世界

when it shows up as a woman

例えば女性であったり

or in black skin

黒い肌であったりなど

世間一般に流布している典型的な リーダーの姿ではない場合でもです

or in anything other than our preferred archetypes of leadership.

A world that knows that that kind of confidence

そのような種類の自信こそが

is exactly the key we need to unlock the future that we want.

誰もが待ち望む未来の実現に 必要な鍵だと知っている世界です

私は 本当に自信を持って言えます

I have enough confidence to believe that that world

will indeed come to pass,

そんな世界は きっと実現するし

and that we are the ones to make it so.

私たちこそが それを実現する世代なのだと
