If we traveled back to the year 800 BC,

In fact, I think that all of us can relate with the pain of failure.

But we don't share the details of those experiences.

ただ 失敗した経験談を 詳しく話すことはありません

And I totally get it, my friends, I have also been there.

私もどん底を経験していますから それはよく理解できます

I had a business that failed

事業に失敗し

and sharing that story was incredibly hard.

その話をするのは とても辛かったですから

In fact, it required seven years, a good dose of vulnerability

実際 ７年という期間と 自分の弱さをさらけ出すこと

and the company of my friends.

そして友人の支えが必要でした

This is my failure story.

私の失敗は次のようでした

When I was in college, studying business, I met a group of indigenous women.

商学部の学生の時 先住民の女性たちに会いました

They lived in a poor rural community in the state of Puebla, in central Mexico.

They made beautiful handmade products.

美しい手工芸品を作っていました

And when I met them and I saw their work,

I decided I wanted to help.

With some friends, I cofounded a social enterprise

with the mission to help the women create an income stream

and improve their quality of life.

We did everything by the book,

as we had learned in business school.

教科書通りに進めました

We got investors,

we spent a lot of time building the business and training the women.

But soon we realized we were novices.

The handmade products were not selling,

and the financial plan we had made was totally unrealistic.

In fact, we worked for years without a salary,

hoping that a miracle would happen,

that magically a great buyer would arrive

and she would make the business profitable.

But that miracle never happened.

In the end, we had to close the business,

and that broke my heart.

本当に心苦しかったです

I started everything to create a positive impact

そもそも職人の生活を

on the life of the artisans.

改善するための会社だったのに

And I felt that I have done the opposite.

むしろ悪化させた気がしました

I felt so guilty

罪悪感のあまり

that I decided to hide this failure

この失敗談のことは 何年も

from my conversations and my resume for years.

話すことも 履歴書に書くことも ありませんでした

I didn't know other failed entrepreneurs,

他の失敗した起業家を知らず

and I thought I was the only loser in the world.

負け犬は世界で私１人なのだと思いました

One night, seven years later, I was out with some friends

７年後のある晩 友達と出掛け

and we were talking about the life of the entrepreneur.

起業家の人生について話していました

And of course, the issue of failure came out.

案の定 失敗の話になりました

I decided to confess to my friends the story of my failed business.

友達に 私の失敗談をする決意をしました

And they shared similar stories.

すると みんな同じような 経験をしていたのです

In that moment, a thought became really clear in my mind:

その瞬間 ある考えが くっきりと浮かびました

all of my friends were failures.

友達全員が失敗経験者だったのです

(Laughter)

Being more serious, that night I realized

真面目な話をすると その晩 ２つのことに気付きました

that A: I wasn't the only loser in the world,

まず 失敗経験者は私だけではないということ

and B: we all have hidden failures.

そして みんながそれを隠すことです

Please tell me if that is not true.

間違っていたら教えてください

That night was like an exorcism for me.

その夜はまるで 悪魔払いのようでした

I realized that sharing your failures makes you stronger, not weaker.

失敗について話すことは 自分を強くします

And being open to my vulnerability

自分の弱さを隠さないことで

helped me connect with others in a deeper and more meaningful way

他者と より深く 意味のある関わりを持ち

and embrace life lessons I wouldn't have learned previously.

それまで経験しなかった人生の教訓を 真摯に受け止められるようになりました

As a consequence of this experience

失敗した事業の話を共有するという

of sharing stories of businesses that didn't work,

私たちのこの経験から

we decided to create a platform of events

他の人も失敗談ができる場を 設けることにしました

to help others share their failure stories.

And we called it Fuckup Nights.

「やけくそナイト」と名付けました

Years later, we also created a research center

数年後 研究所も立ち上げ

devoted to the story of failure

失敗談が企業 人々 そして社会に

and its implications on business, people and society

及ぼす影響を調べはじめました

and as we love cool names, we called it the Failure Institute.

その名も「失敗研究所」でした

It has been surprising to see

度々驚かせられますが

that when an entrepreneur stands on a stage

起業家が舞台に立ち

and shares a story of failure,

失敗談を始めると

she can actually enjoy that experience.

話すのが楽しそうなのです

It doesn't have to be a moment of shame and embarrassment,

昔のように

as it used to be in the past.

恥じて困惑するべきものではなく

It is an opportunity to share lessons learned

教訓を分かち合い

and build empathy.

共感を築くチャンスなのです

We have also discovered

that when the members of a team share their failures, magic happens.

誰かが失敗談をすると 魔法がかかるのです

Bonds grow stronger and collaboration becomes easier.

絆が強まり みなスムーズに協力できるようになります

Through our events and research projects,

イベントや研究を経て

we have found some interesting facts.

面白い発見に至りました

For instance, that men and women react in a different way

例えば 会社が失敗したとき

after the failure of a business.

男女の反応が異なることです

The most common reaction among men

男性に多い反応は

is to start a new business within one year of failure,

失敗して１年以内に 新たな会社を始めること

but in a different sector,

ただし 違う業種です

while women decide to look for a job

一方 女性の場合は

and postpone the creation of a new business.

仕事を探し 新規の起業を先延ばしにします

Our hypothesis is that this happens

私たちの仮説としては 女性の方が

because women tend to suffer more from the impostor syndrome.

インポスター症候群に 苦しむ傾向にあるからです

We feel that we need something else to be a good entrepreneur.

女性は 起業家として成功するには 自分に何かが足りないと感じます

But I have seen that in many, many cases women have everything that's needed.

でも 多くの場合 必要なものは全て身に付けています

We just need to take the step.

And in the case of men,

it is more common to see that they feel they have enough knowledge

and just need to put it in practice in another place with better luck.

Another interesting finding has been

that there are regional differences on how entrepreneurs cope with failure.

For instance, the most common reaction

after the failure of a business in the American continent

is to go back to school.

While in Europe, the most common reaction is to look for a therapist.

We're not sure which is a better reaction after the failure of a business,

but this is something we will study in the future.

Another interesting finding has been

the profound impact that public policy has on failed entrepreneurs.

For instance, in my country, in Mexico,

the regulatory environment is so hard,

that closing a business can take you a lot of time and a lot of money.

Let's begin with the money.

In the best possible scenario,

meaning you don't have problems with partners,

officially closing a business will cost you 2,000 dollars.

Which is a lot of money in Mexico.

Someone who earns the minimum wage

would have to work for 15 months to save this amount.

Now, let's talk about the time.

As you may know, in most of the developing world,

the average life expectancy of a business is two years.

In Mexico, the process of officially closing a business takes two years.

What happens when the average life expectancy of a business

is so similar to the time it will take you to close it if it doesn't work?

Of course, this discourages business creation

当然 起業しようという意欲はそがれ

and promotes informal economy.

In fact, econometric research has proved

that if the process of declaring bankruptcy takes less time and less money,

more new firms will enter the market.

For this reason, in 2017,

we proposed a series of public policy recommendations

for the procedure of officially closing businesses in Mexico.

For a whole year,

we worked with entrepreneurs from all over the country

And the good news is that we managed to help change the law.

On the night we invented Fuckup Nights,

we never imagined that the movement would grow this big.

In that moment, our only intention

was to put the topic of failure on the table.

To help our friends see that failure is something we must talk about.

It is not a cause of humiliation, as it used to be in the past,

or a cause of celebration, as some people say.

In fact, I want to confess something.

Every time I listen to Silicon Valley types or students

シリコンバレーの人々や学生が すぐに会社をつぶすという話を

bragging about failing fast and often like it's no big deal, I cringe.

軽々しくしているのを聞くと 胸が苦しくなります

Because I think that there is a dark side on the mantra "fail fast."

なぜなら「すぐに諦める」ことは 諸刃の剣だと思うからです

Of course, failing fast is a great way to accelerate learning

もちろん すぐに諦めれば学習も速く

and avoid wasting time.

時間の無駄にもなりません

But I fear that when we present rapid failure

しかし起業家に

to entrepreneurs as their one and only option,

すぐに諦めることを 唯一の選択として提示すれば

we might be promoting laziness.

努力を避けることを助長しかねません

We might be promoting that entrepreneurs give up too easily.

簡単に諦めてもいいと 言っているように聞こえるかもしれません

I also fear that the culture of rapid failure

また すぐに諦める文化は

could be minimizing the devastating consequences

倒産の壊滅的な打撃を 軽視するだけのような

of the failure of a business.

気がしてなりません

For instance, when my social enterprise died,

例えば 私の事業が失敗した時に

the worst part was that I had to go back to the indigenous community

一番辛かったのは 先住民の女性たちに

and tell the women that the business had failed

and it was my fault.

For some people this could be seen like a great learning opportunity for me,

but the truth is that the closure of this business

represented much more than that.

It meant that the women would stop receiving an income

that they really needed.

For this reason, I want to propose something.

I want to propose that just as we put aside the idea

of publicly humiliating failed entrepreneurs,

we must put aside the idea that failing fast is always the best.

すぐに諦めるのは 最善ではないということを

And I want to propose a new mantra:

新たなモットーを提案したいと思います

fail mindfully.

「よく考えて失敗」することです

We must remember that businesses are made of people,

企業は人で出来ているものであって 何の影響もなく

businesses are not entities that appear and disappear

魔法のように 現れたり 消えたりするものではないことを

magically without consequences.

心にとめる必要があります

When a firm dies, some people will lose their jobs.

企業が消滅すれば 職を失う人がいます

And others will lose their money.

お金を失う人もいます

And in the case of social and green enterprises,

社会的組織や非営利組織の場合

the death of this business can have a negative impact

環境や地域に

on the ecosystems or communities they were trying to serve.

大きな打撃を与えることもあります

But what does it mean to fail mindfully?

ただ 「よく考えて失敗する」とは どういうことでしょう

It means being aware of the impact, of the consequences

of the failure of that business.

意識するということです

Being aware of the lessons learned.

And being aware of the responsibility

その経験を世界と分かち合う責任を

to share those learnings with the world.
