I'm here to honor the sacredness of life

that I see at the border in south Texas.

In 2014,

I visited a detention facility

I had the opportunity to go in and be with them.

And they were all around me.

They were little ones,

some of them not older than five years old.

And they were saying to me,

It was so difficult to be there with them.

I started to cry with them,

and I told them,

وقلت لهم:

"Let us pray."

"دعونا ندعي."

(Spanish) "Vamos a rezar."

(بالإسبانية) "Vamos a rezar."

And they repeated after me,

وردَّدوا من بعدي،

(Spanish) "Diosito, ayúdanos."

(بالإسبانية) "Diosito, ayúdanos."

"God, please, help us."

"يا الله نرجوك أن تساعدنا."

As we prayed, I could see the Border Patrol officers

وبينما كنا ندعوا، كنت أستطيع أن أرى رجال خفر الحدود

looking through a glass window.

ينظرون إلينا عبر النافذة.

They were at the verge of tears.

As they heard the children praying and witness.

I had a little boy get close to me, closer,

because they were all over,

we could barely fit in that little cell.

And this little boy tells me,

Quiero irme con mi mamá."

"Please, help me.

I want to be with my mother.

أريد أن أكون مع أمي."

She is here, I was separated from her."

"إنها هنا ولكنني أُبعدت عنها."

I said to him,

أجبته:

"Mijo, if your mom is here,

"بُني، إذا كانت أمّك هنا،

I'm certain you will be reunited."

فأنا واثقة من أنك ستجتمع بها مجدداً."

When I walked out of the cell,

عندما خرجت من الزنزانة،

an officer got close to me and said to me,

اقترب مني أحد الحرّاس، وقال لي:

"Sister, thank you.

"شكراً لك يا أختاه.

You have helped us realize

لقد ساعدتنا على إدراك

that they are human beings."

أنهم بشر."

You know, sometimes, no matter what job we have,

أتدرون، علينا أحياناً وبغض النظر عن عملنا،

we must never forget to recognize

ألّا ننسى أبداً الاعتراف

the humanity in others.

Otherwise, we will lose our own humanity.

Let me tell you a bit about what I see and what I do

دعوني أخبركم عما أراه وما أقوم به

in the southern border of the United States

where I live and where I work.

Hundreds of families enter the United States

by crossing the Rio Grande river.

And once they are in the United States,

many of them are given permission

What has amazed me for all these years

has been the amazing humanitarian response

Thousands of volunteers

have given of their time so generously.

For me, they're all amazing people.

And the whole community,

city government,

from local business leaders

We have all come together in an effort to help

150,000 or more immigrants since that first day that we got started.

Back in those first days

when we were first involved in helping the immigrants,

we were at our respite center,

and an officer from the city walks in

and tells me,

"Sister, what are you doing here?"

I turned and looked to see what was happening

I was amazed at what I was seeing.

There were hundreds of volunteers

helping so many families there that needed help.

Giving them ways to get cleaned up

and to get clean clothing, food,

Just love and compassion was seen everywhere.

So I turned back and I responded to him and I said,

"Restoring human dignity.

That's what we're doing."

هذا ما كنا نقوم به."

I don't think he expected that answer from me,

لا أعتقد أنه توقّع هذه الإجابة مني،

because he took a step back

لأنه تراجع خطوة للخلف

and then approached me again and said,

وثم اقترب مني وقال:

"Sister, if I had a magic wand,

"أختاه، لو أنني أملك عصاً سحرية،

what would that magic wand do for you?"

فماذا ترغبين أن تقوم به هذه العصا؟"

"Showers?"

"حمامات؟"

Sure enough, that evening we had a mobile unit of eight showers.

كنا نملك حينها بالطبع وحدةً متحركة مؤلفة من 8 حمامات.

Amazing.

هذا أمرٌ رائع.

And after that,

وبعد ذلك،

we had 100 percent support of the city government.

We were there,

wanting to make sure that we were helping

and be successful with our response

to so many families that we were seeing

I think that we must help others see

You probably heard this idea before --

But in order to do that,

I think it's important to be able to see them

To be able to have a personal encounter,

To really meet up with them.

It is then that we are present to them

and we can make their humanity

a part of our own humanity.

And we'd recognize

that we are all part of the same human family.

During those days,

I had a lady approach me and tell me,

اقتربت مني امرأةٌ وقالت لي:

"Sister, I am 100 percent against what you do,

"أختاه، أنا معارضة تماماً لما تقومين به،

helping these illegal aliens."

بمساعدة هؤلاء الأجانب غير الشرعيين."

And I said to her,

فأخبرتها:

"Let me tell you what I do and why."

"دعيني أخبرك بما أقوم به ولماذا أقوم به."

So I shared with her and introduced her to the families and the children,

قمت بتعريفها على العائلات والأطفال،

shared the stories that they are living.

وشاركت معها قصصهم التي يعيشونها.

When I finished talking with her,

she turns and looks at me and says,

"Sister, I am 100 percent in favor of what you do."

That evening, her husband calls me,

Well, you know ...

I'm thinking that --

was it a personal encounter that she had?

I think it's a nice idea, a nice message,

أعتقد أن هذه فكرة ورسالة جيدتان،

but I don't think it's the whole story.

ولكنني لا أعتقد أنها تمثل كامل الفكرة.

In that encounter, we must put aside our prejudice that we have toward others,

يجب في اللقاء الإنساني أن نضع تعصبنا تجاه الآخرين جانباً،

that separate us and don't allow us to see them,

هذا التعصّب الذي يفرّق بيننا ولا يسمح لنا بتفهمهم،

our walls that we put up in our own heart

that keep us separated from others.

والتي تفرّقنا عن الآخرين.

When we are able to do that,

we're able to reach out to them.

You know, I think what doesn't make it possible is fear --

that we're afraid.

And because we're afraid --

more than likely it's because we've seen in the media

all this negative rhetoric that we hear about immigrants,

they are demonized, like they're not human,

that we can discard them

وأنه بإمكاننا نبذهم

and we can get rid of them,

and not even feel bad that we're doing that.

Immigrant families are not criminals.

العائلات المهاجرة ليسوا بمجرمين.

Immigrant families are like our families,

تشبه العائلات المهاجرة عائلاتنا تماماً،

like our neighbors.

وجيراننا.

They're good people

إنهم أشخاصٌ جيدون

who are entering our country and coming to the United States

يدخلون بلادنا ويأتون إلى الولايات المتحدة

only simply because they're fleeing away from violence

and they want to be safe.

ويريدون أن يعيشوا بأمان.

Unfortunately, what we see at the border

للأسف ما نراه في الحدود

is terrible.

People are hurting and suffering.

نرى الناس يتألمون ويعانون.

Thousands of them are.

الآلاف يتألمون ويعانون.

And mostly I feel

وأشعر أنه وفي الغالب

it's because of those walls that we put up,

بسبب هذه الجُدر التي نقيمها،

that we have in our hearts,

في قلوبنا،

that makes us not care.

هي ما تجعلنا لا نهتم لأمرهم.

So we have policies

إذاً نملك قوانيناً

that are returning people back to Mexico,

so they can wait.

لينتظروا.

And they wait there for months.

فينتظروا لأشهر.

In conditions that are horrible,

في ظروفٍ سيئة جداً،

where people are suffering and hurting.

حيث يعاني الناس ويتألمون.

Abuses.

وتُساء معاملتهم.

And not even the means to be OK.

في ظروف لا تكفي ليكونوا على ما يرام حتى.

I think that it is true

أؤمن...

that we must keep our country safe,

أن علينا الحفاظ على بلدنا آمناً،

that we must make sure who enters our country,

أن علينا أن نتحقق ممن يدخل بلدنا،

that criminals should be put away.

وأن يُطرد المجرمون منهم.

But it is also true

ولكن أؤمن أيضاً

that we must not lose our humanity in doing this.

أن علينا ألّا نفقد إنسانيتنا ونحن نقوم بذلك.

That we must have policies and procedures

وأن علينا أن نضع قوانيناً وإجراءاتٍ

that do not contribute to the human suffering

لا تزيد من المعاناة

that people are already suffering.

التي يعاني منها الناس مسبقاً.

And that we can find solutions that are respectful to all human life.

وأننا بإمكاننا أن نوجد حلولاً تحترم جميع أشكال الحياة البشرية.

We can do this,

نستطيع القيام بذلك،

if we can allow the best in us to come out.

إذا سمحنا للخير الذي بداخلنا بالظهور.

Because what I see at the border

لأنني أرى على الحدود

are families, men, who will take a child

عائلاتٍ ورجالاً مندفعون لحمل طفل

and will try to comfort that child that is crying

يبكي ومحاولة تهدئته

because that child is crying for their own dad.

لأن هذا الطفل يبكي على والده.

And these men are crying with that child.

فيبكي هؤلاء الرجال والطفل سوياً.

I see men and women who drop to their knees,

أرى رجالاً ونساءً يجثون على رُكبهم،

praying.

ويدعون.

As they pray in thanksgiving.

كما يدعون في عيد الشكر.

I see children who have been separated from their parents for months.

أرى أطفالاً فُرّقوا عن آبائهم لأشهر.

And when they're reunited,

وعندما التأم شملهم،

they're afraid to separate themselves from them,

كانوا يخافون أن يُبعَدوا عنهم،

because they're afraid they will lose their mom again.

لأنهم كانوا خائفين من أن يفقدوا أمهاتهم مرة أخرى.

Once a child looked up to me after she was reunited

في إحدى المرات نظرت إليّ طفلةٌ بعد أن جُمعت بعائلته

and she said to me,

وقالت لي:

(Spanish) "Hoy no voy a llorar."

(بالإسبانية) "Hoy no voy a llorar."

"Today I'm not going to cry."

"لن أبكي اليوم."

And I said, (Spanish) "Por qué, mi hija?"

فأجبتها: (بالإسبانية) "Por qué, mi hija؟"

She said, "Because I have been crying for the past whole month,

فقالت: "لأنني كنت أبكي طوال الشهر الماضي،

because I didn't know where my mother was.

لعدم معرفتي بمكان تواجد أمي.

But tonight, I'm going to be with her."

ولكنني سأكون معها هذه الليلة."

The day I visited the detention facility back in 2014,

في اليوم الذي زُرت فيه مركز الاحتجاز عام 2014،

there was a little boy who approached me and asked me

التقيت طفلاً اقترب مني وطلب مني

for me to help him find his mom.

أن أساعده ليعثر على أمه.

Well, that evening, when I was at the humanitarian respite center,

في ذلك المساء، وعندما كنت في الاستراحة الإنسانية،

the little boy walked in with his mother.

And as soon as he spotted me,

he runs toward me, I go down to greet him,

It is what we all are called to do.

Think about it.

We just need to allow ourselves to get close enough to see,

and we will care.
