In 2014,

I visited a detention facility

where hundreds of little children,

immigrant children,

were detained for several weeks

"Please, help me."

It was so difficult to be there with them.

Foi muito difícil estar ali com elas.

I started to cry with them,

and I told them,

"Let us pray."

"Vamos rezar."

(Spanish) "Vamos a rezar."

And they repeated after me,

(Spanish) "Diosito, ayúdanos."

(Espanhol) "Diosito, ayúdanos".

"God, please, help us."

"Meu Deus, por favor, ajuda-nos".

As we prayed, I could see the Border Patrol officers

looking through a glass window.

They were at the verge of tears.

As they heard the children praying and witness.

I had a little boy get close to me, closer,

because they were all over,

I want to be with my mother.

She is here, I was separated from her."

I said to him,

"Mijo, if your mom is here,

"Meu filho, se a tua mãe está aqui,

I'm certain you will be reunited."

"tenho a certeza que vais ter com ela."

When I walked out of the cell,

Quando saí da cela,

an officer got close to me and said to me,

um polícia aproximou-se e disse-me:

"Sister, thank you.

" Irmã, obrigado.

You have helped us realize

"Você ajudou-nos a perceber

"que eles são seres humanos."

that they are human beings."

You know, sometimes, no matter what job we have,

we must never forget to recognize

the humanity in others.

Otherwise, we will lose our own humanity.

Let me tell you a bit about what I see and what I do

in the southern border of the United States

where I live and where I work.

Hundreds of families enter the United States

by crossing the Rio Grande river.

And once they are in the United States,

What has amazed me for all these years

all faith communities,

in the Border Patrol and ICE.

We have all come together in an effort to help

150,000 or more immigrants since that first day that we got started.

Back in those first days

when we were first involved in helping the immigrants,

we were at our respite center,

and an officer from the city walks in

I turned and looked to see what was happening

I was amazed at what I was seeing.

There were hundreds of volunteers

helping so many families there that needed help.

Giving them ways to get cleaned up

and to get clean clothing, food,

Just love and compassion was seen everywhere.

So I turned back and I responded to him and I said,

"Restoring human dignity.

That's what we're doing."

I don't think he expected that answer from me,

because he took a step back

and then approached me again and said,

"Sister, if I had a magic wand,

what would that magic wand do for you?"

"Showers?"

Sure enough, that evening we had a mobile unit of eight showers.

Amazing.

Fantástico.

And after that,

we had 100 percent support of the city government.

We were there,

wanting to make sure that we were helping

and be successful with our response

I think that we must help others see

You probably heard this idea before --

that we must always see God's children as equal.

But in order to do that,

I think it's important to be able to see them

acho que é importante sermos capazes de os ver como pessoas.

as people.

To be able to have a personal encounter,

when we can feel what they feel,

when we can understand what they're hurting.

To really meet up with them.

It is then that we are present to them

and we can make their humanity

a part of our own humanity.

And we'd recognize

that we are all part of the same human family.

During those days,

I had a lady approach me and tell me,

"Sister, I am 100 percent against what you do,

"Irmã, estou 100% contra aquilo que está a fazer,

helping these illegal aliens."

"a ajudar esses estranhos ilegais."

And I said to her,

E eu disse-lhe:

"Let me tell you what I do and why."

"Deixe-me dizer-lhe o que é que faço e porquê."

So I shared with her and introduced her to the families and the children,

Partilhei com ela e apresentei-a às famílias e às crianças,

shared the stories that they are living.

partilhei as histórias daquilo que elas estavam a viver.

When I finished talking with her,

Quando terminei de falar com ela,

she turns and looks at me and says,

ela vira-se, olha para mim e diz:

"Sister, I am 100 percent in favor of what you do."

"Irmã, estou 100% a favor daquilo que faz."

(Laughter and applause)

(Risos)

(Aplausos)

That evening, her husband calls me,

Naquela noite, o marido dela ligou-me e disse-me:

he tells me,

"Sister, I don't know what you did to my wife.

"Irmã, eu não sei o que é que fez à minha mulher.

But this evening she came home and she said,

"Mas esta noite ela chegou a casa e disse-me:

'If Sister Norma ever calls you,

" 'Se a Irmã Norma te ligar,

you make sure you do what she tells you.'

" 'garante que fazes tudo aquilo que ela te pedir'.

So I'm just reporting to let you know I'm here to help in any way."

"Por isso, estou a ligar-lhe para dizer

"que estou pronto para ajudar de qualquer forma."

Well, you know ...

Bem, sabem...

I'm thinking that --

Eu penso,

was it a personal encounter that she had?

será que foi um encontro pessoal que ela teve?

I think it's a nice idea, a nice message,

Acho que é uma ideia bonita, uma bela mensagem,

but I don't think it's the whole story.

mas acho que não foi só isso.

In that encounter, we must put aside our prejudice that we have toward others,

Num encontro destes temos de pôr de parte

os preconceitos que temos em relação aos outros,

that separate us and don't allow us to see them,

que nos separam e não nos deixam ver os muros

our walls that we put up in our own heart

que colocamos no nosso coração

that keep us separated from others.

e que nos separam dos outros.

When we are able to do that,

Quando conseguimos fazer isso,

we're able to reach out to them.

You know, I think what doesn't make it possible is fear --

Eu acho que só não conseguimos por causa do medo,

that we're afraid.

And because we're afraid --

E como temos medo

more than likely it's because we've seen in the media

all this negative rhetoric that we hear about immigrants,

they are demonized, like they're not human,

that we can discard them

and we can get rid of them,

and not even feel bad that we're doing that.

Immigrant families are not criminals.

Immigrant families are like our families,

like our neighbors.

They're good people

who are entering our country and coming to the United States

only simply because they're fleeing away from violence

and they want to be safe.

Unfortunately, what we see at the border

Infelizmente, o que vemos na fronteira é terrível.

is terrible.

People are hurting and suffering.

As pessoas estão magoadas e a sofrer.

Thousands of them are.

São aos milhares.

And mostly I feel

E acima de tudo, eu sinto

it's because of those walls that we put up,

que é por causa dos muros que erguemos,

that we have in our hearts,

que temos nos nossos corações,

that makes us not care.

que fazem com que não nos importemos.

So we have policies

Por isso, temos políticas

that are returning people back to Mexico,

que devolvem estas pessoas ao México para ficarem à espera.

so they can wait.

And they wait there for months.

E esperam ali durante meses,

In conditions that are horrible,

em condições horríveis,

where people are suffering and hurting.

onde as pessoas sofrem e se magoam.

Abuses.

Violências.

And not even the means to be OK.

E nem sequer têm meios para ficarem bem.

I think that it is true

Acho que é verdade

that we must keep our country safe,

que devemos manter o nosso país em segurança

that we must make sure who enters our country,

que devemos verificar quem entra no país

that criminals should be put away.

para os criminosos ficarem de fora.

But it is also true

Mas também é verdade

that we must not lose our humanity in doing this.

que não devemos perder a nossa humanidade ao fazer isso.

That we must have policies and procedures

Que devemos ter políticas e procedimentos

that do not contribute to the human suffering

que não contribuam para o sofrimento humano

that people are already suffering.

de pessoas que já estão a sofrer.

And that we can find solutions that are respectful to all human life.

E que devemos encontrar soluções que respeitem a vida humana.

We can do this,

Podemos fazer isso,

if we can allow the best in us to come out.

se deixarmos vir ao de cima o melhor que há em nós.

Because what I see at the border

Porque aquilo que eu vejo na fronteira

are families, men, who will take a child

são famílias, homens, que pegam numa criança

and will try to comfort that child that is crying

e tentam confortá-la quando ela está a chorar

because that child is crying for their own dad.

porque a criança está a chorar pelo seu pai.

And these men are crying with that child.

E esses homens choram com essa criança.

I see men and women who drop to their knees,

Vejo homens e mulheres a ajoelharem-se, a rezar.

praying.

As they pray in thanksgiving.

Como rezam no Dia de Ação de Graças.

I see children who have been separated from their parents for months.

Vejo crianças que foram separadas dos pais durante meses.

And when they're reunited,

E quando voltam a reunir-se

they're afraid to separate themselves from them,

têm medo de se separarem deles

because they're afraid they will lose their mom again.

porque têm medo de perder a mãe novamente.

Once a child looked up to me after she was reunited

Uma vez uma criança olhou para mim depois de se ter reunido e disse-me:

and she said to me,

(Spanish) "Hoy no voy a llorar."

(Espanhol) "Hoy no voy a llorar."

"Today I'm not going to cry."

"Hoje não vou chorar."

And I said, (Spanish) "Por qué, mi hija?"

E eu disse: (Espanhol) "Por qué, mi hija?"

She said, "Because I have been crying for the past whole month,

Ela disse: "Porque eu tenho chorado o mês inteiro,

because I didn't know where my mother was.

"porque não sabia onde é que a minha mãe estava.

But tonight, I'm going to be with her."

"Mas esta noite, vou estar com ela."

The day I visited the detention facility back in 2014,

No dia em que visitei o centro de detenção, em 2014,

there was a little boy who approached me and asked me

houve um menino que se aproximou de mim e me pediu

para eu o ajudar a encontrar a mãe dele.

for me to help him find his mom.

Well, that evening, when I was at the humanitarian respite center,

Nessa noite, quando eu estava no centro de refúgio humanitário,

the little boy walked in with his mother.

And as soon as he spotted me,

e mal me viu,

he runs toward me, I go down to greet him,

veio a correr ter comigo, eu desço para o cumprimentar

and he just throws himself to hug me.

It was so beautiful,

Foi tão bonito,

that was truly a beautiful human encounter.

I think it's humanity at its best.

It is what we all are called to do.

É o que todos nós devemos fazer.

Think about it.

Pensem nisso.

We just need to allow ourselves to get close enough to see,

and we will care.
