that I see at the border in south Texas.

In 2014,

2014년에 저는

I visited a detention facility

이민구치소에 방문했습니다.

where hundreds of little children,

수백명의 어린 아이들,

immigrant children,

이민 아동들이

were detained for several weeks

몇 주 동안이나

in conditions that were very heartbreaking.

갇혀있는데 가슴이 찢어졌습니다.

They were dirty and muddy

아이들은 더러웠고 진흙투성이에

and crying.

울고 있었습니다.

Their faces were full of tears.

아이들의 얼굴은 눈물범벅이었습니다.

I had the opportunity to go in and be with them.

저는 그곳에서 아이들과 함께 할 기회가 있었습니다.

And they were all around me.

아이들이 제 주위를 몰려들었어요.

They were little ones,

아주 어린 아이들이었는데

some of them not older than five years old.

다섯 살도 채 안 된 아이도 있었죠.

And they were saying to me,

저에게 이렇게 얘기했어요.

(Spanish) "Sácame de aquí."

(스페인어) "Sácame de aqui"

"Get me out of here."

"여기서 나가게 해주세요."라고요.

(Spanish) "Por favor, ayúdame."

(스페인어) "Por favor, ayúdame."

"Please, help me."

제발 도와주세요.

It was so difficult to be there with them.

그곳에서 아이들과 있는 건 정말 힘들었습니다.

I started to cry with them,

아이들과 함께 울기 시작했고

and I told them,

이렇게 얘기했습니다.

"Let us pray."

"다 같이 기도하자."

(Spanish) "Vamos a rezar."

(스페인어) "Vamos a rezar."

And they repeated after me,

그리고 아이들은 저를 따라 기도했습니다.

(Spanish) "Diosito, ayúdanos."

(스페인어) "Diosito, ayúdanos."

"God, please, help us."

"하나님, 제발 저희를 도와주세요."라고요.

As we prayed, I could see the Border Patrol officers

기도하는 도중 국경 보안관들이

looking through a glass window.

유리창을 통해 저희를 보고 있는게 보였습니다.

They were at the verge of tears.

곧 눈물을 쏟을 것 같은 모습이었습니다.

As they heard the children praying and witness.

아이들의 기도소리를 듣고 그 모습을 목격하면서요.

I had a little boy get close to me, closer,

저는 작은 소년 한 명을 가까이, 더 가까이 당겼습니다.

because they were all over,

아이들이 방 안 여기저기에 있었는데

we could barely fit in that little cell.

그 작은 방 안에 겨우 다 들어갈 정도였거든요.

And this little boy tells me,

그런데 이 꼬마가 저에게 말하길,

(Spanish) "Ayúdame.

(스페인어) "Ayúdame.

Quiero irme con mi mamá."

Quiero irme con mi mamá."

"Please, help me.

"제발 도와주세요.

I want to be with my mother.

엄마한테 가고 싶어요.

She is here, I was separated from her."

엄마도 여기 있어요. 엄마랑 떨어졌어요."

I said to him,

그래서 제가 말했죠.

"Mijo, if your mom is here,

"얘야, 너희 엄마가 여기 계시다면

I'm certain you will be reunited."

분명히 다시 만날 수 있을거야."라고요.

When I walked out of the cell,

제가 방에서 나오자

an officer got close to me and said to me,

보안관 한 명이 제게 다가오더니,

"Sister, thank you.

"수녀님, 고맙습니다.

You have helped us realize

저 아이들도 인간이라는 것을

that they are human beings."

깨달을 수 있도록 해줬어요." 라고 하는 거예요.

You know, sometimes, no matter what job we have,

우리가 어떤 일을 하던

we must never forget to recognize

다른 사람들의 인간성을 존중해주는 것을

the humanity in others.

절대 잊어서는 안 됩니다.

아니면 우리의 인간성을 잃어버리게 될테니까요.

Otherwise, we will lose our own humanity.

Let me tell you a bit about what I see and what I do

제가 어떤 걸 보고 무슨 일을 하는지 살짝 말씀드리자면

in the southern border of the United States

미국 남부의 국경,

where I live and where I work.

제가 거주하며 일하고 있는 곳에서요.

Hundreds of families enter the United States

수백 명의 가족들이

리오그란데 강을 건너 미국으로 들어옵니다.

by crossing the Rio Grande river.

And once they are in the United States,

미국에 들어오면

many of them are given permission

그 중 많은 사람들은

to continue their process of immigration

이민 절차를 계속 밟을 수 있는 허가가 주어지죠.

at another point in the United States.

미국 내의 다른 곳에서요.

What has amazed me for all these years

지난 수년간 저를 놀라게 한 것은

has been the amazing humanitarian response

텍사스 남부의 지역사회로부터의

of the community there in south Texas.

놀랍도록 인도주의적인 반응이었습니다.

Thousands of volunteers

수천 명의 자원봉사자들이

have given of their time so generously.

아낌없이 시간을 내주었어요.

For me, they're all amazing people.

정말 멋진 사람들이에요.

And the whole community,

지역사회 전체,

city government,

시 정부,

from local business leaders

지역 사업가들부터

to civic organizations,

시민 단체들까지,

all faith communities,

믿음의 공동체들,

in the Border Patrol and ICE.

그리고 국경보안관과 이민세관집행국.

We have all come together in an effort to help

우리는 15만 명이 넘는 이민자들을 돕기 위해

150,000 or more immigrants since that first day that we got started.

첫 날부터 지금까지 함께 했습니다.

Back in those first days

초창기 때,

when we were first involved in helping the immigrants,

그러니까 처음 이민자들을 돕는 일을 시작했을 때

we were at our respite center,

임시 간호 센터에 있었을 때였는데

and an officer from the city walks in

시 행정관이 들어오더니

and tells me,

제게 이렇게 말했습니다.

"Sister, what are you doing here?"

"수녀님, 여기서 뭘 하고 계시는건가요?"

I turned and looked to see what was happening

저는 고개를 돌려

임시 간호 센터에서 일어나고 있는 일을 보았죠.

at the respite center.

I was amazed at what I was seeing.

제가 보는 것은 정말 대단했습니다.

There were hundreds of volunteers

수백 명의 자원봉사자들이

helping so many families there that needed help.

도움이 필요한 수많은 가족들을 돕고 있었어요.

Giving them ways to get cleaned up

깨끗이 씻을 수 있도록 해주고

and to get clean clothing, food,

깨끗한 옷과 음식,

hygiene items.

위생용품을 가져다주었고요.

Just love and compassion was seen everywhere.

단지 사랑과 연민만이 넘쳐나는 광경이었습니다.

So I turned back and I responded to him and I said,

그래서 전 다시 고개를 돌려 그 행정관에게 이렇게 말했죠.

"Restoring human dignity.

"인간의 존엄성을 회복하는 중이에요.

That's what we're doing."

그게 저희가 하는 일입니다."라고요.

I don't think he expected that answer from me,

아마 그런 대답을 예상 못했었나 봐요.

because he took a step back

왜냐하면 한 발짝 뒤로 물러났다가

and then approached me again and said,

다시 제게 다가오더니

"Sister, if I had a magic wand,

"수녀님, 제게 마법지팡이가 있다면

what would that magic wand do for you?"

어떤 마법을 쓰시겠어요?" 라고 물었거든요.

"Showers?"

"샤워 어때요?"

Sure enough, that evening we had a mobile unit of eight showers.

그리고 그날 저녁 저희는 이동식 샤워장 여덟 개를 지원받았습니다.

Amazing.

대단하죠.

And after that,

그리고 그 이후로

시 정부의 전폭적인 지원을 받게 됐습니다.

we had 100 percent support of the city government.

We were there,

저희는 그곳에서

wanting to make sure that we were helping

이민 가족들을 돕고

and be successful with our response

매일 마주하는 가족들을

to so many families that we were seeing

잘 대할 수 있도록

every single day.

만전을 기했습니다.

I think that we must help others see

우리가 보는 것을 다른 사람들도 볼 수 있도록

what we see.

도와야한다고 생각합니다.

I think it's important

그것들을 다른 사람들과 나누는 것은

that we can share that with others.

중요하다고 생각해요.

You probably heard this idea before --

아마 이 얘기를 들어 보신 적이 있을거예요.

that we must always see God's children as equal.

하나님의 자녀는 모두 동등하게 바라봐야 한다.

But in order to do that,

하지만 그렇게 하려면

그들을 사람으로 바라보는 것이

I think it's important to be able to see them

as people.

중요하다고 생각합니다.

To be able to have a personal encounter,

그들과 개인적인 만남을 갖고

when we can feel what they feel,

그들이 느끼는 걸 우리도 느끼고

when we can understand what they're hurting.

그들의 고통을 이해할 수 있도록.

To really meet up with them.

그들과 진정으로 만나는 것.

It is then that we are present to them

그래야만 비로소 우리가 그들과 함께할 수 있고

and we can make their humanity

그들의 인간성을

a part of our own humanity.

우리의 인간성의 일부로 만들 수 있는 것입니다.

And we'd recognize

그럼으로써 우리는 그들도 우리와 같은

that we are all part of the same human family.

가족이라는 사실을 깨닫겠죠.

During those days,

이러던 중 어느 날

I had a lady approach me and tell me,

여자 한 분이 제게 오더니,

"Sister, I am 100 percent against what you do,

"수녀님, 저는 당신이 하는 일에 전혀 동의하지 않아요.

helping these illegal aliens."

불법 체류자들을 도와주는 일이잖아요."

And I said to her,

그래서 저는 말했죠.

"Let me tell you what I do and why."

"제가 무슨 일을 하고, 왜 하는지 말씀드리죠."

So I shared with her and introduced her to the families and the children,

그녀에게 우리가 돕는 가족들과 아이들을 소개해주고

shared the stories that they are living.

그들이 살아가는 이야기들을 나누었어요.

When I finished talking with her,

제가 이야기를 마치자

she turns and looks at me and says,

그녀는 저를 바라보다가

"Sister, I am 100 percent in favor of what you do."

"수녀님, 저는 당신이 하는 일을 100% 지지해요."라고 하더군요.

(Laughter and applause)

(웃음과 박수)

That evening, her husband calls me,

그날 저녁, 그녀의 남편이 전화를 걸어와서

he tells me,

제게 말하길,

"Sister, I don't know what you did to my wife.

"수녀님, 제 아내에게 무슨 짓을 하신 건진 모르겠지만

But this evening she came home and she said,

오늘 저녁 집에 오더니 아내가 저에게

'노마 수녀님이 혹시라도 전화하면

'If Sister Norma ever calls you,

you make sure you do what she tells you.'

시키는대로 하도록 해요' 라고 해서

So I'm just reporting to let you know I'm here to help in any way."

그래서 무엇이든 돕겠다고 말씀드리려고 전화했습니다"라고요.

Well, you know ...

있잖아요.

I'm thinking that --

제 생각엔...

was it a personal encounter that she had?

개인적인 만남 때문이었을까요?

I think it's a nice idea, a nice message,

좋은 생각이고 좋은 메세지죠.

but I don't think it's the whole story.

하지만 그게 이야기의 전부는 아닌 것 같습니다.

In that encounter, we must put aside our prejudice that we have toward others,

그 만남에서 우리는 다른 사람을 향한 편견을 걷어내야해요.

that separate us and don't allow us to see them,

그들과 우리를 분리시키고 볼 수 없게 하는,

우리의 마음에 우리 손으로 세운 장벽.

our walls that we put up in our own heart

that keep us separated from others.

다른 사람으로부터 우리를 분리시키는 장벽이요.

When we are able to do that,

그 장벽을 무너뜨릴 수 있을 때

we're able to reach out to them.

그들에게 닿을 수 있게 되는 겁니다.

You know, I think what doesn't make it possible is fear --

그리고 그렇게 할 수 없는 이유는 두려움 때문이라고 생각합니다.

that we're afraid.

무서워서요.

And because we're afraid --

우리가 무서워하는 이유는

more than likely it's because we've seen in the media

미디어에서 보고 들은

all this negative rhetoric that we hear about immigrants,

이민자에 대한 온갖 부정적인 수사들이

they are demonized, like they're not human,

그들을 마치 인간이 아닌 악마처럼 그리고

that we can discard them

버려도 되는,

and we can get rid of them,

제거해도 되는 것 마냥,

and not even feel bad that we're doing that.

심지어 그렇게 느끼는데 죄책감도 들지 않게 하죠.

Immigrant families are not criminals.

이민자 가족들은 범죄자가 아닙니다.

Immigrant families are like our families,

그들의 가족은 우리의 가족과 같아요.

like our neighbors.

우리의 이웃이요.

They're good people

그들은 좋은 사람들입니다.

who are entering our country and coming to the United States

우리나라 미국에 들어오는 이유는

only simply because they're fleeing away from violence

단지 폭력을 피해 달아나서

and they want to be safe.

안전하게 살고 싶기 때문이에요.

Unfortunately, what we see at the border

하지만 불행히도 지금 국경에서 벌어지고 있는 일은

is terrible.

끔찍합니다.

People are hurting and suffering.

그들은 상처받고 고통받고 있어요.

Thousands of them are.

수천 명의 사람들이요.

And mostly I feel

그리고 무엇보다 저는

it's because of those walls that we put up,

이 모든 게 그 장벽 때문이라고 생각합니다.

우리 마음에 세워진 장벽이

that we have in our hearts,

that makes us not care.

우리를 차갑게 만들었다고요.

So we have policies

멕시코로 일단 사람들을 돌려보내서

that are returning people back to Mexico,

기다리도록 하게 하는

so they can wait.

정책이 있습니다.

And they wait there for months.

몇 달을 기다리죠.

In conditions that are horrible,

끔찍한 환경에서,

where people are suffering and hurting.

모두가 고통받고 아파하는 환경에서요.

Abuses.

폭력.

And not even the means to be OK.

괜찮아질 수 있는 방법조차 없는 환경에서요.

I think that it is true

저는 우리나라를 안전하게

that we must keep our country safe,

지켜야 한다는 데에 동의합니다.

that we must make sure who enters our country,

누가 들어오는지 확실히 해야한다는 것도요.

that criminals should be put away.

범죄자들은 들어오지 못하게 막아야한다는 것도요.

But it is also true

하지만 동시에

that we must not lose our humanity in doing this.

그러는 과정에서 인간성을 잃어서는 안됩니다.

That we must have policies and procedures

정책 및 절차를 수립해야해요.

that do not contribute to the human suffering

사람들이 이미 겪고있는

that people are already suffering.

인간적 고통에 고통을 더하지 않는 정책이요.

And that we can find solutions that are respectful to all human life.

그래서 모든 인간의 생명을 존중하는 해결책을 찾을 수 있도록요.

We can do this,

우린 할 수 있습니다.

if we can allow the best in us to come out.

우리의 최선을 다한다면요.

Because what I see at the border

왜냐하면 제가 국경에서 보는 광경은

are families, men, who will take a child

가족들, 남자들이

울고 있는 아이를 달래는 광경입니다.

and will try to comfort that child that is crying

because that child is crying for their own dad.

아이가 자기 아빠를 찾으며 울고 있기 때문에요.

And these men are crying with that child.

그리고 이 남자들은 아이와 함께 울고는 합니다.

I see men and women who drop to their knees,

남녀노소 할 것 없이 무릎을 꿇고

praying.

기도하는 모습을 봅니다.

As they pray in thanksgiving.

추수감사절 기도를 올리는 모습이요.

I see children who have been separated from their parents for months.

몇 달 동안이나 부모님으로부터 떨어진 아이들을 봅니다.

And when they're reunited,

그리고 다시 만나게 됐을 때

they're afraid to separate themselves from them,

달라붙어 떨어지질 않는데

because they're afraid they will lose their mom again.

엄마를 또 다시 잃어버릴까봐 두려워서죠.

Once a child looked up to me after she was reunited

한 번은 한 아이가 부모를 다시 만난 후 저를 올려다보더니

and she said to me,

이렇게 말을 했습니다.

(Spanish) "Hoy no voy a llorar."

(스페인어) "Hoy no voy a llorar."

"Today I'm not going to cry."

"오늘 전 울지 않을거예요."라고요.

And I said, (Spanish) "Por qué, mi hija?"

그래서 저는 "왜?"라고 물었고

She said, "Because I have been crying for the past whole month,

아이는 "왜냐하면 지난 한 달 내내

because I didn't know where my mother was.

엄마가 어딨는지 몰라서 울었거든요.

But tonight, I'm going to be with her."

그런데 오늘 밤은 엄마랑 지낼 수 있으니까요."라고 대답했습니다.

The day I visited the detention facility back in 2014,

지난 2014년 제가 이민구치소에 방문했을 때

there was a little boy who approached me and asked me

제게 다가와 엄마를 찾는 걸 도와달라던

for me to help him find his mom.

한 남자아이가 있었습니다.

Well, that evening, when I was at the humanitarian respite center,

그날 저녁 제가 임시 간호 센터에 있을 때에

the little boy walked in with his mother.

그 아이가 엄마 손을 잡고 들어오더군요.

And as soon as he spotted me,

그 아이가 절 보자마자 제게 달려오길래

he runs toward me, I go down to greet him,

맞아주기위해 아래로 내려갔고

and he just throws himself to hug me.

아이는 온 몸을 던져 저를 끌어안아주었어요.

It was so beautiful,

너무 아름다웠어요.

너무나 아름다운 인간 대 인간의 만남이었습니다.

that was truly a beautiful human encounter.

저는 그게 최고의 인간성이라 생각해요.

I think it's humanity at its best.

It is what we all are called to do.

우리 모두가 부르심을 받은 이유죠.

Think about it.

생각해보세요.

We just need to allow ourselves to get close enough to see,

보기 위해 조금 더 가까이 다가갈 용기를 낸다면

and we will care.

마음을 쓰게 될 겁니다.
