That was the place

just as God starts raining down fire on Sodom and Gomorrah.

كما بدأ الله يمطر نارًا على سدوم وعمورة.

I can't figure out how Gomorrah got dragged into this.

لا أعرف كيف أُقحمت عمورة في هذا.

But Lot and his folks are running,

لكن لوط وأهله يركضون،

fleeing all that destruction,

يهربون من كل هذا الدمار،

kicking up dust while the Lord rains down death,

يركلون الغبار بينما يمطر الرب الموت،

and then, for some reason, Lot's wife looks back.

ثم لسببٍ ما، تنظر زوجة لوط خلفها.

God turns her into a pillar of salt.

فيحولها الرب إلى عمود ملح.

"Remember Lot's wife," Jesus says.

يقول المسيح، "تذكروا زوجة لوط."

But I've got a question:

ولكن لدي سؤال:

Why does she look back?

لماذا تنظر خلفها؟

Does she look back because she didn't want to miss the mayhem,

أكانت تنظر خلفها لأنها لم تكن تريد تفويت الفوضى،

wanted one last glimpse of a city on fire?

وأرادت لمحة أخيرة للمدينة وهي تحترق؟

Does she look back because she wanted to be sure that her people

هل كانت تنظر للخلف لأنها أرادت أن تتأكد بأن أهلها

were far enough from danger to breathe a little easy?

كانوا بعيدون بما فيه الكفاية عن الخطر لتتنفس بسهولة؟

I'm so nosy and selfish sometimes, those likely would have been my reasons

أنا فضولي وأناني جداً في بعض الأحيان، تلك على الأرجح كانت أسبابي

if I'd been in her shoes.

لو كنت مكانها.

But what if something else was going on with this woman, Lot's wife?

ولكن ماذا لو كان هناك شيء آخر يجري مع هذه المرأة، زوجة لوط؟

What if she could not bear the thought of leaving those people

ماذا لو كانت لم تتحمل فكرة ترك هؤلاء الناس

all alone to burn alive,

ليحترقوا جميعاً وهم على قيد الحياة،

even for righteousness's sake?

حتى من أجل الخير؟

Isn't that possible?

أليس هذا ممكناً؟

If it is, then this backward glance of a disobedient woman

إذا كان كذلك، ثم هذه النظرة الرجعية لامرأة عاصية

may not be a cautionary tale after all.

قد لا تكون حكاية تحذيرية في النهاية.

It may be the bravest act in all the Bible,

قد يكون الفعل الشجاع في كل الكتاب المقدس،

even braver than the act that holds the whole Book together,

حتى أكثر شجاعة من الموضوع المحوري الذي يمسك الكتاب كله معه،

the crucifixion.

صلب المسيح.

We are told that up on Calvary, on an old rugged cross,

قيل لنا أنه فوق جلفاري، على صليب وعر قديم،

Jesus gave his life to save everybody:

ضحى المسيح بحياته لإنقاذ الجميع:

billions and billions of strangers for all time to come.

المليارات والمليارات من الغرباء للأبد.

It's a nice thing to do.

إنه شيء جميل لفعله.

It made him famous, that's for sure.

لقد جعله مشهوراً، هذا مؤكد.

But Lot's wife was killed,

لكن تم قتل زوجة لوط،

turned into a pillar of salt,

تحولت إلى عمود ملح،

all because she could not turn her back on her friends,

كل هذا لأنها لم تستطع أن تدير ظهرها عن أصدقائها،

the wicked men of Sodom,

الرجال الأشرار في سدوم،

and nobody even wrote the woman's name down.

ولم يكتب أحد حتى اسم المرأة.

Oh, to have the courage of Lot's wife.

لتحظى بشجاعة زوجة لوط.

That's the kind of courage we need today.

هذا هو نوع الشجاعة التي نحتاجها اليوم.

The courage to put ourselves over there.

الشجاعة لنضع أنفسنا هناك.

The courage that says that either all of us have to be faggots,

الشجاعة التي تقول إما أن نكون جميعاً شواذ،

or none of us can be faggots, for any of us to be free.

The courage to stand with other vagabonds in the street,

with the faith that from the naked crust of all we are,

we can build a better world.

يمكننا أن نبني عالماً أفضل.
