My mother called this summer to stage an intervention.

It was the language that disturbed her.

For example:

"I have been so many things

along my curious journey:

a poor boy, a nigger,

a Yale man, a Harvard man,

the spawn of Satan, the Second Coming,

That's just page six.

So you may understand my mother's worry.

제 어머니가 왜 걱정했는지 아시겠죠.

But she wanted only to make one small change.

그러나 어머니는 그저 작은 변화를 주길 바랬죠.

So she called, and she began,

"Hey, you are a man.

You're not a faggot, you're not a punk,

and let me tell you the difference.

You are prominent. You are intelligent.

She thought she'd done me a favor,

어머니께서는 저를 위해 그러셨다고 생각하셨겠지요.

and in a way, she had.

어떤 면에선 그러셨어요.

Her call clarified what I am trying to do with my life

어머니의 전화는 제가 평생 무엇을 할지

and in my work as a writer,

작가로서 무슨 일을 할 지 명확하게 해줬죠.

which is to send one simple message:

그것은 한 가지 간단한 메세지를 전하는 것인데

the way we're taught to live has got to change.

우리가 배운 삶의 방식을 바꿔야 한다는 겁니다.

I learned this the hard way.

저는 이걸 힘들게 깨달았어요.

I was born not on the wrong side of the tracks,

제가 태어난 길이 잘못된 건 아니지만

but on the wrong side of a whole river,

the Trinity, down in Oak Cliff, Texas.

텍사스주 오크 클리프의 트리니티에서 태어났어요.

I was raised there in part by my grandmother

who worked as a domestic,

and by my sister,

who adopted me a few years after our mother,

할머니는 어머니가 정신질환을 앓다가

who struggled with mental illness,

disappeared.

And it was that disappearance,

that began when I was 13 and lasted for five years,

that shaped the person I became,

the person I later had to unbecome.

Before she left, my mother had been my human hiding place.

She was the only other person who seemed as strange as me,

beautifully strange,

and a 1980s Whitney Houston.

I'm not saying she was perfect,

어머니가 완벽했다는 건 아니에요.

just that I sure benefited from her imperfections.

어머니의 불완전함이 저에게 크게 다가왔었어요.

And maybe that's what magic is, after all:

아마 그게 마법처럼 느껴졌던 것 같아요.

a useful mistake.

그럴법한 실수죠.

So when she began to disappear for days at a time,

어머니가 한번에 며칠씩 사라지기 시작했을 때

I turned to some magic of my own.

저만의 마법에 의지했어요.

It struck me, as from above,

완전히 사로잡혔었죠.

that I could conjure up my mother just by walking perfectly

완벽하게 걸을 때면 어머니를 떠올릴 수 있었어요.

from my elementary school at the top of a steep hill

초등학교에서부터 가파른 언덕의 꼭대기까지

all the way down to my grandmother's house,

할머니 집으로 가는 길 내내

placing one foot, and one foot only, in each sidewalk square.

한 발, 한 발을 도보의 정사각형에 맞췄어요.

I couldn't let any part of any foot touch the line between the square,

조금이라도 정사각형 사이의 선을 밟을 수 없었죠.

I couldn't skip a square,

그냥 지나칠 수 없었어요.

all the way to the last square at the last blade of grass

도로변과 할머니집의 잔디밭을 구분짓는 마지막 잔디로 이어지는

that separated our lawn from our driveway.

마지막 정사각형 까지 말이죠.

And I bullshit you not, it worked --

이게 단 한번만 그랬다고

just once though.

생각하지는 않으시겠죠.

But if my perfect walk could not bring my mother back,

이 완벽한 걸음으로 어머니를 떠올리지 못했다 해도

I found that this approach had other uses.

이 방법은 다른 용도가 있었을 거예요.

I found that everyone else in charge around me

저는 제 주위에 있는 모든 사람들이

loved nothing more than perfection,

완벽, 복종, 항복보다 더 사랑하는 건

obedience, submission.

없다는 걸 알게됐어요.

Or at least if I submitted, they wouldn't bother me too much.

최소한 항복이라도 하면 저를 마구 괴롭히진 않았으니깐요.

So I took a bargain

그래서 합의를 봤어요.

that I'd later see in a prison, a Stasi prison in Berlin,

베를린의 슈타지 감옥에서

on a sign that read,

한 표지판을 봤는데

"He who adapts can live tolerably."

"적응하는 자는 그럭저럭 살 수 있다." 라고 써있었죠.

It was a bargain that helped ensure

그 합의는 확신을 줬어요.

I had a place to stay and food to eat;

머물 곳과 먹을 음식을 가져다줄 거라고요.

a bargain that won me praise of teachers and kin, strangers;

선생님과 친척들, 낯선 사람들이 칭찬을 해줄 거라고요.

a bargain that paid off big time, it seemed,

그 합의는 대성공을 거둔 듯 보였어요.

when one day at 17, a man from Yale showed up at my high school to recruit me

제가 17살일 때, 예일대 사람이 찾아와 예일대 축구팀으로 스카웃했어요.

for Yale's football team.

It felt as out of the blue to me then as it may to you now.

여러분도 지금 그렇듯이 저도 뜬금없다고 느꼈죠.

The Yale man said -- everybody said --

그 예일대 사람이랑 모든 사람이

that this was the best thing that could ever happen to me,

이건 저에게 일어날 수 있는 가장 최고의 일이라고 말했어요.

the best thing that could happen to the whole community.

지역 사회 전체에 일어날 수 있는 최고의 일이라고요.

"Take this ticket, boy," they told me.

"이 티켓을 받아." 라고 했죠.

I was not so sure.

전 확신이 들지 않았어요.

Yale seemed another world entire:

예일대는 완전 다른 세상처럼 보였어요.

a cold, foreign, hostile place.

냉소적이고, 이국적이며, 적대적으로요.

On the first day of my recruiting visit,

스카웃 이후 방문 첫 날,

I texted my sister an excuse for not going.

누나한테 가지 않겠다고 핑계대는 문자를 보냈어요.

"These people are so weird."

"이 사람들 진짜 이상해."

She replied, "You'll fit right in."

누나가 대답하길, "너랑 딱 맞네."

(Laughter)

(웃음)

I took the ticket

그 티겟을 받기로 했어요.

and worked damn hard to fit right in.

그리고 거기에 맞기 위해 엄청난 노력을 했어요.

When my freshman advisor warned me not to wear my fitted hats on campus ...

신입생 상담원이 내 몸에 딱 맞는 모자를 쓰지 말라고 경고했을 때

"You're at Yale now. You don't have to do that anymore," she said.

"너는 지금 예일대에 있어. 더 이상 이런 거 할 필요 없어." 라고도 하더군요.

I figured, this was just one of the small prices

이건 겨우 지불해야하 할 대가의 자질구레한 것 중 하나임을 깨달았죠.

that must be paid to make it.

I paid them all, or tried,

모두 지불했어요, 혹은 노력했죠.

and sure enough they seemed to pay me back:

그리고 충분할 만치 보상이 주어지는 것처럼 보였어요.

made me a leader on the varsity football team;

대학 축구 팀의 리더가 되었고

got me into a not-so-secret society

그렇게 비밀스럽지 않은 사회로 들어갔고

and a job on Wall Street, and later in Washington.

월 스트리트에서 직업을 구했어요. 나중에는 워싱턴으로 갔고요.

Things were going so well that I figured naturally

일이 너무나도 잘 풀리길래 저는 자연스럽게 깨달았죠.

I should be President of the United States.

난 미국의 대통령이 될 거야.

(Laughter)

But since I was only 24

하지만 고작 24살이었기에

and since even presidents have to start somewhere,

심지어 대통령이 되기 위해선 먼저 해야하는 일이 있기에

I settled instead on a run for Congress.

대신 의회 출마를 결정했어요.

Now, this was in the afterglow of that great 2008 election:

2008년 대선 때의 여운에 영향을 받아 나가게 된 건데요.

the election during which a serious, moderate senator stressed,

대선 동안 진지하고 온건한 상원의원들이 연설했었어요.

"The message you've got to send more than any other message

"어느 다른 메세지 보다 당신이 전해야할 메세지는

is that Barack Obama is just like us."

버락 오바마도 우리와 같다는 거예요."

They sent that message so well

that their campaign became the gold standard of modern politics,

if not modern life, which also seems to demand

현대의 삶이 아니라 해도 우리는 무슨 일이 있더라도

that we each do whatever it takes to be able to say at the end of our days

우리의 나날의 마지막에 말할 수 있기 위해 무엇이든 해야 한다고요.

with peace and satisfaction, "I was just like everybody else."

평화롭고 만족한 체로 "나는 다른 모든 사람들과 같았다."라고요.

And this would be my message, too.

그리고 이건 제 메시지이기도 하고요.

So one night, I made one final call to my prospective campaign manager.

어느 날, 제 선거 매니저에게 최종 심사 전화를 했어요.

We'd do the things it'd take to win, but first he had one question:

우리는 이기기 위해 해야할 일을 했어요. 그 전에 매니저에게 질문이 하나 있었죠.

"Is there anything I need to know?"

"제가 알아야 할 무언가가 있나요?"

I held the phone and finally said,

잠시 뒤에 결국 말했어요.

"Well, you should probably know I'm gay."

"제가 게이란 걸 알아야 할 거예요."

Silence.

침묵.

"Hmm. I see," he nearly whispered,

"음, 알겠습니다." 거의 속삭이듯 했죠.

as if he'd found a shiny penny or a dead baby bird.

마치 반짝거리는 동전이나 죽은 아기 새를 발견한 것 처럼요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

"I'm glad you told me," he continued.

"제게 말해줘서 고마워요." 계속해서 말했어요.

"You definitely didn't make my job any easier.

"확실히 이 일을 더 쉽게 만들진 않겠네요.

I mean, you are in Texas.

제 말은, 당신은 텍사스에 있잖아요.

But it's not impossible, not impossible.

하지만 불가능한 건 아니에요.

But Casey, let me ask you something:

하지만 케이시, 한 가지 물어볼게요.

How are you going to feel when somebody, say, at a rally, calls you a faggot?

누군가 집회에서 당신을 게이라고 부르면 어떨 거 같아요?

And let's be real, OK?

솔직해져 봅시다.

You do understand that somebody might want to physically harm you.

누군가 당신을 신체적으로 해치고 싶을 수도 있어요.

I just want to know:

그게 알고 싶은 거예요.

Are you really ready for this?"

I wasn't.

안됐었어요.

And I could not understand --

그리고 이해할 수 없었어요.

could hardly breathe

숨을 거의 쉴 수 없었어요.

or think, or say a word.

생각도 못하겠고, 단 한마디도 못하겠었어요.

But to be clear: the boy that I was at that time

확실한 건 그때 겨우 소년이었던 저는

would have leapt at the chance to be harmed,

다칠 것 같은 순간엔 잽싸게 달아났을 거란 거예요.

to sacrifice everything, even life, for a cause.

대의 명분 때문에 모든 걸, 심지어 목숨까지 잃을 순간에는요.

There was something shocking, though --

충격적인 건요.

not that there should have been, but there was --

꼭 그럴 거란 건 아니지만

in the notion that he might be harmed for nothing more than being himself,

다른 것도 아닌 자기 자신으로 인해 다치게 될 거란 생각이 들었어요.

which he had not even tried to do in the first place.

애초에 시도할 생각 자체도 안했는데도요.

All that he -- all that I --

제가 하려고 해왔던, 되려고 해왔던 건

had tried to do and be was what I thought was asked of me.

제가 생각했던 것, 저에게 되물었던 거예요.

I was prominent for a 24-year-old:

24살에 유명했고

intelligent, I spoke well, dressed decent; I was an upstanding citizen.

똑똑했고, 말도 잘했고, 옷도 잘입었어요. 전 뛰어난 시민이었어요.

But the bargain I had accepted could not save me after all,

하지만 여태 받아들여왔던 합의는 결국엔 절 지켜주지 못했어요.

nor can it save you.

여러분도 지켜주지 못할 거고요.

You may have already learned this lesson,

여러분은 이미 이걸 배웠을 수도 있을 거예요.

or you will, regardless of your sexuality.

혹은 그러겠죠. 당신의 성과 상관없이요.

The queer receives a concentrated dose, no doubt,

동성애자에게는 의심할 여지없이 많은 관심이 집중돼요.

but repression is a bitter pill that's offered to us all.

탄압이라는 쓰디 쓴 알약의 형태로요.

We're taught to hide so many parts of who we are and what we've been through:

우리 자신이 누구인지, 어떤 일을 겪어왔는지 많은 부분을 숨기라고 배웠어요.

our love, our pain, for some, our faith.

우리의 사랑, 고통, 믿음을요.

So while coming out to the world can be hard,

세상 밖으로 나오는게 힘들 수도 있지만

coming in to all the raw, strange magic of ourselves can be much harder.

우리들의 생소하고 이상한 마법을 맞닥뜨리는 건 더 힘들 수도 있어요.

As Miles Davis said, "It takes a long time to sound like yourself."

마일즈 데비어스는 "자기 자신처럼 보이려면 꽤 오랜 시간이 걸려요." 라고 했어요.

That surely was the case for me.

바로 제 경우를 말하는 거였죠.

I had my private revelation that night at 24,

24살의 그날 저는 깨닫게 됐어요.

but mostly went on with my life.

그리고 일생 동안 계속됐어요.

I went on to Harvard Business School, started a successful nonprofit,

하버드 경영대학원에 다녔고, 성공적인 비영리 단체를 설립했고,

wound up on the cover of a magazine, on the stage at TED.

잡지의 표지를 장식했어요. TED 무대에서요.

(Laughter)

I had achieved, by my late 20s,

전 20대 후반에 모든 걸 이뤘어요.

about everything a kid is supposed to achieve.

한 아이가 이루려고 했던 모든 걸요.

But I was real cracked up:

not exactly having a nervous breakdown, but not too far off,

신경쇠약을 앓은 건 아니지만 아주 다르진 않았어요.

and awful sad either way.

똑같이 끔찍하게 슬펐죠.

I had never thought of being a writer,

작가가 되려고 생각해본 적은 단 한번도 없었는데요.

didn't even read, in earnest, until I was nearly 23.

솔직히 23살이 될 때 까지 본격적으로 책을 읽어본 적도 없어요.

But the book business is about the only industry

하지만 서적사업은 여러분 자신의 문제를

that will pay you to investigate your own problems, so --

탐구하기 위해 돈을 지불할 유일한 산업이기에...

(Laughter)

So I decided to give it a try,

그래서 시도해보기로 했어요.

to trace those cracks with words.

말로써 이 균열들을 파헤쳐 보려고요.

Now, what came out on the page was about as strange as I felt at that time,

which alarmed some people at first.

처음에 사람들을 놀라게 했던 것들이죠.

A respected writer called to stage his own intervention

어떤 저명한 작가가 초반부 몇장을 읽어보더니

after reading a few early chapters,

어째선지 저에게 전화를 걸었어요.

and he began, much like my mother,

그리곤 시작했어요. 마치 저의 어머니처럼.

"Hey, listen.

"들어봐요.

You've been hired to write an autobiography.

자서전 집필 작가로 고용되셨습니다.

It's a straightforward exercise.

단순한 작업이에요.

It's got a beginning, middle and end,

처음과 중간 그리고 끝이 있고,

and is grounded in the facts of your life.

당신의 삶 중의 사실에 기반을 두고 있어요.

And by the way, there's a great tradition of autobiography in this country,

그건 그렇고, 이 나라의 자서전엔 좋은 전통이 있어요.

led by people on the margins of society who write to assert their existence.

사회의 변두리에 있는 사람들이 자신들의 경험을 내세워 글을 쓰는 거죠.

Go buy some of those books and learn from them.

그 사람들의 책을 몇 권 사서 배워보도록 하세요.

You're going in the wrong direction."

당신은 잘못된 방향으로 가고 있어요."

But I no longer believed what we are taught --

하지만 저는 더 이상 믿지 않았어요.

that the right direction is the safe direction.

올바른 방향이 안전한 방향이라는 걸요.

I no longer believed what we are taught --

더 이상 믿지 않았어요.

that queer lives or black lives or poor lives are marginal lives.

성소수자의 삶, 흑인의 삶, 가난한 자의 삶이 변두리의 삶이라는걸요.

I believed what Kendrick Lamar says on "Section.80.":

켄드릭 라마가 "Section.80." 에서 노래한 걸 믿었어요.

"I'm not on the outside looking in.

"나는 밖에서 안을 들여다 보지 않아.

I'm not on the inside looking out.

나는 안에서 밖을 내다보지 않아.

I'm in the dead fucking center looking around."

난 빌어먹을 정 가운데에서 주위를 둘러봐."

(Laughter)

That was the place

거기가 바로 그 곳이었어요.

from which I hoped to work,

제가 일하기 바랬던,

headed in the only direction worth going, the direction of myself,

제 자신에게 향하는 뱡향으로써 갈 가치가 있는 유일한 방향이었어요.

trying to help us all refuse the awful bargains

받아들여야 한다고 배운 이 끔찍한 합의들을 거절하는 걸

we've been taught to take.

도와주려고 했죠.

We're taught to turn ourselves

우리는 자기 자신을 바꾸라고 배웠어요.

and our work into little nuggets that are easily digestible;

자신의 일을 조그마한 덩어리로 바꿔 쉽게 녹아 없어지도록 하라고 배웠죠.

taught to mutilate ourselves so that we make sense to others,

자신을 잘라내어 다른 사람들이 납득하게 하라고요.

to be a stranger to ourselves so the right people might befriend us

자기 자신을 이상한 사람으로 만들면 올바른 사람들이 우리를 도울 거라고요.

and the right schools might accept us, and the right jobs might hire us,

올바른 학교가 우릴 받아들일 것이고, 올바른 직종에 고용될 거라고요.

and the right parties might invite us,

올바른 집단에서 우릴 초대할 것이고

and, someday, the right God might invite us to the right heaven

언젠가, 올바른 신이 올바른 천국으로 우릴 인도할 거고,

and close his pearly gates behind us,

우리 뒤에 있는 새하얀 문을 닫으면

so we can bow down to Him forever and ever.

신에게 영원히 조아릴 수 있습니다.

These are the rewards, they say,

그게 그들이 말하는 보상이에요.

for our obedience:

우리의 복종에 대한,

to be a well-liked holy nugget,

올바른 신성한 덩어리가 되어서,

to be dead.

죽어서요.

And I say in return, "No, thank you."

그리고 저는 대답합니다. "고맙지만 사양할게요."

To the world and to my mother.

세상에게 그리고 저희 어머니에게요.

Well, to tell you the truth,

사실대로 말하면,

all I said was, "OK, Mom, I'll talk to you later."

제가 말한 건, "알았어요 엄마, 나중에 얘기해요."

(Laughter)

But in my mind, I said, "No, thank you."

하지만 마음속에는 "고맙지만 사양할게요." 라고 말했어요.

I cannot accept her bargain either.

어머니의 합의 또한 받아들일 수 없어요.

Nor should you.

여러분도 그래야 하고요.

It would be easy for many of us in rooms like this

이렇게 방속에 갇혀서 우리 자신이 안전하다고 여기고

to see ourselves as safe,

우리 자신을 그 자리에 머무르게 하는게

to keep ourselves over here.

쉬울 수도 있어요.

We speak well, we dress decent,

우리는 말도 잘하고, 옷도 잘 입고,

we're intelligent, people like us, or act like they do.

명석하고, 사람들은 우리를 좋아하죠. 혹은 그런 척 하거나.

But instead, I say that we should remember Lot's wife.

하지만 대신에, 롯의 처를 기억해야 한다고 생각합니다.

Jesus of Nazareth said it first to his disciples:

나자렛 예수는 그의 제자들에게 먼저 말했어요.

"Remember Lot's wife."

"롯의 처를 기억하라."

Lot, in case you haven't read the Bible recently,

was a man who set his family down in Sodom,

롯은 소돔에 가족을 둔 한 남자였어요.

in the midst of a wicked society that God decided he had to destroy.

소돔을 사악한 사회라 판단해 신이 파괴하기로 했었죠.

But God, being cruel, yet still a sap in part,

하지만 잔혹한 신은 그래도 여지가 있었는지

rushed two angels out to Sodom to warn Lot to gather up his folks

두 천사를 소돔으로 급히 보내 롯에게 그의 처자식들을 모아

and get out of Dodge.

도지에서 벗어나라고 경고했어요.

Lot heard the angel's warning, but delayed.

롯은 천사의 경고를 들었지만 꾸물거렸어요.

They didn't have all day to wait, so they grabbed Lot's hands

천사들은 하루종일 기다릴 수 없었기에 롯의 손과

and his two daughters' hands, and his wife's hands,

롯의 두 딸의 손과 롯의 아내의 손을 잡았어요.

and hurried them out of Sodom.

그리고 소돔에서 나오라고 재촉했어요.

And the angels shout,

천사들은 소리쳤어요.

"Escape to the mountain. Whatever you do, don't look back,"

"산으로 도망쳐라. 뭘 하던 간에 뒤를 돌아 보지 마라."

just as God starts raining down fire on Sodom and Gomorrah.

마침 신이 소돔과 고모라에 불을 내리기 시작했죠.

I can't figure out how Gomorrah got dragged into this.

어쩌다 고모라가 여기에 말려들었는지 알 수가 없네요.

But Lot and his folks are running,

하지만 롯과 처자식들은 달리고 있었어요.

fleeing all that destruction,

파괴로부터 도망치며

kicking up dust while the Lord rains down death,

신이 죽음을 내리는 동안 먼지를 휘날리며 달리고 있었어요.

and then, for some reason, Lot's wife looks back.

그러다 어떤 이유로 롯의 처가 뒤돌아봤어요.

God turns her into a pillar of salt.

신은 롯의 처를 소금 기둥으로 만들었어요.

"Remember Lot's wife," Jesus says.

"롯의 처를 기억하라"고 예수는 말했어요.

But I've got a question:

그런데 질문이 있는데요.

Why does she look back?

왜 뒤돌아봤을까요?

Does she look back because she didn't want to miss the mayhem,

그 아수라장을 놓치기 싫어서 뒤돌아봤을까요?

wanted one last glimpse of a city on fire?

불타는 도시를 마지막으로 한번 보고 싶었을까요?

Does she look back because she wanted to be sure that her people

고향 사람들이 한 숨 돌릴 만큼 위험으로부터 충분히 멀어졌는지

were far enough from danger to breathe a little easy?

확신하고 싶어서 뒤돌아봤을까요?

I'm so nosy and selfish sometimes, those likely would have been my reasons

저는 때로 참견 잘하고 이기적이지만 그래서 그의 입장에서 생각하는 겁니다.

if I'd been in her shoes.

But what if something else was going on with this woman, Lot's wife?

그런데 만약 다른 일이 롯의 처에게 일어나고 있었다면 어떨까요?

What if she could not bear the thought of leaving those people

만약 마을 사람들을 산 채로 타 죽게 두고 온다는 생각을

all alone to burn alive,

차마 견딜 수 없었다면요?

even for righteousness's sake?

정의를 위해서라지만 서도요.

Isn't that possible?

불가능할까요?

If it is, then this backward glance of a disobedient woman

만약 그렇다면, 이 여인이 불복종해 뒤를 돌아본 건

may not be a cautionary tale after all.

결국엔 경고성의 이야기가 아닐지도 모르죠.

It may be the bravest act in all the Bible,

성경 내에서 가장 용기있는 행동일 지도 몰라요.

even braver than the act that holds the whole Book together,

책 전체를 다루는 그 행동보다 더 용감할 수도 있어요.

the crucifixion.

십자가형이요.

We are told that up on Calvary, on an old rugged cross,

갈보리에서 오래되고 험한 십자가에 매달려

Jesus gave his life to save everybody:

예수는 모두를 구하려 생명을 내놓았죠.

billions and billions of strangers for all time to come.

수십억의 낯선 사람들을 영원히 구하려고요.

It's a nice thing to do.

정말 멋진 일이에요.

It made him famous, that's for sure.

이 일로 예수가 유명해졌죠. 확실해요.

But Lot's wife was killed,

하지만 롯의 처는 죽었어요.

turned into a pillar of salt,

소금 기둥으로 변해서요.

all because she could not turn her back on her friends,

친구들을 미처 외면할 수 없었기 때문에 그랬어요.

the wicked men of Sodom,

소돔의 그 사악한 인간들을요.

and nobody even wrote the woman's name down.

그리고 누구도 그녀의 이름을 남기지 않았죠.

Oh, to have the courage of Lot's wife.

롯의 처의 용기를 가지는 것이

That's the kind of courage we need today.

우리에게 오늘날 필요한 그 용기예요.

The courage to put ourselves over there.

우리 자신을 저 너머에 둘 용기예요.

The courage that says that either all of us have to be faggots,

우리 모두 게이가 되야 한다거나 누구도 게이가 될 수 없다고 말하는 용기예요.

or none of us can be faggots, for any of us to be free.

우리 누구라도 자유로워질 거예요.

The courage to stand with other vagabonds in the street,

길가의 다른 부랑자들과, 세상의 모든 비참한 자들과 함께

with all the wretched of the earth,

나란히 서 있을 수 있는 용기예요.

to form an army of the least of these,

이들과 함께 최소한의 군대를 만들 용기예요.

with the faith that from the naked crust of all we are,

우리 모두의 있는 그대로의 모습에서 나온 믿음과 함께

we can build a better world.

더 나은 세상을 만들 수 있을 거예요.
