Me, myself, and I.

من، خۆم، و من.

You may be tempted to use these words interchangeably

تۆ لەوانەیە ھەوڵت دابێت ئەم وشانە لە شوێنی یەکتر بەکاربھێنیت

because they all refer to the same thing,

چونکە ھەموویان ئاماژە بۆ ھەمان شت دەکەن.

but in fact, each one has a specific role in a sentence.

بەڵام لە ڕاستیدا، ھەریەک ڕۆڵێکی دیاریکراوی ھەیە لە ڕستەدا.

"I" is a subject pronoun,

"م" بکەری جێناوە،

"me" is an object pronoun,

"من" تەواوکەری جێناوە،

and "myself" is a reflexive or intensive pronoun.

و "خۆم" جێناوی خۆیییە.

So what does that reveal about where each word belongs?

کەواتە چی ئاشکرای دەکات دەربارەی ئەو شوێنی ھەریەک لە وشەکان دەگەڕێتەوە؟

Let's start with the difference between subject and object.

با دەست پێ بکەین بە جیاوازی نێوان بکەر و تەواوکەر.

Imagine the subject as the actor in a sentence

بیھێنە پێش چاوت بکەر وەک ئەکتەرێک لە ڕستەدا

and the object as the word that is acted upon.

و تەواوکەر وەک وشەیەک کە کاری لەسەر دەکات.

"I invited her but she invited me."

"من بانگھێشتم کرد بەڵام ئەو منی بانگھێشت کرد"

The object can also be the object of a preposition.

تەواوکەر ھەروەھا دەتوانێت ببێت بە تەواوکەری پیتی پێش بەند.

"She danced around me, while he shimmied up to me."

" لە دەوروبەرم سەمای کرد، لەو کاتەی ئەدرەوشایەوە بۆ من"

In some languages, like Latin and Russian,

لە ھەندێک زمان، وەک لاتین و ووسی،

most nouns have different forms that distinguish subjects from objects.

زۆربەی ناوەکان شێوەی جیاوازییان ھەیە کە بکەر جیا دەکاتەوە لە تەواوکەر .

However, in English, that's only true of pronouns.

ھەرچەندە ، لە ئینگلیزی، جێبەجێ دەکرێت تەنھا لەسەر جێناوەکان.

But so long as you know how to distinguish subjects from objects,

بەڵام ھەر چەندە تۆ بزانیت چۆن بکەر لە تەواوکەر جیا بکەیتەوە،

you can figure out what belongs where.

دەتوانیت ئاماژەی بکەیت چی دەگەڕێتەوە بۆ کوێ.

And when you encounter a more complicated sentence,

و کاتێک ڕووبەڕووی ڕستەی زیاتر ئاڵوزتر دەبیت،

say one that involves multiple subjects or objects,

دەڵێت یەکیان کە چەندین بکەر یان تەواوکەر دەگەڕێتەوە ،

and you're not sure whether to use "I" or "me,"

و تۆ دڵنیا نیت "من " بەکاربھێنیت یان "م جێناوی یەکەمی کەسی تاک"

just temporarily eliminate the other person,

تەنھا لادەبرێت لەسەر کەسی تر بە شێوەیەکی کاتی،

and once again distinguish subject from object.

و جارێکی تر بکەر لە تەواوکەر جیادەکاتەوە.

Here's another.

لێرەیە ھیتر.

You wouldn't say, "Me heard gossip," but sub in "I" and you're good to go.

ناێیت " گوێ من لە قسەو قسەڵۆک بوو، " بەڵام لە "م" و باشتر دەڕۆیت.

Then what about "myself?"

دوایی چی دەربارەی "خۆم"؟

This grand character is often substituted for "me" and "I"

ئەم پیتە گەورەیە زۆر جار لە جیاتی "من " و "م" دەبێت

because it seems more impressive.

چونکە کاریگەرتر دیارە.

"Please tell Jack or myself" may sound elegant,

"تکایە بە جاک بڵێ یان خۆم" ڕێک دیارە،

but in fact, "me" is the right pronoun here.

بەڵام لە ڕاستیدا، "من" جێناوی ڕاستە لێرە.

So where should you use "myself"?

جا پێویستە لە کوێ "خۆم" بەکاربھێنی؟

In its function as a reflexive pronoun,

کاربکات وەک جێناوی خۆ‌یی،

"myself" only works if it's the object of a sentence

"خۆم" تەنھا کاردەکات ئەگەر ببێتە تەواوکەری ڕستە

whose subject is "I."

بکەر " م" بێت.

"I consider myself the most important pronoun at this year's party."

"خۆم وا دادەنێم گرینگترین ڕاناوی ئاھەنگی ئەمساڵ بم".

"Myself" can also add emphasis as an intensive pronoun.

"خۆم" ھەروەھا دەتوانێت دووپات کردنەوە زیاد بکات ھەروەک جێناوی چڕ.

"I, myself, have heard others agree."

"من، خۆم، گوێم لەوانیتر بوو ڕازین."

The sentence works without it,

ئەم ڕستەیە کاردەکات بەبێ ئەوە،

but that extra pronoun gives it oomph.

بەڵام ئەم جێناوە زیادە وزەی پێ دەدات.

To check if "myself" belongs in a sentence,

سەیری بکەیت ئەگەر "خۆم" بگەڕێتەوە لە ڕستەیەکدا،

simply ensure that there's also an "I" that it's reflecting or intensifying.

بە سادەیی دڵنیا دەکاتەوە "من" لێرە ھەیە کە ئەوە ڕەنگ دەداتەوە یان بەتینە.

So that's "me," "myself," and "I,"

جا ئەمەیە "من "، "خۆم"، و "م،"

ever ready to represent you, yourself, and you.
