Me、myself と I

You may be tempted to use these words interchangeably

because they all refer to the same thing,

but in fact, each one has a specific role in a sentence.

"I" is a subject pronoun,

"me" is an object pronoun,

and "myself" is a reflexive or intensive pronoun.

So what does that reveal about where each word belongs?

では それぞれの単語の場所は その違いでどのように決まるのでしょう？

Let's start with the difference between subject and object.

それではまず主語と目的語の違いから 始めましょう

Imagine the subject as the actor in a sentence

主語は文章における 役者だと考えてください

and the object as the word that is acted upon.

目的語は影響を受ける単語です

"I invited her but she invited me."

“I”は彼女を招待し 彼女は“me”を招待します

The object can also be the object of a preposition.

目的語は前置詞の目的語にも なることができます

"She danced around me, while he shimmied up to me."

彼女が"around me"で踊り 彼は“up to me”にシミーを踊った

In some languages, like Latin and Russian,

most nouns have different forms that distinguish subjects from objects.

However, in English, that's only true of pronouns.

And when you encounter a more complicated sentence,

You wouldn't say, "Me heard gossip," but sub in "I" and you're good to go.

Then what about "myself?"

This grand character is often substituted for "me" and "I"

この偉大な個性は 時に“me”や“I”と置換されます

because it seems more impressive.

"Please tell Jack or myself" may sound elegant,

but in fact, "me" is the right pronoun here.

So where should you use "myself"?

ではどこに“myself”を 使えば良いのでしょうか？

In its function as a reflexive pronoun,

"myself" only works if it's the object of a sentence

“myself”は“I”を主語に持つ文章の

whose subject is "I."

目的語としてのみ使われます

"I consider myself the most important pronoun at this year's party."

私は “myself”が 今年のパーティーで最重要な代名詞だと思う

"Myself" can also add emphasis as an intensive pronoun.

“myself”は強意代名詞として 強さを与えることもできます

"I, myself, have heard others agree."

私－“myself” は 他の人々が賛成するのを聞いた

The sentence works without it,

この文章では私自身（myself)は なくても成り立ちます

but that extra pronoun gives it oomph.

しかし追加の代名詞が加わることで 力が加わるのです

To check if "myself" belongs in a sentence,

文中に“myself”がふさわしいか 確認するためには

simply ensure that there's also an "I" that it's reflecting or intensifying.
