This is Mabel.

ئەمە مەیبلە.

Mabel is an aphid, a small insect in the same order as cicadas, stink bugs,

مەیبل سنێکە، مێروویەکی بچووکە لە هەمان پۆلی خێزانی مێرووە زیانبەخشەکان،

and bed bugs.

مێروویەکی بێ باڵی خوێن مژە.

All these bugs pierce their prey and suck out vital fluids.

هەموو ئەم مێرووانە نێچیرەکانیان کوون دەکەن و شلەمەنییە بەسوودەکان دەمژن.

Aphids’ prey are plants.

سنەکان ڕووەکەکان دەکەنە ئامانج

And what aphids are after is buried within the plant,

ئەوەی سن لە ڕووەکەکان بۆی دەگەڕێت،

flowing in tubes made from single cells strung end-to-end.

دەچێتە ناو بۆریەکانەوە کە لە ڕیزێک خانە پێک هاتوون.

These are called sieve tubes and together they form the plumbing system

هەموو ئەمانە پێیان دەوترێت بۆری پاڵێوەر بەیەکەوە سیستمی بۆڕیەکانی ئاو پێک دەهێنن

for a plant’s most valuable resource: sap.

گرینگترین سەرچاوەی ڕووەکەکان: ئاووگی سروشتییە.

Sap is mostly water and sugar.

ئاووگ ڕێژەیەکی زۆر لە ئاو و شەکری تێدایە.

Some species’ sap has as much sugar per liter as a can of soda.

هەندێ جۆری ئاووگ ڕێژەی شەکر تێیدا یەک لیترە لە هەر قتوویەکدا.

Photosynthesis is constantly producing sugar.

ڕۆشنەپێکهاتن بە بەردەوامی شەکر بەرهەم دەهێنێت.

You can think of it as a chemical “pump” which generates incredibly high pressure—

up to 9 times that of a car tire— in the sieve tubes.

To feed, Mabel uses her stylet, which is a long, flexible needle.

She slowly worms it into the tissue, between the plant’s cells,

بە هێواشی دەچێتە ناو شانەکانەوە، لە نێوان خانەی ڕووەکەکان،

until she pierces one of those sieve tubes.

هەتاوەکو یەکێک لە بۆریە پاڵێوەرەکان کون دەکات.

Because the sap is under so much pressure,

چونکە ئاووگەکە لەژێر پەستانێکی زۆردا دەبێت،

Mabel doesn’t even have to suck it out of the plant.

مەیبڵ پێویستی بەوە نییە خۆی ڕووەکەکە بمژێت.

She just opens a valve in her head and lets the pressure push the sap

دەرچەی ناو سەری دەکاتەوە، بە پەستانێکی زۆر ئاووگەکە ڕادەکێشێت

through her digestive system.

بۆ ناو کۆئەندامی هەرسی.

We’ll come back to what comes out of her butt, but for now,

you should know that plants don’t want to be punctured and sipped.

دەبێت بزانیت کە ئەم ڕووەکانە نایان هەوێت کون بکرێن و پەنچەر بکرێن.

So they try to defend themselves.

بۆیە هەوڵ دەدەن بەرگری لەخۆیان بکەن.

One defense is the sap itself.

یەکێک لەو بەرگری کارانە ئاووگ خۆیەتی.

To see how that works, let’s hypothetically hook up

بۆ بینینی ئەو کردارەش، با بەشێوەیەکی خەیاڵی

some other insect’s digestive tract to a steady stream of sap.

سەرنج بدەینە سیستمی کۆئەندامی مێرووەکانی تر بۆ بەردەوام دەرچونی ئەم ئاووگە.

When that sap touches the insect’s cells, its high sugar content

کاتێک ئاووگەکە بەر خانەی مێرووەکە دەکەوێت بڕێکی زۆر شەکر

encourages the water in the cells to come out by osmosis…

هانی ئاو دەدات بە کرداری دەڵاندن بێتە دەرەوە...

exactly like salt encourages water to come out of a slug.

هاوشێوەی ئەوەی خوێ هانی دەرهاتنی ئاو لە کرمە لیقە سەوزەکانەوە بدات.

The more sap that passes through the insect, the more water it loses.

چەند ئاووگی زیاتر بە ناو لاشەی مێرووەکاندا بڕوات، ئاوی زیاتر لە دەست دەدات.

Eventually, it shrivels up and dies.

سەرەنجام، دەچێتەوە یەک و دەمرێت

Mabel’s gut, however, is packed with an enzyme called sucrase,

ڕیخۆڵەی مەیبڵ، پڕ دەبێت لە ئەنزیم کە پێی دەڵێن سوکرەیس...

which takes two molecules of sucrose and converts them into one molecule

کە دوو گەردی سوکەرۆز هەڵ دەگرێت و دەیگۆڕێت بۆ یەک گەردی

of fructose and one of… this three-unit sugar.

شەکری میوە و... شەکری سیانی.

Mabel burns the fructose for energy, leaving the three-unit-sugar behind.

مەیبڵ شەکری میوە دەسووتێنێت بۆ ووزە، و شەکری سیانی بە جێدەهێڵێت.

Now, how does that help her?

ئێستا، چۆن ئەوە یارمەتی دەدات؟

The more molecules of sugar that are dissolved in the sap,

هەرچەند گەردی شەکری تواوە لە ناو ئاووگەکەدا زیاتر بێت،

the more water it can suck out of Mabel’s cells.

ڕێژەی مژینی ئاو لە خانەی مەیبڵ زیاتر دەبێت.

By reducing the number of molecules of sugar in the sap,

Mabel reduces its ability to suck water out of her cells.

Plant sap neutralized.

Now that means Mabel can feed for days, getting all the energy

she needs to reproduce.

Some aphid species have an incredible life cycle.

هەندێ جۆری سن سوڕی ژیانیان زۆر سەر سووڕهێنەرە.

For example, the green peach aphid.

بۆ نموونە، سنی قۆخی سەوز.

During the fall, males and females mate, and the females lay eggs.

لە کاتی جووت بوندا، نێرەکان و مێیەکان هاوەڵی یەک دەبن، مێیەکان هێلکە دادەنێن.

But in the spring, when the eggs hatch, all the nymphs that emerge are female.

بەڵام لە بەهاردا، کاتێک هێلکەکان هەڵ دێن، هەموو کرمۆکەکان مێ دەبن.

When those females reach maturity, they don’t lay eggs.

کاتێک ئەو مێیانە دەگەنە قۆناغی پێگەیشتن، هێلکە ناکەن.

Instead, they give birth to live young… that are clones of themselves…

لە بری ئەوە، وەچەی تازە دروست دەکەن، کە لەبەرگیراوەی خۆیانن.

and already pregnant… with their own clones.

لەگەڵ خانە لەبەرگیراوەکانی خۆیان دوو گیان دەبن.

So, these female aphids have two generations of baby aphid clones

ئەم سنە مێیانە دوو وەچە لە سنی لەبەر گیراوە بەرهەم دەهێنن

forming inside themselves at the same time.

لە هەمان کاتدا لە ناوەوەی خۆیاندا شێوە وەردەگرن.

Scientists call this telescopic development.

زانایان بەم جۆرە زۆر بوونە دەڵێن زۆر بوونی تەلیسکۆبی.

That means that aphids can make more of themselves fast—

ئەمەش مانای وایە سنەکان بە خێرایی زۆر دەبن،

there can be 20 generations within a single season—

لە ماوەی یەک وەرزدا دەتوانن ٢٠ وەچە بخەنەوە--

and that means lots of aphid poop.

مانای وایە ڕێژەی پاشەڕۆیان زۆرە.

Mabel can poop her entire body weight every two hours,

مەیبڵ هەموو دوو کاتژمێر جارێک لاشەی خاڵی دەکاتەوە لە پاشەڕۆ،

making her one of the most prolific poopers on the planet.

ئەمەش وای لێدەکات زۆرترین پاشەڕۆی هەبێت لەسەر هەسارەکە.

Some aphid populations can produce hundreds of kilograms of poop per acre.

هەندێک سن دەتوانن بە ڕێژەیی سەد کیلۆگرام لە فەدانێکدا پاشەڕۆ بکەن.

Now, aphid poop is not like your poop.

پاشەڕۆی سن، وەک پاشەڕۆی مرۆڤ نییە.

Chemically, it’s not all that different from sap;

کیمیاییانە جیاوازیەکی وەهای ؛لەگەڵ ئاووگدا نییە

it’s a clear and colorless sweet, syrupy liquid.

ڕوونە و بێ ڕەنگ و شیرینە، واتا شلەیەکی شیرینە.

You might already know it by a different name: honeydew.

لەوانەیە ئێوە ناوێکی تری لێ بنێن: گەزۆ.

Other species love honeydew.

جۆرەکانی تر حەزیان لە گەزۆیە.

Some species of ants love it so much they sort of

هەندێک جۆری مێروولە زۆر حەزیان لێیەتی و کۆی دەکەنەوە

herd and defend entire aphid colonies.

کۆی دەکەنەوە و لە ناوەوەی شارە مێروولەکاندا دەیپارێزن.

In return, the ants get a steady supply of sweet honeydew,

مێروولەکان ڕێژەیەکی جێگیری گەزۆی شیرینیان دەست دەکەوێت،

which they can drink directly from the aphids’ butts.

ڕاستەوخۆ دەتوانن لە بەشی دواوەی سنەکەدا بیخۆنەوە.

Bottom’s up!

بەشی دواوەی بەرز دەکاتەوە!

Humans love honeydew, too.

مرۆڤیش بەهەمان شێوە حەزی لە گەزۆیە

Several Native American tribes used to harvest it from tall reeds

زۆربەی هەرێمی ئەمەریکییەکان لە قامیشە درێژەکاندا کۆیدەکەنەوە

and make it into cake.

لە ناو کێکدا بەکاریدەهێنن.

And some species of bee make honey from honeydew,

هەندێک جۆری هەنگ لەو گەزۆیە هەنگوین دروست دەکەن،

which humans then harvest and eat.

کە دواتر مرۆڤەکان کۆی دەکەنەوە و دەیخۆن.

So plants make the sap, which is eaten and pooped out by aphids,

کەواتە ڕووەکەکان ئاووگ بەرهەم دێنن، پاشان لە لایەن سنەوە دەخورێت و دەردەدرێت،

regurgitated by bees, harvested by humans,

لە لایەن هەنگەکانەوە هەرس دەکرێت و مرۆڤەکانیش ئەم بەروو بوومە کۆدەکەنەوە

and dolloped into a cup of Earl Grey tea.

و دەیخەنە ناو کوپێکی چای ئێڕاڵ گرێی.
