This day my students and I play the Opposites Game

ئەم ڕۆژە من و خوێندکارەکانم یاری وشەی دژ واتاکان دەکەین

with a line from Emily Dickinson. My life had stood

بە ڕستەیەك لە ئێمیڵی دیکینسۆنەوە. ژیانم وەک

a loaded gun, it goes and I write it on the board,

دەمانچەیەکی پڕ کراو وەستا، دەڕوات و من لەسەر تەختەکە دەینووسم،

pausing so they can call out the antonyms –

وەستانێک بۆ ئەوەی بتوانن ناوی دژ واتاکان بهێنن -

For a moment, very much like the one between

بۆ ساتێك، لێکچوونی نێوانیان زیاتر لە

lightning and its sound, the children just stare at me,

بروسکە و دەنگەکەی دەچوو، منداڵەکان بەس سەیری منیان دەکرد،

and then it comes, a flurry, a hail storm of answers –

و دواتر دێت، ئاژاوەیەك، زریانێک لە وەڵامەکان-

Flower, says one. No, Book, says another. That's stupid,

،یەکێکیان گووتی، گوڵ. یەکێکی دیکە گوتی، نا، پەرتووک. سێهەم هاواری کرد،

cries a third, the opposite of a gun is a pillow. Or maybe

ئەوە گەمژانەیە، دژی وشەی چەك پەڕە. یان لەوانەیە

a hug, but not a book, no way is it a book. With this,

باوەشێک بێت، بەڵام پەرتووك نا، هەرگیز پەرتووك نابێت. لەگەڵ ئەوەدا،

the others gather their thoughts

ئەوانیتر بیر و بۆچونەکانیان کۆکردەوە

and suddenly it’s a shouting match. No one can agree,

و لەناکاو بوو بە یاری هاوار کردن. کەس ناتوانێ هاوڕا بێت،

for every student there’s a final answer. It's a song,

بۆ هەر قوتابیەك وەڵامێکی کۆتایی هەیە. ئەوە گۆرانیە،

a prayer, I mean a promise, like a wedding ring, and

نزایە، مەبەستم بەڵێنە، وەکو ئەڵقەی هاوسەرگیری، و

later a baby. Or what’s that person who delivers babies?

دواتر مناڵە. یان ئەو کەسە چییە کە منداڵەکان دەگوازێتەوە؟

A midwife? Yes, a midwife. No, that’s wrong. You're so

مامانە؟ بەڵێ، مامانە. نا، ئەوە هەڵەیە. تۆ زۆر

wrong you’ll never be right again. It's a whisper, a star,

هەڵەی هەرگیز جارێکی تریش ڕاست نابیت. ئەوە چرپەیە، ئەستێرەیەک،

it's saying I love you into your hand and then touching

ئەوە دەڵێت خۆشمدەوێیت لەسەر دەستت و دواتر دەستدان

someone's ear. Are you crazy? Are you the president

لە گوێی کەسێك. تۆ شێتیت؟ ئایا تۆ سەرۆکی

of Stupid-land? You should be, When's the election?

دوورگەی گەمژەکانیت؟ لەوانەیە تۆ بیت، هەڵبژاردنەکە چ کاتێکە؟

It’s a teddy bear, a sword, a perfect, perfect peach.

ورچی یاریکردنە، شمشێرە، قۆخێکی زۆر زۆر نایابە.

Go back to the first one, it's a flower, a white rose.

بگەڕێنەوە بۆ ئەوەی یەکەم، ئەوە گوڵە، گوڵێکی سپی.

When the bell rings, I reach for an eraser but a girl

کاتێك زەنگەکە لێیدا، من گەشتمە ڕەشکەرەوەیەک بەڵام کچێک

snatches it from my hand. Nothing's decided, she says,

بەزۆر لە دەستمی دەرهێنا. ئەو گووتی، هیچ شتێک دیاری کراو نییە،

We’re not done here. I leave all the answers

ئێمە لێرە تەواو نەبووین. من هەموو وەڵامەکانم جێهێشت

on the board. The next day some of them have

لەسەر تەختەکە. ڕۆژی دواتر هەندێکیان

stopped talking to each other, they’ve taken sides.

وەستابوون لە قسەکردن لەگەڵ یەکتر، بوو بوون بە چەند لایەنێک.

There's a Flower club. And a Kitten club. And two boys

لایەنی گوڵ هەبوو. و لایەنی بەچکە پشیلە. و دوو کوڕ

calling themselves The Snowballs. The rest have stuck

ناویان لە خۆیان نابوو تۆپەڵە بەفر. ئەوانەی دیکە مابوونەوە

with the original game, which was to try to write

لەگەڵ یاریە بنچینەییەکە، کە هەوڵدان بوو بۆ نووسینی

something like poetry.

شتێکی وەك هۆنراوە.

It's a diamond, it's a dance,

ئەوە ئەڵماسە، ئەوە سەمایە،

the opposite of a gun is a museum in France.

دژی وشەی دەمانچە مۆزەخانەیەکە لە فەڕەنسا.

It's the moon, it's a mirror,

ئەوە مانگە، ئاوێنەیە،

it's the sound of a bell and the hearer.

ئەوە دەنگی زەنگێک و گوێگرەکەیەتی.

The arguing starts again, more shouting, and finally

مشتومڕەکە دەستی پێکردەوە، هاوار کردنی زیاتر، و لە کۆتاییدا

a new club. For the first time I dare to push them.

لایەنێکی تازە. بۆ یەکەم جار من وێرام پاڵیان بنێم.

Maybe all of you are right, I say.

گوتم، لەوانەیە هەمووتان ڕاست بن.

Well, maybe. Maybe it's everything we said. Maybe it’s

باشە، لەوانەیە. لەوانەیە هەموو ئەوانە بێت کە گوتمان. لەوانەیە ئەوە

everything we didn't say. It's words and the spaces for words.

هەموو ئەو شتانە بێت کە نەمان گوتووە. ئەوە ووشەکان و بۆشاییەکانی ووشەکانە.

They're looking at each other now. It's everything in this

ئێستا ئەوان سەیری یەکتر دەکەن. ئەمە هەموو شتێکە لەنێو ئەم

room

ژوورە

and outside this room and down the street and in the sky.

و لە دەرەوەی ئەم ژوورە و لەسەر شەقامەکان و لە ئاسماندا.

It's everyone on campus and at the mall, and all the people

ئەوە هەموو کەسەکانی زانکۆ و مۆڵەکانە، و هەموو ئەو خەڵکانەی

waiting at the hospital. And at the post office. And, yeah,

لە نەخۆشخانەکان چاوەڕێ دەکەن. و لە پۆستەخانەکان. و، بەڵێ،

it's a flower, too. All the flowers. The whole garden.

ئەمە گوڵە، ھەروەھا. هەموو گوڵەکان. تەواوی باخچەکان.

The opposite of a gun is wherever you point it.

دژی چەك هەر شوێنێکە کە ئاماژەی پێدەکەیت.

Don’t write that on the board, they say. Just say poem.

ئەوان گوتیان، ئەوە لەسەر تەختەکە مەنووسە. تەنها هۆنراوە بڵێ.

Your death will sit through many empty poems.
