You know, back in the '40s and '50s,

the original standard television had a 4 to 3 width to height ratio.

The problem is, hardly anybody today treats video content in a 4 to 3 ratio.

See, this whole problem started

사람들이 극장이나 집에서 편하게 영화를 보고 싶어할 때

when people wanted to watch movies from the theater

in the comfort of their own homes.

Movie screens are considerably larger than our home television.

영화관 화면은 집에 있는 티브보다 훨씬 더 큽니다.

More important, the screen is completely different rectangle

and can't mathematically fit on our TV screens without manipulation.

A typical TV is one and a third times wider than it is tall

Some movie screens could be up to three times as wide as it is tall.

So what're we going to do to make it fit? Well, we have all kinds of options.

Well, we could squeeze and stretch and mangle everything onto the screen,

to make it all fill up,

and everyone would look ridiculously thin and compressed.

The good news is the sound would be just fine,

particularly the actors in the movie.

We could just cut a chunk of the original movie like a cookie cutter

and just see that frame of the movie.

The problem with that would be people and objects

would be speaking from off the screen, or, even worse, they might be cut in half.

Some movie editors use what's called the "pan and scan" technique

to allow the full height of the TV screen to be used,

Now let's do a little quick math.

If we compare a major cinematic film produced on a 2.35 to 1 aspect frame

2.35:1 비율로 만든 영화관용 영화를

with my standard 4 to 3 TV screen,

we find out that only 55% of the movie can actually fit on the screen

at any one time.

Just over half!

You've seen the disclaimer at the beginning of the movie on TV or DVD

여러분은 티브이나 DVD 영화 시작 부분에 양해를 구한다는 문구를 볼 수 있습니다.

that says, "This film has been modified

"이 영화는 티브이 화면에 맞추기 위해 원래 영화 크기를 고쳤습니다."라고 하죠.

from its original format to fit on your TV screen."

Well, what it should say is,

글쎄요, 사실은 "우리는 영화의 55%만 골라서 보여주고 있어요."라고 말해야겠죠.

"We are only displaying 55% of the movie of our choosing."

Now for all the full-screen TV lovers,

전체 화면을 쓰는 티브이를 좋아하는 사람들에게

this is your dilemma:

이건 고민거리이죠. 영화를 다 보고 싶나요?

do you want to see all the movie, or is 55% good enough?

아니면 55%라도 괜찮나요? 새로 나온 티브이는 어때요?

How about new TVs?

이번 세기에 들어와서 일부 대형 화면 티브이는

Around the start of the century, some widescreen TVs

emerged in a 16 to 9, or 1.78 times wider than it is tall.

16:9 비율, 그러니까 너비가 넓이보다 1.78 배인 비율로 나왔어요.

Well, this screen fits the movie a little better,

자, 이런 화면은 영화를 조금 더 잘 보여주죠.

but still only shows 75% of the original movie at one time.

하지만 아직도 한 번에 원래 영화의 75%만 보여주죠.

Suppose someone made a TV for your living room

거실에서 전체 영화를 다 볼 수 있는 2.35:1 비율의 티브이를 누가 만든다고 합시다.

that was actually 2.35 to 1 to show those full movies?

Well, the TV with the same height as the most current 50-inch TVs -

글쎄요, 지금 가장 많이 유통되는 50인치 티브이와 같은 높이를 가지는

that TV would be close to six feet long.

티브이는 길이가 1.8미터쯤 될 거에요.

거기다 영화를 볼 때는 전체 화면을 쓰겠죠.

And on top of that, you'd only use the full screen when you watched movies.

Most of the other content would have to be stretched,

다른 내용의 대부분이 늘어나거나

or have empty space on the sides of the screen.

화면 옆에 빈 공간이 생길 거에요.

Of course, there is one more option.

물론 방법이 하나 더 있어요. 집에 있는 티브이 너비에 맞추려고

We can just shrink the movie screen proportionally,

to fit the width of your home television.

영화 화면을 같은 비율로 줄일 수 있죠.

We can mathematically scale the original to fit exactly the width of the screen

이제 화면 너비에 정확하게 맞추기 위해 원본을 수학적으로 조절할 수 있어요.

and this'll preserve the entire movie screen,

그러면 전체 영화 화면은 유지하겠지만 아주 많은 사람들이 정말 싫어하는

but show the infamous black bars along the top and bottom

보기 싫은 검은색 줄이 위아래에 나타날거에요.

that so many television watchers abhor.

Of course, now you can argue that we're only using 75% of that screen.

물론 그 화면의 75%만 쓰고 있다고 여러분은 주장할 수 있어요.

그런데 진짜 문제는 바로 그거에요.

And that is where the real question is:

여러분은 전체 화면을 바랍니까? 아니면 영화 전체를 보고 싶습니까?

do you want your full screen, or do you want to see the entire movie?

아마도 여러분한테는 더 큰 티브이가 필요하겠죠.

Most likely, you just need a bigger TV.
