At the temple of the fisherman, Quexo, the village shaman,

마을의 주술사인 켁소는 어부의 사원에서

바다를 바라보며 얼굴을 찌푸립니다.

looks out over the ocean and frowns.

It’s a still morning– unusually still,

아침이라 고요했지만 유달리 적막했으며

and the lack of wind is the latest in a series of troubling signs.

바람이 없는 것은 최근 잇단 불길한 징조의 연속입니다.

The year is 1400 BCE.

기원전 1400년 당시

Quexo’s village sits in the dusty, treeless desert

켁소가 살던 마을은 먼지가 자욱하며 나무도 없는

between the towering Andes and Pacific Ocean.

안데스 산맥과 태평양 사이의 사막에 있습니다.

The villagers live off the sea, harvesting reeds,

바다에 생계를 의지하는 마을 사람들은

갈대를 모아서 볕에 말려 어선을 만듭니다.

drying them in the sun, and using them to build fishing boats.

Every day in the summer,

여름이면 매일 남자들은 이 배를 타고 상어와 다른 물고기를 사냥하고

the men set out on these boats to hunt shark and other fish

while the women harvest shellfish and sea urchins.

여자들은 조개와 성게를 줍습니다.

In winter, storms bring powerful waves, which cross the vast ocean unobstructed

겨울에는 폭풍이 몰고 온 거센 파도가

광활하고 탁 트인 바다를 거침없이 가로질러서 해안을 때리죠.

to detonate on these shores.

Most years, Quexo’s village catches more than enough fish.

대개 켁소의 마을은 물고기를 풍족하게 잡지만

But this year, the winds have died and the fish have dwindled.

올해는 바람이 불지 않았고 물고기도 줄었습니다.

Quexo has seen this pattern before:

켁소는 이런 일을 전에도 겪은 적이 있는데

물고기가 사라지면서 거센 비가 몰아치고

the fish disappear, then the violent rains arrive,

causing flash floods that dissolve mud bricks and wash away settlements.

급격한 홍수가 발생해서 흙벽돌이 무너지고 집들도 쓸려가죠.

He needs to stop the bad weather before the storms come—

켁소는 폭풍이 오기 전에 악천후를 막아야 합니다.

his only hope is a special ritual he’s been planning.

그의 유일한 희망은 그가 준비하는 특별한 의식입니다.

Quexo spends much less time in the ocean than the other villagers.

켁소는 마을 사람들보다 바다에 나가는 시간이 무척 적습니다.

He became a shaman after seeing a sign in the sea one morning—

켁소는 어느 날 아침 바다에서 징조를 보고 주술사가 되었습니다.

like his father and grandfather before him.

아버지와 할아버지의 뒤를 따랐던 것이죠.

This morning,

이날 아침, 그는 해가 뜨자마자 마을의 신성한 산으로 향합니다.

he walks to the nearby sacred mountain as the sun rises.

There, he gathers ceremonial cactus and herbs like “horse tail,”

거기서 의식에 필요한 선인장과

‘말꼬리‘, ‘돌 깨기’, 쥐오줌풀 같은 약초,

“stonebreaker," and valerian, along with the mineral hematite.

그리고 적철석을 모읍니다.

Back in the village, everyone is preparing to leave

한편 마을에서는 모두가 종교 축제를 즐기러

for a religious festival at a large temple inland.

내륙에 있는 큰 사원으로 떠날 채비를 하고 있습니다.

The festival marks the beginning of what is usually the season of abundance,

대개는 축제에서 풍년의 시작을 기념하지만

but with the signs pointing to storms, Quexo isn’t feeling too celebratory.

켁소는 폭풍이 닥칠 거란 징조 때문에 축제에 집중할 수가 없죠.

Whole families travel to the festival, where they camp for a few days.

모든 가족이 축제에 참여하고 그곳에서 며칠간 야영을 합니다.

They’ve packed seaweed, carved bones, gourd bowls, reed mats,

해초, 뼈 조각품, 조롱박 그릇, 갈대 돗자리와

and other goods to trade in the market around the temple.

다른 상품들을 챙겨 와서 사원 주변 시장에서 거래했죠.

Quexo inspects the goods to make sure everything is of the finest quality.

켁소는 상품들을 요모조모 따져보고 모두가 최상의 품질인 걸 확인합니다.

He brings the herbs he gathered to trade for cinnabar,

켁소는 채집한 약초를 ‘진사’와 교환하려 합니다.

a mineral that comes from the highlands in the Andes.

그 광물은 안데스 산맥의 고지대에서 납니다.

He needs cinnabar for his ritual to ward off the storms.

진사는 폭풍을 막는 의식에 필요한 것입니다.

Around lunchtime, the sprawling temple rises out of the desert ahead.

점심 무렵이 되자 사원의 떠들썩함이 사막까지 뻗어나갑니다.

People have come from all along the coast and the foothills.

사람들이 해안가와 기슭에서 몰려왔습니다.

The women handle trade transactions— they’re looking for cotton and ceramics.

상품 거래는 여자들이 하는데 솜과 도자기를 찾고 있습니다.

Men aren’t usually allowed to do the trading,

대개 남자들은 거래에 끼지 못하지만 주술사들은 예외죠.

but shamans are an exception.

Though Quexo is a man, during rituals he becomes half man, half woman,

의식 중에 켁소는 남자가 아니라 반은 남자 반은 여자입니다.

and this ambiguity makes his role more flexible outside ceremonies too.

이러한 모호함 덕분에 일상에서도 그의 역할은 유연합니다.

Quexo can’t find any cinnabar in the market,

시장에는 켁소가 찾는 진사가 없어서

so he heads to the main temple,

광장에서 노는 아이들을 피해서 중앙 사원으로 발걸음을 돌립니다.

dodging children playing in the plaza.

He puts on his ceremonial garb: red face paint, earrings,

그는 의식용 복장을 준비합니다.

얼굴을 붉게 칠하고 귀걸이를 한 다음

and a necklace of shark’s teeth and vertebrae.

상어 이빨과 등뼈로 만든 목걸이를 걸칩니다.

Inside, the ceremonies are already underway,

안에서는 의식이 이미 시작됐고

and the shamans have drunk the sacred cactus drink.

주술사들이 둘러앉아 신성한 선인장 음료를 마셨습니다.

Many of them are Quexo’s friends from festivals over the years,

그들 중 대다수는 켁소와 오랜 축제 친구들이지만

but he doesn’t see the mountain shamans who would have cinnabar.

산에서 온 주술사들 중에서 진사를 가져온 사람은 없습니다.

그는 불안해지기 시작합니다.

He begins to panic.

If the highland shamans don’t show up,

고지대의 주술사들마저 축제에 오지 않으면

his only option will be to make the long walk into the mountains.

먼 산으로 직접 가야만 하기 때문이죠.

It’s a dangerous journey that takes five days,

5일이나 걸리는 위험한 길입니다.

precious time he doesn’t have to waste.

소중한 시간을 낭비하는 것이죠.

But perhaps he has no choice.

하지만 방법이 없을 것 같습니다.

He refuses the sacred cactus and sets off toward the mountains.

신성한 선인장 음료를 마다하고 산을 향해 길을 나섭니다.

As he leaves the settlement behind, he sees a group approaching.

사원을 뒤로 하고 떠날 때 그를 향해 다가오는 무리가 보입니다.

He recognizes them as highlanders by their llamas.

그들이 탄 라마를 보니 고지대 사람들이 틀림없습니다.

He dashes toward their shaman.

켁소는 그들의 주술사에게 달려가서

Barely pausing to say hello, he offers him hematite, dried seaweed,

인사를 나눌 틈도 없이 적철석과 말린 해초 그리고

and empty shells to grind up for lime and chew with coca leaves.

빻아서 석회로 만들어 코카잎과 씹기 좋은 조개껍데기를 건냅니다.

In return, the other shaman gives him the precious cinnabar.

상대편 주술사는 그 대가로 귀중한 진사를 줍니다.

With the key to his ritual in hand,

의식에 필요한 열쇠를 손에 쥐고

Quexo heads home to the temple of the fisherman

켁소는 자신의 집이 있는 어부의 사원으로 향하며

in hopes of turning the tide.

파도가 가라앉기를 기도합니다.
