STILL, ALREADY, YET Meanings and Differences with Example English Sentences

In this video, I’m going to talk about the similar English time expressions

‘still’, ‘already’, and ‘yet’.

「まだ」、「もう」、「まだ」 について話します 。

These time expressions can be confusing,

but this video will help you understand the difference and when to use them.

Let’s start with ‘still’.

「静止」から始めましょう。

It is used as an adverb.

副詞として使われます。

It is used to show situations that started in the past and continue to the present time.

過去に始まり

現在まで続いている状況を示すために使用されます。

Let’s look at some example sentences.

いくつかの例文を見てみましょう。

The first sentence says, ‘It is still snowing.’

最初の文は「まだ雪が降っています。」

The word 'still' emphasizes that snowing started in the past and it continues now.

「まだ」という言葉は、雪が過去に降り始め

、現在も続いていることを強調します。

The next sentence says,

次の文には、「私の祖父は今でも毎朝ジョギングをしています。」とあります。

‘My grandfather still jogs every morning.’

So here I want to show that my grandfather is old

but he still continues this action now.

Now, I will talk about ‘already’.

。 さて、今回は「すでに」についてお話します。

It is also an adverb.

副詞でもあります。

We use ‘already’ to refer to something which has happened before the moment of speaking.

私たちは、話す瞬間より前に起こったことを指すのに「すでに」を使います。

We use already to emphasize some unexpected or surprising situation.

予期せぬ、または驚くべき状況を強調するために、「すでに」を使用します。

Let’s look at some examples.

いくつかの例を見てみましょう。

The first sentence says,

最初の文は、「ジェニーはすでにここにいるので、始めましょう」と述べています。

‘Jenny's already here so we can start.’

We didn't expect Jenny to be here but she is here.

ジェニーがここに来るとは予想していませんでしたが、彼女はここにいます。

So we want to emphasize that unexpected situation.

したがって、私たちはその予期せぬ状況を強調したいと思います。

The next sentence says,

次の文は、「夕食を終えたところですが、またお腹が空いています。」となります。

‘We have just finished dinner but we're already hungry again.’

We didn't expect to be hungry again because we just had dinner.

夕食を食べたばかりだったので、またお腹が空くとは思いませんでした。

But unexpectedly we are hungry again

でも、意外とまたお腹が空くので

so we say, ‘we're already hungry again’.

、「もうまたお腹が空いている」と言うのです。

Now, I will talk about ‘yet’.

今回は「まだ」についてお話します。

It is an adverb.

副詞です。

It is used to ask if something has happened or occurred.

何かが起こったか、起こったかを尋ねるのに使用されます。 また

It can also be used to show that something has not happened

、話している時点では 何かが起こっていないことを示すためにも使用されます

at the moment of speaking.

。

It is usually placed at the end of a sentence.

通常は文の最後に置かれます。

Let’s look at some example sentences.

いくつかの例文を見てみましょう。

The first sentence says,

最初の文は、

‘She hasn't done her homework yet.’

「彼女はまだ宿題をしていません。」

The ‘yet’ at the end of this sentence

と述べています。 この文の最後の「まだ」は、

shows that at this moment, at this moment of speaking,

この瞬間、話しているこの瞬間に、

she hasn't completed this task.

She hasn't done her homework.

However, it also means that she will do it soon.

The next sentence says,

Similarly, the ‘yet’ at the end of this sentence means at this time they're still sleeping.

They haven't woken up yet.

But they will wake up soon.

Now, let's do a checkup.

In this conversation, there are two sentences.

この会話には 2 つの文があります。

In the sentences, we need to use the words

文章では、

‘still’, ‘already’, and ‘yet’.

「まだ」、「すでに」、「まだ」という単語を使用する必要があります。

Take a moment to think about where we use these words.

Let's look together.

‘A’ says, ‘We haven't finished lunch _blank_.’

「A」は、「昼食を_blank_まだ終えていません。」と言います。

In this case, we're trying to emphasize that at the moment of speaking,

この場合、

this action hasn't happened

このアクションはまだ起こっていない

and so we need to use the word ‘yet’.

ため、「まだ」という言葉を使用する必要があることを強調しようとしています。

‘We haven't finished lunch yet’.

「私たちはまだ昼食を終えていません。」

The next part of a sentence says,

文の次の部分には、「私たちは _blank_ 食べています」と書かれています。

‘We're _blank_ eating.’

Here, we want to show that an action is continuing

ここでは、アクションが継続していることを示したい

so we should use ‘still’.

ので、「still」を使用する必要があります。

‘we're still eating’

‘B’ expresses surprise.

「B」は驚きを表します。

‘Oh really? I’ve _blank_ finished my lunch.’

'まあ、本当に？私は昼食を_空白_終えました。」

Which word can show surprise because of an unexpected situation?

予期せぬ事態に対する驚きを表す言葉はどれですか?

The answer is ‘already’.

答えは「すでに」です。

‘Oh really? I’ve already finished my lunch.’

'まあ、本当に？もうお昼ご飯は食べ終わったんですよ。」

Let's look at it all together.

Again, ‘A’ says,

もう一度、「A」は

‘We haven't finished our lunch yet we're still eating.’

And ‘B’ says,

Now you know the difference between ‘still’, ‘already’, and ‘yet’.
