STILL, ALREADY, YET Meanings and Differences with Example English Sentences

In this video, I’m going to talk about the similar English time expressions

এই ভিডিওতে, আমি একই ধরনের ইংরেজি সময়ের অভিব্যক্তিগুলি

‘still’, ‘already’, and ‘yet’.

'still', 'already', এবং 'yet' নিয়ে কথা বলতে যাচ্ছি ।

These time expressions can be confusing,

এই সময়ের অভিব্যক্তিগুলি বিভ্রান্তিকর হতে পারে,

but this video will help you understand the difference and when to use them.

Let’s start with ‘still’.

'স্থির' দিয়ে শুরু করা যাক।

It is used as an adverb.

এটি একটি ক্রিয়াবিশেষণ হিসাবে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

It is used to show situations that started in the past and continue to the present time.

এটি এমন পরিস্থিতি দেখাতে ব্যবহৃত হয় যা অতীতে শুরু হয়েছিল

এবং বর্তমান সময়ে অব্যাহত রয়েছে।

Let’s look at some example sentences.

আসুন কিছু উদাহরণ বাক্য দেখি।

The first sentence says, ‘It is still snowing.’

প্রথম বাক্যটি বলে, 'এখনও তুষারপাত হচ্ছে।'

The word 'still' emphasizes that snowing started in the past and it continues now.

'এখনও' শব্দটি জোর দেয় যে তুষারপাত অতীতে শুরু হয়েছিল

এবং এখন তা অব্যাহত রয়েছে।

The next sentence says,

পরের বাক্যটি বলে, 'আমার দাদা এখনও প্রতিদিন সকালে জগিং করেন।'

‘My grandfather still jogs every morning.’

So here I want to show that my grandfather is old

তাই এখানে আমি দেখাতে চাই যে আমার দাদার বয়স হয়েছে

but he still continues this action now.

কিন্তু তিনি এখনও এই কাজটি চালিয়ে যাচ্ছেন।

Now, I will talk about ‘already’.

এখন, আমি 'ইতিমধ্যে' সম্পর্কে কথা বলব।

It is also an adverb.

এটি একটি ক্রিয়াপদও।

We use ‘already’ to refer to something which has happened before the moment of speaking.

কথা বলার মুহুর্তের আগে ঘটে যাওয়া কিছু উল্লেখ করতে আমরা 'ইতিমধ্যে' ব্যবহার করি।

We use already to emphasize some unexpected or surprising situation.

আমরা কিছু অপ্রত্যাশিত বা আশ্চর্যজনক পরিস্থিতি জোর দিতে ইতিমধ্যে ব্যবহার.

Let’s look at some examples.

আসুন কিছু উদাহরণ দেখি।

The first sentence says,

প্রথম বাক্যটি বলে, 'জেনি ইতিমধ্যেই এখানে তাই আমরা শুরু করতে পারি।'

‘Jenny's already here so we can start.’

We didn't expect Jenny to be here but she is here.

আমরা জেনি এখানে আশা করিনি কিন্তু সে এখানে আছে।

So we want to emphasize that unexpected situation.

তাই আমরা সেই অপ্রত্যাশিত পরিস্থিতির ওপর জোর দিতে চাই।

The next sentence says,

পরের বাক্যটি বলে, 'আমরা সবেমাত্র রাতের খাবার শেষ করেছি কিন্তু আমরা ইতিমধ্যেই আবার ক্ষুধার্ত।'

‘We have just finished dinner but we're already hungry again.’

We didn't expect to be hungry again because we just had dinner.

আমরা আবার ক্ষুধার্ত হবে বলে আশা করিনি কারণ আমরা সবেমাত্র ডিনার করেছি।

But unexpectedly we are hungry again

কিন্তু অপ্রত্যাশিতভাবে আমরা আবার ক্ষুধার্ত

so we say, ‘we're already hungry again’.

তাই আমরা বলি, 'আমরা ইতিমধ্যেই আবার ক্ষুধার্ত'।

Now, I will talk about ‘yet’.

এখন, আমি 'এখনও' সম্পর্কে কথা বলব।

It is an adverb.

এটি একটি ক্রিয়াবিশেষণ।

It is used to ask if something has happened or occurred.

কিছু ঘটেছে বা ঘটেছে কিনা তা জিজ্ঞাসা করতে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

It can also be used to show that something has not happened

এটি দেখানোর জন্যও ব্যবহার করা যেতে পারে যে

at the moment of speaking.

It is usually placed at the end of a sentence.

। এটি সাধারণত একটি বাক্যের শেষে স্থাপন করা হয়।

Let’s look at some example sentences.

The first sentence says,

প্রথম বাক্যটি বলে,

‘She hasn't done her homework yet.’

'সে এখনও তার বাড়ির কাজ করেনি।'

The ‘yet’ at the end of this sentence

এই বাক্যের শেষে 'এখনও'

shows that at this moment, at this moment of speaking,

দেখায় যে এই মুহূর্তে, কথা বলার এই মুহুর্তে,

she hasn't completed this task.

তিনি এই কাজটি সম্পন্ন করেননি।

She hasn't done her homework.

সে তার হোমওয়ার্ক করেনি।

However, it also means that she will do it soon.

যাইহোক, এর অর্থ এই যে তিনি শীঘ্রই এটি করবেন।

The next sentence says,

পরের বাক্যটি বলে,

‘They haven't woken up yet.’

'তারা এখনও জাগেনি।'

Similarly, the ‘yet’ at the end of this sentence means at this time they're still sleeping.

একইভাবে, এই বাক্যের শেষে 'এখনও' মানে এই সময়ে তারা এখনও ঘুমাচ্ছে।

They haven't woken up yet.

তারা এখনো জাগেনি।

But they will wake up soon.

তবে তারা শীঘ্রই জেগে উঠবে।

Now, let's do a checkup.

In this conversation, there are two sentences.

এই কথোপকথনে, দুটি বাক্য আছে।

In the sentences, we need to use the words

বাক্যগুলিতে, আমাদের

‘still’, ‘already’, and ‘yet’.

Take a moment to think about where we use these words.

Let's look together.

‘A’ says, ‘We haven't finished lunch _blank_.’

In this case, we're trying to emphasize that at the moment of speaking,

and so we need to use the word ‘yet’.

The next part of a sentence says,

Here, we want to show that an action is continuing

so we should use ‘still’.

‘B’ expresses surprise.

‘Oh really? I’ve _blank_ finished my lunch.’

Which word can show surprise because of an unexpected situation?

কোন শব্দ একটি অপ্রত্যাশিত পরিস্থিতির কারণে চমক দেখাতে পারে?

The answer is ‘already’.

উত্তর 'ইতিমধ্যেই'।

‘Oh really? I’ve already finished my lunch.’

'ওহ সত্যিই? আমি ইতিমধ্যে আমার দুপুরের খাবার শেষ করেছি।'

Let's look at it all together.

এর সব একসাথে তাকান.

Again, ‘A’ says,

আবার, 'ক' বলে,

‘We haven't finished our lunch yet we're still eating.’

'আমরা আমাদের দুপুরের খাবার শেষ করিনি এখনো আমরা খাচ্ছি।'

And ‘B’ says,

এবং 'বি' বলে,

‘Oh really? I’ve already finished my lunch.’

'ওহ সত্যিই? আমি ইতিমধ্যে আমার দুপুরের খাবার শেষ করেছি।'

Now you know the difference between ‘still’, ‘already’, and ‘yet’.

However, this video is not enough to master these expressions.
