10 English Phrases for Unacceptable Behaviour

Did you know that “It’s not on” and “It’s  not on” have completely different meanings?

When we're really angry with someone,

Okay, so let's start with “Are you kidding me?”

Or when we don't want it to be true.

Next, “You’re out of order”  or “That’s out of order.”

This phrase means that someone's behavior or  words are unacceptable, offensive or upsetting.

ਇਸ ਵਾਕਾਂਸ਼ ਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਵਿਹਾਰ ਜਾਂ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਅਸਵੀਕਾਰਨਯੋਗ, ਅਪਮਾਨਜਨਕ ਜਾਂ ਪਰੇਸ਼ਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ।

“Look sis, I just wanted to borrow your  lipstick. I didn't ask you because you  

“ਦੇਖੋ ਭੈਣ ਜੀ, ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਲਿਪਸਟਿਕ ਉਧਾਰ ਲੈਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੁੱਛਿਆ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ

“You shouldn't ever go into someone's

ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਹੈਂਡਬੈਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ । ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ ਲਿਪਸਟਿਕ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ 'ਤੇ ਹਾਸੋਹੀਣੀ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ।''

“Hey, that's out of order... that’s just mean.”

"ਹੇ, ਇਹ ਆਰਡਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਹੈ ... ਇਸਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਇਹ ਹੈ."

A similar phrase is “You’re out of  line”or “You’re way out of line”

ਇੱਕ ਸਮਾਨ ਵਾਕੰਸ਼ ਹੈ "ਤੁਸੀਂ ਲਾਈਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਹੋ" ਜਾਂ "ਤੁਸੀਂ ਲਾਈਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਹੋ"

This means that your behavior is not appropriate.

ਇਸਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਵਿਵਹਾਰ ਉਚਿਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।

It's not what's expected.

ਇਹ ਉਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ਜਿਸਦੀ ਉਮੀਦ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ.

“My supervisor said that I  shouldn’t expect a promotion

“What do you think you are doing?”

"ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਕੀ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕੀ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ?"

When someone is doing something  that is surprising and unacceptable,  

ਜਦੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਕੰਮ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਹੈਰਾਨੀਜਨਕ ਅਤੇ ਅਸਵੀਕਾਰਨਯੋਗ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ

you can say, “What do you think you're doing?”

ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਹਿ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ, "ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਕੀ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕੀ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ?"

This is different to “What are you doing?”

Which is a genuine inquiry.

ਜੋ ਕਿ ਸੱਚੀ ਪੁੱਛਗਿੱਛ ਹੈ।

“Hey, what are you doing?”

"ਹੇ, ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕੀ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ?"

“I am doing my English homework.”

"ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਹੋਮਵਰਕ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ।"

“What do you think you are doing?” is used when  

"ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਕੀ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕੀ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ?" ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਉਦੋਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ

you can see exactly what they're  doing and you do not approve.

ਤੁਸੀਂ ਦੇਖ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਕੀ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਮਨਜ਼ੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ।

“Hey, what do you think you are doing?”

“Oh shoot.”

"ਓ ਸ਼ੂਟ।"

If you feel really annoyed by  someone's unacceptable behavior,  

ਜੇਕਰ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਅਸਵੀਕਾਰਨਯੋਗ ਵਿਵਹਾਰ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਚਮੁੱਚ ਨਾਰਾਜ਼ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋ,

then you can add emphasis to the  phrase by adding the word ‘on earth’.

ਤਾਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ 'ਧਰਤੀ ਉੱਤੇ' ਸ਼ਬਦ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਮੁਹਾਵਰੇ 'ਤੇ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਦੇ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ।

“What on earth do you think you are doing?”

"ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਕੀ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਧਰਤੀ ਉੱਤੇ ਕੀ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ?"

If someone is out of line?

ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਲਾਈਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਹੈ?

Like if your teenage daughter starts being  rude to you, then you could remind them of  

ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਜੇ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਅੱਲ੍ਹੜ ਧੀ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਨਾਲ ਰੁੱਖਾ ਹੋਣਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ

their place in the pecking order by  saying, “Who do you think you are?”

ਇਹ ਕਹਿ ਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਥਾਨ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਦਿਵਾ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ, "ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਕੀ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕੌਣ ਹੋ?"

It's a way of reminding them that this is not  an acceptable thing for them to say or do.

ਇਹ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਦਿਵਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਤਰੀਕਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਲਈ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਜਾਂ ਕਰਨਾ ਸਵੀਕਾਰਯੋਗ ਚੀਜ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।

“Ah, morning everyone.”

"ਆਹ, ਸਵੇਰ ਸਾਰੇ।"

“Jane, it's 9:45”

"ਜੇਨ, ਇਹ 9:45 ਹੈ"

“Yes, it is, and I am in  desperate need of a coffee,  

"ਹਾਂ, ਇਹ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਕੌਫੀ ਦੀ ਸਖ਼ਤ ਲੋੜ ਹੈ,

so if you don't mind grabbing me a  cappuccino while I check my emails.”

“I'm sorry?”

“Get me a coffee.”

"ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਕੌਫੀ ਲਿਆਓ।"

“Who do you think you are? I am  your superior, not the intern.”

"ਤੁਸੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਕੀ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਹੋ? ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਉੱਤਮ ਹਾਂ, ਇੰਟਰਨ ਨਹੀਂ। ”

Very similar to that phrase is “Who  do you think you're talking to?”

ਉਸ ਵਾਕਾਂਸ਼ ਨਾਲ ਬਹੁਤ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਜੁਲਦਾ ਹੈ "ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਕੀ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਗੱਲ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ?"

It's like you're asking them,  

ਇਹ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੁੱਛ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ,

“Do you think that you're better than me?  More senior, more experienced than me?”

"ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਸੋਚਦੇ ਹੋ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਬਿਹਤਰ ਹੋ? ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਸੀਨੀਅਰ, ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਤਜਰਬੇਕਾਰ?”

“Mom, I wanna see my mate. So you're  going to drive me to Danny's house and  

“ਮੰਮੀ, ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਥੀ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਡੈਨੀ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਲੈ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ ਅਤੇ

then you're going to give me 20  quid so I can go to the cinema.”

“Who do you think you're talking to?”

"ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਕੀ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਗੱਲ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ?"

One of my favorite phrases on  this list is “How dare you!”

ਇਸ ਸੂਚੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨਪਸੰਦ ਵਾਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ "ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਹਿੰਮਤ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਹੋਈ!"

This phrase has been around for a very long time,  

ਇਹ ਵਾਕੰਸ਼ ਬਹੁਤ ਲੰਬੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਤੋਂ ਚੱਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ,

and I'm sure you would find many examples  of it being used in black and white films.

“How dare you!” (slap)

"ਤੇਰੀ ਹਿਮਤ ਕਿੱਦਾਂ ਹੋਈ!" (ਥੱਪੜ)

But this phrase is not archaic.

ਪਰ ਇਹ ਵਾਕੰਸ਼ ਪੁਰਾਣੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।

We do use it in modern English, and it means “I  

ਅਸੀਂ ਇਸਨੂੰ ਆਧੁਨਿਕ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਰਤਦੇ ਹਾਂ, ਅਤੇ ਇਸਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ "ਮੈਂ

can't believe you were brave  enough to do such a thing.”

ਤੁਸੀਂ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਕਰਨ ਜਾਂ ਕਹਿਣ ਦੀ ਹਿੰਮਤ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਕੀਤੀ?

“Babe, we need more biscuits.”

"ਬੇਬੇ, ਸਾਨੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਬਿਸਕੁਟ ਚਾਹੀਦੇ ਹਨ।"

“No, there’s a tin full in the kitchen”

“ਨਹੀਂ, ਰਸੋਈ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਟੀਨ ਭਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ”

“Nope, I have eaten them all.”

“ਨਹੀਂ, ਮੈਂ ਉਹ ਸਭ ਖਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।”

“You’ve eaten them all, and  you didn’t save any for me?”

"ਤੁਸੀਂ ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਖਾ ਲਏ ਹਨ, ਅਤੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਚਾਇਆ?"

“Sorry.”

"ਮਾਫ਼ ਕਰਨਾ।"

“How dare you! They were my  special Birthday biscuits.”

"ਤੇਰੀ ਹਿਮਤ ਕਿੱਦਾਂ ਹੋਈ! ਉਹ ਮੇਰੇ ਜਨਮਦਿਨ ਦੇ ਖਾਸ ਬਿਸਕੁਟ ਸਨ।"

And similar to that phrase  is, “You’ve got a nerve.”

ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਵਾਕਾਂਸ਼ ਦੇ ਸਮਾਨ ਹੈ, "ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਨਸ ਮਿਲੀ ਹੈ."

Again, you are pointing out how brave someone  is to dare behave in such an unacceptable way.

ਦੁਬਾਰਾ ਫਿਰ, ਤੁਸੀਂ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਵੱਲ ਇਸ਼ਾਰਾ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ ਕਿ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਅਸਵੀਕਾਰਨਯੋਗ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਵਹਾਰ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਹਿੰਮਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

“Knock knock”

“ਨੌਕ ਨੌਕ”

“Danielle?”

“ਡੈਨੀਏਲ?”

“Hi, can we talk?”

"ਹੈਲੋ, ਕੀ ਅਸੀਂ ਗੱਲ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ?"

“You’ve got a nerve coming  in here after what you did.”

"ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਗਏ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਇੱਥੇ ਇੱਕ ਨਸ ਆ ਗਈ ਹੈ."
