Let’s take a closer look at the differences and

similarities between the  IELTS and Cambridge exams.

Firstly, and the most important thing you should  know is that the IELTS exam is the same test

for all candidates. So you take the exam and  IELTS tells you what level you are. Whereas,

with the Cambridge exams, there are different  tests for each level. These levels go from A2 Key

Secondly, the IELTS exam expires after two  years so you may need to take the IELTS exam

for visa requirements, for example. The Cambridge  exams don’t expire, so they are valid for life.

Thirdly, there are two versions of the IELTS exam  - General Training and Academic Training. The

Speaking and Listening papers are the same for all  candidates but the Writing and Reading papers are

If you need the exam to get into university, you  probably need the Academic version but if you need

to for a visa requirement, you’ll probably need  the General version. With the Cambridge exams,

there’s just one version of each exam  for each level. Everyone answers the

same kinds of questions with the same kinds  of texts. There is one small thing to mention  

ਇੱਕੋ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੇ ਪਾਠਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਇੱਕੋ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੇ ਸਵਾਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਜਵਾਬ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇੱਥੇ ਇੱਕ ਛੋਟੀ ਜਿਹੀ ਗੱਲ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਿਕਰ ਕਰਨਾ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ ਹੈ

here - three exams - the A2 Key, B1 Preliminary  and B2 First have a ‘for schools’ exam with  

- ਤਿੰਨ ਪ੍ਰੀਖਿਆਵਾਂ - A2 Key, B1 ਪ੍ਰੀਲਿਮਿਨਰੀ ਅਤੇ B2 ਫਸਟ ਵਿੱਚ 'ਸਕੂਲਾਂ ਲਈ' ਇਮਤਿਹਾਨ ਅਜਿਹੇ

topics that are appropriate for younger  people. But the same things are tested!

ਵਿਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਨੌਜਵਾਨਾਂ ਲਈ ਢੁਕਵੇਂ ਹਨ। ਪਰ ਉਹੀ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਪਰਖੀਆਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ!

Fourth, you can’t fail the IELTS exam. You just  get a score and that gives you your level. People  

ਚੌਥਾ, ਤੁਸੀਂ IELTS ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਖਿਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਫੇਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੇ। ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇੱਕ ਸਕੋਰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਪੱਧਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਲੋਕ

say they failed the exam but they mean they didn’t  get the score they needed. You can fail Cambridge  

ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰੀਖਿਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਫੇਲ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਪਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲੋੜੀਂਦੇ ਅੰਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲੇ। ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕੈਮਬ੍ਰਿਜ

exams. On the bright side, if you get a grade A,  you get a higher level on your certificate. So,  

ਪ੍ਰੀਖਿਆਵਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਫੇਲ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ। ਚਮਕਦਾਰ ਪਾਸੇ, ਜੇਕਰ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਇੱਕ ਗ੍ਰੇਡ ਏ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋ, ਤਾਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰਟੀਫਿਕੇਟ 'ਤੇ ਉੱਚ ਪੱਧਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋ। ਇਸ ਲਈ,

if you take the B2 First exam and get more than  one hundred and eighty points, your certificate  

ਜੇਕਰ ਤੁਸੀਂ B2 ਫਸਟ ਇਮਤਿਹਾਨ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹੋ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਸੌ ਅੱਸੀ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਅੰਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋ, ਤਾਂ ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਸਰਟੀਫਿਕੇਟ

will say your level is C1. This is true for  all the exams from A2 Key to C1 Advanced.

Fifth, on the IELTS exam, there is no specific  part that tests your grammar but your grammar is  

ਪੰਜਵਾਂ, IELTS ਇਮਤਿਹਾਨ 'ਤੇ, ਕੋਈ ਖਾਸ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਜੋ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਵਿਆਕਰਣ ਦੀ ਪਰਖ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਵਿਆਕਰਣ ਦੀ

tested! There’s just no dedicated section. If,  in the listening paper you write a word in the  

ਜਾਂਚ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ! ਇੱਥੇ ਕੋਈ ਸਮਰਪਿਤ ਭਾਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ। ਜੇਕਰ, ਸੁਣਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਪੇਪਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਬਹੁਵਚਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੋਈ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਲਿਖਦੇ ਹੋ

plural, like informations but the answer  should be the uncountable, information,  

, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ, ਪਰ ਜਵਾਬ ਅਣਗਿਣਤ, ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਹੋਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ,

then it’s marked as wrong. You don’t get  any points for knowing the answer if the  

ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਗਲਤ ਵਜੋਂ ਮਾਰਕ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ। ਜੇਕਰ ਵਿਆਕਰਣ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਕੀਤੀ ਥਾਂ 'ਤੇ ਫਿੱਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਬੈਠਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ

grammar doesn’t fit the space provided. What a  shame! However, on the Cambridge exam there is  

ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਜਵਾਬ ਜਾਣਨ ਲਈ ਕੋਈ ਅੰਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੇ । ਕਿੰਨੀ ਸ਼ਰਮ! ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ, ਕੈਮਬ੍ਰਿਜ ਇਮਤਿਹਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ

a specific part that tests your knowledge  of grammar and vocabulary on the B2 First,  

ਇੱਕ ਖਾਸ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ B2 ਫਸਟ,

C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency, there is a  section at the end of the Reading paper called  

C1 ਐਡਵਾਂਸਡ ਅਤੇ C2 ਮੁਹਾਰਤ 'ਤੇ ਵਿਆਕਰਣ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਵਲੀ ਦੇ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਦੀ ਜਾਂਚ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਰੀਡਿੰਗ ਪੇਪਰ ਦੇ ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ

‘Use of English’. This has exercises designed  to test very specific language like verb tenses,  

'ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ' ਨਾਮਕ ਇੱਕ ਭਾਗ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਖਾਸ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦੀ ਜਾਂਚ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਤਿਆਰ ਕੀਤੇ ਗਏ ਅਭਿਆਸ ਹਨ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਆ ਕਾਲ,

collocations, idioms and verb  patterns, to name just a few.

ਮੁਹਾਵਰੇ, ਮੁਹਾਵਰੇ ਅਤੇ ਕ੍ਰਿਆ ਪੈਟਰਨ, ਕੁਝ ਹੀ ਨਾਮ ਦੇਣ ਲਈ।

There are four papers on the IELTS exam -  Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. You take  

ਆਈਲੈਟਸ ਇਮਤਿਹਾਨ ਦੇ ਚਾਰ ਪੇਪਰ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ- ਲਿਸਨਿੰਗ, ਰੀਡਿੰਗ, ਰਾਈਟਿੰਗ ਅਤੇ ਸਪੀਕਿੰਗ। ਤੁਸੀਂ

them in that order on the test day, so Listening,  Reading, Writing, then Speaking. On the Cambridge

A2 Key exam there are just three papers, Reading  and Writing together as one, and Listening and  

A2 ਕੁੰਜੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਖਿਆ 'ਤੇ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਤਿੰਨ ਪੇਪਰ ਹਨ, ਪੜ੍ਹਨਾ ਅਤੇ ਲਿਖਣਾ, ਅਤੇ ਸੁਣਨਾ ਅਤੇ

Speaking. On the B1 Preliminary exam and up to C2  Proficiency, all exams have four papers - Reading,

Speaking of the speaking exam, for the IELTS, it’s  just you and an examiner having a conversation in

a room. For all the Cambridge exams, there  are two candidates and two examiners - one

There’s a difference in the time the  examinations take. The IELTS exam is about two

Remember, when trying to decide which test is  best for you, you should think about why you

please check what exams your  university accepts. Similarly,  

ਤਾਂ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਜਾਂਚ ਕਰੋ ਕਿ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਕਿਹੜੀਆਂ ਪ੍ਰੀਖਿਆਵਾਂ ਸਵੀਕਾਰ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ,

if your employer has asked you to take an  official exam, check with them what they take.
