Let’s take a closer look at the differences and
5
33540
3180
00:36
similarities between the  IELTS and Cambridge exams.
6
36720
4320
00:41
Firstly, and the most important thing you should  know is that the IELTS exam is the same test
7
41040
6420
00:47
for all candidates. So you take the exam and  IELTS tells you what level you are. Whereas,
8
47460
7560
00:55
with the Cambridge exams, there are different  tests for each level. These levels go from A2 Key
9
55020
9300
01:04
to C2 Proficiency. So you need to know which level  you are before you start to prepare for the exam.
10
64320
7500
01:11
Secondly, the IELTS exam expires after two  years so you may need to take the IELTS exam
11
71820
6000
01:17
more than once in your life, if you need it for  university entry and then a few years later,
12
77820
6000
01:23
for visa requirements, for example. The Cambridge  exams don’t expire, so they are valid for life.
13
83820
6900
01:30
Thirdly, there are two versions of the IELTS exam  - General Training and Academic Training. The
14
90720
7500
01:38
Speaking and Listening papers are the same for all  candidates but the Writing and Reading papers are
15
98220
6540
01:44
different for the General and Academic versions.  The General version concentrates on more every day
16
104760
6240
01:51
types of contexts and text types and the Academic  one is, well…more academic. The number of correct
17
111000
8040
01:59
answers you need for different band scores is  different for the Reading paper too. Take a look
18
119040
5400
02:04
on the screen to see what I mean. The one that’s  best for you depends on why you need the exam.
19
124440
5820
02:10
If you need the exam to get into university, you  probably need the Academic version but if you need
20
130260
5520
02:15
to for a visa requirement, you’ll probably need  the General version. With the Cambridge exams,
21
135780
6840
02:22
there’s just one version of each exam  for each level. Everyone answers the
22
142620
5640
02:28
same kinds of questions with the same kinds  of texts. There is one small thing to mention
23
148260
5820
02:34
here - three exams - the A2 Key, B1 Preliminary  and B2 First have a ‘for schools’ exam with
24
154080
11160
02:45
topics that are appropriate for younger  people. But the same things are tested!
25
165240
5160
02:51
Fourth, you can’t fail the IELTS exam. You just  get a score and that gives you your level. People
26
171060
8700
02:59
say they failed the exam but they mean they didn’t  get the score they needed. You can fail Cambridge
27
179760
7260
03:07
exams. On the bright side, if you get a grade A,  you get a higher level on your certificate. So,
28
187020
6780
03:13
if you take the B2 First exam and get more than  one hundred and eighty points, your certificate
29
193800
6720
03:20
will say your level is C1. This is true for  all the exams from A2 Key to C1 Advanced.
30
200520
7260
03:29
Fifth, on the IELTS exam, there is no specific  part that tests your grammar but your grammar is
31
209040
8160
03:37
tested! There’s just no dedicated section. If,  in the listening paper you write a word in the
32
217200
6180
03:43
plural, like informations but the answer  should be the uncountable, information,
33
223380
5160
03:48
then it’s marked as wrong. You don’t get  any points for knowing the answer if the
34
228540
5040
03:53
grammar doesn’t fit the space provided. What a  shame! However, on the Cambridge exam there is
35
233580
4620
03:58
a specific part that tests your knowledge  of grammar and vocabulary on the B2 First,
36
238200
5040
04:03
C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency, there is a  section at the end of the Reading paper called
37
243240
6060
04:09
‘Use of English’. This has exercises designed  to test very specific language like verb tenses,
38
249300
7740
04:17
collocations, idioms and verb  patterns, to name just a few.
39
257040
5220
04:22
There are four papers on the IELTS exam -  Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. You take
40
262260
6780
04:29
them in that order on the test day, so Listening,  Reading, Writing, then Speaking. On the Cambridge
41
269040
6960
04:36
A2 Key exam there are just three papers, Reading  and Writing together as one, and Listening and
42
276000
7020
04:43
Speaking. On the B1 Preliminary exam and up to C2  Proficiency, all exams have four papers - Reading,
43
283020
8280
04:51
Writing, Listening and Speaking and they are  taken in that order, except for the speaking.
44
291300
6540
04:57
Speaking of the speaking exam, for the IELTS, it’s  just you and an examiner having a conversation in
45
297840
7260
05:05
a room. For all the Cambridge exams, there  are two candidates and two examiners - one
46
305100
5340
05:10
who speaks to you and the other who just  listens. For both IELTS and Cambridge,
47
310440
6000
05:16
the Speaking paper can be on the same day as the  other papers or up to seven days before or after.
48
316440
6300
05:22
There’s a difference in the time the  examinations take. The IELTS exam is about two
49
322740
5460
05:28
hours and forty-five minutes in total, while the  Cambridge exams can take up to four hours. They
50
328200
6720
05:34
start at two hours for the A2 Key and each  higher level test takes more and more time.
51
334920
5820
05:40
And that’s a brief outline of the main  differences and similarities between the
52

IELTS and Cambridge exams. If you want to  know about test questions in more detail,

Remember, when trying to decide which test is  best for you, you should think about why you
55
357900
5820
06:03
need an official English qualification. If you  need the exam to go to a specific university,
56
363720
4800
06:08
please check what exams your  university accepts. Similarly,
57
368520
5100
06:13
if your employer has asked you to take an  official exam, check with them what they take.
