THEN or THAN... What's the difference?

THEN أم THAN ... ما هو الفرق؟

There are tons of words in the English language

هناك اطنان من الكلمات في اللغة الإنجليزية

that are similar

التي تبدو متشابهة

but not the same

و لكن ليس لها نفس المعنى

and I've been creating a whole lot of lessons

To start this lesson,

I want to make something really clear.

Than and then are not the same words

Than , Then ليستا الكلمة نفسها

even though they look similar and they sound

حتى وإن بدتا أنهما تشبهان بعضا شكلا وصوتا

quite similar, they have different meanings and uses.

فهما تحملان معنى واستخدامات مختلفة.

And I have to admit that these two words

وأود الاعتراف بأن هاتين الكلمتان

had me fooled for a long time at school.

قد قامتا بخداعي لفترة طويلة في المدرسة

Through school, I was forever using the wrong word

خلال أيام الدراسة، كنت دائما استخدم الكلمة الخطأ

and I was getting marked incorrect by my teachers

و كانت المعلمة تعطيني علامه خطأ

all the time. It took years for me to remember.

دائمآ، قد تطلب مني سنوات للتذكر

And part of the problem is that these words sound

وجزء من المشكلة أن صوت هاتين الكلمتين

quite similar. They both use the voiced th sound.

متشابه جدا. إنهما تستعملان صوت الحرفين th. ذ... ذ...

And we can hear a little difference in the vowel sound

و نستطيع أن نسمع قليلا الاختلاف في الحرف المتحرك

when these words are stressed in a sentence

عندما يتم التأكيد على هاتين الكلمتين في الجملة

and sometimes they are.

وأحيانا هما كذلك

The vowel sound.

And

But actually,

ولكن الحقيقة

most of the time, these words are unstressed

في كثير من الاوقات، هاتان الكلمتان غير مؤكدتان

and then

they sound really similar because both of those

vowels sounds reduce down to the schwa sound.

أن الحرفان المتحركان يتم تخفيضهما إلى صوت

So it sounds like

Then we can't hear any difference at all.

ف لا نستطيع ان نسمع الفرق إطلاقا

Now the closest that I ever came to a rule for this was

الآن اقتربت أكثر ما يكون لقاعدة لهما عندما

than with an A is used for comparisons

حيث than مع حرف العلة a تستخدم للمقارنة

and then with an E is used for time.

و then (ثم) مع ال E تستخدم للوقت.

It helped me a little in the end so if you find it helpful

قد ساعدتني قليلا في النهاية لذا إن وجدتموها مساعدة

to try and remember that rule,

حاول تذكر تلك القاعدة

especially to use those words correctly in sentences,

خاصة لاستخدام هاتين الكلمتين جيدا في جمل

then go ahead.

إذا امض قدماً

Now let's go a little deeper and I think we'll start with

الان فلنذهب أعمق وأعتقد أننا سنبدأ مع

than because there's only one basic definition

الـ than لأنها تحتوي علي تعريف واحد اساسي

and use for than.

واستخدام واحد لـ than

So than is a conjunction and we use it to make

لذا فـ than أداة ربط ونستخدمها لعمل

comparisons.

مقارنات

So when we're highlighting the difference between

لذا فعندما نسلط الضوء علي الفرق بين

two separate things.

شيئين متفرقان

أنا أطول من أختي.

لدى هاتفك إشارة أفضل من هاتفي

هل تظن أن الباستا تشعرك بالشبع أكثر من السلطة؟

Notice that than is usually used with an adjective.

لاحظوا ان than غالبا تستخدم مع الصفة

It's used to say that something is more or less

تستخدم لقول أن شيئا أكثر أو أقل

than something else.

من شيء آخر

أطول من... أفضل من .... يشعرك بالامتلاء أكثر من...

Right?

أليس كذلك؟

Now another common comparison phrase

عبارة شائعة أخرى للمقارنة

also uses than and that's rather than.

وتستخدم أيضا than وهي rather than

أفضل الركوب على المشي.

أفضل عدم الذهاب على ارتداء ذلك الثوب.

Rather is just another type of comparison.

إن Rather هي فقط نوع اخر من المقارنات

It's like saying

هي مثل قول

I prefer to do one thing more than the other.

أفضل عمل شيء ما على شيء آخر

And with rather, you'll often see than.

و مع rather فسترى غالبا than

Now finally, you'll also hear than used in

وأخيرا، سوف تسمع than مستخدمة في

quite a few fixed expressions and common phrases.

في عدد قليل من المصطلحات والعبارات الشائعة.

انت تصل متأخرا خير من أن لا تصل أبدا

So did you hear in all of those fixed expressions how

than was pronounced? It was reduced, it was short

and low in pitch. It's an unstressed word.

ومنخفضة الإيقاع. لا يتم وضع النبرة عليها

Right? So I want you to practise them out loud with me.

Now of course, all of these phrases are used to make

بالتأكيد إن جميع هذه العبارات تستخدم لعمل

comparisons too.

Now we're going to take a really, really quick break here

and while the ad is playing, I want you to write

a sentence in the comments using than.

Okay? In this context

اتفقنا؟ في هذا السياق

in this structure.

في هذه القاعدة

So remember, you need to use a comparative adjective.

لذا تذكروا عليكم باستخدام صفات مقارنة

Then I'll be back to explain how to use then.

ثم سأعود لشرح كيف نستخدم then.

Then can be a little more complicated

يمكن لـ then أن تكون أكثر تعقيدا

than than

من than

because there are a few different ways

بسبب وجود بضع طرق مختلفة

that you can use it.

يمكنك استخدامها.

Then can be an adverb or an adjective

يمكن لـ then أن تكون حالا أو صفة

but you'll most commonly see it used as an adverb.

لكن الاستخدام الأكثر شيوعا هو كحال.

Now remember that adverbs modify verbs, adjectives

تذكروا أن الأحوال تصف الأفعال، الصفات

or other adverbs.

أو الأحوال الأخرى

And at the start of this lesson, I said that then

وفي بداية هذا الدرس، قلت ان then

is used with time expressions right?

تستخدم مع التعبيرات الزمنية، أليس كذلك؟

So with time, you're using then as an adverb.

لذا مع الزمن، انتم تستخدمون then كحال

And it can mean something like

كما تعني شيئا مثل

next in order or next in time or in place

التالي في الترتيب، او القادم في الزمن، أو في المكان

but it can also mean soon afterwards.

لكنها يمكن أن تعني أيضا بعد وقت قصير.

أنهى عمله ثم ذهب للقاء بعض أصدقائه.

So the action of finishing work came first

لذا فإن فعل الانتهاء من العمل جاء أولا

and next he went to meet his friends.

ومن ثم ذهب للقاء أصدقائه

So we're talking about the order of things.

لذا فإننا نتحدث عن ترتيب الأشياء.

كنت في بداية الطابور، ثم ساره ثم تشارلي.

Now Sarah and Charlie were in the line,

لذا فإن سارة وتشارلي كانا في الطابور،

they were the next people in the order of the line.

كانوا تاليا في الترتيب في الطابور

I was first, Sarah was second and Charlie was third.

كنت الأولى، سارة ثانيا ثم تشارلي ثالثا.

Then could also mean at the specific time as well.

يمكن لـ then أيضا أن تعني في وقت معين أيضا.

لا أستطيع اللقاء غدا صباحا. سأكون في العمل حينها.

So at that time that we're talking about

لذا في ذلك الوقت الذي نتحدث عنه

I'll be at work.

سأكون في العمل

لم يكن لدينا هواتف متنقلة حينها

So at that time in the past, back

لذا في الوقت في الماضي

at that moment in time that we're talking about

في تلك اللحظة من الزمن التي كنا نتحدث عنها

mobile phones didn't exist.

لم تكن الهواتف المتنقلة قد وجدت.

So yes, then is used with time expressions

لذا أجل فـ then تستخدم مع التعبيرات الزمنية

but we also use it in other ways as well.

لكننا نستخدمها بطرق أخرى أيضا.

It can mean in addition or besides

فقد تعني إضافة إلى

and as a result

أو كنتيجة لـ

or in that case.

أو في تلك الحالة.

So as a result of not paying my bill,

لذا وكنتيجة لعدم دفعي الفواتير،

I'll get charged a fee. So in the case

سيقومون بتغريمي. لذا في تلك الحال

that I don't pay my bill, I'll get charged a fee.

عندما لا أدفع فواتيري، سيتم تغريمي.

So this is in addition to registering the business

لذا فهذه إضافة إلى التسجيل في الأعمال

you need to get a permit to operate.

ستحتاج إلى إذن لإدارة العمل.

Okay?

حسنا؟

Now I mentioned that then is used as an adjective too.

حسنا، لقد ذكرت أن then تستخدم كصفة أيضا.

Now this use is a little less common but you'll still see it

حسنا إن هذا الاستخدام أقل شيوعاً لكنكم لا تزالون ترونه

quite often and I wanted to include it today

إلى حد ما ولذلك أريد الإشارة إليه اليوم

so that you can completely understand the uses of then.

Then as an adjective describes something as

إن then كصفة تستخدم في وصف شيء

being that

or existing at that time.

So I'm describing the person who was my roommate

at that time, she's not my roommate now.

Okay she was my roommate at a time in the past.

كانت رفيقتي في الحجرة في ذلك الوقت من الماضي.

So it's your turn now. Can you think of a sentence

where you can use then as an adjective?

But remember that we're always referring to something

that is different from the present.

You can't say

لا يمكنكم أن تقولوا...

Right? Because he's still your brother now.

أليس كذلك؟ لأنه لا يزال أخاً لك الآن.

Now that's not going to change.

وهذا لن يتغير الآن.

So it has to be a situation that was different in the past.

لذا يجب أن يكون موقفاً مختلفاً في الماضي.

It's not like that now.

ولا يشبه الوقت الحالي.

Now just like than, there are some common phrases

وكما هو الحال مع than، هنالك عبارات شائعة

or fixed expressions that use then okay?

أو تعبيرات ثابتة تستخدم then

تناول الطعام في الخارج بين الفينة والأخرى ليس مكلفاً جداً

اتصلت لأحجز تذكرة في ذلك التو والحين

So have you heard any of those phrases before?

I want you to practise saying them

out loud with me now. Ready?

Did you hear how in most of those expressions then

is stressed? Said much more strongly than than

and the other fixed expressions.

Such tiny little insignificant words

يا لها من كلمات صغيرة غير هامة

but using them accurately

لكنها استخدامها بدقة

and this is especially important if you're taking IELTS

وهذا مهم خاصة إن كنت ستتقدم لاختبار آيلتس (IELTS)

or TOEFL exams because these areas or these mistakes

وتوفل (TOEFL) لأن هذه مناطق أو هذه الأخطاء

become really obvious during your written exams, right?

تكون واضحة جداً في الاختبارات الكتابية، أليس كذلك؟

Everyday language when you're speaking with people,

عندما تتكلم مع الناس في الكلام اليومي،

no one's really going to know

لن يعلم أحد حقاً

if you're using the wrong word

but it all comes out in your writing and if you need some

extra help with confusing words like this

then practising with a native teacher

can be really helpful because they're going notice

all of the little things that you can do to help improve

Well if you guessed then, you're absolutely right

because we're talking about the order

Now this is another situation showing the order

of things happening in time.

Did you guess than?

We're comparing the heat

إننا نقارن الحرارة

to the heat inside an oven so it's really hot, right?

So here, we're missing an adjective, right?

لذا إننا هنا نفتقد الصفة، أليس كذلك؟

An adjective to describe the noun boss.

صفة لوصف الاسم "الرئيس".

So we need to use then as an adjective, right?

لذا نحتاج إلى استخدام then كصفة، أليس كذلك؟

At the time she was working, he was her boss.

في الوقت الذي كانت تعمل فيه، كان رئيسها في العمل.

He was her then boss.

كان رئيسها في ذلك الحين.

Easy one. It's a comparison right? So it has to be than.

سؤال سهل. إنها مقارنة، أليس كذلك؟ لذا يجب أن تكون than.

As a result of the fact that we're trying to save money.

كنتيجة لحقيقة أنك تحاول توفير المال.

In that case,

في تلك الحال،

well it's a good idea to eat at home, right?

So we use then.
