I want to try and persuade you

that there are reasons why we should be optimistic in general.

And that’s a very difficult thing to do today

because we are confronting tremendous problems in this world.

Things like global climate change,

which seem almost impossible to solve,

The scale of these problems though

is even more reason why we should be optimistic.

Because what we know is that in the past,

every great and difficult thing that has been accomplished,

Think of the first airplanes.

It’s hard enough

to create something good and great deliberately and with intention.

And it’s no guarantee,

just because we believe something will happen that it will happen,

but we do know that unless we believe that something can happen,

it’s not going to happen inadvertently by itself.

And so it becomes really important

that we imagine a world that we want,

So our own history has been basically shaped by optimists,

and if we want to shape the future,

That world that we’re shaping is not a world that’s perfect.

It’s not perfection,

there’s no lack of problems,

there’s no absence of bad things.

It is totally not utopia.

It’s what I would call pro-topia:

ဒါကို pro-topia လို့ ခေါ်မယ့် အရာပါ။

a world in which things are a little bit better.

အရာတွေ နည်းနည်း ပိုကောင်းတဲ့ ကမ္ဘာတစ်ခုပေါ့။

And that sense of optimism is a perspective

where we expect the world to yield a little bit more good than bad,

to have a few more reasons to hope than to fear.

And optimism definitely is not just a sunny temperament,

a kind of a blindness to the realities of the world's problems

or some kind of Pollyanna self-delusion.

Instead, optimism is based on the fact of historical progress,

that if we transcend anecdote

and look at data in a scientific, rational way,

If it’s real then why don’t we see more of it?

Why are so many people pessimistic?

And I think there are three reasons why.

One is that most of what progress is about is about what does not happen.

It’s about all the things that could have happened that didn’t happen today.

It’s about the two-year-old child who did not die of smallpox.

It’s about the family farmers

They don't make the headlines.

And the second reason is that bad things happen faster than good things.

Good things take time.

When we are compressing our news cycle to the last five minutes

and the next five minutes,

If we were to make newspapers and websites

we’d have a very different set of headlines.

The third reason is that because societies that are capable of creating

just a few percent more good than they destroy every year,

if you have a society that’s capable

So we don’t see it

unless we turn around and look back into the past.

So it’s possible that after 500 years of progress,

it could stop tomorrow.

But it’s unlikely

and very, very probable that that long-term trend will continue,

at least for the rest of your lives.

So this optimism makes us realists

in aligning ourselves with this long history

of historical progress.

And that’s the first reason we should be optimistic.

ဒါက ကျွန်တော်တို့ အကောင်းမြင်သင့်တဲ့ ပထမဆုံး အကြောင်းရင်းပါ။

And the second reason is that civilization is a mechanism

ဒုတိယအကြောင်းရင်း၊ လူမှုတိုးတက်မှုက တခြားသူတွေကို အကောင်းမြင် ယုံကြည်တဲ့

to make these improvements

အချက်အပေါ် မူတည်တဲ့

that relies on the fact that we’re optimistically trusting others.

We have total strangers that we can collaborate,

and that collaboration allows us to make things beyond ourselves

that are bigger than just what we can do.

That requires trust,

and trust is a type of optimism.

But in addition to kind of cooperating

with the eight billion total strangers on this planet accomplishing great things,

we can also trust future generations.

Right now, today, we are benefiting from the work of previous generations

who undergone to create infrastructure --

roads canals, skyscrapers, telephone networks --

ဖန်တီးဖို့ ကြုံတွေ့ခဲ့ရတဲ့ အရင် မျိုးဆက်တွေရဲ့ အလုပ်ကနေ

that we are now enjoying.

လက်ရှိ ကျွန်တော်တို့ အကျိုးခံစားနေရတာပါ။

In fact, we may be enjoying more benefits than they have back in the past

အမှန်တော့ ကျွန်တော်တို့ဟာ အတိတ်က သူတို့ စတင်ခဲ့တုန်းကထက် အကျိုးကျေးဇူးတွေကို

when they began.

ပိုခံစားနေရနိုင်တယ်။

So they have been acting as good ancestors for us,

and sometimes even sacrificing

is an act of optimism.

One, because we believe that there will be future generations,

and two, because we are willing to sacrifice immediate gains

in order to postpone --

have more gains into the future --

that investment.

Being a good ancestor enables us to actually accomplish things

not just beyond what we can do individually in the present,

but what we can do over time.

So when we trust the future,

one of the things that we are understanding

is that future generations not only have better living standards

because of progress,

but they also have more capability to solve problems

because there’s more knowledge

and because they have better tools.

And so we can trust that.

ဒီတော့ ဒါကို ယုံကြည်နိုင်ပါတယ်။

We can trust the fact that in the future,

အနာဂတ်မှာ အနာဂတ်လူမျိုးဆက်တွေဟာ ကျွန်တော်တို့

future generations will be able to solve problems

မဖြေရှင်းနိုင်တဲ့ပြဿနာတွေကို ဖြေရှင်းနိုင်မယ်ဆိုတာကို

that we cannot solve ourselves.

So that means that we should be optimistic

not because we believe that our problems are smaller than we thought.

မယုံကြည်တဲ့အတွက် အကောင်းမြင်သင့်တယ်လို့ဆိုလိုတာပါ။

We should be optimistic because we believe

ပြဿနာတွေကို ဖြေရှင်းနိုင်စွမ်းက ကျွန်တော်တို့

that our capacity to solve problems is greater than we thought.

ထင်တာထက် ပိုများတယ်လို့ ယုံကြည်တဲ့အတွက် အကောင်းမြင်သင့်ပါတယ်။

So that’s a second reason to be optimistic.

ဒီတော့ ဒါက အကောင်းမြင်ဖို့ ဒုတိယအကြောင်းရင်းပါ။

The third one has to do with problems

တတိယက အခွင့်အလမ်းတွေအဖြစ်

which are really disguised as opportunities.

OK, so optimists don’t shun problems.

အကောင်းမြင်သမားတွေက ပြဿနာတွေကို မရှောင်ရှားပါဘူး။

Optimism is about embracing problems,

အကောင်းမြင်ဝါဒက ပြဿနာတွေကို လက်ခံတာနဲ့ ပတ်သက်ပါတယ်။

because it’s problems that make solutions

ဘာလို့လဲဆိုတော့ ဖြေရှင်းချက်တွေကို ဖန်တီးတာက ပြဿနာတွေဖြစ်ပြီး

and solutions that make problems.

ပြဿနာတွေကို ဖန်တီးတာက ဖြေရှင်းချက်တွေပါ။

So I believe that most of the problems we have today

ဒီနေ့ ကျွန်တော်တို့မှာရှိတဲ့ ပြဿနာ အများစုဟာ အတိတ်ရဲ့ ဖြေရှင်းနည်းတွေကြောင့်

are generated by the solutions of the past.

ဖြစ်ပေါ်လာတယ်လို့ ကျွန်တော် ယုံကြည်ပါတယ်။

And the great one is this climate change.

ကြီးမားတဲ့ တစ်ခုက ရာသီဥတု ပြောင်းလဲမှုပါ။

The solution in the past was artificial power --

အတိတ်က ဖြေရှင်းချက်က စွမ်းအင်တုဖြစ်ခဲ့တယ်၊

“Where do we get it?”

“ ဘယ်က ရတာလဲ “။

“OK, here it is.”

“ကောင်းပြီ၊ ဒီမှာပါ။”

But now it makes the problem now.

ဒါပေမဲ့ ဒါက ပြဿနာကို ဖန်တီးတယ်။

That means that today,

ဒီနေ့ ကျွန်တော်တို့မှာ

most of the solutions that we have

ရှိတဲ့ ဖြေရှင်းနည်းအများစုဟာ အနာဂတ်

will be generating the problems of the future.

ပြဿနာတွေကို ဖြစ်ပေါ်စေမယ်လို့ ဆိုလိုတာပါ။

And there will be more problems

ဖြေရှင်းနည်းအသစ်တွေက

because new solutions create many more problems.

နောက်ထပ် ပြဿနာများစွာ ဖြစ်စေတာကြောင့် ပြဿနာတွေ ပိုများလာမှာပါ။

In the same way, when science answers a question,

အလားတူ သိပ္ပံပညာက မေးခွန်း တစ်ခုကို ဖြေပေးတဲ့အခါ

that answer will generate two or three new questions --

ဒီအဖြေသည် မေးခွန်းသစ် နှစ်ခု၊ သုံးခုကို ဖြစ်ပေါ်စေမယ်၊

things that we didn’t even know we didn’t know.

ကျွန်တော်တို့ မသိဘူးလို့ မသိတာတွေတောင်ပါ။

And so, in a peculiar way,

ဒီတော့ တစ်မူထူးတဲ့ နည်းနဲ့

science is expanding our ignorance faster than our knowledge.

သိပ္ပံပညာက အသိပညာထက် မသိမှုကို ပိုမြန်မြန် တိုးချဲ့ပေးနေတယ်။

So we have an unlimited pool of questions and problems.

ဒါကြောင့် ကျွန်တော်တို့မှာ အကန့်အသတ်မဲ့ မေးခွန်းတွေနဲ့ ပြဿနာစုတွေ ရှိနေတယ်။

But problems don’t impede progress.

ဒါပေမဲ့ ပြဿနာတွေက တိုးတက်မှုကို အဟန့်အတားမဖြစ်စေပါဘူး။

Problems are the conduit of progress.

ပြဿနာတွေက တိုးတက်မှု လမ်းကြောင်းပါ။

No problems, no progress.

ပြဿနာမရှိရင် တိုးတက်မှုမရှိဘူး။

That is why I reject utopia,

ဒါကြောင့် အဲဒီမှာ ပြဿနာမရှိတဲ့အတွက်

because there are no problems there.

ယူတိုးပီးယားကို ကျွန်တော် ငြင်းပယ်တာပါ။

So even bad things that happen are basically possibilities

ဒါကြောင့် ဖြစ်နေတဲ့ မကောင်းတာတွေတောင် အခြေခံအနေနဲ့ တော့ ဖြေရှင်းနည်းအသစ်တွေနဲ့

that yield new solutions and better opportunities.

ပိုကောင်းတဲ့ အခွင့်အလမ်းတွေ ရရှိစေနိုင်တဲ့ ဖြစ်နိုင်ခြေတွေပါပဲ။

So in that way, problems are unlimited.

ဒီတော့ ဒီနည်းအရ ပြဿနာတွေက အကန့်အသတ်မဲ့ပါ။

There is no limit for improvement.

တိုးတက်မှုအတွက် ကန့်သတ်ချက်မရှိပါ။

So we can improve ourselves in all directions.

ဦးတည်ရာတိုင်းမှာ ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကိုယ် တိုးတက်အောင် လုပ်နိုင်ပါတယ်။

So we have a choice about optimism.

အကောင်းမြင်ဝါဒနဲ့ပတ်သက်ပြီး ရွေးချယ်စရာတစ်ခု ရှိပါတယ်။

It’s not a temperament.

ဒါက ပင်ကိုစရိုက်မဟုတ်ဘူး။

No matter what your temperament is you can still choose to be optimistic.

ပင်ကိုစရိုက်က ဘာဖြစ်ဖြစ်၊ အကောင်းမြင်ဖို့ ရွေးချယ်နိုင်တုန်းပါ။

And gigantic problems require gigantic optimism.

ကြီးမားတဲ့ ပြဿနာတွေက ကြီးမားတဲ့ အကောင်းမြင်သဘော လိုအပ်ပါတယ်။

We have a moral obligation to be optimistic,

အကောင်းမြင်ဖို့ ကိုယ်ကျင့်ဆိုင်ရာ တာဝန်တစ်ခု ရှိတယ်၊

because when we’re optimistic,

အကောင်းမြင်တဲ့အခါ၊

we can shape the future,

အနာဂတ်ကို ပုံသွင်းနိုင်တယ်၊

we can become better ancestors,

ပိုကောင်းတဲ့ ဘိုးဘေးတွေ ဖြစ်လာနိုင်တယ်၊

we can expand our reach --

လက်လှမ်း ချဲ့နိုင်တယ်၊

create things bigger than ourselves.

ကိုယ်တိုင်ထက် ပိုကြီးတာတွေကို ဖန်တီးနိုင်တယ်။

And we can be a realist in aligning ourselves with this long arc of history

ကျွန်တော်တို့ဟာ ဒီသမိုင်းကြောင်းနဲ့ ညှိယူရာမှာလက်တွေ့ကျသူတစ်ယောက်ဖြစ်နိုင်ပြီး

and embracing problems as opportunities.

ပြဿနာတွေကို အခွင့်အလမ်းတွေအဖြစ် လက်ခံလိုက်တာပါ။

With optimism,

အကောင်းမြင်ဝါဒနဲ့ဆို

we can use it as a power to kind of create the future that we want.

လိုချင်တဲ့ အနာဂတ်ကို ဖန်တီးနိုင်တဲ့ စွမ်းအားတစ်ခုအဖြစ် ဒါကို အသုံးပြုနိုင်တယ်။

This is the way.
