Something happened

and training to be a priest.

I came in contact with a different idea of life.

An idea of life that contradicted the main teachings of religion --

종교의 주된 가르침을 반박하는 이 개념이

humanism.

바로 인본주의입니다.

Some of you may be wondering, what on earth is humanism?

도대체 그게 무엇인지 궁금할 수 있겠죠.

Humanism is a way of thinking and living

인본주의란 인간을 중심에 둔

that emphasizes the agency of human beings.

사고와 삶의 방식입니다.

Humanism stresses the fact that we, human beings,

인본주의는 사람이 세상을 바꿀 수 있다고 강조합니다.

are capable of changing the world.

That we have the power to make a difference in our lives,

우리 모두에게 삶을 바꿀 수 있는 능력이 있다고 말하죠.

both individually and collectively,

개인과 집단 모든 차원에서요.

without recourse to some outside force.

어떤 외부적인 힘에 의지할 필요가 없습니다.

It may interest you to know that the best humanist lessons I learned

재밌게도, 제 인생 최고의 인본주의적 교훈은

were not from reading philosophy books

철학서를 읽거나

or from poring over humanist manifestos and declarations.

성명서와 선언문을 탐독하여 얻은 것이 아닙니다.

No, not at all.

The best humanist lesson I learned was from the life of my own parents.

제 부모님의 삶이 제게는 최고의 교훈이었습니다.

My parents come from a poor family background

부모님은 나이지리아 남동부

in Mbaise, in southeastern Nigeria.

음배씨의 가난한 집안 출신이었습니다.

They had limited opportunities.

그들에게 주어진 기회는 한정적이었지만

But my parents did not allow the circumstances of their bad upbringing

열악한 환경에 굴복하지 않고

to determine the ambition and dreams for themselves and for their children.

자신과 자식을 위해 꿈과 야망을 포기하지 않았습니다.

My father worked part-time, trained as a teacher,

아버지는 시간제로 일하며 교사 교육을 받았습니다.

and rose to become a headmaster at a local primary school.

결국, 그 지역 초등학교의 교장이 되셨지요.

My mother dropped out of school quite early,

어머니는 어린 시절 학업을 포기했습니다.

because her mother, my grandmother, could not afford her education.

As a parent, my mother worked very hard,

어머니는 열심히 일하시며 부모의 역할을 다했습니다.

combining farming, petty trading and taking care of my siblings and me.

농사를 지어서 내다 팔고, 우리 형제를 돌보셨습니다.

By the time I was born --

제가 태어난 시기는

that was shortly after the Nigerian civil war --

비아프라전쟁 직후로

life was very difficult, a struggle day by day.

삶이 고단한 시기였습니다. 하루하루 고군분투했습니다.

My family was living in a hut.

우리 가족은 오두막에 살았습니다.

With the eye of a child, I can still see water

어린 제 눈에도, 비가 오면

dripping from the thatched roof of our house when it rained.

초가지붕에 새는 빗물이 보일 정도였죠.

My father reared goats to supplement the family income.

아버지는 부업으로 염소를 길렀습니다.

And part of my duty after school hours or during vacation

방과 후, 그리고 방학이면

was to feed these goats.

염소 먹이를 주는 것이 제 일이었습니다.

There was no electricity, no pipe with water.

전기도 안 들어왔고, 상수도 시설도 없었습니다.

We trekked to fetch water from the nearby streams.

근처 개울에서 물을 길어와야 했어요.

That was an easy work in the wet season,

우기에는 어렵지 않았지만

but kilometers when it was hot and dry.

무더운 건기에는 수 킬로미터를 걸어야 했어요.

Through hard work and perseverance,

노력과 인내의 결과

my parents were able to erect a block apartment

부모님은 아파트 한 채를 짓고

and send my siblings and me to school.

저와 형제들을 교육했습니다.

They made it possible for us to enjoy a standard of living

자신들은 누려보지 못한 생활 수준과 교육을

which they never did

and to attain educational levels

자식들이 받을 수 있게 했습니다.

which they only imagined when they were growing up.

부모님이 자랄 때는 상상할 수도 없는 일이었죠.

My parents' life, their story, is my best lesson in humanism.

부모님이 살아오신 인생이 제 삶 최고의 인본주의 교훈입니다.

So as a humanist, I believe that human beings

인본주의자로서

저는 인간을 신앙의 포로가 아닌 도전자라고 생각합니다.

are challengers, not prisoners of faith.

Our destinies are in our hands, not predetermined.

운명은 미리 정해져 있지 않고, 우리 손안에 있습니다.

And it's left for us to shape our lives and destinies

희망과 포부를 담아 삶과 운명을 개척하는 것이

to reflect our best hopes and aspirations.

바로 우리의 몫입니다.

I believe that human beings have the power

저는 인간의 힘으로

to turn situations of poverty into those of wealth and prosperity.

가난을 부와 풍요로 바꿀 수 있다고 믿습니다.

We have the capacity to alleviate suffering,

우리의 능력으로 고통을 경감시키고

extend life, prevent diseases,

생명을 연장하고 질병을 예방할 수 있습니다.

cure debilitating ailments, reduce infant mortality

쇠약하여 생긴 병을 고치고 유아 사망률을 감소하며

and preserve our planet.

지구를 보존할 수 있습니다.

But we cannot accomplish all these goals by wishful thinking with our eyes closed

그러나 눈을 감은 채 요행만 바라면 목표를 이룰 수 없습니다.

or by armchair speculation or by expecting salvation from empty sky.

텅빈 하늘을 보며 구세주만 기다린다고 해결되는 건 없죠.

In contrast, millions of Africans imagine that their religious faith

반면, 수백만 명의 아프리카인이 신앙을 통해

will help their dream come true,

자신의 꿈을 이루려고 합니다.

and they spend so much time praying for miracles

그들은 많은 시간을 할애하여 기적이 일어나기를

and for divine intervention in their lives.

신의 영적개입이 있기를 기도합니다.

In 2009, a Gallup survey in 114 countries

2009년 114개국을 대상으로 실시한 갤럽 조사에서

revealed that religiosity was highest in the world's poorest nations.

In fact, six of the 10 countries where 95 percent of the population

said that religion was an important part of their daily lives, were African.

In some cases, religion drives many Africans to extraordinary length:

to attack other human beings, to commit ritual killing,

targeting those living with albinism,

those with a humpback,

and as I recently learned, those with a bald head.

In Africa, superstition is widespread,

with so many people believing in witchcraft,

something that has no basis in reason or in science.

Yet alleged witches, usually women, children and elderly persons

are still routinely attacked, banished and killed.

And I've made it part of my life's mission

to end witchcraft accusation and witch persecution in Africa.

So as a humanist, I believe in a proactive approach to life.

인본주의자로서 저는, 적극적인 삶의 태도를 믿습니다.

The changes that we want cannot be achieved only by dreaming

꿈을 꾼다고 하여 변화가 일어나지는 않습니다.

but require doing as well.

행동이 따라야 합니다.

The challenges that we face cannot go away

우리가 직면한 문제는 저절로 사라지지 않아요.

if we recoil and retreat into our shells, wishing and imagining

자기만의 세계에 웅크리고 앉아서

that those problems will somehow magically disappear.

마법처럼 문제가 해결되기만 바라며 상상한다면

The good life that we desire will not fall like manna from heaven.

우리가 갈망하는 좋은 삶은 하늘의 선물처럼 떨어지지 않습니다.

My parents did not erect a block apartment by wishing and dreaming.

제 부모님은 소망만으로 집을 짓지 않았습니다.

They worked hard, they failed, they tried again.

열심히 일하며 실패도 겪었지만, 다시 시도했어요.

They toiled with rolled-up sleeves,

소매를 걷어붙이고 고된 일을 했습니다.

with their hands deep in debt, they plowed ahead,

빚을 진 채, 앞만 보고 매진하였고

growing their dreams into reality.

꿈을 현실로 만들었습니다.

So as a humanist, I believe we must be adventurous and even daring.

저는 인본주의자로서, 모험적이고 과감한 태도를 믿습니다.

The path of success is paved with risk and uncertainties.

성공으로 가는 길은 불확실과 위험으로 가득합니다.

We have to muster the will and courage to do what people have never done.

누구도 해보지 못한 일을 이루려면, 의지와 용기를 모아야 합니다.

To think what people have never thought.

누구도 해보지 못한 생각을 하고

Envisage what people have never imagined.

여태 상상하지 못한 일들을 상상해 내야 해요.

Go to places human beings have not been to.

인류가 가보지 못한 곳으로 나아가야 합니다.

And succeed where people have tried but failed.

인류가 시도했으나 실패한 일을 성공시켜야 합니다.

We must be ready to explore new frontiers of knowledge and understanding

새로운 지식과 이해의 지평을 열 준비하고

and attempt doing not just what is possible

가능한 일뿐만 아니라

but also what is seemingly impossible.

불가능하게 보이는 것에도 도전해야 합니다.

But I realize that at the end of the day,

하지만 이 모든 노력이

our efforts do not always yield our desires.

원하는 결과를 가져다주진 않습니다.

We fail, we suffer disappointments and setbacks.

실패하고 실망하고 좌절하기도 합니다.

Some problems, such as wars and conflict, poverty and diseases

전쟁과 분쟁, 가난과 질병

and other natural and human-made disasters

천재지변 또는 인재 등의 문제들은

seem as if they may never go away.

영원히 끝나지 않을 듯 보이죠.

Solutions to old problems have led to new dangers,

오랜 문제의 해결책이 새로운 위험을 양산하거나

new cures to diseases have resulted in new health risks.

신약이 오히려 새로이 건강을 위협하는 요인이 되기도 해요.

But the fact that these problems persist

그러나 문제가 지속하고

and that solutions sometimes create their own problems

해결하는 과정에서 새로운 문제들이 발생한다고 해서

is not a reason for us to give up or to resign.

이것이 체념하거나 포기할 이유가 될 순 없습니다.

It's not a reason for us to think that our efforts are of no consequence.

우리의 노력이 소용없었다고 생각할 이유가 없습니다.

In fact, there is fulfillment in striving,

사실은 그 자체로 큰 의미가 있으니까요.

and trying to provide answers and solutions

인류가 직면한 문제에 대한 답과 해법을 제시하려는

to the problem humanity faces

노력 자체가 성취입니다.

even when the likely outcome is failure.

비록 실패할 확률이 높을지라도요.

So as a humanist, I believe we must not despair for humanity.

저는 인본주의자로서, 인류에 절망해서는 안 된다고 믿어요.

Even in the face of overwhelming difficulties

감당하기 힘든 고난과

and in the bleakest of circumstances.

가장 암울한 상황 앞에서도요.

Human beings are creative beings.

인간은 창조적인 생명체입니다.

We have the power to generate new ideas, new solutions and new cures.

우리의 능력으로 새로운 생각, 해법, 치료제를 만들 수 있습니다.

So why despair when the unexpected knocks on the horizon?

무궁무진한 기회 앞에서 절망할 이유가 없습니다.

It is in our nature to create anew, to be inventive and innovative,

창조와 혁신은 우리의 본성입니다.

so why languish in idle expectation of a savior from above?

왜 하늘의 구원을 기대하며 나태하게 머물러 있나요?

So it is time for us Africans to take our destiny in our hands

자신의 손에 운명이 있음을 우리 아프리카인은 알아야 합니다.

and realize we have agency in the scheme of life.

인생을 계획하는 주체는 나 자신임을 깨달을 때입니다.

We need to put an end to this game of blame

이제 비난의 게임에 종지부를 찍읍시다.

that has prevented us from taking full responsibility for our own lives.

비난은 삶에 대한 개인의 책임을 회피하게 합니다.

For too long, we have been prisoners of our past.

우리는 너무 오랫동안, 과거의 포로로 살아왔습니다.

We have allowed despair and pessimism to drain us,

절망과 비난이 우리를 잠식하도록 내버려 뒀습니다.

drain our energies, limit our imaginations

에너지를 소모하고, 상상력을 제한했습니다.

and dim our vision for a better and brighter future.

더 밝고 나은 미래에 대한 비전에 어둠을 드리웠습니다.

We have let this continent flounder.

Why passing the buck like a Frisbee?

We've blamed slavery, colonialism and the new colonialism

우리는 노예제도, 식민주의, 신(新)식민지주의를 탓해왔습니다.

for the woes we experience, including our own self-inflicted wounds.

스스로 불러온 생채기마저 그 탓으로 돌렸어요.

We have conducted ourselves

아프리카는 저주받은 땅이라는 식으로

in ways that seem as if Africa is damned and doomed.

생각하고 행동하며 살았습니다.

And that all these experiences in history

이런 역사 속 경험이

have irreversibly, irreparably foreclosed the chances and possibility

아프리카가 부상할 기회와 번영할 가능성을

for Africa to emerge, thrive and flourish.

돌이킬 수도 없고, 고치지도 못하게 막아버렸죠.

We must realize that there is no part of the world

우리가 반드시 알아야 하는 사실은 세상 어디에도

that has not been colonized or enslaved in the past.

식민지화와 노예화를 겪어보지 않은 곳이 없다는 것이죠.

And if other parts of the world have moved on,

과거를 뒤로하고 앞으로 나아간 국가들이 있습니다.

why can't we, now?

우리라고 못 하겠습니까?

So as a humanist, I believe that the past is gone;

인본주의자로서 말씀드립니다. 과거는 지나갔습니다.

we cannot change it, we cannot alter it.

더는 바꿀 수도, 고칠 수도 없습니다.

But the future beckons us on with limitless possibilities

그러나 미래는 무한한 가능성을 제시합니다.

to recreate, reshape and remake our destinies.

우리는 운명을 재창조하고, 틀을 다시 잡아 재건축할 수 있습니다.

So let's all of us seize this opportunity.

이 기회를 놓치지 맙시다.

And as my parents did, begin the urgent task

제 부모님처럼, 이 시급한 과제에 착수합시다.

of rebuilding Africa, brick by brick.

벽돌을 하나씩 쌓아올려, 아프리카를 재건합시다.

Let's give free reign to our ideas and imaginations,

새로운 사고와 상상에 무한한 자유를 부여합시다.

as demonstrated at this TEDGlobal 2017.

여기 TED Global 2017이 보여주었듯이요.

Let's open our hearts and minds.

가슴과 마음을 활짝 열어봅시다.

And exert our energy, intelligence and ingenuity

우리의 에너지, 지성, 독창성을 동원하여

and begin the urgent task of rebuilding Africa

아프리카를 재건하고

and of transforming this continent

이 대륙을 독보적인 번영과 문명의 요새로 만듭시다.

into a citadel of unrivaled prosperity and civilization.

This is what I believe as a humanist, as an African humanist.
