But I'm going to pick the one that interests me most, and that is the

You know, I found that volcano on Google Images,

not realizing how much it makes me look like the cover of Dianetics.

어디서 많이 봤다 싶었는데 "현대 정신과 과학"의 표지를 연상케 하는군요.

Anyway, this all started a few years ago,

when they started carrying your voice over the Internet rather than over a phone line,

and we've come a long way since that.

휴대폰과 인터넷의 만남- 그 자체가 상당히 흥미로운 주제입니다.

But that was interesting in itself. This is companies like Vonage.

Vonage같은 회사들이 이에 집중했죠.

Basically you take an ordinary telephone, you plug it into this little box

우리가 흔히 쓰는 '보통 전화'에 대해서 생각해 봅시다. 먼저 전원을 연결해야겠죠 .

that they give you and the box plugs into your cable modem.

그리고 전화 모뎀을 연결하고 나면-

Now, it works just like a regular phone.

자- 이제 "보통"전화는 셋팅이 끝난겁니다.

So you can pick up the phone, you hear a dial tone,

수화기를 들고, 다이얼 톤을 들으면 되는거죠

but its just a fake-out. It's a WAV file of a dial tone,

하지만 이것은 일종의 "fake"에요. 이 통화음 자체가 WAV 형식의 파일이거든요.

just to reassure you that the world hasn't ended.

단순히 전화를 걸수 있다는 사실을 사람들에게 확인시켜주는 기능만 하는거죠.

It could be anything. It could be salsa music

or a comedy routine -- it doesn't matter.

The little box has your phone number.

이 작은 상자는 당신의 '전화번호'를 내장하고 있습니다.

So that's really cool -- you can take it to London or Siberia,

and your next door neighbor can dial your home number and your phone will ring,

because it's got everything in the box.

They've got every feature known to man in there,

because adding a new feature is just software.

And as a result of Voice Over IP --

I hate that term -- Voice Over Internet --

저는 그 "Voice Over Internet"이란 말을 싫어합니다.

land-line home-phone service has gone down 30 percent in the last three years.

최근 3년간, 유선 집전화 서비스의 사용률은 30% 가까이 떨어졌습니다.

I mean, no self-respecting college kid has home phone service anymore.

제 생각엔, 대학생 친구들은 유선 집전화 서비스에 대해서는 더 이상 그 어떤 존경심도 가지고 있지 않은 것 같아요

This is what college kids are more likely to have. It's the most popular

VOIP service in the world: It's Skype.

It's a free program you download for your Mac or PC,

PC에 다운로드 받아서 쓸 수 있는 공짜 프로그램이죠.

and you make free phone calls anywhere in the world

다운 받아서 깔기만하면 전세계 어디로든 공짜로 전화를 걸 수 있어요.

The downside is that you have to wear a headset like a nerd.

뭐, 헤드셋을 써야하는 것은 조금 우스꽝스럽긴 하지만

It's not your phone -- it's your computer.

하는 수 없죠! 이건 전화가 아니라 '컴퓨터' 니까요.

But nonetheless, if you're a college kid and you have no money,

이러나 저러나, 여러분이 대학생이라고 생각해보죠. 항상 돈이 궁하구요.

believe me, this is better than trying to use your cell phone.

절 믿으세요. 이 "인터넷 전화"는 휴대폰보다 훨씬 좋아요.

It's really cute seeing middle-aged people

저같은 중년들이 처음으로 스카이프를 쓰는 모습은

like me, try out Skype for the first time,

귀엽기 짝이없어요.

which is usually when their kid goes away for a semester abroad.

주로 자녀들이 학기 중에 집을 떠나 있거나 해외에 있을 때 볼 수 있어요.

They don't want to pay the international fees,

so they're like, "Timmy! Is that you?"

It's really cute.

But I -- at least it was when I did it --

I think where VOIP is really going to get interesting

is when they start putting it on cell phones.

Imagine if you had an ordinary cell phone,

Actually, I need to update that. There's one now.

And it's so interesting that I thought I would tell you about it.

It comes from T-Mobile.

And I am not paid by T-Mobile.

I'm not plugging T-Mobile.

T-Mobile을 칭찬하는 것도 아닙니다.

The New York Times has very rigid policies about that.

Basically, the reason you haven't heard about this program

is because it was introduced last year

on June 29.

It was the iPhone. The iPhone came out that day.

But it's actually really, really cool. You have a choice of phones,

하지만 말이죠, 대단히 대단히 멋진 건 우리에게 선택권이 생겼다는거에요.

and we're not talking smartphones --

스마트 폰도 아니구요

ordinary phones, including a Blackberry, that have Wi-Fi.

그냥 보통 전화기인데 블랙베리처럼 Wi-Fi도 되요.

The deal is, any time you're in a Wi-Fi hotspot,

그 말인 즉슨- 당신이 언제고 Wi-Fi 핫스팟에 존재하기만 한다면-

all your calls are free.

And when you're out of the hotspot, you're on the regular cellular network.

Wi-Fi 핫스팟을 벗어나면, 그냥 일반 네트워크를 통해 전화를 하면 되구요.

You're thinking, "Well, how often am I in a hotspot?"

여러분은 "에이, 내가 얼마나 자주 핫스팟에 있겠어?"라고 생각할지도 모릅니다.

The answer is, "All the time!"

Because they give you

a regular wireless router that works with the phone,

Which is really ingenious, because we all know that

But it's a hundred million dollars to put up one of those towers. Right?

They don't have that kind of money. Instead they give each of us

a seven-dollar-and-95-cent box. They're like a stealth tower installation program.

We're putting it in our homes for them!

Anyway, they have Wi-Fi phones in Europe.

But the thing that T-Mobile did that nobody's done before

중요한 건, 그 어떤 통신사도 하지 않았던 바로 그 시도를 T-Mobile이 했다는 것이죠.

is, when you're on a call an you move from Wi-Fi into cellular range,

As I walk out of the house from my Wi-Fi hotspot

It just changed to the cellular tower in mid-call.

이 모든게 단순히 통화 중간에 전환된 것들이에요.

I don't know why my wife says I never listen to her. I don't get that.

전 도대체 왜 항상 제 아내가 자기말을 잘 들어주지 않는다고 투덜대는지 이해가 안됩니다.

The bottom line is that the boundaries,

because of the Internet plus cell phone, are melting.

왜냐하면 인터넷과 휴대전화는 서로 녹아들고 있기 때문에 저렇게 표현해 보았어요.

The cool thing about the T-Mobile phones

T-mobile의 서비스들이 멋진 이유는

is that although switching technologies is very advanced,

바로 "선진기술"을 받아들이는 것에 대하여 과감하다는 것이에요.

the billing technology has not caught up.

당장 수익성이 눈앞에 보이지 않는다 할지라도 말이죠.

So what I mean is that you can start a call

in your house in the Wi-Fi hotspot,

you can get in your car and talk until the battery's dead --

Which is why most people with this service

Google bought it, and they've been working on it for a year.

They're supposed to come out with it very shortly in a public method.

By the way, this is something that really bothers me.

I don't know if you realize this. When you call 411 on your cell phone,

It is a life-changer.

And by the way, they don't always get the words right,

because it's over the phone and all that.

So they attach the audio file at the bottom of the email

I think the biggest change when Internet met phone

They went around to these carriers and said,

"Look at these cool features." And Verizon is like, "Hmm, no.

It was not very conducive to innovation.
