imagine getting seven infectious mosquito bites every day.

전염성있는 모기에 하루 일곱번 씩 물린다고 상상해볼까요.

That's 2,555 infectious bites every year.

일년이면 2,555번입니다.

When I was in college, I moved to the Kilombero River valley

제가 대학생일 때, 킬롬베로 강 유역으로 이사를 갔습니다.

in the southeastern part of Tanzania.

탄자니아 남동부죠.

This is historically one of the most malarious zones

역사적으로, 당시 세상에서 말라리아가

in the world at that time.

가장 많이 발생하는 지역 중 하나였습니다.

Life here was difficult.

이곳에서의 삶은 힘들었죠.

In its later stages

말라리아가 많이 진행되면

malaria manifested with extreme seizures locally known as degedege.

현지에서는 '데게데게'라고 하는 극심한 발작을 일으킵니다.

It's killed both women and men, adults and children,

여자와 남자, 어른과 아이 할 것없이

without mercy.

많은 사람들이 죽었죠.

My home institution, Ifakara Health Institute,

제가 일하는 이파라카 보건원은

began in this valley in the 1950s

1950년대에 창설되었습니다.

to address priority health needs for the local communities.

이 지역에서 가장 시급한 보건문제들을 해결하기 위한 취지였죠.

In fact, the name Ifakara refers to a place you go to die,

'이파카라'는 사실 죽음을 맞이하러 가는 곳을 말합니다.

which is a reflection of what life used to be here

in the days before organized public health care.

이 지역의 삶을 단적으로 보여주죠.

When I first moved here,

my primary role was to estimate

저의 주 업무는

how much malaria transmission was going on across the villages

말라리아가 마을 간에 얼마나 퍼져나가고 있는지

and which mosquitoes were transmitting the disease.

어떤 모기들이 전염을 시키는지 파악하는 것이었습니다.

So my colleague and myself came

동료들과 함께

30 kilometers south of Ifakara town across the river.

이파카라에서 남쪽으로 30km 정도 강을 가로질러 갔습니다.

Every evening we went into the villages with flashlights and siphons.

저녁마다 손전등과 흡입관을 가지고 여러 마을을 다녔죠.

We rolled up our trousers,

다들 바지를 걷어올리고,

and waited for mosquitoes that were coming to bite us

물려고 달려드는 모기들을 기다렸습니다.

so we could collect them

그것들을 잡아서

to check if they were carrying malaria.

말라리아 보균 여부를 확인하기 위해서였죠.

My colleague and myself selected a household,

제 동료와 한 가정을 골라서

and we started inside and outside, swapping positions every half hour.

30분 교대로 집 안팎을 살피기 시작했습니다.

And we did this for 12 hours every night for 24 consecutive nights.

매일 밤 12시간씩 24일 동안 계속했죠.

We slept for four hours every morning

아침에 4시간 쯤 눈을 붙이고

and worked the rest of the day,

나머지 시간은 작업을 했습니다.

sorting mosquitoes, identifying them and chopping off their heads

잡은 모기들을 분류하고, 감별하고, 머리를 잘라서

so they could be analyzed in the lab

실험실에서 분석할 수 있게 준비했습니다.

to check if they were carrying malaria parasites

흡혈관에 말라리아 기생충이 있는지

in their blood mouthparts.

확인하려는 것이죠.

This way we were able to not only know how much malaria was going on here

이런 식으로 말라리아가 얼마나 발병하는지 뿐 아니라

but also which mosquitoes were carrying this malaria.

그것을 전염시키는 모기들 또한 밝혀낼 수 있었습니다.

We were also able to know

또 알 수 있었던 것은

whether malaria was mostly inside houses or outside houses.

주로 말라리아가 집 안, 아니면 밖에서 발생하는지의 여부입니다.

Today, ladies and gentlemen, I still catch mosquitoes for a living.

여러분, 지금도 저는 직업으로 모기를 잡으러 다닙니다.

But I do this mostly to improve people's lives and well-being.

사람들의 삶과 복지의 향상을 위해서죠.

This has been called by some people the most dangerous animal on earth --

많은 사람들이 모기가 지구상에서 가장 위험한 동물이라고 말합니다.

which unfortunately is true.

불행하게도 사실이죠.

But what do we really know about mosquitoes?

하지만 우리는 모기에 대해 얼마나 알고있을까요?

It turns out we actually know very little.

사실 아는 것이 거의 없습니다.

Consider the fact that at the moment our best practice against malaria

한번 생각해보죠. 현재도 말라리아를 막을 최선의 수단이

are bednets -- insecticide treated bednets.

방충망이라는 사실을요, 살충제 처리가 된 것이겠죠.

We know now that across Africa

이제 아프리카 전역에

you have widespread resistance to insecticides.

이 살충제에 대한 내성이 생겨버렸습니다.

And these are the same insecticides,

이 방충망에 처리되어 있는 것과 같은 것들이죠.

the pyrethroid class, that are put on these bednets.

피레드로이드계 살충제입니다.

We know now that these bednets protect you from bites

방충망은 여러분들이 모기에 물리지 않게 해주지만,

but only minimally kill the mosquitoes that they should.

말처럼 살충제의 역할은 못하고 있죠.

What it means is that we've got to do more to be able to get to zero.

이는 우리가 모기를 전멸시키기까지 할 일이 많이 남아있다는 겁니다.

And that's part of our duty.

바로 그것이 저희의 임무 중 하나입니다.

At Ifakara Health Institute

이파카라 보건원에서는

we focus very much on the biology of the mosquito,

모기의 생물학적 활동에 대해 연구하고 있습니다.

and we try to do this so we can identify new opportunities.

새로운 방식을 찾으려는 노력이죠.

A new approach.

새로운 접근 방식이요.

New ways to try and get new options

새로운 시도와 방식

모기장 같은 것들과 병행이 가능한

that we can use together with things such as bednets

모기를 박멸할 수 있는 새로운 방식들 말이죠.

to be able to get to zero.

And I'm going to share with you a few examples

몇 몇 사례를 말씀드리겠습니다.

of the things that my colleagues and myself do.

동료들과 함께하는 일입니다.

Take this, for example.

한 예로

Mosquitoes breed in small pools of water.

모기들은 작은 웅덩이에서 번식합니다.

Not all of them are easy to find --

찾기가 쉽지 않죠.

they can be scattered across villages,

마을 여기 저기 흩어져 있고,

they can be as small as hoofprints.

발굽 자국만큼 작기도 합니다.

They can be behind your house or far from your house.

뒤뜰에, 아니면 멀리 떨어져 있을수도 있죠.

And so, if you wanted to control mosquito larvae,

it can actually be quite difficult to get them.

What my colleagues and I have decided to do

is to think about what if we used mosquitoes themselves

to carry the insecticides from a place of our choice

to their own breeding habitats

so that whichever eggs they lay there shall not survive.

This is Dickson Lwetoijera.

This is my colleague who runs this show at Ifakara.

And he has demonstrated cleverly that you can actually get mosquitoes

그가 영리하게 입증한 것은, 실제로 모기들을

to come to the place where they normally come to get blood

to pick up a dose of sterilants or insecticide,

carry this back to their own breeding habitat

and kill all their progeny.

And we have demonstrated that you can do this

and crush populations very, very rapidly.

This is beautiful.

아주 대단하죠.

This is our mosquito city.

이곳이 모기 도시입니다.

It is the largest mosquito farm

세계 최대 모기 농장이죠.

말라리아를 연구하는 곳이기도 하죠.

available in the world for malaria research.

Here we have large-scale self-sustaining colonies of malaria mosquitoes

이곳에 저희가 키우는 말라리아 모기들이

that we rear in these facilities.

자생하며 만든 대규모 군락이 형성돼 있습니다.

Of course, they are disease-free.

물론, 보균상태는 아닙니다.

But what these systems allow us to do

이런 시스템 안에서

is to introduce new tools and test them immediately,

새로운 방식을 도입하고, 바로 시험해 볼 수가 있습니다.

very quickly,

아주 신속하게 이뤄지죠.

and see if we can crush these populations or control them in some way.

그리고, 이들을 박멸하거나 통제할 수 있는 방법을 알게 해 줍니다.

And my colleagues have demonstrated

제 동료들이 입증한 또 한가지는,

that if you just put two or three positions

단 두 세 곳이라도

where mosquitoes can go pick up these lethal substances,

모기들이 이 치명적인 물질을 운반해 갈 수 있게 하면,

we can crush these colonies in just three months.

단 3달 안에 그 군락들을 전멸시킬 수 있다는 것입니다.

That's autodissemination, as we call it.

저희는 '자동 전파'라고 하죠.

But what if we could use

만일 우리가

the mosquitoes' sexual behavior

모기들의 생식 활동까지

통제할 수 있다면 어떨까요?

to also control them?

So, first of all I would like to tell you

먼저 알려드릴게요.

that actually mosquitoes mate in what we call swarms.

실제로 모기들은 떼로 짝짓기를 합니다.

Male mosquitoes usually congregate

수컷들은 보통 무리지어 다니고

in clusters around the horizon, usually after sunset.

보통 해가 지면, 지평선 주위에 날아다니죠.

The males go there for a dance,

수컷들은 춤을 추고

the females fly into that dance

암컷들은 그 속으로 날아 들어

and select a male mosquito of their choice,

맘에 드는 수컷을 고릅니다.

usually the best-looking male in their view.

나름 가장 잘생긴 놈이겠죠.

They clump together and fall down onto the floor.

그들은 함께 무리지어 땅으로 낙하하는데

If you watch this, it's beautiful.

멋진 장면이기도 합니다.

It's a fantastic phenomenon.

아주 기막힌 현상이죠.

This is where our mosquito-catching work gets really interesting.

모기 채집을 아주 흥미롭게 만드는 것이죠.

What we have seen, when we go swarm hunting in the villages,

모기 떼 사냥을 다니면서 알게된 것은

is that these swarm locations tend to be at exactly the same location

이들이 항상 같은 장소에 모여 있다는 것입니다.

every day, every week, every month,

매일, 매주, 매달

year in, year out.

해마다 한결같이 말이죠.

They start at exactly the same time of the evening,

저녁 무렵 정확히 똑 같은 시간에

and they are at exactly the same locations.

정확히 같은 장소에 나타납니다.

What does this tell us?

여기서 알 수 있는 것이 뭘까요?

It means that if we can map all these locations across villages,

여러 마을에 걸쳐 이 위치들을 잘 파악해 두면

we could actually

실제로 이 모기의 개체군을

crush these populations by just a single blow.

단번에 박멸할 수 있다는 것입니다.

Kind of, you know, bomb-spray them or nuke them out.

말하자면, 융단폭격을 하거나 핵폭탄을 떨어뜨리는 것이죠.

And that is what we try to do with young men and women

바로 그것이 저희가 여러 마을의 젊은이들과 힘을합쳐

across the villages.

하고 있는 일입니다.

We organize these crews, teach them how to identify the swarms,

팀을 조직하고, 모기 떼를 찾아내고

and spray them out.

살충제를 살포하는 것 등을 교육하고 있습니다.

My colleagues and I believe we have a new window

이제 새로운 국면이라고 저희들은 생각합니다.

to get mosquitoes out of the valley.

이 지역에서 완전히 모기들을 몰아내는 것 말이죠.

But perhaps the fact that mosquitoes eat blood, human blood,

모기는 피를 빨아먹고 살기 때문에, 특히 사람의 피를,

is the reason they are the most dangerous animal on earth.

지구상에서 가장 위험한 동물입니다.

But think about it this way --

이렇게 생각해보죠.

mosquitoes actually smell you.

모기는 사실은 여러분의 냄새를 맡습니다.

And they have developed

그리고, 엄청난 감각 기관들을

incredible sensory organs.

They can smell from as far sometimes as 100 meters away.

100미터나 떨어진 곳의 냄새도 맡을 수 있으니까요.

And when they get closer,

they can even tell the difference between two family members.

한 식구인 두 마리의 모기 중 누가 누구인지도 구별할 수 있다고 합니다.

They know who you are based on what you produce

from your breath, skin, sweat and body odor.

여러분의 입김, 피부, 땀, 체취 등 으로부터죠.

What we have done at Ifakara

이파카라에서 저희가 한 일은

is to identify what it is in your skin, your body, your sweat or your breath

여러분의 피부, 체취, 땀, 입김 등에서 모기가 좋아하는 물질이 무엇인지

that these mosquitoes like.

알아내는 것이었습니다.

Once we identified these substances, we created a concoction,

이 물질들을 발견하고, 일종의 혼합제제를 개발했습니다.

여러가지 합성 물질들을 혼합해서

kind of a mixture, a blend of synthetic substances

우리 몸에서 배출되는 것과 유사한 물질을 만든 것이죠.

that are reminiscent of what you produce from your body.

And we made a synthetic blend

그리고, 저희가 만든 혼합제제 중 하나는

that was attracting three to five times more mosquitoes than a human being.

사람보다 3배에서 5배 가량 더 많은 모기를 유인할 수 있는 것이었습니다.

What can you do with this?

이것으로 할 수 있는 것이 뭐가 있을까요?

You put in a trap, lure a lot of mosquitoes and you kill them, right?

덫에 바르고, 많은 모기들을 유인해서 죽이는 겁니다, 그렇죠?

물론, 관찰용으로 쓸 수도 있습니다.

And of course, you can also use it for surveillance.

At Ifakara

이파카라 보건원에서는

we wish to expand our knowledge on the biology of the mosquito;

모기의 생리 활동에 대한 지식을 더 넓힐 수 있길 바랍니다.

to control many other diseases, including, of course, the malaria,

말라리아 뿐 아니라, 더 많은 질병들을 방지하려는 것이죠.

but also those other diseases that mosquitoes transmit

모기로 인해 전염되는

like dengue, Chikungunya and Zika virus.

뎅기, 치쿤구니야, 지카 바이러스 등이죠.

And this is why my colleagues, for example --

이것이 제 동료들이, 예를 들어

we have looked at the fact

어떤 모기들은 주로 다리 쪽을 문다는 사실에

that some mosquitoes like to bite you on the leg region.

주목하는 이유입니다.

And we've now created these mosquito repellent sandals

그래서 모기를 쫒는 샌들도 만들어서

that tourists and locals can wear when they're coming.

관광객과 지역 주민들이 신을 수 있도록 했습니다.

And you don't get bitten --

모기에 물리지 않게

this gives you 'round the clock protection

온 종일 보호해 줍니다.

until the time you go under your bednet.

모기장 안에 들어갈 때까지 말이죠.

My love-hate relationship with mosquitoes continues.

저의 이 모기와의 애증 관계는 계속 될 것입니다.

And it's going to go a long way, I can see.

분명히 아주 오래 갈테지만,

But that's OK.

뭐, 괜찮습니다.

WHO has set a goal of 2030 to eliminate malaria from 35 countries.

세계 보건 기구는 2030년까지 35개국에서 말라리아를 박멸할 목표를 세웠습니다.

The African Union has set a goal

아프리카 연합 또한

of 2030 to eliminate malaria from the continent.

2030년까지 전 대륙에서 말라리아를 없앨 목표를 정했죠.

At Ifakara we are firmly behind these goals.

이파카라 보건원도 굳게 지지하는 것입니다.

And we've put together a cohort of young scientists,

저희는 젊은 과학자들 중심으로 모임을 만들었습니다.

male and female,

남녀 상관없이

who are champions,

신념이 강하고

who are interested in coming together to make this vision come true.

이 비전을 현실로 만들기 위해 합심해 일할 사람들로 구성돼 있습니다.

They do what they can

성공할 수 있도록

to make it work.

가능한 무엇이든 하고있죠.

And we are supporting them.

그리고 저희가 그들을 지원하고 있습니다.

We are here to make sure that these dreams come true.

Let's talk about CRISPR for a bit.

잠시 '크리스퍼'에 대해 얘기해보죠.

It's taken the world by storm,

온 세상을 들썩이게 하고,

it promises to do amazing things.

굉장한 일들을 약속하고 있는데요.

What do you think of scientists using CRISPR to kill off mosquitoes?

과학자들이 크리스퍼를 이용해 모기 박멸을 하는 것에 대해 어떻게 생각하시나요?

Fredros Okumu: To answer this question, let's start from what the problem is.

답하기 전에, 문제가 뭔지부터 알아보죠.

First of all, we're talking about a disease that still kills --

우선, 지금 우리는 아주 치명적인 병에 대해서 논하고 있습니다.

according to the latest figures we have from WHO --

세계 보건 기구의 최근 조사에 따르면

429,000 people.

여전히 429,000명의 사람들이 죽고있습니다.

Most of these are African children.

대부분 아프리카 어린이들이죠.

Of course, we've made progress,

물론, 상황이 좋아지고는 있습니다.

there are countries that have achieved

몇 몇 나라에서는

up to 50-60 percent reduction in malaria burden.

50~60% 이상까지 말라리아의 발생률이 줄었죠.

But we still have to do more to get to zero.

하지만 완전히 없애기까지는 여전히 해야 할 일들이 많습니다.

There is already proof of principle

이미 원리에 대한 증명은 돼있죠.

that gene-editing techniques, such as CRISPR,

크리스퍼와 같은 유전자 편집 기술들 말입니다.

can be used effectively

to transform mosquitoes so that either they do not transmit malaria --

모기들을 변형시키는 것에 효과적으로 사용이 가능합니다.

we call this population alteration --

저희는 이것을 개체 변이라 부릅니다.

or that they no longer exist,

혹은 개체들이 더이상 존재하지 않는 경우는

population suppression.

개체 억제라고 부르죠.

This is already proven in the lab.

연구실에서 이미 증명이 됐고

There is also modeling work

견본 또한 존재합니다.

that has demonstrated that even if you were to release

이렇게 조작된 유전자를 가진

just a small number of these genetically modified mosquitoes,

모기들을 조금만 풀어 놓더라도

that you can actually achieve elimination very, very quickly.

아주 빠른 시간안에 모기 퇴치가 가능하다는 것이죠.

So, CRISPR and tools like this offer us some real opportunities --

크리스퍼, 또 이와 같은 기술들이 많은 가능성을 열어주고 있습니다.

real-life opportunities to have high-impact interventions

아주 효과적으로 실생활에 이용이 가능한 것이죠.

that we can use in addition to what we have now

현재 저희가 보유하고 있는 기술들과 접목해서

to eventually go to zero.

궁극적으로 모기를 멸종시키는데 쓰일 것입니다.

This is important.

중요한 일이죠.

Now, of course people always ask us --

물론, 사람들은 항상 질문합니다.

which is a common question,

공통된 것인데요.

I guess you're going to ask this as well --

역시 같은 질문을 하실거라 생각합니다.

"What happens if you eliminate mosquitoes?"

“모기가 멸종하면 어떤 일이 일어날까요?”

KK: I won't ask then, you answer.

묻지 않을테니까, 그냥 말씀해주시죠.

FO: OK. In respect to this, I would just like to remind my colleagues

그러죠. 이 질문에 관해서 먼저 제 동료들에게 상기시켜 주고 싶은 것은,

that we have 3,500 mosquito species in this world.

3,500종의 모기가 지구상에 존재한다는 것입니다.

Maybe more than that.

그 이상일 수도 있겠네요.

About 400 of these are Anophelenes,

이 중 약 400종이 말라리아 모기이고

and only about 70 of them have any capacity to transmit malaria.

그 중 70종 정도만이 말라리아를 전염시킬 수 있습니다.

In Africa, we're having to deal with three or four of these as the major guys.

아프리카에서, 저희는 이 중 세 네 종을 주로 연구하고 있습니다.

They carry most -- like 99 percent of all the malaria we have.

우리가 걸리는 말라리아의 99퍼센트 정도를 옮기는 놈들이죠.

If we were to go out with gene editing like CRISPR,

if we were to go out with gene drives to control malaria,

we would be going after only one or two.

I don't see a diversity problem with that.

여러 방법을 이용하는 것이 문제라고 생각하진 않습니다.

But that's personal view.

하지만, 제 개인적인 의견이죠.

I think it's OK.

괜찮다고 생각합니다.

And remember, by the way,

하지만, 꼭 기억할 것은

all these years we've been trying to eliminate these mosquitoes effectively

모기를 효과적으로 퇴치하는 연구에 바친 수 년의 시간이죠.

by spraying them -- our colleagues in America have sprayed with --

제 동료들이 미국에서도 사용한 살충제를 살포하면서 말이죠.

여러 마을에서 이 모기들을 전멸시키려고 정말 퍼붓다시피 했습니다.

really bomb-spraying these insects out of the villages.

In Africa we do a lot of household spraying.

아프리카에서는 가정마다 살충제를 많이 살포합니다.

All these are aimed solely at killing the mosquitoes.

모기들만 골라서 죽이도록 하고 있습니다.

So there's really no problem if we had a new tool.

새로운 방법이 있다면, 그것이 문제될 것은 없죠.

But having said that, I have to say

하지만 동시에, 이 말도 꼭 드려야겠습니다.

we also have to be very, very responsible here.

그것에 막중한 책임이 따른다는 것이죠.

So there's the regulatory side, and we have to partner with our regulators

규제도 있어야 하고, 감독 기관들과 협력해서

and make sure that everything that we do is done correctly,

is done responsibly

책임감있게 이뤄지는지 확실히 해야겠죠.

and that we also have to do independent risk assessments,

to just make sure

that all these processes do not fall into the wrong hands.
