and I have something to confess; I don't want you guys to judge me.

Glen Henry: OK, I was working the job I hated,

제 상사와 저는 잘 맞지 않았습니다.

my manager and I were not getting along.

저는 차에 앉아 백미러를 보면서

I was sitting in my car, looking in the rearview mirror,

trying to figure out which friend I could call

제 친구 중 누구를 불러서

to call in a bomb threat,

폭파 협박 전화를 시킬지 고민하고 있었습니다.

so I didn't have to go back in the building.

제가 다시 그 건물에 들어가지 않아도 되게끔 말이죠.

(Laughter)

OK, this was having a lot of issues for me,

I was having a lot of issues at my job

제 일에 많은 문제가 있었고

and I'd come home every day from work

매일 직장에서 집으로 돌아오면

and my wife would ask me the same question.

아내는 저에게 항상 같은 질문을 했습니다.

And when you hate your job,

여러분이 싫어하는 일을 하고 계신다면

this is the worst question anyone could ask you.

아마 누군가에게 가장 듣기 싫은 질문일 것입니다.

She'd say, "Hey babe, how was your day?"

아내가 말합니다, "여보, 오늘 하루는 어땠어?"

(Laughter)

And I'd say,

저는 말합니다.

"Why you bringing up old stuff?"

"왜 그런 고리타분 한 얘기를 꺼내?"

(Laughter)

(웃음)

I just left it, I don't want to think about that place again.

그냥 말을 끊어요, 다시는 그 곳을 떠올리기 싫었거든요.

See, we were spending about 40 percent of my income on childcare.

저희는 제 수입의 40%를 육아에 소비하고 있었습니다.

We had one child.

아이가 하나 있고

And we were pregnant with our second child.

둘째 아이를 임신 중이었습니다.

And we were trying to figure out how we were going to fix this whole thing

저희는 어떻게 이 전체적인 재정 문제를 해결할지

of this money situation, and she said,

고민하던 중 아내가 말하길

"Hey, babe, I've got a great idea."

"여보, 좋은 생각이 있어."

I said, "What's up?"

"뭔데?"

She said, "I think you'd be a great stay-at-home dad."

"나는 당신이 살림하는 아빠가 되면 좋을 것 같아."

(Laughter)

I was like, "Why would you say something like that?"

저는, "왜 그런 말을 나한테 하는 거야?" 그랬습니다.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

She said, "Because babies like you."

아내가 말하길, "아이들이 당신을 좋아하니까."

(Laughter)

(웃음)

I was like, "No, they don't."

저는, "아냐, 그렇지 않아."

She was like, "No, they do like you.

아내는, "아냐, 아이들은 당신을 정말 좋아해.

And I think it would be great

그리고 아이들이

for our children to see what love looks like, coming from a father."

아빠에게 받는 사랑이 무엇인지를 느껴보면 좋을 것 같아."

I was like, OK.

저는 일단 알겠다..고 했죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

So, I had issues with this,

그런데 문제가 있었어요.

because I haven't seen a lot of stay-at-home dads before

살림하는 아빠들을 많이 보지 못했거든요.

and I thought men would judge me, so get this, I said this --

그리고 사람들이 저를 비판할 것 같았어요, 그래서 이렇게 말을 했어요.

please don't be offended -- I said,

화내지 마세요, 저는 말했죠,

"Uh, you know, that sounds boring.

"음, 있잖아, 좀 별로인 것 같아.

And what do stay-at-home moms do all day, anyway?"

그건 그렇고 전업주부 엄마들이 하루 종일 무슨 일을 하는데?"

Audience: Ooh!

관객: 우우!

She smiled at me a smile only a woman full of knowledge can smile

아내는 저에게 현명한 여성만이 지을 수 있는 미소를 보여주었죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

and said, "Well, this should be easy for you.

그리고 말했죠, "음, 당신에게 쉬울 거야.

And it will save us some money, it seems like a no-brainer."

그리고 돈을 아낄 수 있지. 너무 당연한 얘기야."

(Laughter)

(웃음)

Fast-forward six months,

여섯 달 전으로 돌아가,

I'd been a stay-at-home dad for about a week.

제가 주부 아빠가 된 지 한 주가 지났습니다.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

I was standing in my bathroom, looking into the mirror

저는 화장실에 서서, 거울을 보고

(Laughter)

(웃음)

crying, tears --

울고 있었어요, 눈물이...

(Laughter)

(웃음)

running all down my face.

온 얼굴로 흘렀어요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

My one-and-a-half-year-old was banging on the bathroom door --

18개월 된 저의 아이는 화장실 문을 쾅쾅 두드려요.

because I locked them out, you know --

제가 잠궜거든요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

crying, tears running down his face.

울고 있었어요, 아이도 눈물범벅이 되었죠.

And my newborn was in the bassinet, crying, tears running down his face.

그리고 저의 갓 태어난 아기는 아기 침대에서 울고 있었죠.

I looked at myself in the mirror, and I said ...

저는 거울을 보며 혼자 말했습니다.

"Which friend can you call to call in a bomb threat?

"폭파 협박을 시킬 친구 누구 없을까?

We've got to get out of here."

여기서 나가야 해!"

(Laughter)

See, I had traded my manager for my children.

저는 제 상사와 아이를 맞바꾼 셈입니다.

I didn't know what I got myself into.

제가 어떤 처지에 빠지게 될지 몰랐어요.

I thought I knew everything about being a stay-at-home parent,

제가 집에서 있는 부모가 되는 것에 대해 모든 것을 알고 있다고 생각했지만

and in fact, I knew nothing at all.

사실, 아무것도 몰랐어요.

Because even though my manager was --

비록 제 상사는

well, at least my children were a lot cuter than my manager,

음, 제 아이들이 상사보다 훨씬 더 귀엽긴 하지만

they were just as demanding.

아이들은 너무 부담이 됐어요.

(Video) Child: Wipe my butt.

(영상)아이: 엉덩이 닦아줘.

Papa, wipe my butt.

아빠, 엉덩이 닦아줘.

GH: What had I gotten myself into?

글렌 헨리: 제가 어떤 처지에 빠지게 한 건가요?

I thought I knew everything about being a stay-at-home parent --

저는 전업주부 부모가 되는 것에 대해 모든 걸 알고 있다고 생각했지만,

in fact, I knew nothing.

사실은, 그렇지 않았죠.

제가 해야될 건 아이들 밥을 먹이고

I thought that all I had to do was feed them,

change their diapers, and they'd be fine.

기저귀 갈아주고, 그럼 다 되는 줄 알았어요.

Like, I really thought that's it.

정말로 이러면 다 된 줄 알았어요.

"Sesame Street" on TV, keep them distracted,

TV에 "세서미 스트리트" 틀어주고 주의를 분산시키고

apple sauce in a bowl, milk in a bottle, they'd be fine.

그릇에 사과 소스, 병에 우유가 있으면 괜찮을 줄 알았어요.

But if you leave children alone,

하지만 아이들을 혼자 남겨 두면

they'll get into just a little bit of mischief.

아이들은 정말 아주 약간 나빠집니다.

(Video) Child: Hi.

(영상)아이: 안녕.

GH: Where is the powder?

글렌 헨리: 파우더 어디 있어?

Child: I don't know.

아이: 몰라요.

GH: Well, where did you put it, where did it --

글렌 헨리: 아니, 어디다 뒀어, 어디, 어디다가

Who did it?

이거 누가 그랬어?

Child 1: No, you did it! Child 2: No, you did it!

아이 1: 너가 했잖아! 아이 2: 아냐, 너가 했잖아!

Child 1: No, you did it! Child 2: No, you did it!

아이 1: 아냐, 너가 했잖아! 아이 2: 아냐, 너가 했잖아!

(Laughter)

GH: You know what else I thought I knew about being a stay-at-home parent?

글렌 헨리: 제가 전업 부모가 되는 것에 대해 또 알고 있다고 착각한 게 뭔지 아세요?

I thought that all I had to do was take them to the park once a week,

아이들을 한 주에 한번 공원에 데려가는 것인 줄 알았어요.

because if I took them to the park once a week, they'd be fine.

제가 한 주에 한번 아이들을 데리고 갔을 땐 문제 없었거든요.

In fact, I knew nothing at all.

실은, 제가 아무것도 몰랐던 거죠.

OK.

네.

If you take kids to park every day then that means they get dirty every day.

만약 아이들을 매일 공원에 데려가면 아이들은 매일 더러워 집니다.

If they got dirty every day, they need baths every day,

아이들이 매일 더러워 지면 매일 목욕을 해야 되고

if they got baths every day --

매일 목욕을 하게 되면

I just don't think you understand, see, having two kids under two,

이해하지 못하셨을텐데요, 2살 이하의 아이 두 명이 있으면

you end up changing over 20 dirty diapers a day, OK.

여러분은 하루에 20장이 넘는 기저귀를 갈아줘야 됩니다.

And if you give them a bath, that's just more nakedness.

그리고 아이들 목욕을 시켜주면 다 벗은 상태가 되는 거죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And a higher probability of getting peed on,

오줌을 맞을 더 높은 가능성과

and no one likes getting peed on, even if it's from a baby.

누구도 오줌 맞는 걸 좋아하진 않잖아요, 아이가 그래도 말이죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

But I read this article by Father Lee

그러나 저는 Father Lee가 작성한 글을 읽었습니다.

which cites a survey done by two detergent companies, Omo and Persil.

세제 회사인 오모와 퍼실의 설문조사를 인용한 기사였죠.

And they did this study and it said, that at two hours a day,

그들이 진행한 연구에서, 하루에 두 시간

prisoners get more outside time than children.

재소자들이 아이들보다 더 많은 야외 활동 시간을 가진다고 합니다.

That convicted me and so we went outside.

그게 절 설득했고, 그래서 우리는 밖으로 나갔습니다.

GH: See, I knew nothing about being a stay-at-home parent,

글렌 헨리: 네, 부모가 되는 법에 대해 아무것도 몰랐습니다.

and once I embraced the fact that I knew nothing,

제가 아무것도 모른다는 사실을 받아들였을 때

제 새로운 선배들에게 배우기 시작했습니다.

I began to learn from my new managers.

And I always was told

그리고 저는 항상 들었습니다

that as a stay-at-home parent, you get no sleep.

집에 있는 부모가 되면, 잠을 자지 못한다고요.

Or as a parent in general, you get no sleep.

혹은 일반적인 부모는, 잠을 못 잔다고요.

But that's not true, because if you sleep when they do,

하지만 그건 사실이 아닙니다. 아이들이 잘때 잠을 자면

you actually can get some sleep.

사실 숙면을 좀 취할 수 있습니다.

(Laughter)

You know what else I thought as a stay-at-home parent?

제가 집에 있는 부모로서 생각한 게 또 뭔지 아세요?

I though I knew that the best way to teach kids right from wrong

아이들에게 옳고 그른 것을 가르치는 가장 좋은 방법은

was to discipline them,

훈육이라고 생각했습니다.

because that would make sure they understood right from wrong,

왜냐하면 그것이 아이들에게 옳고 그른 것과

the pain, the fear -- that would teach them.

고통, 공포를 확실히 이해시켜주고, 그것이 아이들을 가르칠 거라고요.

But the truth is, the best way to teach my children right from wrong

그러나 사실, 제가 생각하기에 아이들을 가르치는 가장 좋은 방법은

is to teach them.

가르치는 것입니다.

Take out a whiteboard and draw pictures and make connections

칠판을 꺼내 그림을 그리고 아이들이 이해할 수 있는

that they can understand.

연결고리를 만들어줍니다.

That was the best way.

그게 가장 좋은 방법이었어요.

You know what I also knew about being a stay-at-home parent?

I knew that children needed love,

전 아이들은 사랑이 필요하다는 건 알았죠.

but I just didn't know what love looked like.

그런데 저는 사랑이 어떤 것인지 잘 몰랐어요.

GH: It turns out putting diapers on your head

글렌 헨리: 처음에는 머리에 기저귀를 쓰는 것부터 시작해서

and play-fighting until the kids fall asleep

아이들이 잠들 때까지 대결을 벌이는 방법은

is a great way to love your kids.

아이들을 사랑하는 훌륭한 방법입니다.

So, I was learning a lot,

저는 많은 것을 배우고 있었지만

but it's not all fun and boogers, is it?

모든 게 재미있고 코딱지인 건 아니죠, 그렇죠?

(Laughter)

I asked a group of stay-at-home parents what's the hardest thing,

저는 부모들을 대상으로 어떤 점이 가장 힘든지

the thing they underestimated most about being stay-at-home parents,

전업 부모가 되는 것에서 가장 과소평가한 게 뭔지 물어봤습니다.

부모들은 외로움이 그 중 하나라고 답했습니다.

and they said that the loneliness was one of those things.

Not having someone else to talk to, feeling inadequate,

대화할 사람이 없고, 허전한 기분이 들며

나를 위한 시간을 갖는 게 이기적으로 느껴지고

feeling selfish for wanting me-time.

And nursery rhymes suck.

동요는 형편없죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

Like, really, "Mary Had a Little Lamb" is cool the first couple of times,

정말로, "메리의 어린 양"은 처음 몇 번 부를 땐 좋은데

but after all these years on repeat,

반복하기를 수 년이 지나면

you wonder why Mary just ain't make herself a wool skirt

여러분은 메리가 그냥 양털 치마를 만들고

and have lamb chops, you know what I'm saying?

양고기를 먹으면 될 것을 왜 안 그랬는지 의문이 들 겁니다.

The one thing I underestimated most was the emotional fatigue.

제가 가장 과소평가했던 것은 감정적 피로였습니다.

See, I was an artist, so I'd write songs for other artists.

네, 저는 예술가였고, 저는 다른 아티스트들의 곡을 썼습니다.

Because that's how I made money from home.

그게 제가 집에서 돈을 버는 방법이었으니까요.

But when you're with your kids all day, you become emotionally tired.

그러나 아이들과 온종일 함께 있으면, 감정적으로 지치게 됩니다.

And that means all your creativity comes from your emotions,

so you’re just tapped out, you're done.

So you become done with time.

Nap time, time-tables, time-out, time like to cook,

낮잠 시간, 시간표, 쉬는 시간, 요리하는 시간,

with all types of time, you're just done.

모든 종류의 시간과, 여러분은 끝나게 됩니다.

You had no time for anything.

여러분은 어떤 것을 할 시간이 없어요.

And some people are done with their spouse as a stay-at-home parent.

어떤 사람들은 전업주부 부모로서 배우자와의 관계가 끝났다고 합니다.

Because the spouse just doesn't get it.

배우자가 이해를 하지 못하거든요.

I was talking to a friend of mine, he said,

제 친구랑 얘기를 하다가, 친구가

"Man, I come home from work,

"야, 일 끝나고 집으로 돌아왔더니

drawers are open, clothes hanging outside the drawers,

서랍은 열려있고, 옷은 서랍 밖에 걸려있고

the kids are still in their pajamas ...

아이들은 아직까지 잠옷을 입고 있고 ...

And it can't be that hard to have dinner ready when I get home, right?"

집에 도착했을 때 저녁이 차려져 있는 게 그렇게 어려운 건 아니잖아, 그치?"

(Laughter)

(웃음)

Start to freak out, you know what I'm saying?

미치기 시작했어요, 이해되죠? 그러니까

(Laughter)

(웃음)

He was trying to confide in me --

친구는 저에게 비밀을 털어놓으려 했어요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

I said, "You have no idea what you're talking about."

저는 말했죠, "넌 몰라, 네가 무슨 말을 하고 있는지."

(Laughter)

(웃음)

She wakes up every morning, tired from the night before,

네 아내는 전날 밤부터 피곤한 상태로 매일 아침 일어나고

baby attached to her breast, dropping this kid off at school,

아기를 가슴에 안고, 한 아이는 학교에 데려다 주고

한 아이는 공원에 데려가고

and taking this one to the park.

빨래는 산더미 같이 쌓여 있으며

Laundry piles up to the skies,

또 시어머니와 1시간 가까이 통화를 하고

he has a conversation on the phone for an hour with your mom

어쩌구 저쩌구

about God knows what,

또 네가 데려오고 싶어했던 개를 산책시켜.

takes the dog you wanted for a walk ...

(웃음)

(Laughter)

And nobody died, bro.

그리고, 모두 무사하잖아.

She kept your kids alive all day, that's hard."

네 아내는 아이들이 항상 살아있도록 하잖아, 그게 힘든 거지."

(Laughter)

(웃음)

I have become an advocate for stay-at-home parents.

저는 집에 있는 부모들의 지지자가 되었습니다.

Why?

그 이유는

Because finally, I was standing in their shoes.

마침내 저는 그들의 입장에서 생각하게 되었거든요.

Because when you're standing in someone else's shoes,

다른 사람의 입장에서 생각하게 되면

여러분은 세상을 다른 관점으로 보게 됩니다.

you see the world from a different perspective.

그리고 발걸음을 내딛으려 하면, 아기 걸음마같죠, 휘청거려요.

And when you start to take steps, it feels like baby steps, wobbling.

But then they turn into stomps.

그러나 그것이 나중에 힘찬 걸음이 됩니다.

And you start making footprints for the next generation to walk in.

그리고 다음 세대가 따라 걸을 수 있는 발자국을 남기기 시작하죠.

See, we're walking on a certain path, as parents.

우리는 부모로서 같은 길을 걷고 있습니다.

We're all in this together.

우리는 모두 여기 함께 있어요.

No one can deny that family is one of the biggest foundations

어느 누구에게나 가족이 커다란 삶의 토대가 된다는 것은

in anyone's life.

누구도 부정할 수 없을 것입니다.

And we're all walking on this path,

그리고 우리는 모두 이 길을 걷고 있고

and we're pulling these thickets out of the way, and these thorns,

우리는 덤불들과 가시들을 이 길에서 밀어내고 있습니다.

making it easier for the ones coming after us.

우리를 뒤따라오는 아이들이 더욱 편안하도록 말이죠.

It turns out, parenting has a lot more to do with landscaping.

육아는 이것들과 훨씬 관련이 있다고 나타납니다.

조경, 그리고 배움과 말이에요.

And learning.

More than teaching.

가르침보다 더더욱 말이죠.

And the best thing to do is to show up for class.

그리고 가장 좋은 것은 배움에 참여하는 것입니다.

Be present is what I learned as a stay-at-home dad.

제가 집에 있는 아빠로서 배운 건 선물이 되는 것입니다.

And let your presence be a gift.

I thought that the father was supposed to pursue the child.

But it turns out the father makes himself present.

And the children run after him.

아이들은 아버지를 따라오게 됩니다.

And that right there is a superpower.

그리고 바로 이것이, 초능력입니다.

And that right there, my friends, is everything.

그리고 여러분, 바로 이것이, 전부입니다.
