The two places

The first is inside of dance.

Somewhere between rising up against gravity

is falling in love with my body's weight.

like I might never come down.

The second place that I feel free

두 번째 장소는

is after scoring a goal on the soccer pitch.

축구 경기장에서 골을 넣은 후입니다.

My body floods with the chemical

마치 제 몸은 에피펜(Epipens) 아드레날린 치료제를

that they put inside of EpiPens to revive the dead,

잔뜩 넣은 것처럼 화학 반응을 일으키며

and I am weightless,

아무런 중력도 느끼지 못하게 됩니다.

raceless.

My story is this: I'm a curator at a contemporary arts center,

오늘 저의 이야기는

but I don't really believe in art that doesn't bleed or sweat or cry.

I imagine that my kids are going to live in a time

I love pretty dances and majestic sculpture

but give me something else to go with it.

Lift me up with the aesthetic sublime

and give me a practice or some tools to turn that inspiration

For instance, I'm a theater maker who loves sports.

When I was making my latest piece /peh-LO-tah/

I thought a lot about how soccer was a means for my own immigrant family

축구가 과연 미국에서 새 삶을 시작한 이민자인 제 가족들에게

to foster a sense of continuity and normality and community

지속성, 정규성, 공동체성 등을 향상하는 데 어떠한 의미가 있을지

within the new context of the US.

곰곰이 생각을 해보았습니다.

In this heightened moment of xenophobia and assault on immigrant identity,

외국인 혐오증과 이민자들에 대한 폭력이 증가하고 있는 이 시대에서

I wanted to think through

1세대 미국인들과 이민자 아이들에게

how the game could serve as an affirmational tool

어떻게 해야 축구 경기를 긍정적 도구로 제공할 수 있을지

for first-generation Americans and immigrant kids,

생각을 해보고 싶었습니다.

to ask them to consider movement patterns on the field

as kin to migratory patterns across social and political borders.

Whether footballers or not,

immigrants in the US play on endangered ground.

I wanted to help the kids understand

저는 아이들에게 우리가 다음 단계로 나아가는 계획을 세우기 위해서는

that the same muscle that they use to plan the next goal

can also be used to navigate the next block.

For me, freedom exists in the body.

저에게 자유란, 제 몸의 내면에 존재하는 것입니다.

We talk about it abstractly and even divisively,

like "protect our freedom," "build this wall,"

We have all these systems that are beautifully designed

to incarcerate us or deport us,

but how do we design freedom?

그렇다면 우리는 어떻게 자유를 설계할 수 있을까요?

For these kids, I wanted to track the idea back to something that exists inside

저는 아이들에게 자유는 아무도 빼앗을 수 없는 내면에 있는 것이라고

that no one could take away,

아이들의 생각을 되돌리고 싶었습니다.

so I developed this curriculum

that's part poli-sci class, part soccer tournament,

Imagine that you are a 15-year-old kid from Honduras

여러분이 할렘가에서 살고 있는 온두라스 출신의 15세 아이나

now living in Harlem,

워싱턴 DC에 사는 나이지리아 이민자 부모에게 태어난 13세 소녀라고

or you're a 13-year-old girl born in DC to two Nigerian immigrants.

한번 상상해 보세요.

You love the game.

여러분은 축구를 매우 좋아해 친구들과 함께 필드에 왔습니다.

You're on the field with your folks.

You've just been practicing dribbling through cones

그리고는 삼각뿔을 이리저리 통과하며 15분간 드리블 연습을 했고요.

for, like, 15 minutes,

and then, all of a sudden, a marching band comes down the field.

그 순간 갑자기, 행진하는 밴드가 필드 아래로 내려오는 겁니다.

I want to associate the joy of the game with the exuberance of culture,

저는 축구의 즐거움을 문화의 다양성과 접목하고 싶었습니다.

to locate the site of joy in the game

그래서 축구 경기에서 느낄 수 있는 신체적인 즐거움을 찾아냈고

at the same physical coordinate

이와 동일한 신체적인 표현을 응용하여

as being politically informed by art,

예술이라는 장르를 통해 정치적 메시지를 전달하고 싶었습니다.

a grass-laden theater for liberation.

우리 미래의 자유를 위한 잔디밭이라는 극장에서 말입니다.

We spend a week

우리는 일주일 동안

looking at how the midfielder would explain Black Lives Matter,

미드필더가 흑인의 삶을 어떻게 표현하는지 살펴보았고

or how the goalkeeper would explain gun control,

골키퍼가 총기 규제를 어떻게 표현하는지

or how a defender's style is the perfect metaphor

수비수가 표현한 스타일이 미국 예외주의의 한계를

for the limits of American exceptionalism.

As we study positions on the field,

we also name and imagine our own freedoms.

I don't know, man, soccer is, like,

아마도 축구는

the only thing on this planet that we can all agree to do together.

지구상에서 우리 모두가 유일하게 함께 할 수 있는 한 가지일 것입니다.

You know? It's like the official sport of this spinning ball.

공을 회전시키는 공식적인 스포츠죠.

I want to be able to connect the joy of the game

저는 우리 게임의 즐거움이 활발한 활동을 하는 축구선수들과

to the ever-moving footballer,

연결될 수 있으면 좋겠다는 희망을 품고 있습니다.

to connect that moving footballer

그리고 이 축구선수들이 다시금

to immigrants who also moved in sight of a better position.

더 나은 삶을 향해 이주한 이민자들과 연결되길 바라고 있습니다.

Among these kids, I want to connect their families' histories

저는 아이들의 곁에서, 이 아이들의 가족에 대한 역사를

골을 넣은 선수의 기쁨과 접목시켜주고 싶습니다.

to the bliss of a goal-scorer's run,

family like that feeling after the ball beats the goalie,

골키퍼를 굴복시키고 마침내 골을 넣은 후의 그 감정은

the closest thing going to freedom.

가족들이 마침내 자유에 도달한 그 감격과 가장 가까울 것입니다.
