my own upbringing in music

and family and all of that,

but I'm even more excited for you people

to hear about Donnell's amazing family

도넬의 놀라운 가족에 대해서

and maybe even a little bit about

또 어쩌면 도넬과 제가

how we met,

and all that sort of thing,

but for those of you that may not

be familiar with my upbringing,

I'm from Cape Breton Island,

저는 캐나다 동부 노바 스코티아에 있는

Nova Scotia, eastern Canada,

음악적 전통이 매우 깊은

which is a very, very musical island,

케이프 브레톤 섬에서 태어났지요.

and its origins come from Scotland

그런데 제 고향의 음악과 댄스,

with the music and all the traditions,

언어 같은 모든 전통문화는

the dancing, the language,

스코틀랜드에서 유래한 것인데

which unfortunately is dying out

지금은 불행히도 케이프 브레톤에서

in Cape Breton.

그런 것들이 사라지고 있지요.

The traditional language is Gaelic,

그 곳의 전통어는 게일어이고

but a lot of the music came

많은 음악이 게일어로 부터

from the Gaelic language,

유래했지요.

and the dancing and the singing

그리고 댄스, 노래 그리고

and everything, and my bloodline

제 혈통을 포함한 모든 것이

is Scottish through and through,

머리부터 발끝까지 스코트랜드스럽죠.

but my mother and father

제 어머니와 아버지는

are two very, very musical people.

모두 매우 음악적이세요.

My mom taught me to dance

저의 어머니는 제가 5살때 댄스를

when I was five, and my dad

taught me to play fiddle when I was nine.

제가 9살때 바이올린을 가르켜 주셨어요.

My uncle is a very well-known

제 삼촌은 케이프 브레톤에서

Cape Breton fiddler.

His name's Buddy MacMaster,

제 삼촌의 이름은 버디 맥마스터인데

and just a wonderful guy,

아주 훌륭한 분이세요.

and we have a great tradition at home

제 고향에는 스퀘어 댄싱이라는

called square dancing,

아주 멋있는 전통이 있는데

and we had parties, great parties

우리는 우리집에서, 이웃의 집에서

at our house and the neighbors' houses,

멋있고 재미있는 파티를 하곤 했지요.

and you talk about kitchen cèilidhs.

여러분께서 '키친 케일리'라고

Well, cèilidh first of all is Gaelic for party,

들어보셨는지 모르겠는데

but kitchen party

케일리는 게일어로 파티라는 말인데

in Cape Breton is very common,

케이프 브레톤에서는 키친 케일리(부엌 파티)를 자주하지요.

and basically somebody drops into the house,

케이프 브레톤에 있는

and no matter what house you go to

어떤 집에 가든지

in Cape Breton, there's a fiddle there,

바이올린이 있을꺼예요

guaranteed, and I'd say,

그리고 제가 보장하는데

well there's first of all more fiddlers

아마도 세계 어디에도 인구당

per capita in Cape Breton than anywhere

케이프 브레톤 만큼 바이올린을 켤 줄아는

in the world, so ten chances to one,

사람이 많은 데가 아마 없을 거예요

the fellow who walked in the door

그래서 누가 어떤사람의 집에 가면

could play it, so you'd have someone come

10명중 한명은 바이올린을 연주할 줄

into the house, you'd invite them to play

알것이고, 그러면 사람을 한두명 더 불러서

a tune, and lo and behold

음악을 한두곡 하고

a little party would start up and somebody would dance,

분위기가 흥겨워 지기 시작하며 누구는 춤을 추고

and somebody would sing, and all that sort of thing,

so it was a wonderful, wonderful way

그래서 애들이 자라나기에는 아주

to grow up, and that is where

이상적인 음악적 분위기였지요.

my beginnings in music come from:

저의 음악적인 생활의 시작은

my surroundings, my family,

저의 환경, 저의 가족,

just my bloodline in itself, and, oh,

제 혈통 자체 그런것 이었지요.

I've done lots of things with my music.

저는 음악을 통해 많은 일을 했지요.

I've recorded lots of CDs.

CD도 여러 장 녹음하고

I was nominated for a Grammy and

그래미상 후보에도 올랐었고

I've won some awards and stuff like that,

상도 몇 개 타고 그랬었는데

so that's awesome,

그런 것들도 다 좋았지만

but the best part was meeting my husband,

제일 좋았던 것은 제 남편을 만난 거예요.

and I've actually known Donnell

저는 사실 도넬(남편)을

for probably 12 years now, and

약 12년 정도 알아왔는데

I'm going to get into a little bit of, I guess,

음악을 통해 우리가 어떻게 가까워졌는지

how music brought us together,

말씀드리려고 해요.

but I'm going to introduce you

right now to my new husband

지난 10월 5일에

Donnell Leahy: Thank you. I'm kind of new to the TED

experience and I'm glad to be here,

but I'm just trying to put it all together,

It's kind of boring, but I'll just tell you a little

bit about my family. I'm one of 11 brothers

몇 마디 드릴려고 합니다. 저희 남매는 모두 11명인데

and sisters from Lakefield, Ontario,

우리는 토론토에서 북동쪽으로 약 1시간 반 정도 되는

an hour and a half northeast of Toronto,

온타리오의 레이크필드에 있는,

and we grew up on a farm.

농장에서 자라났지요

Mom and Dad raised beef cattle,

우리의 부모님들은 육용우를 기르셨고

and I'm the oldest boy.

저는 맏아들이지요.

There are four girls a little bit older than me.

저한테는 나이가 약간 더 많은 누이가 4명 있지요.

We grew up without a television.

우리는 텔레비젼이 없이 자랐어요.

People find that strange,

사람들은 그걸 이상하다고 생각하는데

but I think it was a great blessing for us.

저는 그게 큰 행운이었다고 생각합니다.

We had a television for a few years,

사실 텔레비전을 몇 년 갖고 있긴 했는데

but of course we wasted so much time

그걸 보는데 시간만 낭비하고

and the work wasn't getting done,

일도 못하게 되고 그래서

so out went the television.

텔레비젼을 갖다 버렸답니다.

We grew up playing—

우리는 악기를 연주하면서 자랐어요--

Mom's from Cape Breton, coincidentally.

저희 어머니도 케이프 브레톤 출신인데

Mom and Natalie's mother

저희 어머니와 나탈리의 어머니는

knew each other. We grew up playing,

서로 아는 사이여서 우리는 어렸을때 부터

and used to dance together, right, yeah.

같이 놀고 춤을 추며 자라났어요.

(Laughter) We grew up playing a bunch of,

(웃음) 우리는 기분나는 대로

we played by ear and I think

악보 없이 이것 저것 다 연주를 했는데

that's important for us because

우리가 여러 가지 다른 스타일의

we were not really exposed to a lot of

음악을 많이 접하지 않기 때문에

different styles of music.

우리한테는 그게 매우 중요했지요.

We learned to play the instruments,

우리는 악기들을 배울 때 텔레비젼도 없었고

but we kind of had to come from within

라디오도 잘 듣지 않았고 그래서

or go from within, because we didn't

모든 것이 우리들 자신으로부터

watch television, we didn't listen to a lot of

radio. We went to church

우리는 교회도 가고

and to school sometimes,

학교도 가고

and farmed and played music,

농장에서 일도 하고 음악도 만들었지요

so we were able, I think,

at a very critical age to develop

our own style, our own self,

우리들의 고유한 스타일과 개성을

and my mother plays, my father plays,

개발할 수 있었고, 저의 어머니와 아버지

and the style that came

두 분 모두 악기를 연주하시는데

from the Ottawa Valley in Ontario,

온타리오의 오타와 밸리 지역 스타일이죠.

we call it French-Canadian style

우리는 그걸 프랑스-캐나다 스타일이라고 부르지만

but it originated in logging camps.

사실은 벌목캠프에서 유래한 거죠.

Years ago, hundreds of men would go

옛날에는 수백명의 벌목공들이

up for the winter to the camps

북 온타리오와 퀘백에 있는 벌목 캠프로

in Northern Ontario and in Quebec,

올라가서 겨울을 지내곤 했는데

and they were all different cultures,

그들은 모두 문화가 다른 곳에서 왔었지요

and the Irish, the French, Scottish,

아일랜드, 프랑스, 스코틀랜드, 그리고

German, they'd all meet, and of course

독일에서 온 그 벌목공들은

at night, they'd play cards

밤이면 모두 모여서 카드 게임을 하거나

and step dance and play fiddles,

바이올린을 연주하고 스텝 댄스를 했는데

and over the course of many years,

여러 해가 흐르며

the Ottawa Valley fiddling kind of evolved

and the Ottawa Valley step dancing

evolved, so that's, I kind of started out

with that style and I quickly

started doing my own thing,

and then I met Natalie, and I was

That's how we met. (Laughter)

Well I guess I have to now.

Well, it's just so interesting that

도넬의 유년시절이 저와 어쩌면

Donnell's upbringing was very similar

그렇게 비슷한지 너무 재미있어요.

to mine, and I actually saw Donnell play

저는 사실 제가 12살 정도 되었을 때

when I was about 12 years old,

도넬이 연주하는 것을 직접 봤어요.

and he and his family came to

도넬과 그 가족들이

Inverness, which is about 45 minutes

저희 집에서 45분 쯤 걸리는 인버네스로 왔을 때였는데

from where I lived, and I was just

저는 도넬의 연주가 너무너무 좋아서

blown away, like, it was just amazing,

어쩔 줄 모를 정도였어요.

and you'll find out why pretty soon here,

왜 그랬었는지는 좀 있다 알게 되실 거예요.

but I couldn't believe the fiddling

하여튼 도넬의 바이올린 연주가

and Mom was there with me,

기가 막히게 훌륭했어요.

and she was saying —

그때 제 어머니께서 옆에 계셨는데

Donnell's mother came up on stage

도넬의 어머니가 무대 위에 올라오셔서

and danced with her children, and Mom

그녀의 아이들과 춤을 추는 것을 보고

was saying, "That's Julie MacDonnell,

어머니가 "저 사람은 쥴리 맥도넬이네.

I used to dance with her when we

우리 어렸을 때 같이 춤추곤 했어.

were kids. Little did I think our children

그 때는 우리 아이들이

would be playing instruments, you know,

함께 연주하며 음악을 만드리라고는

playing music, yeah."

꿈에도 생각 못했지"라고 말하셨어요.

Twelve years, er, 20 years later little did she think

그 때 어머니는 12년, 어 20년 후에

her kids would be getting married,

그 아이들이 결혼하리라고는 꿈에도...

but anyway, so, then I got

어쨋건, 그 후

a phone call about, I dunno,

약 7년인가 후에

seven years later. I was 19,

그러니까 제가 19살때

first or second year of college,

대학교 1학년인가 2학년때

and it was Donnell, and

도넬한테서 전화를 받았는데

he said "Hi, you probably don't know me

도넬이 "안녕하세요, 혹시 절 모를지 모르지만

but my name is Donnell Leahy."

제 이름은 도넬 레이히예요"라고 하는거예요.

And I said, "I know you.

그래서 저는 "네, 누군지 알아요.

I have a tape of yours at home."

우리집에 당신의 테이프 레코딩이 있어요." 그랬더니

And he said, "Well, I'm in Truro,"

그는 "전 지금 트루로에 있어요"라고 말하며,

which is where I was,

제가 다니던 학교가 트루로에 있거든요,

and he asked me out for supper.

같이 저녁을 하겠냐고 묻는 거예요.

That's it. (Laughter)

그냥 그거예요 (웃음)

Then — Will I keep going? (Laughs)

Then we dated for two years,

그 후 우리는 2년간 데이트하고

broke up for 10, got back together

10개월간 헤어졌다가, 다시 교제하다가

and got married. (Laughter) (Applause)

DL: So anyway, we're running out of time,

DL: 그건 그렇고 시간이 얼마 안남았으니까

so I'll just get to it.

I'm going to play a piece of music for you.

제가 여러분을 위해 선택한 스코틀랜드 곡을

It's actually a Scottish piece I've chosen.

한 곡 들려드리겠습니다.

I starts out with a slow air.

이 음악은 천천히 진행되는 에어로 시작하지요.

Airs were played in Europe

에어는 유럽에서 장례식 때

at burials, as a body was carried out

연주되는데 시신을 빈소에서 장지로

from the wake site to the burial site,

모시고 가는 길에 연주되고,

the procession was led by a piper

그 장례행렬에는 파이프를 부는 사람이나

or a fiddle player.

바이올린 악사가가 앞서 가지요.

I'll quickly play a short part of the air,

이제 에어의 일부를 잠깐 연주해 드린 후

and then I'm going to get into

신나는 선율의 곡을 연주하려고 하는데

kind of a crazy tune that is very difficult

이 곡은 흥이 완전히 나지 않았을 때는

to play when you're not warmed up,

연주하기가 아주 힘들어서

so, if I mess it up, pretend you like it

혹시 제가 엉망으로 연주하더라도

anyway. It's called The Banks.

We're laughing, like, because

our styles are totally different,

And so, you know, Donnell and I

are actually in the process of

writing new pieces of music together

that we can play,

We just started yesterday. (Laughter)

My mom plays piano, and she learned

제 어머니도 피아노를 치시는데

to play before they had a piano at home

제 어머니는 어렸을때

in Cape Breton. Before Mom's family had

집에 피아노가 없어서

a piano in Cape Breton, she learned to play

널판지에 피아노 건반을 그려 놓고

the rhythms on a piece of board,

피아노를 치고

and the fiddlers would all congregate

그 주위에 사람들이 모여

to play on the cold winter's evenings

바이올린을 켜며

and Mom would be banging on this board,

추운 겨울 저녁을 보내곤 했는데

so when they bought a piano,

제 할머니와 할아버지가

they bought it in Toronto and had it taken

동네에서 처음으로 피아노를 사셨는데,

by train and brought in on a horse,

피아노는 토론토에서 기차를 타고,

a horse and sleigh to the house.

마지막에 집까지는 말이 끄는 썰매로

It became the only piano in the region,

운반되어 왔는데요. 피아노가 집에

and Mom said she could basically play

도착하자 마자 어머니는 이미

as soon as the piano arrived,

피아노 리듬을 배웠기 때문에

she could play it because she had learned

피아노를 칠 수 있었다고 하셨어요.

all these rhythms. Anyway, we found

하여튼, 저희들은 작년에

the piano last year and were able to

그 피아노를 다시 찾아서 그걸 사서

bring it back home. We purchased it.

집으로 가져왔는데

It had gone through, like,

그 피아노는 그동안 대여섯

five or six families,

가족을 걸쳐서, 다시 우리 가족으로

and it was just a big thing for us,

돌아온 건데 저희들은 그 피아노를 찾아서

and we found actually an old picture

매우 기뻤고, 우리는 그 피아노에서

of somebody and their family years ago.

어떤 가족의 옛날 사진도 찾았지요.

Anyway, I'm blabbering on here.

여하튼, 제가 지금 횡설수설 하고 있네요.

NM: No, I want you to tell them about Leahy.

NM: 아니예요. 레이히 이야기를 해드려요.

DL: What about Leahy? (Laughter)

DL: 레이히에 대해서 무슨 이야기를? (웃음)

NM: Just tell them what—

NM: 그냥 그거 ...

DL: She wants me to talk about—

DL: 나탈리가 여러분께 ..

We have a band named Leahy.

우리가 레이히라는 밴드를 만들었지요.

There's 11 siblings. We, um—

우리 형제는 총 11명인데..어...

What will I tell them? (Laughter)

We opened—

우리는 ... 에또..

NM: No surgeries.

NM: 병원을 개업한 건 아니고

DL: No surgeries, oh yeah.

DL: 병원은 분명히 아니고 에또..

We had a great opportunity.

우리에게 좋은 기회가 주어졌었어요.

We opened for Shania Twain for two years on her international tour.

우리는 2년간 쉬나이 트웨인의 해외 투어 공연을

It was a big thing for us, and now

같이 했는데 그건 우리한테 큰 경험이었지요.

all my sisters are off having babies

제 형제는 이제 모두 애를 낳거나

and the boys are all getting married, so we're

결혼을 하게 돼서 아마도

staying close to home for, I guess,

앞으로 2주 정도는 집에

another couple of weeks.

붙어있어야 할 것 같아요.

What can I say? I don't know what to say,

나탈리아, 또 무슨 이야기를

Natalie. We, uh... (Laughter)

in my family we had seven girls, four boys,

우리집에는 딸이 7명이고 그리고 아들이 4명

we had two fiddles and one piano,

있었는데 바이올린은 2개 그리고

and of course we were all fighting to play

피아노는 1대 밖에 없어서 우리는 항상

on the instruments, so dad and mom

악기가지고 다투었지요. 그래서 우리 부모님은

set a rule that you couldn't kick anyone

누군가가 일단 연주를 하고 있으면

off the instrument. You had to wait

끝날때 까지 그 악기를 뺏지

until they were finished, so of course,

못한다는 규칙을 세웠는데 그래서

what we would do is we'd get on the piano

누가 일단 피아노를 점령하면

and you wouldn't even get off to eat,

자리를 뺏기지 않으려고

because you wouldn't want to give it up

밥도 안먹고 계속 피아노를 치고

to your brother or sister, and they'd wait

그러면 나머지 애들은

and wait and wait, and it'd be midnight

기다리고 기다려서, 밤 12시가 되었는데

and you'd be still sitting there on the piano,

그래도 자리를 내주지 않는거 있죠?

but it was their way to get us to practice.

그런데 피아노 연습을 하려면 다른 도리가 없었어요.

Will we play a tune?

이제 연주할까요?

NM: It worked. DL: It worked.

NM: 연습했던 보람이 있어요. DL: 네, 그래요.

Sorry, I hate to carry on...

미안하지만,

So this is our last number, and we'll feature Nat on piano.
