This is very strange for me, because I’m not used to doing this:

The previous speaker has, I think,

really painted a very good background as to

제 작업에 깔린 동기, 원동력, 제가 느끼는 상실감

the impulse behind my work and what drives me, and my sense of loss,

그리고 이런 어려운 질문에 대한 해답을 구하고자 하는

and trying to find the answer to the big questions.

제 영화의 배경을 아주 잘 설명해주신 것 같습니다.

But this, for me, I mean, coming here to do this,

하지만 저에게, 음, 여기 와서 이런 걸 하는 건.. 이런 느낌이죠.

feels like -- there’s this sculptor that I like very much, Giacometti,

제가 매우 좋아하는 '쟈코메티'라는 조각가가 있는데요.

who after many years of living in France -- and learning, you know,

프랑스에서 수년간 살고, 배우고, 음, 공부하고 일하고

studying and working -- he returned home and he was asked, what did you produce?

그리고 고향에 돌아갔더니 사람들이 이렇게 물었다고 합니다. 뭘 만들었냐고요.

What have you done with so many years of being away?

집에서 떠나 있는 몇 해 동안 뭘 해왔냐고요.

And he sort of, he showed a handful of figurines.

그래서 쟈코메티는 작은 조각상 몇 개를 사람들한테 보여줬죠.

And obviously they were, "Is this what you spent years doing?

물론 사람들 반응은, "이런 거 하느라 몇 년을 보냈다고요?" 라는 거였습니다.

And we expected huge masterpieces!"

사람들이 기대한 건, 그런 거 있잖아요. 엄청난 대작 같은 거요.

But what struck me is the understanding that in those little pieces

하지만 저에게 감동을 준 부분은 그 작은 조각상 안에는

was the culmination of a man’s life, search, thought, everything --

인생에 대한 탐구, 생각, 모든 것의 정점에 대한 이해가 담겨있다는 점이었죠.

just in a reduced, small version.

그 축소된 작은 형상안에 말이죠.

In a way, I feel like that.

지금 저도 같은 느낌입니다.

I feel like I’m coming home to talk about

20년 동안 나가서 뭘 했는지 얘기하기 위해

what I’ve been away doing for 20 years.

고향에 돌아온 것 같은 느낌이요.

And I will start with a brief taster of what I’ve been about:

그래서 저의 간단한 맛보기 작품으로 시작해보려 합니다.

a handful of films -- nothing much,

영화 몇 편인데요, 대단한 건 아니고요.

two feature films and a handful of short films.

두 편의 장편과 몇 편의 단편 영화입니다.

So, we’ll go with the first piece.

첫 작품부터 가보죠.

I have this feeling I’d be happy there.

totally trying to capture what cinema is for me,

영화가 뭔지를 정말로, 정말로 한 번 기록해보고 싶었던 시도고요.

and where I'm coming from in terms of cinema.

영화를 통해서 고향의 의미를 담고자 했습니다.

The first piece was, really, there's a young woman talking about Nigeria,

첫 번 째 영화에서, 젊은 여성이 나이지리아에 대해 얘기하는 게 나오죠.

that she has a feeling she'll be happy there.

거기 가면 행복할 것 같다고 말하면서요.

These are the sentiments of someone that's been away from home.

이건 고향에서 멀리 떠나온 사람이 느끼는 감정입니다.

And that was something that I went through, you know, and I'm still going through.

제가 거쳐온 감정이기도 하고, 음, 지금도 경험하고 있죠.

I've not been home for quite a while, for about five years now.

저는 꽤 오랫동안 고향에 가보지 못했는데요. 한 5년 정도 됐네요.

I've been away 20 years in total.

다 따져보면 한 20 년 정도 고향을 떠나와 있었어요.

And so it’s really --

그러니까 이건 정말로,

it's really how suddenly, you know, this was made in 1997,

정말로, 음, 갑작스럽게 만들어진 건데요. 1997년에요.

which is the time of Abacha -- the military dictatorship,

아바차의 군사독재 시절이었죠.

the worst part of Nigerian history, this post-colonial history.

So, for this girl to have these dreams

그래서 그 여자아이가 품고 있는 꿈은

is simply how we preserve a sense of what home is.

단순히 우리 모두가 품은 고향에 대한 느낌과 같은 것입니다.

How -- and it's sort of, perhaps romantic, but I think beautiful,

because you just need something to hold on to,

especially in a society where you feel alienated.

Which takes us to the next piece, where the young man

talks about lack of opportunity: living as a black person in Europe,

유럽에 사는 흑인에게는 충분한 기회가 주어지지 않는 현실을 얘기하죠.

the glass ceiling that we all know about, that we all talk about,

다들 아시다시피, 말 그대로 눈에 보이지 않는 장벽같은 거죠.

and his reality.

그리고 되돌아오는 건, 아시다시피, 그의 현실이죠.

Again, this was my -- this was me talking about --

다시 말하지만, 이건, 제가 얘기하려고 했던 건

this was, again, the time of multiculturalism in the United Kingdom,

영국의 다문화주의 시대였던 겁니다.

and there was this buzzword -- and it was trying to say,

잡음이 많았죠. 제가 정말로 얘기하려고 했던 건

what exactly does this multiculturalism mean in the real lives of people?

사람들의 실제 삶에 있어서 다문화주의란 뭘 의미하는가 였습니다.

And what would a child --

어린 아이가,

what does a child like Jamie -- the young boy -- think,

제이미 같은 어린 아이, 어린 소년이 생각하는

I mean, with all this anger that's built up inside of him?

제 말은, 제이미 안에 쌓여진 분노같은 것이

What happens with that?

그런 것 때문에 무슨 일이 벌어지는가 하는 것이었죠.

What, of course, happens with that is violence,

물론 그런 분노로 생기는 것은 폭력이죠.

which we see when we talk about the ghettos

즉, 우리가 빈민가에 대해 얘기할 때 떠올리게 되거나

and we talk about, you know, South Central L.A. and this kind of stuff,

LA 중남부같은 지역에서 볼 수 있는 그런 폭력들이요.

and which eventually, when channeled, becomes,

그런 폭력성은 결국 한 데 모아져서

you know, evolves and manifests itself as riots --

가끔은 폭동으로 발전되어 표출됩니다.

like the one in France two years ago, where I live,

제가 살았던 프랑스에서 2년 전에 벌어진 일 처럼요.

which shocked everybody, because everyone thought, "Oh well,

그일로 모두가 경악했었습니다. 왜냐면 모두들

France is a liberal society."

"어 이런, 프랑스는 자유국가잖아." 라고 생각했거든요.

But I lived in England for 18 years.

전 영국에서 18년 동안 살았습니다.

I've lived in France for about four, and I feel actually

프랑스에서는 4년째 살고 있고요, 사실 저는

thrown back 20 years, living in France.

프랑스에 살면서 20년 정도 전의 과거로 돌아간 것 같아요.

And then, the third piece. The third piece for me is the question:

그리고 세 번째 작품은요, 저에게 이런 질문을 던진 작품이죠.

What is cinema to you? What do you do with cinema?

나에게 영화란 뭔가, 내가 영화로 하려는 것은 무엇인가? 하는 것이죠.

There's a young director, Hollywood director, with his friends --

헐리우드의 젊은 영화 감독이 그의 친구들과 동료 영화제작가들과

fellow filmmakers -- talking about what cinema means.

영화가 뭘 의미하는지 얘기하는 내용입니다.

I suppose that will take me to my last piece --

이 주제는 저의 최근작으로 이어지는데요.

what cinema means for me.

영화가 저에게 어떤 의미인가를 다루었습니다.

My life started as a -- I started life in 1966,

제 삶의 시작은... 전 1966년에 태어났습니다.

a few months before the Biafran, which lasted for three years

and it was three years of war.

One of the themes that comes through very strongly

방금 본 이 작품에서 매우 강렬하게 전달된 주제 중에 하나는

in the piece we just watched is this sense of the psychological trauma of the young

소년병의 역할을 해야 했던 어린 아이들의

that have to play this role of being child soldiers.

심리적 트라우마 감정입니다.

And considering where you are coming from,

나이지리아 출신인 애둬카씨의 입장에서 볼 때,

and when we consider the extent to which it’s not taken as seriously

이 사안이 그 중요성에 비해 심각하게 다뤄지지는 않았는데요.

as it should be, what would you have to say about that?

그 점에 대해서 뭔가 하실 말씀이 있으신가요?

NA: In the process of my research, I actually spent

NA: 답사 과정 중에서, 저는 실제로 시에라 리온에 가서

a bit of time in Sierra Leone researching this.

이에 대해 조사하느라 시간을 보냈습니다.

And I remember I met a lot of child soldiers --

그리고 저는 수많은 소년병을 만난 걸 기억합니다.

ex-combatants, as they like to be called.

그들은 소년병 대신 "과거의 투사"로 불리우길 바라죠.

I met psychosocial workers who worked with them.

그 소년병들을 보살피는 심리사회 치료사도 만났구요.

I met psychiatrists who spent time with them,

소년병들을 치료했던 정신과 의사들,

aid workers, NGOs, the whole lot.

구호단체 직원, NGO분들, 그런 분들을 많이 만났습니다.

But I remember on the flight back on my last trip,

하지만 마지막 여정에서 돌아오는 길에

I remember breaking down in tears and thinking to myself,

이런 생각을 하며 울음을 터뜨리고 말았습니다.

if any kid in the West, in the western world,

만약에 이 아이들이, 서구권의, 서구 세계의 어떤 아이가

went through a day of what any of those kids have gone through,

이 소년병 아이들이 보내는 삶의 하루라도 겪는다면

they will be in therapy for the rest of their natural lives.

그 아이는 아마 평생 동안 치료를 받아야 할 겁니다.

So for me, the thought that we have all these children --

그러니까 제 생각은, 그 아이들 모두가,

it’s a generation, we have a whole generation of children --

한 세대, 그러니까 이 아이들 전체 세대가

who have been put through so much psychological trauma or damage,

엄청난 심리적 트라우마와 상처를 받아왔다는 겁니다.

and Africa has to live with that.

아프리카는 그걸 안고 살아가야 하는 것이죠.

But I’m just saying to factor that in,

하지만 제가 얘기하려는 건 이런 위대한 전진,

factor that in with all this great advancement,

이런 위대한 전진을 선언하는 것에

all this pronouncement of great achievement.

내재된 요소였습니다.

That’s really my thinking.

그게 제가 생각하는 겁니다.
