Quite amazing, quite amazing.

And the life of the architect is also amazing.

You know, as an architect, at 10 o’clock in the morning,

건축가는 오전 10시에는

you need to be a poet, for sure.

시인일 필요가 있습니다.

But at 11,

you must become a humanist,

otherwise you'd lose your direction.

And at noon, you absolutely need to be a builder.

You need to be able to make a building,

because architecture, at the end, is the art of making buildings.

Architecture is the art of making shelter for human beings.

건축은 인류가 살아갈 공간을 만드는 예술입니다.

Period.

And this is not easy at all.

그러나 결코 쉬운 일이 아닙니다.

It's amazing.

놀라운 과정이죠.

Look at this.

Here we are in London,

at the top of the Shard of Glass.

This is a building we completed a few years ago.

Those people are well-trained workers,

and they are assembling the top piece of the tower.

Well, they look like rock climbers.

I mean, they are defying the force of gravity,

We got 30 of those people --

Let's talk about construction.

Adventure, it's adventure in real life,

건설은 모험입니다. 삶에서 체험하는 모험이요.

not adventure in spirit.

마음 속 모험이 아니죠.

This guy there is a deepwater diver.

이 남자는 심해 잠수부입니다.

From rock climbers to deepwater divers.

압벽 등반가였다가 잠수부가 되기도 하죠.

This is in Berlin.

베를린입니다.

After the fall of the Wall in '89,

1989년 베를린 장벽 붕괴 이후

we built this building, connecting East Berlin to West Berlin,

동독과 서독을 잇는 건축물을 만들었습니다.

in Potsdamer Platz.

포츠다머 플라츠에요.

We got on that project almost 5,000 people.

이 프로젝트에는 거의 5000명이 참여했습니다.

Almost 5,000 people.

And this is another site in Japan,

building the Kansai Airport.

Again, all the rock climbers, Japanese ones.

You know, making buildings together

함께 빌딩을 짓는 것은

is the best way to create a sense of cooperation.

협동심을 일으키는 가장 좋은 방법입니다.

The sense of pride -- pride is essential.

자부심도 키워주지요.

But, you know, construction, of course,

공사는 말이죠

is one of the reasons why architecture is amazing.

건축을 경이롭게 하는 이유 중 하나입니다.

But there is another one, that is maybe even more amazing.

이보다 더 놀라운 이유가 또 있습니다.

Because architecture is the art

개개인만이 아니라

of making shelter for communities,

공동체에 안식처를 만들어주는

not just for individuals --

예술이 건축이라는 점입니다.

communities and society at large.

공동체와 사회를 아우르죠.

And society is never the same.

사회는 결코 똑같은 법이 없죠.

The world keeps changing.

세계는 계속 변화 중이고요.

And changes are difficult to swallow by people.

사람들이 그 변화를 받아들이는 건 어렵습니다.

And architecture is a mirror of those changes.

건축은 변화를 비추는 거울이 되어줍니다.

Architecture is the built expression of those changes.

건축물을 통해 변화를 표현해내는 겁니다.

So, this is why it is so difficult,

건축이 어려운 이유가 여기 있죠.

because those changes create adventure.

변화에는 새로운 모험을 요구되고

They create adventure, and architecture is adventure.

건축은 모험이기 때문입니다.

This is the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris,

파리의 퐁피두 센터입니다.

a long time ago.

아주 오래전이죠.

That was back in time, '77.

때는 1977년이었습니다.

This was a spaceship landing in the middle of Paris.

파리 정중앙에 착륙한 우주선처럼 보였습니다.

Together with my friend in adventure, Richard Rogers,

제 친구 리처드 로저스와 함께 우리는 모험을 했습니다.

we were, at the time, young bad boys.

그때는 우리도 젊은 악동들이었어요.

Young, bad boys.

It was really only a few years after May '68.

So it was a rebellion, pure rebellion.

The idea was to make

the proof that cultural buildings should not be intimidating.

They should create a sense of curiosity.

This is the way to create a cultural place.

Curiosity is the beginning of a cultural attitude.

And there's a piazza there, you can see that piazza.

And a piazza is the beginning of urban life.

광장은 도시생활이 시작되는 곳입니다.

A piazza is the place where people meet.

사람들이 만나고

And they mix experience.

경험을 함께 나누고

And they mix ages.

여러 새대가 한데 섞이는 곳이죠.

And, you know, in some way,

이를 통해, 어떤 방식으로

you create the essence of the city.

도시의 본질이 형성됩니다.

And since then, we made, in the office, so many other places for people.

그 후 건축가는 사람들을 위한 장소를 만들기 시작하죠.

Here, in Rome, is a concert hall.

이 곳은 로마의 콘서트장입니다.

Another place for people.

사람들을 위한 장소이죠.

This building inside is actually designed by the sound, you can see.

이 공간은 소리를 중점으로 디자인 되었습니다.

It's flirting with sound.

소리와 함께 장난을 치죠.

And this is the Kansai Airport,

여기는 간사이 공항입니다.

in Japan.

일본이죠.

To make a building, sometimes you need to make an island,

건축물을 설계하는데 때로는 섬을 만들기도 합니다.

and we made the island.

우리는 섬을 만들었죠.

The building is more than one mile long.

이 빌딩의 길이는 1.6km가 넘습니다.

It looks like an immense glider, landing on the ground.

땅에 착륙 중인 거대한 글라이더처럼 보입니다.

And this is in San Francisco.

여기는 샌프란시스코입니다.

Another place for people.

사람을 위한 공간입니다.

This building is the California Academy of Sciences.

캘리포니아 자연사 박물관입니다.

And we planted on that roof --

thousands and thousands of plants that use the humidity of the air,

수천 가지의 식물을 심어 지하수면 대신

instead of pumping water from the water table.

공기의 습기를 받아 식물이 자라도록 했습니다.

The roof is a living roof, actually.

살아있는 지붕이었어요.

And this building was made Platinum LEED.

The LEED is the system to measure, of course,

the sustainability of a building.

So this was also a place for people

여기도 사람을 위한 공간으로

that will stay a long time.

And this is actually New York.

This is the new Whitney,

신 휘트니 미술관입니다.

in the Meatpacking District in New York.

뉴욕의 미트패킹 지역에 있죠.

Well, another flying vessel.

상공을 나는 선박같지요.

Another place for people.

사람들을 위한 공간이지요.

Here we are in Athens, the Niarchos Foundation.

여기는 아테네의 니아르코스 재단입니다.

It's a library,

도서관이고요.

it's an open house, a concert hall

개방된 공간이자 콘서트홀이고

and a big park.

큰 공원이기도 합니다.

This building is also a Platinum LEED building.

LEED 플래티넘 인증 건물이기도 해요.

This building actually captures the sun's energy with that roof.

지붕 위에서 태양열을 집열하는 구조입니다.

But, you know, making a building a place for people is good.

사람들을 위한 공간을 만드는 것은 좋습니다.

Making libraries, making concert halls,

도서관, 콘서트 홀

making universities, making museums is good,

대학, 박물관을 짓는 것은 모두 좋은 일이죠.

because you create a place that's open, accessible.

모두에게 열려있는 접근성 좋은 공간을 만들고

You create a building for a better world, for sure.

건물을 통해 더 좋은 세상을 만들기도 합니다.

But there is something else

그러나 건축을 놀랍게 만드는 데는

that makes architecture amazing, even more.

다른 이유가 또 있습니다.

And this is the fact that

사실은 말이죠.

architecture doesn't just answer to need and necessity,

건축은 필요성에만 응답하는 것이 아니라

but also to desires -- yes, desires -- dreams, aspirations.

열망에 응답합니다. 열망, 꿈, 갈망이요.

This is what architecture does.

건축의 본질이 여기에 있습니다.

Even the most modest hut on earth

세상에서 가장 허름한 오두막도

is not just a roof.

하나의 지붕에 그치지 않습니다.

It's more than a roof.

지붕 이상의 의미를 갖지요.

It's telling a story;

이야기를 담고 있습니다.

it's telling a story about the identity of the people living in that hut.

오두막에 사는 이들의 정체성을 이야기하고 있죠.

Individuals.

개개인의 스토리를요.

Architecture is the art of telling stories.

건축은 스토리 텔링의 예술입니다.

Like this one.

바로 이곳처럼요.

In London: the Shard of Glass.

런던의 더 샤드입니다.

Well, this building is the tallest building in Western Europe.

서유럽에서 가장 높은 건물로

It goes up more than 300 meters in the air, to breathe fresh air.

높이 300m가 넘는 건물은 상공에 솟아 있습니다.

The facets of this building are inclined,

건물을 측면이 기운형태로

and they reflect the sky of London, that is never the same.

건물은 런던의 하늘을 비춥니다. 똑같은 법이 없어요.

After rain, everything becomes bluish.

비가 온 후에는 푸르스름해집니다.

In the sunny evening, everything is red.

화창한 날의 밤에는 건물 전체가 붉은색을 띕니다.

It's something that is difficult to explain.

형언하기 어려운 면이 있습니다.

It's what we call the soul of a building.

On this picture on the left, you have the Menil Collection,

Light is probably one of the most essential materials in architecture.

건축에서 빛 만큼 중요한 재료는 없을 것입니다.

And this is in Amsterdam.

This building is flirting with water.

이 건물은 물과 장난을 칩니다.

And this is my office, on the sea.

여기는 제 사무실입니다. 바다에 있죠.

Well, this is flirting with work.

업무를 주로 합니다.

Actually, we enjoy working there.

즐겁게 일하는 좋은 공간입니다.

And that cable car is the little cable car that goes up to there.

이 작은 케이블카를 타고 올라가야 합니다.

That's "The New York Times" in New York.

뉴욕의 "뉴욕 타임즈" 본사입니다.

Well, this is playing with transparency.

투명함이 두드러진 건물이죠.

Again, the sense of light, the sense of transparency.

빛과 투명성의 감각이 돋보입니다.

On the left here, you have the Magic Lantern in Japan,

왼쪽은 일본의 환등기입니다.

in Ginza, in Tokyo.

도쿄의 긴자에요.

And in the center is a monastery in the forest.

This monastery is playing with the silence and the forest.

And a museum, a science museum.

This is about levitation.

All those buildings have something in common:

it's that something is searching for desire, for dreams.

열망과 꿈을 찾고 있다는 점입니다.

And that's me.

Well, there's not a very good reason to show you this picture.

I'm trying, I'm trying.

You know, one thing is clear: I love sailing, for sure.

물론 저는 보트타는 것을 매우 좋아합니다.

I actually also love designing sailing boats.

세일링 보트를 디자인하는 것도 좋아하죠.

But I love sailing, because sailing is associated with slowness.

보트를 사랑하는 이유는 보트타기가 느림과 연결되어 있어서에요.

And ...

그리고

and silence.

고요함과도요.

And the sense of suspension.

정지되어 있는 느낌.

And there is another thing that this picture says.

이 사진으로 알 수 있는 게 또 하나 있습니다.

It says that I'm Italian.

제가 이탈리아인이라는 사실이죠.

Well, there is very little I can do about that.

This place is for art.

예술을 위한 공간입니다.

Art and nature.

예술과 자연이요.

And those buildings actually flirt with the wind,

건축물은 바람과 함께 어울립니다.

with the trade winds.

무역풍과요.

They have a sound, they have a voice, those buildings.

이 빌딩에는 음과 소리가 있습니다.

I'm showing this because it's about beauty.

아름다움을 보여주고 있습니다.

It's about pure beauty.

순수한 미를요.

And let's talk about beauty for a moment.

아름다움에 대해 잠깐 이야기 해봅시다.

Beauty is like the bird of paradise:

아름다움은 천국의 새와 같아요.

the very moment you try to catch it, it flies away.

잡으려 하는 바로 그 순간 날아가버리죠.

Your arm is too short.

팔이 미처 못 미치는 겁니다.

But beauty is not a frivolous idea.

그러나 아름다움은 시시한 생각이 아닙니다.

It's the opposite.

오히려 반대입니다.

In my native language, that is Italian,

제 모국어인 이탈리아어로

"beautiful" is "bello."

"beautiful"은 "bello"입니다.

In Spanish, "beauty" is "belleza."

스페인어로 "beauty"는 "belleza"입니다.

In Greek, "beautiful" is "kalos."

그리스어로 "beautiful"은 "kalos"이고요.

When you add "agathos," that means "beautiful and good."

"agathos"를 붙이면 "beautiful and good"이 됩니다.

In no one of those languages, "beautiful" just means "beautiful."

어떤 언어에서도 "beautiful"이 "미"만 뜻하는 경우는 없죠.

It also means "good."

"좋은"이라는 의미도 있습니다.

Real beauty is when the invisible

진정한 아름다움은 눈에 보이지 않는 것이

joins the visible, coming on surface.

눈에 보이게 되어 표면으로 드러나죠.

And this doesn't apply only to art or nature.

예술과 자연에만 해당되는 얘기가 아닙니다.

This applies to science, human curiosity, solidarity --

과학, 인간의 호기심, 연대에도 적용됩니다.

that's the reason why you may say,

여러분이 이런 말을 하는 이유이기도 하겠죠.

"This is a beautiful person,"

"아름다운 사람입니다."

"That's a beautiful mind."

"아름다운 마음입니다."

This, this is the beauty that can change people

아름다움은

into better people,

우리의 눈에 새로운 빛을 켜주어

by switching a special light in their eyes.

더 나은 사람이 되도록 변화시킵니다.

And making buildings for this beauty

아름다움을 위해 만든 건물이

makes cities better places to live.

살기 좋은 더 나은 도시를 만듭니다.

And better cities

더 나은 도시가

make better citizens.

더 나은 시민을 만듭니다.

Well, this beauty --

이 아름다움이

this universal beauty, I should say --

이 보편적인 아름다움이

is one of the few things that can change the world.

몇 가지 안되는 세상을 바꿀 힘입니다.

Believe me, this beauty will save the world.

정말로 미가 세상을 바꿀 것입니다.

One person at a time, but it will do it.
