When I was young,

It was all special,

it was all the spotlight,

and I just knew that it was for me.

But somewhere along my journey,

life happened.

I have a disease called vitiligo.

私は「白斑」という病気に罹っています

It started early in my career.

仕事を始めて まもなく発症しました

It's an autoimmune disorder.

自己免疫疾患のひとつで

It's where it looks like your skin is getting white patches,

皮膚に白い斑点が できているように見えますが

but it's actually void of color.

でも 実際には色がないのです

It affects all ethnicities,

白斑は あらゆる人種

it affects all ages,

あらゆる年代

all genders,

性別を問わず 起きます

it's not contagious,

伝染病ではなく

it's not life-threatening,

命を脅かすものではありません

but it is mental warfare.

でも 精神的な戦いです

It's tough.

キツイです

Now, I was diagnosed with this disease

この病気と診断されたとき

when I was working on "Eyewitness News" in New York City.

ニューヨークで「アイウィットネス･ ニュース」の仕事に就いていました

I was in the biggest city in the country,

アメリカ国内で最大の都市にある

I was on their flagship station

民放のキー局で

and I was on their top-rated 5pm newscast.

夕方５時の人気ニュース番組を 担当していました

And the doctor looked me right in the eye and said,

医者は 私の目を見て言いました

"You have a disease called vitiligo.

「君は白斑という病気に罹っているね

It's a skin disorder where you lose your pigment.

皮膚の病気で 色素が抜けてしまうんだ

There is no cure, but there a-la-la-la-la".

完治の方法はないが ムニャ ムニャ...

Charlie Brown's teacher.

チャーリー･ブラウンの先生状態で

(Laughter)

He said there is no cure. All I heard was, "My career is over."

「完治する方法がない」の後は何も耳に入らず 「私のキャリアは終わった」と思いました

But I just couldn't give up.

でも 諦め切れませんでした

I couldn't quit,

辞められませんでした

because we put too much into this.

なぜなら 私たちは この仕事に入れ込んでいたからです

And by "we" I mean Mr. Moss,

「私たち」と言うのは

私を居残りさせる代わりに 演劇クラブに行かせてくれたモス先生

who sent me to speech and drama club instead of to detention,

or my sister who paid part of my college expenses,

or my mom,

who simply gave me everything.

私に全てを与えてくれた人です

I would not quit.

私は 辞めるもんかと思いました

So I decided to just put on makeup and keep it moving.

I had to wear makeup anyway. It's TV, baby, right?

どのみちメイクは必要なんです だってテレビだもんね

I just put on a little more makeup, and everything's cool.

ちょっと厚めにメイクをすれば 万事順調でした

And that actually went very well for years.

実際 これで何年間は うまくいきました

I went from being a reporter in New York City

ニューヨークでのリポーターから

to being a morning show anchor in Detroit,

自動車の街 デトロイトでは

the Motor City.

朝の番組の司会も務めました

And as the disease got worse,

白斑が悪化するにつれて

I just put on more makeup.

さらに厚いメイクをしました

It was easy.

簡単でした

Except for my hands.

でも 手は例外でした

See, this disease is progressive and ever-changing.

この病気は進行性で 常に変化します

That means it comes and goes.

現れたり消えたりするわけです

At one point, for about a year and a half,

ある時 １年半くらいの間

my face was completely white.

私の顔は 完全に真っ白でした

Yeah, it trips me out too.

Yeah.

And then, with a little help,

some of the pigment came back,

but living through this process

was like two sides of a coin.

When I'm at work and I'm wearing the makeup

or wearing the makeup outside, I'm the TV guy.

"Hey, how you doing everybody? Great."

At home without the makeup,

家ではメイクをしません

I'd take it off and it was like being a leper.

メイクを落とすと ハンセン病患者になったようでした

The stares, constantly staring at me,

常に じろじろ見られ

the comments under their breath.

ひそひそ話をされます

Some people refused to shake my hand.

私と握手するのを拒む人もいました

Some people moved to the other side of the sidewalk,

歩道の反対側に 移動する人や

moved to the other side of the elevator.

エレベーターの反対側に 移動する人もいました

I felt like they were moving to the other side of life.

まるで彼らが人生の反対側に 移動しているような気がしました

It was tough,

辛かったです

and those were some tough years.

あの頃は 本当に辛かったです

And honestly,

正直に言うと

sometimes I just had to shelter in place.

時々 避難しなければなりませんでした

You know what I mean?

どういう意味か分かりますか？

Kind of just stay at home till I get my mind right.

気持ちが落ち着くまで 家にいるんです

But then I'd put my blinders back on,

でも 再び現実から目を背け

I'd get back out there,

また外に出て

do my thing,

but in the process of doing that,

でも そうしている間も

I developed this --

このような

angry, grumpy demeanor.

怒りや不機嫌な態度が 現れました

Anger is an easy go-to,

怒りに任せるのは簡単で

and people would leave me alone,

人は私をそっとしておいてくれます

but it just wasn't me.

でも それは私じゃないんです

It wasn't me.

私はそんなんじゃないんです

I was allowing this disease to turn me into this angry, grumpy, spotted guy.

私は病気に甘んじて 怒りっぽくて不機嫌な 斑点のある男になってしまったのです

It just wasn't me.

自分らしくありませんでした

So I had to change.

私は変わる必要がありました

I knew I could not change other people.

他人を変えることは出来ないと 分かっていました

People are going to react and do what they gonna do.

人は勝手に反応して 行動するものです

But there was a cold hard reality as well.

でも そこには 冷たくて厳しい現実もありました

I was the one

怒りや悲しみをあらわにして

that was showing anger, sadness

孤立していたのは

私自身だったのです

and isolating myself.

It was actually a choice.

実は 私が選択していたのです

I was walking out the door every day

毎日 外に出かけるとき

expecting the world to react with negativity,

世間がネガティブに反応することを 期待していたので

so I just gave them that mean face first.

自分が先に意地悪な顔をしていたのです

If I wanted change, the change had to start with me.

変化を望むなら 私から変化を起こさなければなりません

So I came up with a plan.

そこで計画を立てました

Two-parter, not that deep.

２部作で そんなに深い意味はありません

Number one: I would just let people stare,

第１部：人がじろじろ見ても放っておく

drink it in, stare all you want,

好きなだけ堪能してもらう

and not react.

それに対して反応しない

Because the truth is when I got this disease,

というのも 実は この病気に罹ったとき

I was all up in the mirror staring at every new spot

私自身 鏡の中で 新しい斑点を隅々まで見て

trying to figure out what is going on.

何が起こっているのかを 理解しようとしていたのです

So I needed to let other people have that same opportunity

だから他の人にも同じ機会を与えて

to get that visual understanding.

視覚的に理解してもらう 必要があると考えました

Number two:

第２部：

I would react with positivity,

ポジティブな気持ちで反応すること

and that was simply a smile,

ただ微笑むか

or, at the very least,

最低でも

a nonjudgmental, kind face.

批判的でない 寛容な顔をします

Simple plan.

簡単な計画です

But it turned out to be more difficult than I thought.

でも 思ったよりも 難しいことでした

But over time,

でも 時が経つにつれて

things started to go OK.

うまく行き始めました

Like this one time, I'm at the store and this dude is like staring at me,

ある時 店の中で じろじろ見てくる男がいて

like burning a hole in the side of my head.

私の側頭部を 穴が開くほど見ていました

I'm shopping, he's staring at me,

店内を物色していると じろじろ

I'm going to the checkout, he's staring at me,

レジに行こうとしても じろじろ

I'm checking out, he's on the other line checking out, he's staring at me,

支払いをしていても 彼は別のレジに並んで じろじろ

出口に向かっても まだじろじろ見ています

we go to the exit, he's still staring at me,

so I see he's staring

彼がまだ見ているのが分かったので

and finally I turn to him and I go, "Hey buddy, what's up!"

ついに振り返って 彼に言いました 「やぁ 君 調子はどうだい？」

And he goes ...

彼は・・・

(Mumbles nervously) "Hi!"

（焦ってブツブツ）「やぁ！」

(Laughter)

（笑）

Awkward.

気まずい

So to relieve the tension, I say,

だから 緊張をほぐすために こう言いました

"It's just a skin disorder.

「ただの皮膚病だよ

It's not contagious, it's not life-threatening,

伝染病じゃないし 命を脅かすものじゃないんだ

it just makes me look a little different."

ちょっと変わって見えるだけさ」

I end up talking to that guy for like five minutes.

その男と５分くらい話しました

It was kind of cool, right?

なんかいいですよね？

And at the end of our conversation, he says,

話の終わりに 彼はこう言いました

"You know, if you didn't have 'vitilargo'" --

「もしアンタがハクハンじゃなかったらー

it's actually vitiligo, but he was trying, so --

彼は正しく白斑と 言えていませんでしたが―

(Laughter)

（笑）

"if you didn't have vitilargo, you'd look just like that guy on TV."

「もしアンタがハクハンじゃなかったら テレビのあの人にソックリだよ」

(Laughter)

（笑）

And I was like, "Haha, yeah, I get that, I get that, yeah."

それで私は 「ハハハ だよね だよね」

(Laughter)

（笑）

So things were going OK.

順調にいっていました

I was having more good exchanges than bad,

悪いやり取りよりも 良好なやり取りを多くしていました

until that day.

あの日までは・・・

I had a little time before work

仕事前に 少し時間があり

so I like to stop by the park to watch the kids play.

公園に寄って 子供たちが 遊ぶのを見るのが好きなんです

They're funny.

子供は面白いですからね

So I got a little too close, this little girl wasn't paying attention,

私は 少し近付きすぎたのですが この少女は私に気付いていませんでした

she's about two or three years old,

２、３歳の少女です

she's running, she runs directly into my leg and falls down, pretty hard.

走ってきて 私の脚に正面衝突し かなり派手に転びました

I thought she hurt herself,

私は 彼女がケガしたのではないかと思い

so I reach out to try and help the little girl

助けようと手を差し伸べたところ

and she looks at my vitiligo

彼女は 私の白斑を見て

and she screams!

悲鳴をあげたのです！

Now kids are pure honesty.

子供は 純粋で正直です

She's like two or three.

彼女は２、３歳です

This little girl, she wasn't trying to be mean.

この少女は 私に 意地悪しようとしたわけではありません

She didn't have any malice in her heart.

彼女の心に 悪意はありませんでした

This little girl was afraid.

この少女は怖かったのです

She was just afraid.

ただ怖かっただけです

I didn't know what to do.

私はどうすべきか分からず

I just took a step back and put my hands by my side.

ただ 一歩下がって 両手を引っ込めました

I stayed in the house for two weeks and three days on that one.

この件で ２週間と３日 私は 家に引きこもりました

It took me a second to get my mind around the fact

小さな子供を怖がらせてしまう という事実は

that I scare small children.

すぐに分かりました

And that was something that I could not smile away.

そして このことを笑顔で吹き飛ばすことは できませんでした

But I jumped back on my plan

でも 私は計画に戻って

and just put on my blinders,

現実から目を背けて

started going back out.

また外に出始めました

Two months later, I'm in a grocery store reaching on the bottom shelf,

２ヶ月後 食料品店で 下の棚に手を伸ばしていると

and I hear a little voice go, "You've got a boo-boo?"

小さな声が聞こえてきました 「ブーブーができたの？」

It's like a two-year-old, three-year-old, same age, little girl,

同じく２、３歳の少女でした

but she's not crying,

でも 彼女は泣いていません

so I kneel down in front of her

そこで 私は彼女の前に跪き

and I don't speak two-year-old so I look up at the mom,

２歳児の言葉が分からないので 母親を見上げて聞きました

and I say, "What did she say?"

「彼女はなんて言ったの？」

And she says, "She thinks you have a boo-boo."

「この子は あなたがケガをしている と思っているのよ」と母親は言いました

So I go, "No, I don't have a boo-boo, no, not at all."

それで私は言いました 「違うよ ケガなんて全然してないよ」

And the little girl says,

すると少女は言いました

"Duh-duh-hoy?"

「ダー・ダー・ホイ？」

And so I look to mom for the translation,

私は意味を聞こうと母親を見ます

and she says,

母親は言います

"She thinks you're hurt."

「この子はあなたが痛がっている と思っているのよ」

And I say, "No, sweetie, I'm not hurt at all, I'm fine."

私は「違うよ 全く痛くなんかないよ 大丈夫だよ」

And the little girl reaches out with that little hand

すると 少女は小さな手を伸ばして

and touches my face.

私の顔に触れたのです

She's trying to rub the chocolate into the vanilla

彼女は バニラにチョコレートを 擦りこもうとしていたのか

or whatever she was doing.

何をしようとしていたのか

It was amazing!

素晴らしい気分でした！

It was awesome.

最高の気分でした！

Because she thought she knew what it was,

なぜなら 彼女は 私が欲しいものを分かっていて

she was giving me everything I wanted:

その全てを与えてくれたからです

kindness, compassion.

「優しさ」と「思いやり」です

And with the touch of that little hand,

その小さな手の感触で

she healed a grown man's pain.

彼女は 大人の男の痛みを癒したのです

Yee-ha.

わーい やったー

Healed.

癒されました

I smiled for a long time on that one.

この出来事で しばらくの間 笑顔になりました

Positivity is something worth fighting for,

ポジティブな気持ちは 戦って勝ち取る価値のあるものです

and the fight is not with others --

他人との戦いではなく

it's internal.

内面との戦いです

If you want to make positive changes in your life,

自分の人生に ポジティブな変化をもたらしたいなら

you have to consistently be positive.

どんな時でも Be positive （プラス思考）でなければなりません

My blood type is actually B positive.

実際 私の血液型は B positive（Bプラス）なんです

(Laughter)

（笑）

I know, corny TV guy dad joke,

くだらないテレビ男の親父ギャグで

my daughter hates it, but I don't care!

娘も嫌がってるけど 気にしない！

Be positive!

Be positive!

(Laughs)

（笑）

A 14-year-old boy years ago --

数年前 ある14歳の少年が ―

this kid had vitiligo --

この子も白斑を患っていて ―

he asked me to show my face on television.

彼は私に テレビで顔を見せるよう 頼んできました

I wasn't going to do it,

やるつもりはありませんでした

we've been over this, I thought I was going to lose my job,

もう乗り越えたことだし 仕事を失うと思ったのです

but the kid convinced me by saying,

でも その子はこう説得してきました

"If you show people what you look like and explain this to them,

「もし あなたが自分の姿を見せて みんなに説明してくれたら

maybe they will treat me differently."

もしかしたら みんなの僕に対する扱いが 変わるかもしれない」

Boom! Blinders off.

ドカーン！ 隠すのをやめて

I did a TV report,

テレビで報道したところ

got an overwhelming response.

たいへんな反響がありました

So I didn't know what to do.

どうしていいか分からず

I took the attention and focused it back on the kid

その少年や 他の白斑の人々に

and other people that have vitiligo.

注意を戻しました

I started a support group.

私は 支援団体を立ち上げました

Pretty soon, we noticed "VITFriends"

間もなくして 支援団体の

「VITFriends」や「V-Strong」が 全国に広がっていることがわかりました

and "V-Strong" support groups all over the country.

In 2016, we all came together and celebrated World Vitiligo Day.

2016年に 私たちはみんなで集まって 世界白斑デーを祝いました

This past June 25,

今年の6月25日にも

we had over 300 people,

300名以上の人々が集まり

all in celebration of our annual event.

みんなで 年に１度のイベントを祝いました

It was amazing.

Now, I'm not going to lie to you

and say it was quick or easy

for me to find a positive place living with this disease,

すぐに簡単にできたと

嘘をつくつもりはありません

but I found it.

でも 私は見つけました

But I also got much more.

また それ以上のモノも手に入れました

I became a better man,

私は より良い人間になりました

the man I always wanted to be,

ずっとなりたいと思っていた人間にです

the kind of guy who can stand up in front of a room full of strangers

知らない人でいっぱいの部屋で 前に立ち

and tell some of the toughest stories in his life

人生でもっとも辛かった話をして

and end it all with a smile,

最後は笑顔で締めくくり

and find happiness in the fact that you all just smiled back.

みんなが微笑み返してくれたことに 幸せを感じる そんな人間です
