When I was young,

It was all special,

it was all the spotlight,

and I just knew that it was for me.

But somewhere along my journey,

life happened.

I have a disease called vitiligo.

It started early in my career.

제가 일을 시작한 초창기에 시작되었죠.

It's an autoimmune disorder.

자가면역 장애의 일종이죠.

It's where it looks like your skin is getting white patches,

피부에 하얀 무늬가 얼룩덜룩하게 있는 것처럼 보이는 것인데,

but it's actually void of color.

실제로는 색깔이 없는 것입니다.

It affects all ethnicities,

이 병은 모든 인종이 걸릴 수 있고,

it affects all ages,

모든 연령대,

all genders,

모든 성별에서 나타나죠.

it's not contagious,

전염성이 있지는 않고 죽을 병도 아니에요.

it's not life-threatening,

but it is mental warfare.

하지만 정신적 고통이 따르고,

It's tough.

그건 매우 힘듭니다.

Now, I was diagnosed with this disease

제가 그 병을 진단받은 것은 바로

when I was working on "Eyewitness News" in New York City.

뉴욕에서 "목격자 뉴스"를 진행하던 때였어요.

I was in the biggest city in the country,

저는 전국에서 가장 큰 도시에 있었고,

I was on their flagship station

주력 방송국에서 일했죠.

and I was on their top-rated 5pm newscast.

And the doctor looked me right in the eye and said,

"You have a disease called vitiligo.

"백반증이라는 병에 걸리셨어요.

It's a skin disorder where you lose your pigment.

피부의 색소가 없어지는 질환이죠.

There is no cure, but there a-la-la-la-la".

치료법은 없습니다. 하지만, 어쩌고 저쩌고."

Charlie Brown's teacher.

찰리 브라운네 선생님처럼요.

(Laughter)

He said there is no cure. All I heard was, "My career is over."

치료법이 없다는 말이 제게는 "직장생활은 끝입니다"고 들렸죠.

But I just couldn't give up.

하지만 전 포기할 수 없었죠.

I couldn't quit,

저는 관둘 수 없었죠.

because we put too much into this.

우리가 투자를 너무 많이 했으니까요.

And by "we" I mean Mr. Moss,

여기서 "우리"라고 하면,

벌 대신에 웅변, 연극 클럽에 보내셨던 모스 선생님,

who sent me to speech and drama club instead of to detention,

or my sister who paid part of my college expenses,

저의 대학 등록금 일부를 지원해준 저희 누나,

or my mom,

그리고 어머니,

who simply gave me everything.

제게 모든 것을 주셨죠.

I would not quit.

전 관둘 수 없었어요.

So I decided to just put on makeup and keep it moving.

저는 분장을 하고 계속 방송을 했습니다.

I had to wear makeup anyway. It's TV, baby, right?

어차피 분장은 해야 했으니까요. TV에 나오는 거니깐, 당연하죠?

I just put on a little more makeup, and everything's cool.

그저 분장을 좀 더 두껍게 했죠. 모든 것은 잘 진행되었죠.

And that actually went very well for years.

몇 년 동안이나 잘 지내왔습니다.

I went from being a reporter in New York City

뉴욕 시에서 리포터를 하다가

to being a morning show anchor in Detroit,

자동차의 도시 디트로이트에서 아침 프로그램의 앵커로 옮겨 갔죠.

the Motor City.

And as the disease got worse,

백반증 증세가 더 심해지면서,

I just put on more makeup.

저는 분장을 더 두껍게 했습니다.

It was easy.

Except for my hands.

손만 제외하면요.

See, this disease is progressive and ever-changing.

백반증은 여전히 진행 중이고 시시각각 변화중이에요.

That means it comes and goes.

증세가 심했다가 없어졌다가 그러죠.

At one point, for about a year and a half,

한 때, 거의 1년 반 동안

my face was completely white.

제 얼굴은 완전히 하얗게 되었습니다.

Yeah, it trips me out too.

저도 놀랬죠.

(Laughter)

Yeah.

And then, with a little help,

some of the pigment came back,

but living through this process

was like two sides of a coin.

When I'm at work and I'm wearing the makeup

or wearing the makeup outside, I'm the TV guy.

저는 TV 에 나오는 사람이었죠. "안녕하세요. 어떠세요? 좋습니다."

"Hey, how you doing everybody? Great."

At home without the makeup,

븐장을 하지 않고 집에 있을 때는 마치 나환자 처럼 느껴졌죠.

I'd take it off and it was like being a leper.

The stares, constantly staring at me,

저를 계속해서 빤히 쳐다보고 있는 눈길

the comments under their breath.

그들의 수군거리며 하는 말들.

Some people refused to shake my hand.

어떤 사람은 저와 악수하기를 거부했어요.

Some people moved to the other side of the sidewalk,

어떤 사람은 보도의 건너편으로 옮겨가기도 하고,

moved to the other side of the elevator.

엘이베이터 안에서 거리를 두기도 했죠.

I felt like they were moving to the other side of life.

그 사람들이 마치 인생의 건너편으로 피하는 것 처럼 느껴졌습니다.

It was tough,

힘들었습니다.

and those were some tough years.

몇 년간 정말 힘들었죠.

And honestly,

솔직히,

sometimes I just had to shelter in place.

때때로 저는 은신처에 몸을 숨겨야 했습니다.

You know what I mean?

제 마음이 가라 앉을 때까지 그냥 집에 쳐박혀 있는 거죠.

Kind of just stay at home till I get my mind right.

But then I'd put my blinders back on,

I'd get back out there,

밖으로 나가서

do my thing,

제 할 일을 하죠.

but in the process of doing that,

하지만 이런 과정을 겪으면서

I developed this --

제게는 분노와

angry, grumpy demeanor.

짜증부리는 태도가 생겼어요.

Anger is an easy go-to,

분노는 쉽게 찾아왔고,

and people would leave me alone,

사람들은 저를 홀로 내버려 두었죠.

but it just wasn't me.

하지만 그건 제가 아니었어요.

It wasn't me.

제가 아니었어요.

I was allowing this disease to turn me into this angry, grumpy, spotted guy.

저는 화내고, 짜증을 부리는 점박이가 되도록 두었어요.

It just wasn't me.

그건 제가 아니었어요.

So I had to change.

그래서 전 바꿔야 했어요.

I knew I could not change other people.

다른 사람을 바꿀 순 없다는 걸 알고 있었어요.

People are going to react and do what they gonna do.

사람들은 그저 반응하고, 자기 일을 할 뿐이죠.

But there was a cold hard reality as well.

하지만 냉정하고 힘겨운 현실도 있습니다.

I was the one

저는 분노와 슬픔을 표출하고 있었고,

that was showing anger, sadness

and isolating myself.

제 자신을 고립시키고 있었죠.

It was actually a choice.

그건 제 선택이었어요.

I was walking out the door every day

저는 매일 아침 문을 나섰습니다.

expecting the world to react with negativity,

세상이 부정적으로 반응할 것이라 기대하면서요.

so I just gave them that mean face first.

그래서 저는 험상궂은 표정을 짓고 있었죠.

If I wanted change, the change had to start with me.

만약 제가 변화를 원한다면, 제가 먼저 시작해야 했습니다.

So I came up with a plan.

그래서 계획을 세웠죠.

Two-parter, not that deep.

두 가지 계획입니다. 심오한 건 아니고요.

Number one: I would just let people stare,

첫째, 사람들이 저를 응시하게 그냥 내버려두는 것입니다.

drink it in, stare all you want,

넋을 읽고 보고, 보고 싶은 만큼 다 보도록 하고

and not react.

반응하지 않는 거죠.

Because the truth is when I got this disease,

사실 제가 백반증에 걸렸을 때,

I was all up in the mirror staring at every new spot

저도 거울 앞에 서서 새로 생긴 점을 하나 하나 바라봤어요.

trying to figure out what is going on.

무슨 상황인지를 파악하려고요.

So I needed to let other people have that same opportunity

다른 사람들도 그런 경험을 하게 둘 필요가 있었어요.

to get that visual understanding.

잘 보고 이해할 시간을 갖도록요.

Number two:

두 번째 계획입니다.

I would react with positivity,

저는 긍정적으로 반응하기로 했죠.

and that was simply a smile,

간단하게 미소를 짓거나,

or, at the very least,

혹은 최소한

a nonjudgmental, kind face.

비판적이지 않은, 친철한 표정을 하는 것이었습니다.

Simple plan.

간단한 계획이죠.

But it turned out to be more difficult than I thought.

그런데 생각보다 훨씬 더 어려웠죠.

But over time,

하지만 시간이 지나면서,

things started to go OK.

상황은 괜찮아지기 시작했어요.

Like this one time, I'm at the store and this dude is like staring at me,

한 예로, 한 번은 가게에 갔는데 어떤 남자가 저를 쳐다봤습니다.

like burning a hole in the side of my head.

제 머리 한쪽에 구멍이 날 정도였죠.

I'm shopping, he's staring at me,

쇼핑 중인 저를 계속 쳐다봤죠. 계산하려고 할때도 저를 계속 쳐다봤고

I'm going to the checkout, he's staring at me,

계산하고 있을 때, 그는 다른 줄에서 계산하면서도 저를 계속 쳐다봤죠.

I'm checking out, he's on the other line checking out, he's staring at me,

나가는 길에도 그는 여전히 저를 쳐다봤죠.

we go to the exit, he's still staring at me,

so I see he's staring

그가 쳐다본다는 걸 알게 되었고,

and finally I turn to him and I go, "Hey buddy, what's up!"

저는 드디어 그에게로 다가가 "안녕하세요!" 라고 했죠.

And he goes ...

그리고 그는 말했죠.

(Mumbles nervously) "Hi!"

(긴장하여 중얼거리듯) "아, 네, 안녕하세요."

(Laughter)

(웃음)

Awkward.

어색한 순간이었죠.

So to relieve the tension, I say,

긴장감을 완화시키려고, 저는 말했죠.

"It's just a skin disorder.

"이거 그냥 피부 장애예요.

It's not contagious, it's not life-threatening,

전염성도 없고 생명에 위협적이지도 않아요.

it just makes me look a little different."

그냥 제가 좀 달라 보일 뿐이죠."

I end up talking to that guy for like five minutes.

결국 저는 그 분과 5분 정도 대화를 하게 되었죠.

It was kind of cool, right?

꽤 멋지지 않나요?

And at the end of our conversation, he says,

대화가 끝날 때쯤 그는 말했습니다.

"You know, if you didn't have 'vitilargo'" --

"사실, 당신이 '백번증'에 걸리지 않았다면,"

it's actually vitiligo, but he was trying, so --

사실 "백-반-증"인데, 그래도 좋은 시도였죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

"if you didn't have vitilargo, you'd look just like that guy on TV."

"당신이 백번증에 걸리지 않았다면 TV에 나오는 사람이랑 똑같을텐데요."

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And I was like, "Haha, yeah, I get that, I get that, yeah."

"하하. 네. 그런 말 많이 듣죠. 정말 많이 들어요."

(Laughter)

(웃음)

So things were going OK.

그래서 상황은 나쁘지 않았어요.

I was having more good exchanges than bad,

저는 나쁜 대화보다는 좋은 대화를 더 많이 나눴어요.

until that day.

그날이 오기 전까지는요.

I had a little time before work

일하기 전에 시간이 좀 있어서

so I like to stop by the park to watch the kids play.

아이들이 노는 것을 보려고 공원을 들렀어요.

They're funny.

아이들은 재미있게 놀죠.

So I got a little too close, this little girl wasn't paying attention,

제가 좀 지나치게 가까이 다가갔고 어린 소녀는 주의를 기울이지 않았죠.

she's about two or three years old,

그녀는 두세 살 정도였고,

달리다가, 제 다리 쪽으로 달려와서 넘어졌어요. 좀 세게요.

she's running, she runs directly into my leg and falls down, pretty hard.

I thought she hurt herself,

저는 그 애가 다쳤다고 생각해서

도와주려고 손을 뻗었는데

so I reach out to try and help the little girl

and she looks at my vitiligo

백반증에 걸린 제 피부를 보고

and she screams!

비명을 질렀어요!

Now kids are pure honesty.

아이들은 정말 솔직하죠.

She's like two or three.

그 애는 두세 살 정도였으니까,

This little girl, she wasn't trying to be mean.

제게 못되게 굴려고 그런 것도 아니었어요.

She didn't have any malice in her heart.

악의를 가지고 있는 것도 아니었고요.

This little girl was afraid.

그 어린 소녀는 두려웠을 뿐이죠.

She was just afraid.

단지 두려웠죠.

I didn't know what to do.

전 뭘 해야 할지 몰랐죠.

I just took a step back and put my hands by my side.

저는 한 걸음 뒤로 물러서서 손을 제 쪽에 두었죠.

I stayed in the house for two weeks and three days on that one.

그 일 때문에 저는 2주하고 3일씩이나 집에서 머물렀습니다.

It took me a second to get my mind around the fact

제가 아이들에게 겁을 준다는 사실을 인정하는 데는 얼마 걸리지 않았죠.

that I scare small children.

And that was something that I could not smile away.

그냥 웃고 넘길 수는 없는 일이었어요.

But I jumped back on my plan

그래서 전 다시 계획으로 돌아갔고

and just put on my blinders,

눈가리개를 쓰고

started going back out.

다시 밖으로 나가기 시작했죠.

Two months later, I'm in a grocery store reaching on the bottom shelf,

2달 후에, 저는 식료품 가게에서 맨 아래 선반에 손을 뻗었고,

and I hear a little voice go, "You've got a boo-boo?"

작은 목소리가 말했어요. "아저씨 아야했어요?"

It's like a two-year-old, three-year-old, same age, little girl,

두세 살 정도의 비슷한 나이로 보이는 어린 소녀였어요.

but she's not crying,

그 애는 울지 않았어요.

so I kneel down in front of her

저는 그 앞에서 무릎을 꿇었죠.

and I don't speak two-year-old so I look up at the mom,

저는 두 살짜리의 언어는 잘 몰라서 그 애의 엄마에게 물었죠.

and I say, "What did she say?"

"얘가 뭐라고 한 거죠?"

And she says, "She thinks you have a boo-boo."

"손에 상처가 있다고 생각하나봐요."

So I go, "No, I don't have a boo-boo, no, not at all."

"아뇨. 전혀요. 상처난 게 아니에요" 라고 저는 대답했죠.

And the little girl says,

그 어린 소녀는 말했죠.

"Duh-duh-hoy?"

"아야 했어요?"

And so I look to mom for the translation,

통역해달라고 어머니를 바라봤죠.

and she says,

그녀가 말하길,

"She thinks you're hurt."

"아프다고 생각하나봐요."

And I say, "No, sweetie, I'm not hurt at all, I'm fine."

저는 말했죠. "아니야, 얘야, 아프지 않아. 나 괜찮아."

And the little girl reaches out with that little hand

그 어린 소녀는 그 작은 손을 뻗어서

and touches my face.

제 얼굴을 만져줬어요.

She's trying to rub the chocolate into the vanilla

초콜렛을 문질러 바닐라와 섞으려고 노력하는 것처럼

or whatever she was doing.

혹은 그런 비슷한 것처럼요.

It was amazing!

그건 놀라웠어요!

(웃음)

It was awesome.

그건 정말 멋졌어요.

(웃음)

Because she thought she knew what it was,

그 애는 그게 뭔지 알고 있다고 생각해서

she was giving me everything I wanted:

제가 원하던 것을 모두 주었죠.

kindness, compassion.

친절함, 동정심.

And with the touch of that little hand,

그 작은 손의 터치로,

she healed a grown man's pain.

어른의 고통을 치유해주었어요.

Yee-ha.

야호.

Healed.

치유되었어요.

I smiled for a long time on that one.

그 일로 인해 저는 오랫동안 미소를 지었습니다.

Positivity is something worth fighting for,

긍정은 싸워서 얻을 만한 가치가 있어요.

and the fight is not with others --

그 싸움은 외적인 것이 아닙니다. 내적인 것입니다.

it's internal.

If you want to make positive changes in your life,

여러분 인생에서 긍정적 변화를 만들고 싶다면,

you have to consistently be positive.

지속적으로 긍정적이어야 합니다.

My blood type is actually B positive.

사실 저의 혈액형은 긍정적인 B형이거든요.

(Laughter)

I know, corny TV guy dad joke,

네 알아요. 진부한 아재개그죠.

my daughter hates it, but I don't care!

제 딸은 싫어하지만, 전 상관없어요.

Be positive!

긍정적인 B형이 되어라!

(Laughs)

(웃음)

A 14-year-old boy years ago --

몇 년 전에 14살 아이가

this kid had vitiligo --

백반증에 걸렸는데

he asked me to show my face on television.

저에게 TV에서 제 얼굴을 공개하길 부탁했어요.

I wasn't going to do it,

전 하지 않으려고 했고,

we've been over this, I thought I was going to lose my job,

우린 계속 얘기를 했고, 전 직업을 잃을 거라고 생각했죠.

but the kid convinced me by saying,

하지만 그 아이는 저를 확신시켜줬어요.

"If you show people what you look like and explain this to them,

"만약 댱신이 어떤 모습인지 사람들에게 보여주고, 설명을 한다면,

maybe they will treat me differently."

사람들이 저도 다르게 대할 거예요."

Boom! Blinders off.

쿵! 눈가리개가 벗겨졌어요.

I did a TV report,

저는 TV 리포트를 진행했고,

got an overwhelming response.

엄청난 응답을 받게 되었죠.

So I didn't know what to do.

뭘 어떻게 해야 할지 몰랐어요.

I took the attention and focused it back on the kid

쏟아진 관심을 그 소년과 백반증을 가진 다른 사람들에게 돌려 주었죠.

and other people that have vitiligo.

I started a support group.

저는 협력단체를 시작했어요.

Pretty soon, we noticed "VITFriends"

얼마 지나지 않아, 저희는 "VITFriends"와

and "V-Strong" support groups all over the country.

"V-Strong" 같은 전국의 협력단체를 알게 되었죠.

In 2016, we all came together and celebrated World Vitiligo Day.

2016년, 저희는 모두 모여서 세계 백반증의 날을 기념했어요.

This past June 25,

지난 6월 25일,

we had over 300 people,

300명 이상이 모여서

all in celebration of our annual event.

우리의 연례 행사를 축하했죠.

It was amazing.

정말 대단한 일이죠.

Now, I'm not going to lie to you

저는 거짓말은 하지 않습니다.

and say it was quick or easy

백반증이라는 병과 함께 살아가는데 긍정적인 곳을 찾는 것은

for me to find a positive place living with this disease,

빠르고 쉬운 일은 아니었어요.

but I found it.

하지만 저는 찾았어요.

But I also got much more.

그보다 더 많은 것을 얻었죠.

I became a better man,

저는 더 나은 사람이 되었어요.

the man I always wanted to be,

제가 언제나 되고 싶었던 그런 사람요.

the kind of guy who can stand up in front of a room full of strangers

낯선 사람들로 가득한 곳에서 이렇게 앞에 서서,

and tell some of the toughest stories in his life

인생의 가장 힘겨웠던 시기에 대해 이야기를 들려주고,

and end it all with a smile,

미소를 지으면서 끝내고,

and find happiness in the fact that you all just smiled back.

여러분도 똑같이 미소지어 준다는 사실에 행복을 느끼는 그런 사람이요.
