There's an ancient parable about a farmer who lost his horse.

And neighbors came over to say, "Oh, that's too bad."

The next day, the farmer's son rides one of the wild horses,

Eventually, officers come knocking on people's doors,

やがて 役人がやって来て 家々を回り

looking for men to draft for an army,

軍隊に招集できる若者を 探して回ります

and they see the farmer's son and his leg and they pass him by.

農民の息子の脚が折れているのを見て 役人は通り過ぎていきます

And neighbors say, "Ooh, that's great luck!"

隣人がやって来て言います 「運が良かったなあ！」

And the farmer says, "Good or bad, hard to say."

すると農民は言います 「良いか悪いかは分からない」

I first heard this story 20 years ago,

この話を初めて聞いたのは 20年前のことです

and I have since applied it 100 times.

それ以来 100回は 自分に言い聞かせてきました

Didn't get the job I wanted:

望んだ仕事に就けなかった時も

good or bad, hard to say.

「良いか悪いかは分からない」

Got the job I wanted:

good or bad, hard to say.

To me, the story is not about looking on the bright side

このお話は 物事の良い側面を見よう という話でもなければ

or waiting to see how things turn out.

事態を静観しよう という話でもありません

It's about how eager we can be to label a situation,

教訓は 往々にして 状況に勝手な判断でレッテルを貼り

to put concrete around it by judging it.

具体的な意味を 持たせてしまいがちだということです

But reality is much more fluid,

でも現実は ずっと流動的です

and good and bad are often incomplete stories that we tell ourselves.

The parable has been my warning

この寓話が私に 警告してくれたのは

that by gripping tightly to the story of good or bad,

物事の良し悪しに しがみついてしまうと

I close down my ability to truly see a situation.

状況を真に見極められなくなるということ

I learn more when I proceed and loosen my grip

and proceed openly with curiosity and wonder.

But seven years ago,

when I was pregnant with my first child,

初めての子供を授かった時

I completely forgot this lesson.

I believed I knew wholeheartedly what was good.

何が良いことかを知っていると 心から信じ切っていました

When it came to having kids,

子供を持つことに関しては

I thought that good was some version of a superbaby,

「スーパー赤ちゃん」を産むのが 良いことだと思っていました

some ultrahealthy human who possessed not a single flaw

欠点がひとつもない 超健康優良児が

and would practically wear a cape flying into her superhero future.

I took DHA pills to ensure that my baby had a super-high-functioning,

我が子の身体機能が素晴らしく 超賢い赤ちゃんになるように

supersmart brain,

DHAのサプリを飲んだり

and I ate mostly organic food,

and I trained for a medication-free labor,

分娩時に薬が要らないように 運動をしたり

and I did many other things

because I thought these things would help me make not just a good baby,

but the best baby possible.

When my daughter Fiona was born, she weighed 4 pounds, 12 ounces,

or 2.15 kilograms.

The pediatrician said there were only two possible explanations

for her tiny size.

"Either," he said, "it's bad seed,"

And I wasn't so tired from labor to lose the thread of his logic:

my newborn, according to the doctor,

Eventually, I learned that my daughter had an ultra-rare chromosomal condition

called Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome.

She was missing a chunk of her fourth chromosome.

娘の４番染色体には 欠失があるのです

And although my daughter was good --

she was alive,

生きていましたし

and she had brand new baby skin

and the most aware onyx eyes --

くるくる動く宝石のような 黒い瞳をしていました

I also learned that people with her syndrome

一方で この症候群の患者には

have significant developmental delays and disabilities.

Some never learn to walk or talk.

歩いたり話したりできない人もいます

I did not have the equanimity of the farmer.

あのお話の農民のような落ち着きは 私にはありませんでした

The situation looked unequivocally bad to me.

状況は間違いなく 「悪い」ように思えました

But here's where the parable is so useful,

でも ここでこそ あの寓話が生きるのです

because for weeks after her diagnosis, I felt gripped by despair,

娘が診断を受けてから何週間も 私は失意の底に沈んでおり

locked in the story that all of this was tragic.

すべてが悲劇的だという 考えに閉じこもっていました

Reality, though -- thankfully -- is much more fluid,

ありがたいことに 現実はずっと流動的です

and it has much more to teach.

学ぶことはもっとあったのです

As I started to get to know this mysterious person who was my kid,

この不可思議な我が子を よりよく知るにつれて

my fixed, tight story of tragedy loosened.

固く閉ざされた悲劇の物語は 開き始めました

It turned out my girl loved reggae,

実は娘はレゲエ音楽が好きで

and she would smirk when my husband would bounce her tiny body up and down

夫が娘の小さな身体を リズムに合わせて揺らすと

to the rhythm.

Her onyx eyes eventually turned the most stunning Lake Tahoe blue,

and she loved using them to gaze intently into other people's eyes.

At five months old, she could not hold her head up like other babies,

but she could hold this deep, intent eye contact.

One friend said, "She's the most aware baby I've ever seen."

But where I saw the gift of her calm, attentive presence,

an occupational therapist who came over to our house to work with Fiona

saw a child who was neurologically dull.

This therapist was especially disappointed

that Fiona wasn't rolling over yet,

and so she told me we needed to wake her neurology up.

One day she leaned over my daughter's body,

We had a few therapists visit our house that first year,

and they usually focused on what they thought was bad about my kid.

I was really happy when Fiona started using her right hand

but the therapist was fixated on my child's left hand.

Fiona had a tendency not to use this hand very often,

and she would cross the fingers on that hand.

So the therapist said we should devise a splint,

which would rob my kid of the ability to actually use those fingers,

but it would at least force them into some position that looked normal.

In that first year, I was starting to realize a few things.

One: ancient parables aside, my kid had some bad therapists.

Two: I had a choice.

Like a person offered to swallow a red pill or a blue pill,

I could choose to see my daughter's differences as bad;

娘が普通と違うことを 「悪い」と考えることもできました

I could strive toward the goal that her therapists called,

「まだ分からない」とセラピストに 言ってもらうことも目指せたでしょう

"You'd never know."

They loved to pat themselves on the back when they could say about a kid,

セラピストは子供について こう言えると安心します

"You'd never know he was 'delayed' or 'autistic' or 'different.'"

「『発達遅れ』なのか『自閉症』か 『普通と違う』のか まだ分からない」

I could believe that the good path was the path that erased

できるだけ多くの違いを 打ち消してしまうような道こそが

as many differences as possible.

「良い」道だと 信じることもできました

Of course, this would have been a disastrous pursuit,

because at the cellular level, my daughter had rare blueprints.

She wasn't designed to be like other people.

She would lead a rare life.

So, I had another choice: I could drop my story

that neurological differences and developmental delays and disabilities

were bad,

which means I could also drop my story that a more able-bodied life was better.

I could release my cultural biases about what made a life good or bad

人生の良し悪しを決めるものについての 文化的な偏見を捨てて

and simply watch my daughter's life as it unfolded

娘の人生が進んでいくのを 開かれた考えと好奇心を持って

with openness and curiosity.

ただ見守るのです

One afternoon she was lying on her back,

ある午後 娘は仰向けになって

and she arched her back on the carpet

カーペットの上で 背中を反らせて

stuck her tongue out of the side of her mouth

口の端から舌を突き出して

and managed to torque her body onto her belly.

身体をよじって 腹ばいになることができました

Then she tipped over and rolled back onto her back,

and once there, she managed to do it all over again,

rolling and wiggling her 12-pound self under a coffee table.

At first, I thought she'd gotten stuck there,

She was a year old.

Other babies her age were for sure pulling up to stand and toddling around,

some of them.

To some, my kid's situation looked bad:

うちの娘の状況が 「悪い」と思う人もいるでしょう

a one-year-old who could only roll.

寝返りしか打てない１歳児だと

But screw that.

そんなのは構いません

My kid was enjoying the new, limber freedom of mobility.

うちの子は覚えたばかりの 動きを楽しんでいるのです

I rejoiced.

私は嬉しくなりました

Then again, what I watched that afternoon was a baby yanking on an electric cord,

とはいっても 赤ちゃんが 電気コードを引っ張っているのですから

so you know,

お分かりでしょうが

good or bad, hard to say.

良いか悪いかは分かりませんね

(Laughter)

I started seeing that when I released my grip

人生の良し悪しを 決めるものについて

about what made a life good or bad,

しがみついていた考えを捨てると

I could watch my daughter's life unfold and see what it was.

娘の人生が進んでいくのを あるがままに眺めることができました

It was beautiful,

それは美しく

it was complicated,

複雑で

joyful, hard --

喜ばしく 困難で

in other words: just another expression of the human experience.

つまり 人間の経験の ひとつの形であったのです

Eventually, my family and I moved to a new state in America,

最終的に 私たち家族は アメリカの別の州に移り

and we got lucky with a brand-new batch of therapists.

もっと良いセラピストに 巡り会えました

They didn't focus on all that was wrong with my kid.

彼らはうちの子の 悪いところばかりに注目せず

They didn't see her differences as problems to fix.

普通と違うことを直すべき問題だとは 捉えませんでした

They acknowledged her limitations,

娘の限界を認識はしましたが

but they also saw her strengths,

娘の長所も見てくれました

and they celebrated her for who she was.

あるがままの娘を 認めてくれたのです

Their goal wasn't to make Fiona as normal as possible;

their goal was simply to help her be as independent as possible

so that she could fulfill her potential, however that looked for her.

But the culture at large does not take this open attitude about disabilities.

しかし 世の中の文化は障がいに対し これほど開かれた考えを持ってはいません

We call congenital differences "birth defects,"

生まれつきの違いを 「先天性欠陥」と言い

as though human beings were objects on a factory line.

まるで人間を工場のラインで 作られた製品のように呼びます

We might offer pitying expressions

同僚の赤ちゃんが

when we learn that a colleague had a baby with Down syndrome.

ダウン症だと分かると 哀れむような目で見ます

We hail a blockbuster film about a suicidal wheelchair user,

自殺を図る車椅子使用者を描いた 人気映画を褒めそやします

despite the fact that actual wheelchair users tell us

実際の車椅子使用者が ステレオタイプは不適切で

that stereotype is unfair and damaging.

誹謗中傷だと言っているにも かかわらずです

And sometimes our medical institutions decide what lives are not worth living.

時には 医療施設が生きるに値しない命を 決めることもあります

Such is the case with Amelia Rivera,

アミリア・リヴェラのケースが まさにそうです

a girl with my daughter's same syndrome.

娘と同じ症候群を患っていました

In 2012, a famous American children's hospital

2012年にアメリカの 有名な小児病院が

initially denied Amelia the right to a lifesaving kidney transplant

当初 アミリアの救命のための 腎臓移植を拒否しました

because, according to their form,

as it said, she was "mentally retarded."

This is the way that the story of disabilities as bad manifests

in a culture.

But there's a surprisingly insidious counterstory --

the story, especially, that people with intellectual disabilities are good

知的障がい者は 「善」だとする物語です

because they are here to teach us something magical,

私たちに何か素晴らしいことを 教えてくれるし

or they are inherently angelic and always sweet.

天使のように可憐で 常に優しいからと言うのです

You have heard this ableist trope before:

健常者による障がい者差別の 物語を聞いたことがあるでしょう

the boy with Down syndrome who's one of God's special children,

ダウン症の男の子が 「神様の特別な子供」だとか

or the girl with the walker and the communication device

歩行器と発声器を使う女の子を

who is a precious little angel.

小さな天使と呼ぶようなものです

This story rears its head in my daughter's life

こういった物語が 娘の生活に入ってくるのは

around Christmastime,

特にクリスマスの時季です

when certain people get positively giddy

中には 出し物のために

at the thought of seeing her in angel's wings and a halo

娘に天使の羽根と 光輪をつけてはどうかと考えて

at the pageant.

喜ぶ人がいるのです

The insinuation is that these people don't experience the sticky complexities

この物語は障がい者が 人間として複雑な経験をしないものと

of being human.

思い込んで語られています

And although at times, especially as a baby,

確かに 特に赤ちゃんの時は

my daughter has, in fact, looked angelic,

娘が天使のように可憐に 見えることもありましたが

she has grown into the type of kid

娘は他の子がするような

who does the rascally things that any other kid does,

いたずらをする子供に成長しました

such as when she, at age four, shoved her two-year-old sister.

例えば４歳の時には ２歳の妹を押したこともあります

My girl deserves the right to annoy the hell out of you,

うちの娘も他の子と同じように 人をうんざりさせたっていいのです

like any other kid.

When we label a person tragic or angelic,

人に「悲劇的」だとか 「天使のよう」だとか

bad or good,

良し悪しのレッテルを貼ることは

we rob them of their humanity,

人間性を奪うことです

along with not only the messiness and complexity that that title brings,

人間であることの苦労や 複雑さのみならず

but the rights and dignities as well.

権利や尊厳をも奪うのです

My girl does not exist to teach me things

娘は私や皆さんに 何かを教えてくれるために

or any of us things,

存在するのではありません

but she has indeed taught me:

でも私は確かに教わりました

number one, how many mozzarella cheese sticks

その１「10キロの子供が １日あたりに食べられる―

a 22-pound human being can consume in one day --

which is five, for the record;

and two, the gift of questioning my culture's beliefs

If you had told me six years ago

that my daughter would sometimes use and iPad app to communicate,

I might have thought that was sad.

But now I recall the first day I handed Fiona her iPad,

loaded with a thousand words,

each represented by a tiny little icon or little square on her iPad app.

And I recall how bold and hopeful it felt,

even as some of her therapists said that my expectations were way too high,

And I recall watching in awe as she gradually learned

to flex her little thumb

and hit the buttons to say words she loved,

like "reggae" and "cheese"

and a hundred other words she loved that her mouth couldn't yet say.

And then we had to teach her less-fun words, prepositions --

words like "of" and "on" and "in."

「of（の）」や「on（上で）」や 「in（中の）」などです

And we worked on this for a few weeks.

数週間かけて取り組みました

And then I recall sitting at a dining room table

with many relatives,

and, apropos of absolutely nothing,

何の脈絡もなく

Fiona used her iPad app to say,

"poop in toilet."

My kid is human, that's all.

And that is a lot.
