There's an ancient parable about a farmer who lost his horse.

The next day, the farmer's son rides one of the wild horses,

And the neighbors say, "Oh, that's terrible luck."

Eventually, officers come knocking on people's doors,

이윽고, 관리들이 마을사람들을 찾아와서는

looking for men to draft for an army,

군대로 징집할 장정들을 찾기 시작했어요.

and they see the farmer's son and his leg and they pass him by.

그들은 농부의 아들이 다리를 다친 걸 보고 그냥 지나갔지요.

And neighbors say, "Ooh, that's great luck!"

이웃들이 말했습니다. "와, 굉장한 행운이네요!"

And the farmer says, "Good or bad, hard to say."

I first heard this story 20 years ago,

and I have since applied it 100 times.

Didn't get the job I wanted:

good or bad, hard to say.

To me, the story is not about looking on the bright side

제게 이 얘기는 긍정적인 측면을 바라보라거나

or waiting to see how things turn out.

일의 추이를 관망해보라는 의미는 아닌 것 같아요.

It's about how eager we can be to label a situation,

우리는 어떤 상황에 대해 미리 꼬리표를 붙이고

to put concrete around it by judging it.

콘크리트를 부어버려서 섣불리 판단하려 합니다.

But reality is much more fluid,

하지만 현실은 매우 유동적이에요.

and good and bad are often incomplete stories that we tell ourselves.

좋고 나쁨은 우리가 흔히 갖는 불완전한 이야기일 뿐입니다.

The parable has been my warning

그 우화는 제 스스로에 대한 경고가 되었는데요.

that by gripping tightly to the story of good or bad,

좋거나 나쁘다는 것에 집착할 수록

I close down my ability to truly see a situation.

상황을 제대로 바라볼 수 있는 능력을 잃어버리는 것 같았죠.

I learn more when I proceed and loosen my grip

더 큰 깨우침을 얻은 때는 그러한 집착을 버리고

and proceed openly with curiosity and wonder.

호기심과 궁금함, 열린 마음을 갖고 나아갈 때였습니다.

But seven years ago,

하지만, 7년 전에

when I was pregnant with my first child,

제가 첫째를 임신했을 때

I completely forgot this lesson.

저는 이러한 교훈을 까맣게 잊어버렸죠.

I believed I knew wholeheartedly what was good.

좋은게 어떤 것인지 잘 알고 있다고 생각했죠.

When it came to having kids,

아이를 가지는 것에 있어서

I thought that good was some version of a superbaby,

좋은 것이란 수퍼베이비를 낳는 것이라 생각했던 거죠.

some ultrahealthy human who possessed not a single flaw

어떠한 흠결도 없는 아주 건강한 아이가

and would practically wear a cape flying into her superhero future.

망토를 입고 수퍼히어로처럼 미래로 날아가지 않을까 했었죠.

I took DHA pills to ensure that my baby had a super-high-functioning,

전 DHA를 섭취하며 제 아이가 우수한 신체 기능을 갖길 바랬어요.

supersmart brain,

뛰어난 두뇌도요.

and I ate mostly organic food,

저는 대부분 유기농 식품만 먹었고요.

and I trained for a medication-free labor,

자연분만을 위한 훈련도 했지요.

and I did many other things

그 밖에도 많은 것을 했는데요.

because I thought these things would help me make not just a good baby,

제 생각에 이렇게 하는 건 좋은 아이를 넘어

but the best baby possible.

최고의 아이를 갖게해줄 것 같았죠.

When my daughter Fiona was born, she weighed 4 pounds, 12 ounces,

제 딸 피오나는 체중 4파운드 12온스로 태어났습니다.

or 2.15 kilograms.

2.15 kg이죠.

The pediatrician said there were only two possible explanations

소아과 의사는 오로지 두 가지 가능성으로 인해

for her tiny size.

"Either," he said, "it's bad seed,"

"or it's bad soil."

And I wasn't so tired from labor to lose the thread of his logic:

my newborn, according to the doctor,

was a bad plant.

Eventually, I learned that my daughter had an ultra-rare chromosomal condition

결국 제 딸이 염색체 이상인 희귀병이란 걸 알게 됐는데요.

called Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome.

울프 허쉬호른 증후군입니다.

She was missing a chunk of her fourth chromosome.

제 아이는 4번 염색체에 결실이 있습니다.

And although my daughter was good --

비록 제 딸 아이가 착하고

she was alive,

여전히 살아있으며

and she had brand new baby skin

신생아의 피부를 갖고 있고

and the most aware onyx eyes --

새까만 눈동자를 지니고 있지만

I also learned that people with her syndrome

이런 질병을 가진 사람들은

have significant developmental delays and disabilities.

심각한 발달 지연과 장애가 나타난다는 걸 알게 되었죠.

Some never learn to walk or talk.

경우에 따라선 걷거나 말하지도 못해요.

I did not have the equanimity of the farmer.

저는 농부처럼 평정심을 갖지 못했어요.

The situation looked unequivocally bad to me.

상황은 명백하게 나빠보였죠.

But here's where the parable is so useful,

하지만 이 상황이야말로 그 우화가 유용한 때죠.

because for weeks after her diagnosis, I felt gripped by despair,

진단 받은 지 몇 주만에 저는 절망감에 사로잡혔고

locked in the story that all of this was tragic.

이 모든 상황이 비극이란 생각에 갖혀버렸어요.

Reality, though -- thankfully -- is much more fluid,

and it has much more to teach.

As I started to get to know this mysterious person who was my kid,

my fixed, tight story of tragedy loosened.

It turned out my girl loved reggae,

and she would smirk when my husband would bounce her tiny body up and down

to the rhythm.

Her onyx eyes eventually turned the most stunning Lake Tahoe blue,

and she loved using them to gaze intently into other people's eyes.

At five months old, she could not hold her head up like other babies,

but she could hold this deep, intent eye contact.

One friend said, "She's the most aware baby I've ever seen."

But where I saw the gift of her calm, attentive presence,

an occupational therapist who came over to our house to work with Fiona

saw a child who was neurologically dull.

This therapist was especially disappointed

that Fiona wasn't rolling over yet,

and so she told me we needed to wake her neurology up.

One day she leaned over my daughter's body,

We had a few therapists visit our house that first year,

and they usually focused on what they thought was bad about my kid.

I was really happy when Fiona started using her right hand

to bully a dangling stuffed sheep,

but the therapist was fixated on my child's left hand.

Fiona had a tendency not to use this hand very often,

and she would cross the fingers on that hand.

So the therapist said we should devise a splint,

but it would at least force them into some position that looked normal.

In that first year, I was starting to realize a few things.

One: ancient parables aside, my kid had some bad therapists.

Two: I had a choice.

Like a person offered to swallow a red pill or a blue pill,

I could choose to see my daughter's differences as bad;

I could strive toward the goal that her therapists called,

"You'd never know."

They loved to pat themselves on the back when they could say about a kid,

"You'd never know he was 'delayed' or 'autistic' or 'different.'"

I could believe that the good path was the path that erased

저는 이렇게 믿어볼 수도 있었는데요.

좋은 것이란 최대한 다양한 가능성을 열어두는 것이라고요.

as many differences as possible.

Of course, this would have been a disastrous pursuit,

물론, 이렇게 하는 건 끔찍한 시도일 수밖에 없었어요.

because at the cellular level, my daughter had rare blueprints.

왜냐하면 세포 단계에서부터 제 딸은 특별한 청사진을 가졌거든요.

She wasn't designed to be like other people.

그녀는 남들처럼 되려고 태어나지 않았습니다.

She would lead a rare life.

제 아이는 특별한 삶을 살게 되겠죠.

So, I had another choice: I could drop my story

그래서 저는 또 다른 선택을 했어요. 제 생각들을 완전히 접었는데요.

that neurological differences and developmental delays and disabilities

신경학적 차이와 발달 지연, 그리고 발달 장애는

were bad,

나쁜 것이라는 생각들요.

which means I could also drop my story that a more able-bodied life was better.

반대로 좀 더 건강한 신체가 더 나은 삶이라는 생각도 떨쳐버렸죠.

I could release my cultural biases about what made a life good or bad

삶에서 좋고 나쁜 것에 대한 저의 편견 역시 내려놓을 수도 있었습니다.

and simply watch my daughter's life as it unfolded

그리고 아직 펼쳐지지 않은 아이의 삶을 있는 그대로 지켜보기로 했죠.

with openness and curiosity.

열린 마음과 호기심을 가지고 말이죠.

One afternoon she was lying on her back,

어느날 아이는 반듯이 누워서

and she arched her back on the carpet

카펫에 구부린 채로

stuck her tongue out of the side of her mouth

입 옆으로 혀를 쭉 내밀며

and managed to torque her body onto her belly.

배 쪽으로 몸을 돌리려했죠.

Then she tipped over and rolled back onto her back,

그러고는 뒤집혀서 다시 벌렁 드러눕게 되었어요.

and once there, she managed to do it all over again,

그 자리에서 아이는 또 다시 그걸 반복했는데요.

rolling and wiggling her 12-pound self under a coffee table.

커피 테이블 밑에서 12파운드의 몸을 계속 구르며 꿈틀거렸죠.

At first, I thought she'd gotten stuck there,

처음에는 아이가 꼼짝도 못했지만

but then I saw her reaching for something that her eye had been on all along:

a black electric cord.

바로 검정색 전기코드였죠.

She was a year old.

Other babies her age were for sure pulling up to stand and toddling around,

some of them.

아이들도 간혹 있죠.

To some, my kid's situation looked bad:

제 아이의 상황은 나빠보였습니다.

a one-year-old who could only roll.

한 살 아이가 고작 구르기만 했으니까요.

But screw that.

하지만 달리 보면

My kid was enjoying the new, limber freedom of mobility.

제 아이는 새롭고도 유연한 이동 방식을 즐기고 있던 거죠.

I rejoiced.

저는 엄청 기뻤어요.

Then again, what I watched that afternoon was a baby yanking on an electric cord,

그날 오후에 또 한 번 아이가 전기코드를 잡아당겼는데요.

so you know,

아시다시피

good or bad, hard to say.

좋은 건지 나쁜 건지 말하기 어려웠지요.

(Laughter)

I started seeing that when I released my grip

저는 집착을 버리기 시작했는데요.

about what made a life good or bad,

좋은 것, 나쁜 것들에 대해서 말이죠.

I could watch my daughter's life unfold and see what it was.

그러자 아이의 있는 그대로의 삶이 제 눈에 들어오기 시작했어요.

It was beautiful,

아름다웠어요.

it was complicated,

복잡하기도 했고요.

joyful, hard --

즐겁기도 하고, 어렵기도 했죠.

in other words: just another expression of the human experience.

다시 말해, 사람이 겪는 경험들이 새롭게 표현되는 것이었어요.

Eventually, my family and I moved to a new state in America,

결국 저희 가족은 미국의 또 다른 주로 이사했는데요.

and we got lucky with a brand-new batch of therapists.

운 좋게도 예전과는 다른 치료사들을 만나게 됐습니다.

They didn't focus on all that was wrong with my kid.

그들은 제 아이의 나쁜 점에 주목하지 않았어요.

They didn't see her differences as problems to fix.

제 아이의 다른 점을 고쳐야 할 문제점이라 생각지도 않았고요.

They acknowledged her limitations,

그들은 아이의 한계점을 인정했습니다.

but they also saw her strengths,

그들은 아이의 강건한 점 역시 발견했고

and they celebrated her for who she was.

Their goal wasn't to make Fiona as normal as possible;

their goal was simply to help her be as independent as possible

so that she could fulfill her potential, however that looked for her.

But the culture at large does not take this open attitude about disabilities.

하지만 장애에 대해 열린 마음을 갖는 문화는 아직 취약하죠.

We call congenital differences "birth defects,"

태생적인 차이점들을 우리는 "선천적 장애"라고 부릅니다.

as though human beings were objects on a factory line.

마치 사람을 생산라인의 제품처럼 생각하며 말이죠.

We might offer pitying expressions

아마도 우리는 측은하게 생각할 겁니다.

when we learn that a colleague had a baby with Down syndrome.

어느 동료가 다운증후군 자녀를 가졌다는 걸 알게된다면 말이죠.

We hail a blockbuster film about a suicidal wheelchair user,

블록버스터 영화에서는 휠체어를 탄 장애인이 자살충동을 느끼는 것으로 묘사되기도 합니다.

despite the fact that actual wheelchair users tell us

하지만 실제 보행 장애인들은

that stereotype is unfair and damaging.

그런 전형적 묘사가 불공정하고 상처를 준다고 말하죠.

And sometimes our medical institutions decide what lives are not worth living.

때론 의료기관들마저 특정한 삶은 가치 없는 것으로 결론내리곤 합니다.

Such is the case with Amelia Rivera,

아멜리아 리베라가 그런 사례인데요.

a girl with my daughter's same syndrome.

그 소녀는 제 딸과 동일한 질환을 가졌죠.

In 2012, a famous American children's hospital

2012년 미국의 유명한 아동병원에서는

initially denied Amelia the right to a lifesaving kidney transplant

아멜리아가 신장 이식 받을 권리를 애초에 거부했습니다.

because, according to their form,

왜냐면 그들의 기록에 따르면

as it said, she was "mentally retarded."

소위 말하는 "저능아"란 이유였어요.

This is the way that the story of disabilities as bad manifests

이것이야 말로 장애란 나쁜 것이라 간주되는

in a culture.

문화적 방증인 것이죠.

But there's a surprisingly insidious counterstory --

하지만 놀랍게도 이를 반박하는 이야기들도 퍼지고 있어요.

the story, especially, that people with intellectual disabilities are good

특히 지적 장애를 가진 사람은 선하다는 얘기인데요.

because they are here to teach us something magical,

or they are inherently angelic and always sweet.

You have heard this ableist trope before:

the boy with Down syndrome who's one of God's special children,

or the girl with the walker and the communication device

보행 보조장치나 의사소통 보조기기를 착용한 소녀는

who is a precious little angel.

소중한 작은 천사라는 식이죠.

This story rears its head in my daughter's life

이런 이야기들은 제 딸 아이의 삶에도 어김 없이 나타났는데요.

around Christmastime,

크리스마스 시즌에

when certain people get positively giddy

한 무리의 사람들이 매우 들뜬 채로

at the thought of seeing her in angel's wings and a halo

제 아이가 가진 천사의 날개와 후광을 보겠다는 생각으로

at the pageant.

행사를 찾아오죠.

The insinuation is that these people don't experience the sticky complexities

이러한 부류의 사람들은 인간이 지닌 여러 가지 복잡성을

of being human.

간과하는 경향이 있죠.

And although at times, especially as a baby,

때로는, 특히 아기 때에는

my daughter has, in fact, looked angelic,

사실 제 딸아이가 천사처럼 보이기도 하지만

she has grown into the type of kid

who does the rascally things that any other kid does,

such as when she, at age four, shoved her two-year-old sister.

My girl deserves the right to annoy the hell out of you,

제 아이 역시 여러분들을 짜증날 정도로 괴롭힐 수 있는 권리가 있죠.

like any other kid.

다른 아이들과 마찬가지로요.

When we label a person tragic or angelic,

우리가 어떤 이를 끔찍하다거나 혹은 천사같다고 규정짓거나

bad or good,

좋거나 혹은 나쁘다고 판단할 때

we rob them of their humanity,

우리는 그들의 인간성을 훼손하게 되는 것이죠.

along with not only the messiness and complexity that that title brings,

그 편견이 가져오는 혼란과 복잡성뿐만 아니라

but the rights and dignities as well.

권리와 존엄성까지 말이죠.

My girl does not exist to teach me things

제 딸아이는 제게 무언가를 가르치기 위한 존재는 아니에요.

or any of us things,

우리들 중 누구도 가르치지 않죠.

but she has indeed taught me:

그러나 제 아이가 진정 저를 깨우친게 있는데요.

number one, how many mozzarella cheese sticks

첫째, 모짜렐라 치즈 스틱을

a 22-pound human being can consume in one day --

22파운드짜리 인간이 하루 동안 얼마나 먹어치울 수 있는지 말이죠.

which is five, for the record;

최고 기록은 5개였어요.

and two, the gift of questioning my culture's beliefs

두 번째는 저의 문화적 인식에 대한 질문을 던져줬어요.

about what makes a life good

무엇이 삶을 행복하게 만들고

and what makes life bad.

무엇이 삶을 불행하게 만드는지를 말이죠.

If you had told me six years ago

만약 제가 6년 전에

that my daughter would sometimes use and iPad app to communicate,

제 딸이 의사소통을 위해 아이패드 앱을 사용해야 한다고 들었다면

I might have thought that was sad.

아마도 저는 슬퍼했을 거예요.

But now I recall the first day I handed Fiona her iPad,

loaded with a thousand words,

each represented by a tiny little icon or little square on her iPad app.

And I recall how bold and hopeful it felt,

even as some of her therapists said that my expectations were way too high,

that she would never be able to hit those tiny targets.

And I recall watching in awe as she gradually learned

and hit the buttons to say words she loved,

and a hundred other words she loved that her mouth couldn't yet say.

And then we had to teach her less-fun words, prepositions --

words like "of" and "on" and "in."

And we worked on this for a few weeks.

And then I recall sitting at a dining room table

Fiona used her iPad app to say,
