and when I give my name, I'm often asked, "Where are you from?"

And this sort of fixes me for them.

Maybe that's why I find it hard to respond to questions about identity

And it's not just a sort of teenage refusal to be labeled.

It's about our own most identities,

They give us a sense of belonging.

and it can make you feel warm and fuzzy inside.

Do we really need identity myths to feel safe?

Because I see religious, national, ethnic disputes

What if we reject every single primordial origin myth

Now, origin myths are closely linked to tradition,

and the word tradition points to something old

and people assume tradition is just history,

The two are often in severe conflict.

I was brought up in the 1970s near Wembley

The author of that book

that exactly the same journey occurs for those young men and women

Most of those who join Al Qaeda

They've been involved for decades

There is no pure ethnicity, national culture,

אין שום אתניות או תרבות לאומית טהורות,

and the ethical choices we have today

והבחירות המוסריות שאנו בוחרים היום

are far wider than being forced to choose

כוללות הרבה יותר מאשר רק את הכורח לבחור

between racist right and religious right visions,

בין חזון של ימין גזעני לזה של ימין דתי;

dismal visions of culture.

Now, culture isn't just about language, food, clothing and music,

תרבות איננה רק שפה, מזון, ביגוד ומוסיקה,

but gender relations, ancient monuments,

אלא גם יחסים מגדריים, אנדרטאות עתיקות,

a heritage of sacred texts.

מורשת של טקסטים מקודשים.

But culture can also be what has been decided to be culture

אך תרבות יכולה להיות גם מה שהוחלט שהוא תרבות

by those who have a political stake

in pounding culture into the shape of a prison.

Big political identity claims are elite bids for power.

They're not answers to social or economic or political injustices.

They often obscure them.

And what about the large number of people across the globe

who can't point to a monument from their past,

who don't possess a sacred written text,

who can't hark back

שאינם יכולים לחזור

to the past glories of a civilization or empire?

אל תהילת העבר של תרבות או קיסרות כלשהן?

Are these people less a part of humanity?

האם הם אנושיים פחות?

What about you,

מה איתכם,

now, listening to this?

אתם, שמאזינים לזה?

What about you and your identity,

מה איתכם ועם הזהות שלכם,

because you stitch your experiences and your thoughts into a continuous person

שהרי אתם שוזרים את חוויותיכם ומחשבותיכם לכדי אדם מתמשך

moving forward in time.

שנע קדימה בזמן.

And this is what you are when you say,

וזה מה שאתם, כשאתם אומרים,

"I," "am," or "me."

"אני", "אנוכי" או "הנני".

But this also includes all of your hopes and dreams,

אבל זה גם כולל את כל תקוותיכם וחלומותיכם,

all of the you's that could have been,

כל ה"אתם" שעשויים היו להיות,

and it includes all the other people

וגם את כל האנשים והדברים הנוספים שכלולים בביוגרפיה של מי שאתם.

and the things that are in the biography of who you are.

They, the others,

הם, האחרים,

are also a part of you,

גם הם חלק מכם,

moving forward with you.

נעים קדימה יחד אתכם.

Your authentic self, if such a thing exists,

העצמי האותנטי שלכם, אם יש דבר כזה,

is a complex, messy and uncertain self,

הוא עצמי מורכב, מבולגן ולא-ודאי,

and that is a very good thing.

וזה טוב מאד.

Why not value those impurities and uncertainties?

Maybe clinging to pure identities is a sign of immaturity,

and ethnic, nationalist and religious traditions are bad for you.

Why not be skeptical about every primordial origin claim

made on your behalf?

Why not reject the identity myths that call on you to belong,

that politicians and community leaders,

place on you?

If we don't need origin stories and fixed identities,

we can challenge ourselves to think creatively

about each other and our future.

And here culture always takes care of itself.

I'm not worried about culture.

התרבות לא מדאיגה אותי.

Cultures are creative, dynamic processes,

תרבויות הן תהליכים יצירתיים ודינמיים,

not imposed laws and boundaries.

ולא חוקים וגבולות מוכתבים.

This is Abu al-Walid Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Rushd,

זהו אבו ואליד מוחמד איבן-אחמד איבן-רושד,

a very senior Muslim judge and thinker in Cordoba in the 12th century,

שופט והוגה מוסלמי בכיר ביותר בקורדובה של המאה ה-12,

and his writings were considered deeply blasphemous, heretical and evil.

שכתביו נחשבו לדברי נאצה, כפירה ורוע קיצוניים.

Long after he died,

הרבה אחרי מותו,

followers of his work were ruthlessly hunted down,

חסידי מפעל חייו עוד נרדפו באכזריות,

banished and killed over several centuries

by the most powerful religious institution of the medieval period.

That institution was the Roman Catholic Church.

המוסד היה הכנסיה הרומית-קתולית.

Why?

ומדוע?

Because ibn Rushd said that something true in religion

כי איבן-רושד אמר שדבר-אמת בדת

may conflict with something

עלול לעמוד בסתירה

that your reason finds to be true on earth,

למשהו שהשכל מזהה כדבר-אמת בעולם,

but the latter is still true.

ושהאמת השניה היא הנכונה.

There are two distinct worlds of truth,

יש שני עולמות-אמת מובהקים,

one based on our reason and evidence, and one that is divine,

האחד מבוסס על הגיון וראיות והשני אלוהי,

and the state, political power, social law are in the realm of reason.

כשהמדינה, הכוח הפוליטי והכוח החברתי הם בעולם ההגיון.

Religious life is a different realm.

ואילו חיי הדת - בעולם השני.

They should be kept separated.

יש להפריד ביניהם.

Social and political life should be governed by our reason,

בחיים החברתיים והפוליטיים צריך למשול ההגיון שלנו,

not by religion.

ולא הדת.

And you can see why the church was upset by his writings,

ואפשר להבין מדוע הכנסיה קצפה על כתביו,

as indeed were some Muslims during his lifetime,

כמו-גם כמה מוסלמים בימי חייו,

because he gives us a strong statement of secularism

כי הוא מעניק לנו הצהרת חילוניות עזה,

of a kind which is normal in Europe today.

Now, history plays many tricks on us.

It undermines our fixed truths

and what we believe to be our culture and their culture.

Ibn Rushd, someone who happens to be a Muslim,

is considered one of the key influences

in the introduction and spread of secularism in Europe.

So against religious, nationalist and racial purists of all kinds,

אז לנוכח טהרנות דתית, לאומנית וגזענית מכל הסוגים,

can you make his story a part of your own,

האם תוכלו להפוך את סיפורו לחלק מסיפורכם,

not because he happened to be a Muslim,

לא משום שהוא היה במקרה מוסלמי,

not because he happened to be an Arab,

לא משום שהוא היה במקרה ערבי,

but because he was a human being

אלא משום שהוא היה אדם

with some very good ideas

עם כמה רעיונות טובים מאד

that shook his world

שזעזעו את עולמו

and ours.

ואת עולמנו.
