Over the last two decades, India has become

a global hub for software development

and offshoring of back office services, as we call it,

and what we were interested in finding out was that

over the last two decades in India,

there's been a flight of white collar jobs

from the developed world to India.

When this is combined with the loss of manufacturing jobs

to China, it has, you know, led to considerable angst

amongst the Western populations.

In fact, if you look at polls, they show a declining

trend for support for free trade in the West.

Now, the Western elites, however, have said

this fear is misplaced.

have done so — read the book by Thomas Friedman

In fact, he says, it's innovation that will keep the West

ahead of the developing world,

with the more sophisticated, innovative tasks being done

in the developed world, and the less sophisticated,

કરાઇ રહેલાં થોડાં કંટાળાજનક કાર્યો

shall we say, drudge work being done

in the developing world.

Now, what we were trying to understand was,

is this true?

Could India become a source, or a global hub,

of innovation, just like it's become a global hub

બની શક્યું છે, તે જ રીતે શું ભારત નવોત્થાનનું

for back office services and software development?

પણ કેન્દ્ર બની શકશે ખરૂ?

And for the last four years, my coauthor Phanish Puranam

છેલ્લાં ચાર વર્ષથી હું અને મારા સહલેખક, ફણીશ પુરણમ,

and I spent investigating this topic.

આ વિષય પર શોધ-તપાસ કરી રહ્યા છીએ.

Initially, or, you know, as people would say, you know,

શરૂ શરૂમાં તો, તમે જાણો જ છો કે, જે લોકો પશ્ચિમનાં નવોત્થાન

in fact the more aggressive people who are supporting

the Western innovative model, say,

"Where are the Indian Googles, iPods and Viagras,

if the Indians are so bloody smart?" (Laughter)

તો ભારતીય ગુગલ કે આઇ-પૉડ કે વાયગ્રા ક્યાં છે?" (હાસ્ય)

So initially, when we started our research, we went

એટલે, અમારાં સંશોધનની શરૂઆત કરતી વખતે

and met several executives, and we asked them,

અમે ઘણા પ્રબંધકોને મળ્યા અને તેમને પૂછ્યું,

"What do you think? Will India go from being a favored

ભારત સૉફ્ટવેર વિકાસ અને પાછળની ઑફિસ સેવાઓનાં મહત્વના મુકામથી

destination for software services and back office services

આગળ વધીને નવોત્થાનની મંજિલ બની શકે

to a destination for innovation?"

એ વિષે તમારૂં શું માનવું છે?"

They laughed. They dismissed us.

તેઓએ હસીને અમને કાઢી મૂક્યા.

તેઓએ અમને કહ્યું,"શું તમને ખબર નથી કે ભારતીયો કંઇ જ નવું નથી કરતા?"

They said, "You know what? Indians don't do innovation."

The more polite ones said, "Well, you know, Indians

જે થોડા વિનયી હતા તેઓનું કહેવું હતું કે, "હા, ભારતીયો

make good software programmers and accountants,

સારા સૉફ્ટવૅર પ્રોગ્રામર કે હિસાબનીસ બની શકે,

but they can't do the creative stuff."

Sometimes, it took a more, took a veneer of sophistication,

કોઇ વાર આ બાબતને આધુનિક સજ્જનતાનો થોડૉ અંચળો પહેરાવી દેવામાં આવે

and people said, "You know, it's nothing to do with Indians.

અને કહેવામાં આવે કે" આમાં ભારતીયતાને કંઇ લેવા દેવા નથી.

It's really the rule-based, regimented education system

તેનું ખરૂં કારણ તો ભારતમાં કાયદાઓની જડતા માં જકડાયેલી પધ્ધતિમાં બંધ શિક્ષણ

in India that is responsible for killing all creativity."

તંત્રને કારણે ભારતીયોની સર્જનાત્મકતા ખતમ થઇ ગઇ છે.

જો તમારે ખરા અર્થમાં સર્જનાત્મકતા જોવી હોય તો

They said, instead, if you want to see real creativity,

સિલિકૉન વેલીમાંની ગુગલ, માઇક્રૉસૉફ્ટ કે ઇન્ટૅલ

go to Silicon Valley, and look at companies

like Google, Microsoft, Intel.

જેવી કંપનીઓ જોવી જોઇએ.

So we started examining the R&D and innovation labs

એટલે અમે સિલિકૉન વેલીમાં આવેલી સંશોધન અને વિકાસ તેમ જ નવોત્થાન

of Silicon Valley.

પ્રયોગશાળાઓ જોવાનું શરૂ કર્યું.

Well, interestingly, what you find there is,

મજાની વાત એ છે કે ત્યાં સામાન્ય રીતે

usually you are introduced to the head of the innovation lab

તમારો પરિચય નવોત્થાન પ્રયોગશાળાના કે સંશોધન અને વિકાસ

or the R&D center as they may call it,

વિભાગના વડા સાથે કરાવવામા આવે,

and more often than not, it's an Indian. (Laughter)

અને જે મોટા ભાગે કોઇ ને કોઇ ભારતીય જ નીકળે. (હાસ્ય)

So I immediately said, "Well, but you could not have been

મેં તરત જ એમને પૂછ્યું," પણ તમે ભારતમાં તો નહીં

educated in India, right?

ભણ્યા હો, ખરૂંને?

You must have gotten your education here."

તમારૂં ભણતર તો અહીં જ થયું હશે."

It turned out, in every single case,

હકીકત તો એ હતી કે, તેમાંના દરેક

they came out of the Indian educational system.

ભારતનાં શિક્ષણ તંત્રમાંથી બહાર પડ્યા હતા.

So we realized that maybe we had the wrong question,

એટલે અમને થયું કે કદાચ અમારો સવાલ ખોટો હશે,

and the right question is, really, can Indians

અને ખરો પ્રશ્ન એ હશે કે, શું સાચે જ, ભારતથી આવેલ

based out of India do innovative work?

ભારતીય નવોત્થાનનું કામ કરી શકે ખરાં?

So off we went to India. We made, I think,

અમે પાછા ભારત ગયા. મારા માનવા પ્રમાણે , અમે

about a dozen trips to Bangalore, Mumbai, Gurgaon,

બેંગલોર,મુંબઇ, ગુરગાંવ, દિલ્હી, હૈદરાબાદ અને તમે કહો તે જગ્યાનાં

Delhi, Hyderabad, you name it, to examine

what is the level of corporate innovation in these cities.

And what we found was, as we progressed in our research,

was, that we were asking really the wrong question.

When you ask, "Where are the Indian Googles,

Instead, innovation, if you remember, some of you

may have read the famous economist Schumpeter,

he said, "Innovation is novelty

in how value is created and distributed."

It could be new products and services,

એ નવાં ઉત્પાદનો કે સેવાઓ ઉપરાંત

but it could also be new ways of producing products.

It could also be novel ways of organizing firms and industries.

કે પછી પેઢીઓ કે ઉદ્યોગોને નવી રીતે ગઠીત કરવાની રીત પણ હોઇ શકે.

Once you take this, there's no reason to restrict innovation,

જેવું આ દ્રષ્ટિથી વિચારીએ કે જોઇ શકાય છે કે નવોત્થાનને માત્ર તેના લાભકર્તાઓ,

the beneficiaries of innovation, just to end users.

આખરી વપરાશકારો, પૂરતું મ ર્યાદીત કરવા માટે કોઇ કારણ નથી.

When you take this broader conceptualization of innovation,

જ્યારે નવોત્થાનની આ બૃહદ પરિકલ્પનાના સંદર્ભમાં આપણે વિચારીએ છીએ

what we found was, India is well represented

ત્યારે ભારતની સારી એવી હાજરી જોઇ શકીએ છીએ,

in innovation, but the innovation that is being done in India

પરંતુ, ભારતમાંજે કંઇ નાવીન્યકરણ થઇ રહ્યું છે, તે

is of a form we did not anticipate, and what we did was

આપણે જે સ્વરૂપમાં જોવા માગીએ છીએ તે સ્વરૂપમાં નહીં,પણ

we called it "invisible innovation."

જેને "અદ્રષ્ય નવોત્થાન" કહી શકાય તે સ્વરૂપમાં છે.

And specifically, there are four types of invisible innovation

ભારતમાંથી બહાર પડતાં નવોત્થાન ચાર પ્રકારમાં

that are coming out of India.

વહેંચી શકાય.

The first type of invisible innovation out of India

જેમાંનું પહેલા પ્રકારનું અદ્રષ્ય નવોત્થાન છે

is what we call innovation for business customers,

જેને આપણે વ્યાવસાયિક ગ્રાહકોમાટેનું કહેશું,

which is led by the multinational corporations,

જેમાં બહુરાષ્ટ્રીય કૉર્પૉરેશન આગળ પડતો ભાગ ભજવી રહ્યાં છે,

which have -- in the last two decades, there have been

તેઓએ, છેલ્લાં ૨૦ વર્ષમાં ૭૫૦ સંશોધન અને વિકાસ કેન્દ્ર

750 R&D centers set up in India by multinational companies

employing more than 400,000 professionals.

Now, when you consider the fact that, historically,

of that multinational company, to have 750 R&D centers

of multinational corporations in India

is truly a remarkable figure.

When we went and talked to the people in those innovation

centers and asked them what are they working on,

they said, "We are working on global products."

They were not working on localizing global products

for India, which is the usual role of a local R&D.

They were working on truly global products,

and Hyderabad R&D centers they are able to produce

તેઓ સમગ્ર દુનિયામાં વેચાતાં હોય તેવાં ઉત્પાદનો

products and services for the world.

તૈયાર કરાવડાવે છે.

But of course, as an end user, you don't see that,

હા,સાંકળની સહુથી છેલ્લી કડી તરીકે આપણને તે દેખાતું નથી

because you only see the name of the company,

not where it was developed.

The other thing we were told then was, "Yes, but, you know,

the kind of work that is coming out of the Indian R&D center

cannot be compared to the kind of work that is coming out

So my coauthor Phanish Puranam, who happens to be

What he did was he looked at those companies

and then he looked at a patent that was filed

so he's now comparing the patents of R&D centers

in the U.S. with R&D centers in India of the same company

ભારતમાંના સંશોધન કેન્દ્રોવડે નોંધાવાયેલ પેટંટની ગુણવત્તા કેવી છે

to find out what is the quality of the patents filed

અને તે અમેરિકામાંના સંશોધન કેંન્દ્રોવડે નોંધાવાયેલ પેટંટની સરખામણીમાં

out of the Indian centers and how do they compare

with the quality of the patents filed out of the U.S. centers?

Interestingly, what he finds is

— and by the way, the way we look at the quality of a patent

he finds something very interesting.

What we find is that the data says

that the number of forward citations of a patent filed

out of a U.S. R&D subsidiary is identical to the number

પેટંટમાં જેટલાં ભાવી સંદર્ભ- અવતરણો જોવા મળે છે એટલાં જ

of forward citations of a patent filed by an Indian subsidiary

ભાવી સંદર્ભ-અવતરણો એ કંપનીની ભારતની પેટાકંપનીવડે

of the same company within that company.

નોંધાવાયેલ પેટંટમાં પણ જોવા મળે છે.

So within the company, there's no difference in the forward

આમ એક જ કંપનીમાં ભાવી સંદર્ભ-અવતરણના દરમાં ભારતની

પેટાકંપની અને તે કંપનીની અમેરિકાની પેટાકંપનીના દરમાં કોઇ

citation rates of their Indian subsidiaries versus

their U.S. subsidiaries.

So that's the first kind of invisible innovation coming out of India.

આમ આ વાત થઇ ભારતમાંથી બહાર પડતાં પહેલા પ્રકારનાં અદ્ર્શ્ય નવોત્થાનની

The second kind of invisible innovation coming out of India

ભારતમાંથી બહાર પડતું બીજા પ્રક્રારનું અદ્રશ્ય નવોત્થાન છે

is what we call outsourcing innovation to Indian companies,

ભારતની કંપનીઓને બહારથી વિકસાવવા આપેલ નવોત્થાન,

where many companies today are contracting

જેમાં કંપનીઓ ભારતની કંપનીઓને

Indian companies to do a major part of their product

પોતાનાં સમગ્ર વિશ્વમાં જેનું વેચાણ થવાનું છે એવાં વૈશ્વિક

development work for their global products

ઉત્પાદનોમાટેની ઉત્પાદન વિકાસ પ્રક્રિયાનો મોટા ભાગના

which are going to be sold to the entire world.

હિસ્સામાટેના કામો સોંપી રહેલ છે.

For example, in the pharma industry, a lot of the molecules

are being developed, but you see a major part of that work

For example, XCL Technologies,

you are not going to know that this is invisible innovation

The third kind of invisible innovation coming out of India

ભારતમાંથી બહાર પડતાં ત્રીજા પ્રકારનાં નવોત્થાનને,ભારતીય પેઢીઓએ

is what we call process innovations, because of an injection

તેમાં દાખલ કરેલી સમજ શક્તિને કારણે, આપણે તેને પ્રક્રિયા નાવીન્યકરણ,

of intelligence by Indian firms.

તરીકે ઓળખીએ છીએ.

Process innovation is different from product innovation.

પ્રક્રિયા નવોત્થાન એ ઉપજ નવોત્થાનથી અલગ છે.

It's about how do you create a new product or develop

નવી પેદાશનાં ઉત્પાદન માટે કે નવી પેદાશના વિકાસ કે

a new product or manufacture a new product,

તેની ઉત્પાદનની પ્રક્રિયાસાથે તેનો સંબંધ છે,

but not a new product itself?

નહીં કે પેદાશ જાતે જ.

Only in India do millions of young people dream

What happens — You know, it's a dead end job in the West,

પશ્ચિમના દેશોમાં તો તે ઉચ્ચ માધ્યમિક શાળા છોડી દેનાર માટે નાછૂટકે

what high school dropouts do.

કરવાનું કામ ગણાય છે.

What happens when you put hundreds of thousands

જ્યારે હ્જારો લાખો, આશાસ્પદ યુવાનોને

of smart, young, ambitious kids

કૉલ સેન્ટરમાં કામ કરવા લગાડો

on a call center job?

તો શું પરિણામ આવે?

Very quickly, they get bored, and they start innovating,

જોતજોતાંમાં તેઓ કંટાળી જાય, અને કંઇ નવું કરવાનું વિચારવા લાગી જાય,

and they start telling the boss how to do this job better, and

અને તેમનાં ઉપરીઓને એ કામ વધારે સારી રીતે કેમ કરી શકાય તે અંગે સુચનો આપવા મંડે,

out of this process innovation comes product innovations,

આમ આ પ્રક્રિયા નાવીન્યકરણમાંથી પેદાશ નાવીન્યકરણ પેદા થાય છે,

which are then marketed around the world.

જે પછીથી સમગ્ર દુનિયામાં વેચાણ કરાય છે.

For example, 24/7 Customer,

you pick up the phone, you can guess

ફૉન ઉપાડતાંની સાથે જ , લઇ શકે છે કે

or predict what this phone call is about.

અનુમાન કરી શકે છે કે આ ફૉન શા માટે કરાયો છે.

It's because of an injection of intelligence into a process

આ શક્ય બન્યું છે, પશ્ચિમમાં જે ઘણા સમયથી મૃતપ્રાય ગણી લેવામાં આવી છે

which was considered dead for a long time in the West.

તેવી પ્રક્રિયામાં દાખલ કરેલી સમજ શક્તિને કારણે.

And the last kind of innovation, invisible innovation

અને છેલ્લા પ્રકારનું ભારતથી બહાર પડતું જોવા મળતું અદ્ર્ષ્ય નવોત્થાન છે

coming out of India is what we call management innovation.

જેને આપણે સંચાલન નવોત્થાન તરીકે ઓળખીએ છીએ.

It's not a new product or a new process

એ નથી તો કોઇ નવી પ્રક્રિયા કે નથી કોઇ નવી પેદાશ,

but a new way to organize work,

પરંતુ એ છે નવી જ રીતની કામની ગોઠવણ,

and the most significant management innovation to come

જેમાં ભારતમાંથી બહાર જોવા મળતું સહુથી વધારે મહત્વનું નવોત્થાન

out of India, invented by the Indian offshoring industry

ભારતની બીજા દેશમાંથી કામ કરી આપતા ઉદ્યોગે વિકસાવેલ

is what we call the global delivery model.

વૈશ્વિક વિતરણ પધ્ધતિ

What the global delivery model allows is, it allows you

વૈશ્વિક વિતરણ પધ્ધતિની મદદથી પહેલાં ભૌગોલિક રીતે સંકેદ્રીત રીતે

to take previously geographically core-located tasks,

ગોઠવાયેલાં કામને નાના ટુકડાઓમાં વહેંચી નાખી,

break them up into parts, send them around the world

તેને વિશ્વના એવા વિસ્તારોમાં મોકલી આપવા

જ્યાં તેના માટેનું કૌશલ્ય અને સાનુકુળ ખર્ચતંત્ર વિકસેલ હોય

where the expertise and the cost structure exists,

and then specify the means for reintegrating them.

ને પછીથી તે બધાંને ફરીથી જોડી આપવાની રીત પણ બતાવવી.

Without that, you could not have any of the other

જો આ નવોત્થાન ન હોત, તો આજે જોવા મળતાં બીજાં કોઇ

invisible innovations today.

અદ્રષ્ય નવોત્થાન જોવા પણ ન મળતાં હોત.

So, what I'm trying to say is, what we are finding

મારા કહેવાનો મતલબ એ છે કે આપણે આ સંશોધનો વડે જોઇ શક્યાં

in our research is, that if products for end users

કે જો પેદાશ એ અંતિમ વપરાશકાર માટે નવોત્થાન હિમશીલાની

is the visible tip of the innovation iceberg,

નજરે દેખાતી ટોચ છે, તો

India is well represented in the invisible, large,

ભારત એ નવોત્થાન હિમશીલાનો અદ્રશ્ય, વિશાળ

submerged portion of the innovation iceberg.

પાણીમાં ડૂબેલ હિસ્સો છે.

Now, this has, of course, some implications,

જો કે આ વિચારધારાની કેટલીક સૂચીતાર્થ અસરો પણ છે,

and so we developed three implications of this research.

અમે આ સંશોધનની એવી ત્રણ સૂચિતાર્થ અસરો વિકસાવી છે.

The first is what we called sinking skill ladder,

પહેલી છે કુશળતાની ડુબતી સીડી.

હવે આપણે આ વર્તાલાપની જ્યાંથી શરુઆત કરી હતી તે આપને યાદ કરાવીશ,

and now I'm going to go back to where I started my

conversation with you, which was about the flight of jobs.

આપણે વાત શરૂ કરી હતી નોકરીઓનાં પલાયન થવા વિષે.

Now, of course, when we first, as a multinational company,

એટલે કે એક બહુરાષ્ટ્રીય કંપની તરીકે આપણે જ્યારે સંશોધન અને વિકાસનાં

decide to outsource jobs to India in the R&D,

કામ ભારતમાં કરાવવાનું નક્કી કરીએ છીએ

what we are going to do is we are going to outsource the

ત્યારે આપણે છેક નીચલી પાયરીની નોકરીઓ પણ

bottom rung of the ladder to India, the least sophisticated jobs,

ભારતમાં જતી રહે તેવું કરી રહ્યાં છીએ,

just like Tom Friedman would predict.

જે રીતે ટૉમ ફ્રાઈડમૅનએ આગાહી કરી હતી.

Now, what happens is, when you outsource the bottom rung

હવે જ્યારે આપણે સહુથી નીચલી પાયરીનું કામ ભારતમાં

of the ladder to India for innovation and for R&D work,

નાવીન્યકરણ કે સંશોધનમાટે આપી દઇએ છીએ ત્યારે

at some stage in the very near future you are going to have

નજદીકનાં ટુંક સમયમાં જ આપણે એ

to confront a problem,

પ્રશ્નનો સામનો કરવો રહ્યો

which is where does the next step

કે આપણી કંપનીમાટે, તે પછીનાં ચરણ માટેનાં

of the ladder people come from within your company?

લોકો ક્યાંથી લાવવાં?

So you have two choices then:

આપણી પાસે બે વિકલ્પ છેઃ

Either you bring the people from India into

ક્યાં તો આપણે ભારતમાંથી લોકો

the developed world to take positions in the next step

લઇ આવીને - પરદેશાગમન દ્વારા- બીજાં ચરણ માટે વિકસિત દેશોમાં લાવી

of the ladder — immigration —

અને વસાવીએ

or you say, there's so many people in the bottom step

અથવા તો, એ બીજાં ચરણનું કામ કરી શકે એવાં

of the ladder waiting to take the next position in India,

એટલાં બધાં લોકો ભારતમાં રાહ જોઇ રહ્યાં છે કે

why don't we move the next step to India?

શા માટે એ બીજું ચરણ જ ભારતમાં ન ખસેડીએ?

What we are trying to say is

અમારા કહેવાનું તાત્પર્ય એ છે કે

that once you outsource the bottom end of the ladder, you --

એક વાર સહુથી નીચેનાં ચરણનું કામ બીજા દેશમાં કરવા માટે આપ્યું,

એટલે પછી તો એ, કુશળતાની ડૂબતી સીડીના

it's a self-perpetuating act, because of the sinking skill ladder,

સિધ્ધાંતને કારણે સ્વયં-શાશ્વત રહી જાતી પ્રક્રિયા બની જાય છે

and the sinking skill ladder is simply the point that

અને કુશળતાની ડૂબતી સીડી એટલે સીધો હિસાબ છે કે

you can't be an investment banker

મૂડીરોકાણ બેન્કર બનવા માટે

without having been an analyst once.

તમારે પહેલાં વિશ્લેષક બનવું જ રહ્યું.

You can't be a professor without having been a student.

વિદ્યાર્થી બન્યા સિવાય અધ્યાપક ના બનાય.

You can't be a consultant without having been a research associate.

સંશોધક સહયોગી બન્યા વગર સલાહકાર ના બનાય

So, if you outsource the least sophisticated jobs,

એટલે કે જો આપણે સહુથી ઓછાં કાર્યદક્ષ કામ જો બીજા દેશમાં કરાવી લઇએ

at some stage, the next step of the ladder has to follow.

તો, કોઇને કોઇ સમયે તો, સીડીનું બીજું ચરણ આવવાનું જ છે.

The second thing we bring up is what we call

અમારે ધ્યાન પર લાવવાની બીજી વાત છે, જેને અમે

the browning of the TMT, the top management teams.

'ઉસંટી' - ઉચ્ચ સંચાલન ટીમ -નો તમંચો કહીએ છીએ, એ છે.

જો આપણએ સંશોધન કૌશલ્યને ભારત કે ચીનમાં રાખવાના હોઇએ

If the R&D talent is going to be based out of India

and China, and the largest growth markets

અને સહુથી મોટાં વિકાસશીલ બજારો પણ

are going to be based out of India and China,

ભારત અને ચીનમાંજ રહેવાનાં હોય

you have to confront the problem that

તો આપણે એ સમસ્યાનો સામનો કરવો જ રહ્યો કે

your top management of the future

આપણી ભવિષ્યની ઉચ્ચ સંચાલન ટીમ પણ

is going to have to come out of India and China,

ભારત અને ચીનમાંથી જ આવશે,

because that's where the product leadership is,

કારણ કે પેદાશ નેતૃત્વ પણ ત્યાં જ છે

that's where the important market leadership is.

જ્યાં સહુથી મહત્વનું બજાર નેતૃત્વ છે.

Right? And the last thing we point out in this slide,

ખરૂં ને? અને જે છેલ્લી વાત કહેવાની છે તે આ સ્લાઇડમાં જોઇ શકાશે

which is, you know, that to this story, there's one caveat.

અને તે એ છે કે, આ આખી વાતમાં એક ચેતવણી પ્રત્યે ધ્યાન દોરવાનું છે.

India has the youngest growing population in the world.

વિશ્વની સહુથી ઓછી ઉમરની પ્રજા ભારતની છે.

This demographic dividend is incredible, but paradoxically,

વસ્તીનો આ લાભ છે તો ક્લ્પનાતીત, પરંતુ તેમાં કામદારોના મૉટાં સમુચ્ચય જૂથનું

there's also the mirage of mighty labor pools.

મૃગજળ પણ વિરોધાભાસી આભા ઉમેરે છે.

Indian institutes and educational system,

ભારતની સંસ્થાઓ અને શિક્ષણ તંત્ર,

with a few exceptions, are incapable of producing students

થોડા અપવાદોને બાદ કરતાં, આ નવોત્થાનના પ્રવાહને

in the quantity and quality needed

અનુરૂપ માત્રા અને ગુણવત્તામાં વિદ્યાર્થીઓ પેદા

to keep this innovation engine going,

કરી શકે એમ નથી,

જેથી,કંપનીઓ તો આ અવરોધને પહોંચી વળવા અવનવા રસ્તાઓ તો અખત્યાર કરે છે,

so companies are finding innovative ways to overcome this,

but in the end it does not absolve the government

પરંતુ, અંતે, તેને કારણે સરકાર યથોચિત શિક્ષણ તંત્રનું માળખું

of the responsibility for creating this educational structure.

બનાવવાની જવાબદારીમાંથી હાથ ન ધોઇ શકે.

So finally, I want to conclude

છેલ્લે, હું તમને એક કંપની,આઇબીઍમ,નો નફો

by showing you the profile of one company, IBM.

બતાવીને વાત પૂરી કરીશ.

As many of you know, IBM has always been considered

આપ સૌ જાણતાં જ હશો કે, છેલ્લાં સોએક વર્ષોથી

for the last hundred years to be one of the most

આઇબીએમ એ સહુથી વધારે અભિનવ અભિગમવાળી કંપનીઓ પૈકી

innovative companies.

એક ગણાય છે.

In fact, if you look at the number of patents filed over history,

આમ તો જો ,અત્યાર સુધી નોંધાવાયેઅલી કુલ પૅટંટની સંખ્યાને ધ્યાનમાં લઇએ

I think they are in the top or the top two or three companies

તો,મારૂં માનવું છે કે, તે એક ખાનગી કંપની તરીકે,અમૅરીકામાં પૅટંટ નોધાયેલીની દ્ર્ષ્ટિએ

in the world of all patents filed in the USA as a private company.

વિશ્વની પહેલી બે કે ત્રણ કંપનીઓમાં તેનું સ્થાન રહે.

Here is the profile of employees of

હવે આપણે આઇઅબીએમ ના છેલ્લાં દસ વર્ષનાં

IBM over the last decade.

કર્મચારી પાશ્વચિત્રને જોઇએ.

In 2003, they had 300,000 employees,

૨૦૦૩માં 300,000 થી 330,000 કર્મચારીઓ હતા,

or 330,000 employees, out of which, 135,000

જે પૈકી અમેરિકામાં ૧૩૫,૦૦૦

were in America, 9,000 were in India.

અને ભારતમાં ૯૦૦૦ કર્મચારીઓ હતાં.

In 2009, they had 400,000 employees, by which time

૨૦૦૯માં ૪૦૦,૦૦૦ કર્મચારીઓ હતાં , જેમાંથી અમેરિકામાંના

the U.S. employees had moved to 105,000,

૧૦૫,૦૦૦ કર્મચારીઓની સંખ્યાની સામે

whereas the Indian employees had gone to 100,000.

ભારતમાંના કર્મચારીઓની સંખ્યા ૧૦૦,૦૦૦ સુધી પહોંચી ગઇ હતી.

Well, in 2010, they decided they're not going to reveal

૨૦૧૦માં તેઓ એ હવે આ આંકડા જાહેર ન કરવાનું નક્કી કર્યું હતું,

એટલે, મારે, બીજા અન્ય માહિતિ સ્રોતને આધારે,

this data anymore, so I had to make some estimates

based on various sources.

થોડો અડસટ્ટો માંડવો પડ્યો.

Here are my best guesses. Okay? I'm not saying

હું જો કે આ બહુ ચોક્કસ આંકડૉ હોય એવો દાવો તો નથી કરતો,

this is the exact number, it's my best guess.

પણ એ મારો શક્ય એટલો ઉત્તમ અડસટ્ટો છે.

It gives you a sense of the trend.

જેના પરથી આપણને હવે પછીનો ઝોક સમજવું સહેલું થઇ રહે.

There are 433,000 people now at IBM, out of which

હાલમાં આઇબીએમમાં ૪૩૩,૦૦૦ કર્મચારીઓ છે, જે પૈકી

98,000 are remaining in the U.S.,

અમેરિકામાં ૯૮,૦૦૦ રહ્યાં છે,

and 150,000 are in India.

જ્યારે ભારતમાં ૧૫૦,૦૦૦ સુધી સંખ્યા પહોંચી છે.

So you tell me, is IBM an American company,

હવે મને કહો કે આઇબીએમ એ અમેરિકન કંપની છે

or an Indian company? (Laughter)
