By now, I'm sure you know

that in just about anything you do in life,

you need numbers.

In particular, though,

some fields don't just need a few numbers,

they need lots of them.

How do you keep track of all those numbers?

ဒီကိန်းတွေ အားလုံးကို ဘယ်လို ခြေရာခံကြမလဲ။

Well, mathematicians dating back

ရှေးခေတ် တရုတ်ပြည်၊ အစောပိုင်းကာလက

as early as ancient China

သင်္ချာပညာရှင်တွေဟာ များပြားလှတဲ့

came up with a way to represent

ကိန်ဂဏန်းတွေကို တပြိုင်နက်

arrays of many numbers at once.

ခင်းကျင်း ဖော်ပြဖို့ နည်းလမ်းတရပ် ဖော်ထုတ်ခဲ့ကြပါတယ်

Nowadays we call such an array a "matrix,"

ယနေ့ခေတ်မှာ ဒီ ကိန်းအခင်းအကျင်းကို ဖြန့်စီကိန်း (Matrix) ခေါ်ပါတယ်

and many of them hanging out together, "matrices".

ပြီးတော့ ယင်းအတွဲလိုက်ကို မေထရစ်တွေလို့ ခေါ်ပါတယ်

Matrices are everywhere.

They are all around us,

even now in this very room.

Matrices really are everywhere, though.

မေထရစ်တွေက တကယ်ပဲ နေရာတိုင်း ရှိပေမဲ့

They are used in business,

ဒါတွေကို ကူးသန်းရောင်းဝယ်ရေး

economics,

စီပွားရေး

cryptography,

physics,

ဝှက်စာကိစ္စ

ရူပဗေဒ

electronics,

အီလက်ထရောနစ် ပညာနဲ့

and computer graphics.

One reason matrices are so cool

မေထရစ်တွေ အစွမ်းထက်ရခြင်း အကြောင်းက

is that we can pack so much information into them

ကွဲပြားတဲ့ ပုစ္ဆာပေါင်းများစွာက အချက်အလက် များစွာကို

and then turn a huge series of different problems

စုပေါင်းလိုက်ပြီး တစ်ခုတည်းသော ပုစ္ဆာအဖြစ်သို့

into one single problem.

So, to use matrices, we need to learn how they work.

It turns out, you can treat matrices

မေထရစ်တွေကို ခင်ဗျားက ပုံမှန်ကိန်းတွေလို

just like regular numbers.

ကိုင်တွယ်နိုင်မယ်

You can add them,

ပေါင်းနိုင်မယ်

subtract them,

နုတ်နိုင်မယ်

even multiply them.

မြှောက်လည်း မြှောက်နိုင်ပါတယ်

You can't divide them,

စားတော့ မစား နိုင်ဘူးပေါ့

but that's a rabbit hole of its own.

ဒါက ၎င်းပိုင် လျှို့ဝှက်ဆန်းကြယ်မှုပေါ့

Adding matrices is pretty simple.

မေထရစ်တွေ ပေါင်းတာ၊ သိပ်ကို ရှင်းပါတယ်

All you have to do is add the corresponding entries

ခင်ဗျားက သူတို့ရဲ့ အစဉ်အတိုင်း သက်ဆိုင်ရာ

in the order they come.

နေရာတွေအလိုက် အကုန်ပေါင်းပါ

So the first entries get added together,

ဒီတော့ ပထမ နေရာတွေအချင်းချင်း ပေါင်း၊

the second entries,

ဒုတိယ နေရာတွေ၊

the third,

all the way down.

တတိယ

ဒီအတိုင်း ဆက်လုပ်သွားပါ။

Of course, your matrices have to be the same size,

ခင်ဗျားရဲ့ မေထရစ်တွေချင်း အဆင့်တူ ဖြစ်ရမှာပါ

but that's pretty intuitive anyway.

ဘယ်လိုပဲဖြစ်ဖြစ် ဒါက အလိုလိုပဲ သိမှာပါ

You can also multiply the whole matrix

စကေလာလို့ ခေါ်တဲ့ ကိန်းတစ်လုံး လုံးနဲ့

by a number, called a scalar.

မေထရစ် တစ်ခုလုံးကိုလည်း မြှောက်နိုင်ပါတယ်

Just multiply every entry by that number.

နေရာတစ်ခုတိုင်းကို ဒီ ကိန်းနဲ့ မြှောက်သွားရုံပါ

But wait, there's more!

ဒါပေမဲ့ ခဏစောင့်ပါ ထပ် လာပါဦးမယ်

You can actually multiply one matrix by another matrix.

မေထရစ်ကို တခြား မေထရစ်နဲ့ တကယ်ပဲ မြှောက်နိုင်ပါတယ်

It's not like adding them, though,

ပေါင်းတာနဲ့တော့ မတူပါဘူး

where you do it entry by entry.

ဒါပေမဲ့ နေရာအလိုက် မြှောက်မှာပါ

It's more unique

ဒါက ပိုထူးခြားပြီး

and pretty cool once you get the hang of it.

အထာကျသွားတာနဲ့ အတော်လေး မိုက်ရောလေ။

Here's how it works.

လုပ်ဆောင်ပုံက ဒီလိုပါ

Let's say you have two matrices.

ခင်ဗျားမှာ မေထရစ်နှစ်ခု ရှိမယ်ဆိုပါစို့

Let's make them both two by two,

ဒီနှစ်ခုလုံးကို ၂ x ၂ အဆင့် ထားပါ

meaning two rows by two columns.

၂ တန်း၂ တိုင် ပေါ့ဗျာ

Write the first matrix to the left

ပထမ မေထရစ်ကို ဘယ်မှာရေးပြီးတော့

and the second matrix goes next to it

ဒုတိယ မေထရစ်ကို ၎င်း နောက်မှာရေးပါ

and translated up a bit,

ပြီးတော့ ဇယားကိုရွှေ့သလို

kind of like we are making a table.

အပေါ်ကို နည်းနည်းတွန်းတင်ပါ

The product we get when we multiply the matrices together

မေထရစ်တွေအချင်းချင်း မြှောက်တဲ့အခါ မြှောက်လဒ်က ကြားမှာ

will go right between them.

We'll also draw some gridlines to help us along.

Now, look at the first row of the first matrix

အခု ပထမ မေထရစ်ရဲ့ ပထမ အတန်းနဲ့

and the first column of the second matrix.

ဒုတိယ မေထရစ်ရဲ့ ပထမ အတိုင်ကို ကြည့်ပါ

See how there's two numbers in each?

တစ်ခုစီက ကိန်းနှစ်လုံးရှိတာ သတိထားမိပါသလား

Multiply the first number in the row

အတန်းက ပထမကိန်းကို အတိုင်က

by the first number in the column:

ဒုတိယ ကိန်းနဲ့ မြှောက်ပါ

1 times 2 is 2.

၁ x ၂ = ၂

Now do the next ones:

အခု နောက်တစ်ခု လုပ်မယ်

3 times 3 is 9.

သုံး သုံးလီ ကိုး

Now add them up:

အခု ဒါတွေကို ပေါင်းပါမယ်

2 plus 9 is 11.

၂ + ၉ = ၁၁

Let's put that number in the top-left position

ဒါကိုရဖို့ အသုံးပြုလိုက်တဲ့ အတန်းတို့ အတိုင်တို့နဲ့

so that it matches up with the rows and columns

အတွဲမိအောင် ဒီကိန်းကို အပေါ်ပိုင်း

we used to get it.

See how that works?

You can do the same thing to get the other entries.

-4 plus 0 is -4.

4 plus -3 is 1.

၄ + (-၃) = ၁

-8 plus 0 is -8.

-၈ + ၀ = - ၈

So, here's your answer.

Not all that bad, is it?

There's one catch, though.

အပေါင်းလိုပဲ သတိထားစရာ

Just like with addition,

တစ်ချက်ရှိပါတယ်

your matrices have to be the right size.

ခင်ဗျားရဲ့ မေထရစ်တွေ အရွယ်အစားမှန်ရပါမယ်

Look at these two matrices.

ဒီ မေထရစ် နှစ်ခုကို ကြည့်ပါ

2 times 8 is 16.

၂ x ၈ = ၁၆

3 times 4 is 12.

၃ X ၄ = ၁၂

wait a minute,

ခဏ နော်

there are no more rows in the second matrix.

ဒုတိယမေထရစ်မှာ အတန်းတွေ နောက်ထပ် မရှိတော့ဘူး

We ran out of room.

မြှောက်စရာ ကုန်သွားပါပြီ

So, these matrices can't be multiplied.

ဒီတော့ ဒီ မေထရစ်တွေကို မမြှောက်နိုင်ပါဘူး

The number of columns in the first matrix

ပထမ မေထရစ်က အတိုင် အရေအတွက်က

has to be the same as the number of rows in the second matrix.

ဒုတိယ မေထရစ်က အတန်း အရေအတွက်အတိုင်း တူညီနေရပါမယ်

As long as you're careful

ခင်ဗျား မေထရစ်ရဲ့

to match up your dimensions right, though,

အဆင့်ကို မှန်အောင် ဂရုစိုက်လိုက်ရင်

it's pretty easy.

ဒါဟာ သိပ်ကို လွယ်ပါတယ်

Understanding matrix multiplication

မေထရစ် မြှောက်ခြင်းကို နားလည်ခြင်းသည်

is just the beginning, by the way.

စကားမစပ်ဗျာ စ လုံးရေ စပါပဲ..

There's so much you can do with them.

ဒါတွေနဲ့ လုပ်နိုင်မှာတွေက အများကြီးမို့ပါ

For example, let's say you want

ဥပမာ ခင်ဗျားက ဝှက်စာတစ်စောင်ကို

to encrypt a secret message.

လုပ်ချင်တယ် ဆိုပါစို့

Let's say it's "Math rules".

"Math rules" ဆိုတဲ့ စာသားဆိုပါစို့

Though, why anybody would want to keep this a secret

ဘယ်သူမဆို၊ ဒါကိုဘာကြောင့် လျှို့ဝှက်ချက် လုပ်ချင်လဲ

is beyond me.

ဆိုတာကတော့ ကျုပ်၊ ဥာဏ်မမှီပါ

Letting numbers stand for letters,

ကိန်းတွေကို စာနဲ့ ကိုယ်စားပြုပါ

you can put the numbers in a matrix

မေထရစ် တစ်ခုမှာ ကိန်းတွေ ထားပြီး

and then an encryption key in another.

တခြားတစ်ခုမှာ လျှို့ဝှက် သော့ ထည့်နိုင်မယ်

Multiply them together

၎င်းတို့ချင်း

and you've got a new encoded matrix.

မြှောက်ပြီး ဝှက်စာလုပ်ထားတဲ့ မေထရစ် အသစ် ရလာပါပြီ

The only way to decode the new matrix

မေထရစ် အသစ်ကို ဝှက်စာဖော်ပြီး

and read the message

ဖတ်ရဖို့ နည်းလမ်းက

is to have the key,

ဒုတိယ မေထရစ်ဖြစ်တဲ့

that second matrix.

သော့ ရှိဖို့ပါ

There's even a branch of mathematics

မေထရစ်တွေကို မပြတ်တမ်း သုံးတဲ့

that uses matrices constantly,

သင်္ချာဘာသာရပ် အခွဲတစ်ခုဖြစ်ပြီး

called Linear Algebra.

Linear Algebra လို့ခေါ်ပါတယ်။

If you ever get a chance to study Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra ကို လေ့လာဖို့ အခွင့်အရေး ရဖူးရင်

do it, it's pretty awesome.

But just remember,

once you know how to use matrices,

you can do pretty much anything.
