Chak Ek’ rose from the underworld to the surface of the eastern sea

چاک یک لە قوڵایی زەوییەوە بۆ ڕووی ئاستی دەریای ڕۆژهەڵات بەرز دەبێتەوە

and on into the heavens.

دواتر دەگاتە بەهەشت.

His brother K’in Ahaw followed.

کان ئاهاو، براکەی، بە دوای دەکەوێت.

Though Chak Ek’ had risen first, K’in Ahaw outshone him,

سەڕەڕای ئەوەی کە چاک یک سەرەتا بەرزدەبێتەوە، بەڵام کین ئاهوا گەشاوەترە،

and the resentful Chak Ek’ descended back to the underworld

بۆیە، چاک ئیک بە دڵشکاوی دەگەڕێتەوە ناو زەوی

to plot against his brother.

In Mayan mythology, Chak Ek’ represents Venus and K’in Ahaw represents the sun.

لە ئەفسانەی ماییەکان، چاک یک وەک ڤینۆس و کین ئاهوا وەک خۆر دەناسرێن.

Known as both the morning and the evening star,

وەک خۆری بەیانیان و شەوان دەناسرێن،

Venus moves through the sky, sometimes visible before sunrise,

ڤینۆس بە درێژایی ئاسمان دەجوڵێت و هەندێک جار پێش خۆرهەڵاتن دەردەکەوێت،

sometimes after sunset, and occasionally not at all.

هەندێک جار دوای خۆرئاوابوون دەردەکەوێت، هەندێک جاریش هەر دەرناکەوێت.

The ancient Maya identified this roughly 584 day cycle

مایا دێرینەکان، ئەم سوڕانەیان بە نزیکەی ٥٨٤ ڕۆژ لە ساڵێک دانابوو

more than a thousand years ago

زیاد لە هەزار ساڵ پێش ئێستا

and it still accurately predicts when and where Venus will appear in the sky

تا ئێستاش بە وردی دەرکەوتنی ڤینۆس لە سەرانسەری جیهان

around the world.

پێشبینی دەکات.

Five of these cycles make up almost exactly eight years,

پێنج لەم دەورانانە دەکەنە ٨ ساڵ،

and the Maya also recognized this larger cycle.

مایەکانیش شارەزای ئەم سوڕانە بوون.

They assigned Chak Ek’ five different forms,

٥ شێوەیان بە چاک ئیک بەخشی بوو،

one for each cycle of Venus, that were repeated every eight years.

هەر دەورانێک لە دەورانەکانی ڤینۆس هەر سوڕانەوەیەکی ٨ ساڵی پێدەچێت.

Within the 584 day cycle, Venus is visible in the evening sky for 250 days,

لە ماوەی ٥٨٤ ڕۆژی ساڵدا، ڤینۆس ئێواران لە ئاسمان بۆ ماوەی ٢٥٠ ڕۆژ دەردەکەوێت،

then disappears for 8 days before reappearing as the Morning Star.

دواتر بۆ ماوەی ٨ ڕۆژ بزر دەبێت و دواتر وەک خۆری بەیانیان دەردەکەوێت.

The ancient Maya ascribed particular significance to this point in this cycle:

مایەکان گرنگی تایبەتییان بەو خاڵە دەدا:

the first time Venus appears before sunrise after being invisible.

بۆ یەکم جار ڤینۆس دەردەکەوێت پێش خۆر هەڵاتن دوای ئەوەی وون دەبێت.

On this day, Chak Ek’ rose again from the underworld,

لەم ڕۆژەدا، چاک ئێک لە ژێرزەمینەوە دەردەکەوێتەوە،

wielding a spearthrower and darts.

کە ڕم و تێرەکانی پێشان دەدات.

To bring discord to the world,

بۆ درووست کردنی کێشە لە جیهان،

he decided to attack his brother and his brother’s allies.

پەلاماری براکەی و هاوپەیمانەکانی دەدات.

His first target was K’awiil, god of sustenance and lightning.

یەکەم ئامانجی، خوای ڕووناکی و ڕۆزیە: کاویلی.

Rising in the late rainy season, Chak Ek’ aimed his spear and struck K’awiil,

چاک ئیک لە کۆتایی وەرزی باران بارین بەرز دەبێتەوە و بە ڕمەکانی کاویلی دەپێکێت.

causing damage to the food and a period of chaos in the social order

ئەمەش دەبێتە درووست بوونی گەڕەلاوژێ و زیان گەیاندن بە خۆراک و تێکچوونی ئارامی

کۆمەڵایەتی تا کاویلی دووبارە لە دایک دەبێتەوە.

until K’awiil was reborn.

584 days after attacking K’awiil,

٥٨٤ ڕۆژ دوای پەلاماردانی کاویلی،

Chak Ek’ turned his attention back to his brother, the Sun.

چاک ئیک دەگەڕیتەوە بۆ چاودێری کردنی براکەی، خۆر.

Each night, the Sun took the form of jaguar

هەموو شەوێک خۆر لە شێوەی جاگوارێک خۆی دەردەخات

and journeyed through the underworld.

لە جیهانی ژێرزەوی دەسوڕێتەوە.

Chak Ek’ speared the jaguar sun as it rose at dawn towards the end of the dry season.

تا کۆتایەکانی وەرزی وشکەساڵیی، چاک ئیک، جاگوارەکە پێش بەرزبوونەوەی بریندار دەکات.

The Sun was wounded, plunging the world into a period of chaos and warfare.

خۆر بریندار دەبێت و زەوی دەکەوێتە دۆخی شەڕ و گەڕەلاوژێ .

Chak Ek’s third victim was the god of maize,

قوربانی سێیەمی چاک ئیک، خواوەندی گەنمەشامییە،

who provided sustenance for all humankind.

کە ڕۆزی گشت مرۆڤەکان دابین دەکات.

Chak Ek’ speared him at the time of the harvest.

چاک ئیک لە کاتی دروێنە برینداری دەکات.

He was buried in the underworld, and maize—the staple of life—

لە ژێر زەوی نێژراوە و دانەوێڵەش، سەرچاوەی سەرەکی ژیان،

was no longer available to Earth’s inhabitants.

چیتر بەردەست نییە بۆ دانیشتوانی زەوی.

But the maize god emerged after three months in the place of new beginnings–

بەڵام خواوەندی گەنمەشامی دوای سێ مانگ لە شوینێکی نوێ دەردەکەوێتەوە:

the eastern cave known as Seven Water Place– bringing food once again to earth.

ئەشکەوتی ڕۆژهەڵات کە بە حەوت ئاو ناسراوە، خۆراک بۆ مرۆڤ دەهێنێت.

When the turtle Ak Na'ak rose in the sky to mark the summer solstice,

کە کیسەڵی ئاک ناک بەرز دەبێتەوە بۆ ئاسمان بۆ ڕاگەیاندنی دەست پێکی هاوین،

Chak Ek’ claimed his fourth victim.

چاک ئیک چوارەم قوربانی خۆی دەکاتە ئامانج.

With the death of this good omen, the Sun, the food supply, and the people

لەگەڵ کوشتنی ئەم، خۆر و دابینکاری خۆراک، خەڵک

were buried within the earth, and the forces of chaos reigned.

دەمرن و گەڕەلاوژێ باڵی بەسەر جیهان دەکێشێت.

But out of the chaos rose a new order established by Hun Ajaw,

بەڵام لەم گەڕەلاوژێیەدا، سیستمێکی نوێ لە لایەن هون ئاجو دروست دەبێت،

one of the hero twins known to all

کە یەکێکە لە پاڵەوانە دوانە ناسراوەکان،

for having vanquished the lords of the underworld.

کە بە لەناوبەری خواوەندەکانی ژێر زەوی دەناسرێن.

A new race of humans was created, made from maize.

نەوەیەکی نوێی مرۆڤ لە دانەوێڵە درووست دەبێت.

This state of balance was not to last, however.

ئەم پارسەنگە تا سەر بەردەوام نابێت، لەگەڵ ئەوەشدا،

Chak Ek’s fifth and final victim was a mysterious stranger from the west,

پێنجەم قوربانی چاک ئیک کەسێکی نەناسراوی ڕۆژئاوایە،

and his death in the heart of the dry season

مردنی ئەو لە ناوەڕاستی وەرزی وشکەساڵی

shook the order established by Hun Ajaw.

زەوی دەلەرزێنێت و سیستەمەکەی هۆن ئاجوا تێکدەشکێنێت.

The gods, the lords, and the maize were buried in the underworld.

خواوەندەکان، شازادەکان و دانەوێڵە لە ناخی زەوی دەنێژرێن.

But this victory for Chak Ek’ would also prove temporary.

بەڵام ئەم سەرکەوتنەی چاک ئیک کاتی دەبێت.

The two brothers, Venus and the Sun, were caught in an endless cycle

سوڕی دوو براکە، زەوی و ڤینۆس، سوڕێکی بێکۆتایە

as they battled for supremacy, re-enacting the same five struggles,

ئەوان بۆ دەسەڵاتداری دەجەنگن و پێنج قوربانییەکە دووبارە دەبێتەوە،

while the world alternated between order and chaos

لە کاتێکدا جیهان لە نێوان گەڕەلاوژێ و ئارامی دێت و دەچێت

with the rising of the Morning Star.
