Now, my daddy, he used to tell me stories.

That will guide you as you discover

It's not going to be in a book.

That became a guiding principle

in the stories that I wanted to tell.

Stories about legacy of who we are.

I used to hear all the time that children are the future,

저는 어린이들이 곧 미래라는 이야기를 항상 들어왔어요.

하지만 그런 상투적인 말은 어떤 의미이고

but what does that cliché really mean

and how are we preparing them?

또, 어떻게 우리 아이들을 준비시키죠?

So I looked for narratives about young people

그래서 저는 젊은이들에 대한 이야기와

and the legacy that they bring as agents of change.

변화의 주역으로써, 그들에게 남겨진 유산에 대해

Today, March 2, 1955 --

오늘, 1955년 3월 2일,

the story that I want to share with you

제가 여러분들과 함께 하고 싶은 이야기는

comes from 1955, March 2.

1955년 3월 2일에 시작됩니다.

그건 16살의 용감한 소녀,

It's about a courageous 16-year-old girl,

Claudette Colvin.

크로뎃 콜빈에 대한 이야기 입니다.

And it comes full circle today

이 이야기는 오늘날 다시 원점으로 돌아갑니다.

because a week ago today, in San Francisco,

일주일 전 샌프란시스코에서

my middle school students,

저의 중학교 학생들이

they performed a program that I had written,

starting with the reenactment of Plessy v. Ferguson

So I'm going to share the story,

and I would like to also share the work I do with it,

as a case study.

I paid my dime at the front of the bus,

and then I ran to the back door

with the rest of the colored kids

so the driver wouldn't take off before we got on.

Also, well, whites don't want us walking down the aisle next to them.

When I got back on the bus,

colored section was full,

so, I sat in the middle section.

I took the last row seat on the left,

wasn't thinking about anything in particular.

I didn't know the girl next to me either, this older girl.

So I just looked out the window.

그래서 그냥 창 밖을 내다보고 있었죠.

Driver went more stops,

버스는 더 많은 정거장에 섰고, 더 많은 사람들이 버스에 탔어요.

more people were getting on, colored and white.

유색인과 백인들.

Pretty soon, no more seats were available.

곧, 버스엔 더이상 자리가 남지 않게 되었어요

"Give me those seats," the driver called out.

"자리에서 일어나!"라고 운전사가 외쳤습니다.

Colored folks just started getting up.

그러자 유색인들이 일어나기 시작했습니다.

White folks started taking their seats,

백인들이 그 자리를 차지했지만 저는 계속 앉아 있었어요.

but I stayed seated.

Girl next to me and the other two across --

제 옆자리 여자 아이도, 건너편의 다른 2명도 계속 앉아 있었죠.

they stayed seated.

I knew it wasn't the restricted area.

저는 거기는 인종 제한이 없는 자리라는 걸 알고 있었거든요.

"Make light on your feet!"

"얼른 일어나라니까!"

Girl next to me got up immediately.

She stood in the aisle, then the other two girls.

제 옆자리 여자 아이가 바로 일어섰죠.

그 아이는 복도로 일어섰고, 그러자 다른 두 여자아이들도 일어섰어요.

But I told myself, this isn't the restricted area.

저는 그 자리는 제한이 있는 자리가 아니라고 혼자 되뇌이고 있었습니다.

The driver, he looked up,

운전사는 위로 올려다보며

거울을 들여다 봤어요.

looked in the window,

that mirror.

운전사가 차를 세우고 해밀톤이라는 임산부가 버스에 탔지요.

He pulled over.

A pregnant lady, Mrs. Hamilton, got on the bus.

She ran to the back and got on,

이 여자분도 뒤로 뛰어서 차에 올랐습니다.

not knowing he was trying to have me relinquish my seat.

운전사가 제 자리를 빼앗으려 하고 있다는 것은 모른체였죠.

And she sat right next to me.

그리고 그녀가 제 옆 자리에 앉은거죠.

"The two of you need to get up so I can drive on."

"너희 둘이 일어나야 내가 계속 운전을 할 수 있을텐데."

"Sir, I paid my dime, I paid my fare.

"저는 돈을 냈어요. 버스비를 냈다니까요.

It's my right, you know, my constitutional --"

이건 제 권리이고, 헙법에는..."

"Constitutional? Ha-ha, let me get the police."

"헌법이라고? 하하하.. 경찰을 불러야겠군."

Well he got off and he flagged down two motormen, and they came.

운전사가 차에서 내려 오토바이에 탄 두 명의 경관을

불러 세웠어요.

And those motormen, they came onto the bus.

그 두 경관이 버스에 올라

Looked at Mrs. Hamilton.

해밀톤을 보고는

"Now the two of you need to get up so the driver can drive on."

"자, 너희 둘이 일어나야 버스가 계속 갈수있다."라고 했어요.

"Sir, I paid my dime. I'm pregnant.

"저는 버스비를 냈고, 저는 임산부에요.

If I were to move right now, I'd be very sick, sir."

지금 제가 일어서면 몸이 아플 듯한데요, 경관님."

"Sir, I paid my dime too, you know, and it's my right,

"저도 버스비를 냈어요. 그리고 이건 제 권리에요.

헌법에서 보장하는 권리라구요.

my constitutional right.

I'm a citizen of the United States.

저는 미국 시민이고

You just read the 13th and 14th Amendment, it'll tell you so.

I know the law. My teacher, she taught it at school."

You see, my teacher, she taught the Constitution,

trying to see what we thinking about.

She would say, "Who are you? Hmm?

Who are you, sitting right here right now?

여기 앉아있는 너는 도대체 누구야?

The person that people think they see from your outside?

너는 사람들이 외견상 본다고 생각하는

Who are you on the inside? How you think?

마음속에 있는 너는 누구지? 어떻게 생각하니?

How you feel? What you believe?

어떤 느낌이지? 네가 믿는건 뭐지?

Would you be willing to stand up for what you believe in

너는 네가 다른 사람들과 다르다고 해서

even if someone wants to hold you back because you're different?

어떤 이가 물러서 있기를 바라더라도

네가 믿고 있는 것을 위해 일어나 대항하겠니?

Do you love your beautiful brown skin, children? Hmm?

얘들아, 너희는 너희들의 아름다운 갈색 피부를 사랑하니?

너희는 미국 시민이니?

Are you American?

What does it mean to be an American? Huh?

미국 시민 이라는 것은 어떤 의미가 있지? 응?

Homework tonight, write me an essay: "What does it mean to be an American?"

오늘밤, 숙제로 글을 써 오너라, 미국시민이 된다는 것은 무슨 의미인가?

You need to know who you are, children!"

얘들아, 너희들은 자신이 누구인지 알아야 한단다! "

My teacher, she would teach us history and current events.

제 선생님은 우리에게 역사와 시사문제 대해 가르쳐 주셨어요.

그것이 현시대의 현상을 이해할 수 있는 방법이고

She said that's how we can understand everything that's going on

and we can do something about it.

그리고 우리가 그것으로 무엇인가 할 수 있을거라고 말씀하셨어요.

"Sir, all I know is I hate Jim Crow.

"경관님, 제가 아는 전부는 짐 크로우를 증오한다는 것 뿐 입니다..

I also know if I ain't got nothing worth living for,

저는 또한, 제가 살만한 가치가 있는 일을 하지 않으면,

I ain't got nothing worth dying for. So give me liberty or give me death!

목숨을 걸만한 일도 없을거라는 사실을 알아요.

그러니 제게 자유가 아니면 죽음을 주세요!

Ouch! I don't care! Take me to jail."

They dragged her off the bus.

Next thing, Claudette Colvin was in a car seat,

Claudette Colvin was the star witness

Her, an 18-year-old teenager

Their case, Browder v. Gayle, went up to the supreme court.

On the heels of Brown v. Board of Education,

Now, why is it we don't know this story?

The Montgomery Bus Boycott --

we hear Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King,

they will forever be lifted up.

이 사람들은 영원히 추앙될 겁니다.

But the role women played in that movement,

the role of Claudette, as an up-stander,

it teaches us important lessons that challenge us today.

What does it mean to be a participant?

참여자가 된다는 것은 어떤 뜻이죠?

민주주의의 책임있는 시민?

A responsible citizen in a democracy?

And lessons of courage and of faith?

용기와 신념이라는 교훈?

So I find freedom movement history that includes young people

그래서 저는 젊은이들이 주도한 자유운동을 찾아봤습니다.

so that they can explore these big ideas

그 결과, 젊은이들이 자신이 선택한 정체성과

of identity, your chosen identity,

주어진 정체성이라는,

and the imposed identity.

정체성에 대한 커다란 문제를 탐구할 수 있기를 바란겁니다.

What does membership in society mean?

사회에서 구성원이란 무엇을 뜻하는걸까요?

Who has it? How do we make amends?

누가 구성원의 자격을 가진거죠? 우리가 어떻게 개선하죠?

Race and violence in America,

미국에서의 인종과 폭력

as well as participatory citizenship.

그리고 참여적 시민성.

So these stories allow me to have conversations,

이런 이야기들은 저로 하여금, 많은 사람들이 언급하기 꺼려하는

to speak the unspeakable,

이루 말할수 없는 것들을 표출할 수 있도록 합니다.

that many are afraid to have.

Once in Eugene, Oregon,

한번은 오레곤 주의 유진에서, 어린 금발의 푸른 눈을 가진 남자 중학생 아이가

a young, blond-haired, blue-eyed boy, middle schooler,

at the end of a performance in the dialogue said,

대화의 장 끝머리에 이러더군요.

"그런데 아웰레씨, 인종차별은 이제 끝난거죠?"

"But Ms. Awele, racism's over, right?"

And not wanting to answer for him, I said,

저는 그 아이에게 대답하고 싶지 않아서 이렇게 말했습니다.

"Turn to the person sitting next to you. See if you can come up with evidence."

"네 옆자리에 앉은 사람을 향해 봐라.

그 대답을 찾을 수 있는지 보렴."

And I gave them four minutes to talk.

그리고 제가 4분의 시간을 줬어요.

Soon, they began to tell stories,

곧바로 그들은 자신들이 사는 지역에서 일어난 인종 차별에 대해 이야기하기 시작했습니다.

evidence of racism in their community.

샌프란시스코의 어떤 고등학생 여자 아이가 제게 편지를 썼어요.

A girl wrote to me, a high school student in San Francisco:

"I was going to skip school

but then I heard we had an assembly, so I came.

And after listening to the students talk

학생들이 하는 이야기를 듣고 당신의 공연을 본 후에,

and seeing your performance,

I thought I should organize my friends

저는 친구들을 모아서

and we should go down to a board meeting

위원회를 만들고

and tell them that want to have advanced classes

우리는 A 부터 G 등급 까지의 필수과목을 위해 고급 과목을 수강하고 싶다고

for A through G requirements."

사람들에게 말하기로 했어요."

So, I tell you this story today

그래서, 저는 이 말을 하고 싶습니다.

in honor of the legacy of young people that have come before,

so that they will have guideposts and signs
