past perfect, and past perfect continuous tense. There’s a lot to study,

This grammar tense can help you explain a past general state, action, or habit.

ဤသဒ္ဒါတင်းမာမှုသည် အတိတ်၏အထွေထွေအခြေအနေ၊ လုပ်ဆောင်ချက် သို့မဟုတ် အလေ့အထတစ်ခုကို ရှင်းပြရန် ကူညီပေးနိုင်သည်။

There's a lot to learn and it's a very important tense, so keep watching.

In this video, I will talk about the 'be' verb

ဒီဗီဒီယိုမှာ 'be' ဆိုတဲ့ ကြိယာ အကြောင်းကို

in the past simple tense.

အရင်တုန်းက ရိုးရိုးရှင်းရှင်း

The 'be' verb in the past simple tense can be used to describe a past general state.

ပြောမယ် ။ past simple tense တွင် 'be' ကြိယာကို past general state ကိုဖော်ပြရန် သုံးနိုင်သည်။

We use the 'be' verbs, ‘was’ and ‘were’ in this tense.

ဒီ tense မှာ 'be', 'was' နဲ့ 'were' ကို သုံးပါတယ်။

Take a look at the examples.

နမူနာများကို ကြည့်ပါ။

‘I was scared.’

'ငါကြောက်တယ်။'

‘James', or he 'was a teacher.’

'ဂျိမ်းစ်' သို့မဟုတ် သူ 'ဆရာဖြစ်ခဲ့သည်။'

‘She was sad.’

'သူမ ဝမ်းနည်းသွားတယ်။'

‘My dog was hungry.’

'ငါ့ခွေးဗိုက်ဆာပြီ။'

‘My dog’ can be ‘it’.

'ငါ့ခွေး' 'အဲဒါ' ဖြစ်နိုင်ပါတယ်။

So for ‘I’, ‘he’, ‘she’, ‘it’, we use the past tense 'be' verb, ‘was’.

ဒါကြောင့် 'I', 'he', 'she', 'it' အတွက် past tense 'be' verb 'was' ကို သုံးပါတယ်။

However, for ‘you’, ‘we’ and ‘they’, we use ‘were’.

သို့သော် 'မင်း'၊ 'ငါ' နှင့် 'သူတို့' အတွက် 'were' ဟု သုံးသည်။

‘You were a good student.’

'မင်းက ကျောင်းသားကောင်းတစ်ယောက်ပါ။'

‘Your parents, or they were at the park.’ and ‘We were at home for two hours.’

'မင်းရဲ့မိဘတွေ၊ ဒါမှမဟုတ် သူတို့က ပန်းခြံမှာရှိတာ။' ပြီးတော့ 'ငါတို့အိမ်မှာ နှစ်နာရီလောက်ရှိပြီ'

In this last sentence, you see that the duration is emphasized.

ဤနောက်ဆုံးစာကြောင်းတွင် ကြာချိန်ကို အလေးပေးကြောင်း သင်တွေ့မြင်ရပါသည်။

ဆက်ကြရအောင်။

Now I will talk about regular verbs in the past simple tense.

ယခု ကျွန်ုပ်သည် ယခင်က ရိုးရှင်းသော တင်းမာမှုများတွင် ပုံမှန်ကြိယာများအကြောင်းကို ပြောပြပါမည်။

Take a look at these examples.

ဤဥပမာများကို ကြည့်ပါ။

‘Liam played a game.’

'Liam က ဂိမ်းတစ်ခုဆော့တယ်။'

Liam is a ‘he’,

Liam သည် 'he' ဖြစ်သည်၊

but really it doesn't matter for regular verbs in the past simple tense.

သို့သော် ယခင်က ရိုးရှင်းသော ကြိယာများတွင် ပုံမှန်ကြိယာများအတွက် အရေးမကြီးပါ။

Because no matter what the subject is, all we have to do is add ‘d’ or ‘ed’

ဘာသာရပ်က ဘာပဲဖြစ်ဖြစ်၊

to the end of the verb.

ကြိယာရဲ့အဆုံးမှာ 'd' သို့မဟုတ် 'ed' ပေါင်းထည့်ရမယ်။

Here the verb is ‘play’, so I added ‘-ed’.

ဒီမှာ ကြိယာက 'play' ဆိုတော့ ငါ '-ed' ထည့်လိုက်တယ်။

‘Liam played a game.’

'Liam က ဂိမ်းတစ်ခုဆော့တယ်။'

‘The car, or it needed gas.’

'ကား၊ ဒါမှမဟုတ် ဓာတ်ငွေ့လိုတယ်။'

The verb here is ‘need’.

ဒီနေရာမှာ ကြိယာက 'လိုအပ်' ပါ။

For the past simple tense, I added ‘-ed’.

အတိတ်ရဲ့ ရိုးရှင်းတဲ့ တင်းမာမှုအတွက် ငါ '-ed' ကို ထည့်လိုက်တယ်။

‘We watched a movie.’

'ငါတို့ ရုပ်ရှင်ကြည့်တယ်။'

Again, an ‘ed’ at the of ‘watch’.

တစ်ဖန် 'ed' မှာ 'စောင့်ကြည့်' သည်။

‘You exercised for an hour.’

'မင်း တစ်နာရီလောက် လေ့ကျင့်ခန်း လုပ်တယ်။'

In this case, the verb is ‘exercise’.

ဤကိစ္စတွင်၊ ကြိယာသည် 'လေ့ကျင့်ခန်း' ဖြစ်သည်။

I only need to add a ‘d’ to make it the past tense.

အတိတ်ကာလဖြစ်အောင် 'd' သာထည့်ရန်လိုသည်။

And finally, ‘They usually worked after school.’

နောက်ဆုံးအနေနဲ့ 'သူတို့က ကျောင်းပြီးရင် အလုပ်လာလုပ်ကြတာများတယ်။'

The verb is ‘work’.

ကြိယာသည် 'အလုပ်' ဖြစ်သည်။

And I added an ‘ed’ to make it in the past tense.

ပြီးတော့ အတိတ်ကာလမှာ 'ed' ကို ထည့်လိုက်တယ်။

The word ‘usually’ shows that this was a habit.

'များသောအားဖြင့်' ဟူသော စကားလုံးသည် ဤအလေ့အထတစ်ခုဖြစ်ကြောင်း ဖော်ပြသည်။

Remember, the past simple tense can be used to show past habits.

အတိတ်က အလေ့အထများကို ပြသရန် အတိတ်ရိုးရိုး တင်းမာမှုကို သတိရပါ။

Let's move on.

ဆက်ကြရအောင်။

Now, I'll talk about irregular verbs in the past simple tense.

အခု၊ အရင်တုန်းက ရိုးစင်းတဲ့ tense မှာ မမှန်ကြိယာတွေအကြောင်း ပြောပြမယ်။

Remember, for regular verbs, we only add ‘d’ or ‘ed’ to make a verb into the past tense.

ပုံမှန်ကြိယာများအတွက်၊ ကျွန်ုပ်တို့သည် အတိတ်ကာလတွင် ကြိယာတစ်ခုပြုလုပ်ရန် 'd' သို့မဟုတ် 'ed' ကိုသာ ပေါင်းထည့်သည်ကို သတိရပါ။

However, for irregular verbs, we have to change the verb in a different way.

သို့သော် မမှန်ကြိယာများအတွက်၊ ကျွန်ုပ်တို့သည် မတူညီသောနည်းဖြင့် ကြိယာကို ပြောင်းလဲရမည်ဖြစ်သည်။

Let's take a look at some examples.

ဥပမာအချို့ကို လေ့လာကြည့်ရအောင်။

‘I ate with my friend.’

'သူငယ်ချင်းနဲ့ စားခဲ့တယ်'

The verb here is ‘ate’.

ဒီမှာ ကြိယာက 'စားတယ်'။

‘ate’ is the past simple tense of ‘eat’.

'စား' သည် 'စား' ၏ ရိုးရှင်းသော အတိတ်ကာလဖြစ်သည်။

The next example says, ‘Nara wrote a story.’

နောက်ဥပမာက 'နရာက ဇာတ်လမ်းတစ်ပုဒ်ရေးတယ်' တဲ့။

The verb is ‘write’.

ကြိယာက 'ရေး' တဲ့။

And because it's irregular to change it into the past tense, we change the verb to ‘wrote’.

၎င်းကို အတိတ်ကာလသို့ ပြောင်းလဲရန် ပုံမှန်မဟုတ်သောကြောင့်၊ ကျွန်ုပ်တို့သည် ကြိယာကို 'ရေးသည်' သို့ ပြောင်းပါသည်။

‘You often came home late.’

'မင်း အိမ်နောက်ကျတတ်တယ်'

The verb here is ‘come’ and it's been changed to ‘came’.

ဤနေရာတွင် ကြိယာသည် 'လာ' ဖြစ်ပြီး ၎င်းကို 'လာ' ဟု ပြောင်းလဲထားသည်။

You'll notice that we had the word ‘often’ to show a habit.

အလေ့အကျင့်တစ်ခုပြသရန် ကျွန်ုပ်တို့တွင် 'မကြာခဏ' ဟူသော စကားလုံးရှိသည်ကို သတိပြုမိပါလိမ့်မည်။

‘We bought a camera.’

'ကျွန်ုပ်တို့ ကင်မရာဝယ်ပြီးပြီ'

The verb here is ‘buy’ and it's been changed to ‘bought’ to show the past simple tense.

ဤနေရာတွင် ကြိယာသည် 'ဝယ်သည်' ဖြစ်ပြီး ၎င်းကို 'အဝယ်' သို့ ပြောင်းပြီး ရိုးရှင်းသော တင်းမာမှုကို ပြသသည်။

And finally, ‘My parents sent me money for a year.’

နောက်ဆုံးအနေနဲ့ 'ကျွန်မမိဘတွေက ကျွန်မကို ပိုက်ဆံတစ်နှစ် ပို့ပေးတယ်။'

Here the verb ‘sent’ is the past tense of ‘send’.

ဤတွင် 'ပို့' သည် 'ပို့' ၏ အတိတ်ကာလဖြစ်သည်။

Here we also see ‘for a year’, this shows duration.

ဤတွင် ကျွန်ုပ်တို့သည် 'တစ်နှစ်' ကိုလည်း တွေ့ရသည်၊ ဤကြာချိန်ကို ပြသည်။

Let's move on.

ဆက်ကြရအောင်။

Now I will talk about the negative form for the 'be' verb in the past simple tense.

ယခုကျွန်ုပ်သည် အတိတ်ရိုးရိုးတင်းမာမှုတွင် 'be' ကြိယာအတွက် အနုတ်လက္ခဏာပုံစံအကြောင်းပြောပါမည်။

Here are some examples.

ဤသည်မှာ ဥပမာအချို့ဖြစ်သည်။

The first one says, ‘I was not hungry.’

ပထမတစ်ယောက်က 'ငါဗိုက်မဆာဘူး' လို့ပြောတယ်။

For the past simple tense, the negative 'be' verb

အတိတ်ရိုးရိုးတင်းမာမှုအတွက်၊ အနှုတ် 'be' ကြိယာ

I f the subject is ‘I’, ‘he’, ‘she’ or ‘it’, we say ‘was not’.

I f ဘာသာရပ်မှာ 'I', 'he', 'she' သို့မဟုတ် 'it'၊ ငါတို့သည် 'မဟုတ်' ဟုဆိုသည်။

For example, ‘I was not’ or ‘she was not’ or the contraction ‘wasn't’.

ဥပမာအားဖြင့် 'ငါမဟုတ်' သို့မဟုတ် 'သူမ' သို့မဟုတ် ကျုံ့ခြင်း 'မဟုတ်'။

‘I wasn't’.

'ငါမဟုတ်ဘူး'

‘She wasn't’.

'သူမမဟုတ်ဘူး'

So let's look again, ‘I was not hungry.’

'ငါ ဗိုက်မဆာဘူး' ကို ပြန်ကြည့်ရအောင်။

‘She wasn't home today.’

'သူ ဒီနေ့ အိမ်မှာ မရှိဘူး'

Now, if the subject is ‘you’, ‘we’ or ‘they’,

အခု အကြောင်းအရာက 'မင်း'၊ 'ငါ' ဒါမှမဟုတ် 'သူတို့' ဆိုရင်

We say ‘were not’ or the contraction ‘weren't’.

ငါတို့က 'မဟုတ်' ဒါမှမဟုတ် ကျုံ့သွားတာ 'မဟုတ်ဘူး' လို့ ငါတို့ပြောကြတယ်။

‘The children, or they were not quiet.’

'ကလေးတွေ၊ ဒါမှမဟုတ် သူတို့မငြိမ်ဘူး။'

‘The children were not quiet.’

'ကလေးတွေက ငြိမ်မနေဘူး။'

And then, ‘The dog', or it was not, or 'wasn't playful.’

ပြီးတော့ 'ခွေး' လား၊ ဒါမှမဟုတ် 'မကစားဘူးလား'

Let's move on.

ဆက်ကြရအောင်။

Now, let's talk about how to form the negative in the past simple tense for non-'be' verbs,

အခု၊ 'be' မဟုတ်တဲ့ ကြိယာအတွက် past simple tense မှာ negative ကို ဘယ်လိုဖွဲ့ရမလဲဆိုတာ ပြောကြည့်ရအောင်၊

regular or irregular.

ပုံမှန် သို့မဟုတ် မမှန်။

Here are some examples.

ဤသည်မှာ ဥပမာအချို့ဖြစ်သည်။

‘I did not like him.’

'ကျွန်တော် သူ့ကို မကြိုက်ဘူး။'

What we do for non-'be' verbs is simply put ‘did not’ after the subject.

'be' မဟုတ်သောကြိယာအတွက် ကျွန်ုပ်တို့လုပ်ဆောင်သောအရာသည် အကြောင်းအရာ၏နောက်တွင် 'မလုပ်' ဟူ၍သာ ရေးခြင်းဖြစ်သည်။

And you'll notice that for the verb, we don't make any changes.

ကြိယာအတွက်၊ ကျွန်ုပ်တို့သည် မည်သည့်ပြောင်းလဲမှုမျှ မလုပ်ကြောင်း သင်သတိပြုမိပါလိမ့်မည်။

We keep the base verb.

ကျွန်ုပ်တို့သည် အခြေခံကြိယာကို စောင့်ရှောက်သည်။

‘He didn't catch the ball.’

'သူ ဘောလုံးမဖမ်းမိဘူး။'

Again, it's ‘he did not’, but here we used a contraction,

နောက်တဖန် ဒါဟာ 'သူမလုပ်ခဲ့ဘူး' ၊ ဒါပေမယ့် ဒီမှာတော့

‘He didn't catch the ball.’

'သူ ဘောလုံးမဖမ်းဘူး' လို့ သုံးပါတယ်။

‘They didn't dance.’

'မကဘူး'

Again, here's the contraction for ‘did not’.

တစ်ဖန် ဤနေရာတွင် 'မလုပ်ခဲ့' အတွက် ကျုံ့သွားပါသည်။

And you'll notice that for the verb, we didn't change it at all.

ကြိယာအတွက်၊ ကျွန်ုပ်တို့ လုံးဝ မပြောင်းလဲကြောင်း သင်သတိပြုမိပါလိမ့်မည်။

Here's an irregular verb, and here's a regular verb, we keep them in the base form.

ဤသည်မှာ မမှန်ကြိယာဖြစ်ပြီး၊ ဤတွင် ပုံမှန်ကြိယာဖြစ်သည်၊ ၎င်းတို့ကို အခြေခံပုံစံဖြင့် သိမ်းထားသည်။

And finally, ‘We didn't think about that.’

နောက်ဆုံးတော့ 'ငါတို့ အဲဒါကို မစဉ်းစားဘူး။'

Again, we simply say ‘did not’ or ‘didn't’.

တစ်ဖန် ကျွန်ုပ်တို့ ရိုးရိုးရှင်းရှင်းပြောသည်မှာ 'မလုပ်' သို့မဟုတ် 'မလုပ်'။

Let's move on.

ဆက်ကြရအောင်။

Now I will introduce two ways to form questions for the past simple tense.

ယခုကျွန်ုပ်သည် past simple tense အတွက် မေးခွန်းများဖွဲ့စည်းရန် နည်းလမ်းနှစ်ခုကို မိတ်ဆက်ပေးပါမည်။

Take a look at the first example.

ပထမဆုံး ဥပမာကို ကြည့်ပါ။

‘He was angry.’

'သူ စိတ်ဆိုးတယ်။'

In this first sentence, we see the 'be' verb ‘was’.

ဤပထမဝါကျတွင် 'be' ကြိယာ 'was' ကို တွေ့သည်။

It's quite easy.

တော်တော်လွယ်ပါတယ်။

All you have to do to turn this into a question is switch the order the first two words.

ဒါကို မေးခွန်းတစ်ခုအဖြစ် ပြောင်းလဲဖို့ သင်လုပ်ရမှာက ပထမစကားလုံးနှစ်လုံးရဲ့ အစီအစဥ်ကို ပြောင်းလိုက်ပါ။

‘Was he angry?’

'သူ ဒေါသထွက်နေသလား'

You can answer by saying ‘Yes, he was.’ or ‘No, he wasn't.’

'ဟုတ်တယ်၊ သူပဲ' လို့ သင်ဖြေနိုင်ပါတယ်။ ဒါမှမဟုတ် 'မဟုတ်ဘူး၊ သူမဟုတ်ဘူး။'

The next sentence also has a 'be' verb.

နောက်ဝါကျမှာ 'be' ကြိယာလည်း ပါပါတယ်။

‘They were comfortable.’

'သူတို့ အဆင်ပြေတယ်။'

So again, switch the first two words.

ဒီတော့ ပထမစကားလုံးနှစ်လုံးကို ပြောင်းပြန်တယ်။

‘Were they comfortable?’

'အဆင်ပြေကြလား'

The answers can be, ‘Yes, they were.’

အဖြေတွေက 'ဟုတ်တယ်၊

or ‘No, they weren't.’

ဒါမှမဟုတ် 'မဟုတ်ဘူး၊ သူတို့မဟုတ်ဘူး'

However, look at the third sentence.

သို့သော် တတိယဝါကျကို ကြည့်ပါ။

‘Sam lived here.’

'Sam က ဒီမှာ နေခဲ့တယ်။'

There is no 'be' verb in this sentence.

ဤဝါကျတွင် 'be' ကြိယာ မရှိပါ။

Instead, we see the action verb ‘lived’.

ယင်းအစား၊ လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်ကြိယာ 'အသက်ရှင်သည်' ကို ကျွန်ုပ်တို့တွေ့မြင်ရသည်။

So what we do is no matter what the subject,

ဒီတော့ ကျွန်တော်တို့ ဘာလုပ်လုပ် ဘာအကြောင်းအရာပဲ ဖြစ်ဖြစ်

we start the question with ‘did’.

'လုပ်ခဲ့တယ်' ဆိုတဲ့ မေးခွန်းကို စတင်ပါတယ်။

‘Did Sam live here?’

'Sam ဒီမှာနေလား'

You'll notice that the verb no longer is in the past tense.

ကြိယာသည် past tense မဟုတ်တော့သည်ကို သတိပြုမိပါလိမ့်မည်။

We use the base form of the verb.

ကျွန်ုပ်တို့သည် ကြိယာ၏ အခြေခံပုံစံကို အသုံးပြုသည်။

‘Did Sam live here?’

'Sam ဒီမှာနေလား'

You can say ‘Yes, he did.’

'ဟုတ်တယ်၊ သူလုပ်ခဲ့တယ်' လို့ ပြောနိုင်ပါတယ်။

or ‘No, he didn't.’

ဒါမှမဟုတ် 'မဟုတ်ဘူး၊ သူက မလုပ်ဘူး။'

The last sentence is similar.

နောက်ဆုံးစာကြောင်းကတော့ အလားတူပါပဲ။

‘They won the contest last year.’

'မနှစ်က ပြိုင်ပွဲမှာ အောင်ခဲ့တာ။'

The verb here is ‘won’, that's not a 'be' verb.

ဒီမှာ ကြိယာက 'အနိုင်ရ' ၊ အဲဒါ 'be' ကြိယာ မဟုတ်ဘူး။

So again, we start the question with ‘did’ .

ဒီတော့ ထပ်ပြီး မေးခွန်းကို 'did' နဲ့ စတယ်။

And then the subject ‘they’, we use the base form of the verb and that's ‘win’.

ပြီးတော့ 'သူတို့' ဘာသာရပ်ကို ကြိယာရဲ့ အခြေခံပုံစံကို သုံးပြီးတော့ အဲဒါ 'အနိုင်ရ' ပေါ့။

‘Did they win the contest last year?’

'မနှစ်က ပြိုင်ပွဲမှာ အနိုင်ရခဲ့တာလား။'

You can say, ‘Yes, they did.’

'ဟုတ်တယ်၊ သူတို့လုပ်ခဲ့တယ်' လို့ ပြောနိုင်ပါတယ်။

or ‘No, they didn't.’

သို့မဟုတ် 'မဟုတ်ဘူး၊ သူတို့မလုပ်ဘူး။'

Let's move on.

ဆက်ကြရအောင်။

Now I'll introduce how to create an answer WH questions in the past simple tense.

ယခု ကျွန်ုပ်သည် ယခင်က ရိုးရှင်းသောအချိန်၌ WH မေးခွန်းများကို အဖြေဖန်တီးနည်းကို မိတ်ဆက်ပေးပါမည်။

Take a look at the board.

ဘုတ်ကိုကြည့်ပါ။

We have some WH words here.

ဤနေရာတွင် WH စကားလုံးအချို့ရှိသည်။

‘What’ ‘When’

'What' 'When'

‘Where’ and ‘Why’

'Where' နှင့် 'Why'

You'll notice that after each WH word comes the word ‘did’.

WH စကားလုံးတစ်ခုစီပြီးနောက် 'did' ဟူသော စကားလုံးပါလာသည်ကို သတိပြုမိပါလိမ့်မည်။

‘What did’ ‘When did’

'ဘာလုပ်တာလဲ' 'ဘယ်တုန်းကလဲ'

‘Where did’ and ‘Why did’.

'ဘယ်မှာနေတာလဲ' 'ဘာလို့လုပ်တာလဲ'။

What comes after that the subject and then the base form of the verb.

အဲဒီဘာသာရပ်ရဲ့နောက်မှာ ကြိယာရဲ့အခြေခံပုံစံက ဘာလဲ။

So, let's take a look.

ဒီတော့ လေ့လာကြည့်ရအောင်။

‘What did you do last night?’

'မနေ့ညက ဘာလုပ်လိုက်တာလဲ'

‘What did you do last night?’

'မနေ့ညက ဘာလုပ်လိုက်တာလဲ'

I can answer by saying something like, ‘I watched a movie.’

'ကျွန်တော် ရုပ်ရှင်ကြည့်ဖူးတယ်' လို့ တစ်ခုခုပြောပြီး ဖြေနိုင်ပါတယ်။

Or ‘I read a book.’

ဒါမှမဟုတ် 'ကျွန်တော် စာအုပ်ဖတ်တယ်။

You'll notice that the answer is in the past simple tense.

အဖြေသည် ရိုးရှင်းသော အတိတ်ကာလဖြစ်သည်ကို သင် သတိပြုမိပါလိမ့်မည်။

‘When did you get home last night?’

Answer in the past simple tense.

And finally, ‘Why did the company hire him?’

Let's take a look at the first sentence.

The subject here is ‘we’.

The correct answer is ‘was’.

အဖြေမှန်က 'ဖြစ်ခဲ့' ပါ။

‘He was at work earlier.’

'သူက အလုပ်မှာ စောစောရောက်တယ်။'

The next sentence says,

နောက်စာကြောင်းက

‘We _____ very happy yesterday.’

'မနေ့က ငါတို့ _____ အရမ်းပျော်တယ်။'

If the subject is ‘we’, remember the be verb is ‘were’.

အကြောင်းအရာက 'ငါ' ဆိုရင် be verb က 'were' ဆိုတာကို သတိရပါ။

‘We were very happy yesterday.’

'မနေ့က အရမ်းပျော်တယ်။'

Next, ‘My parents or they __ worried about me.’

နောက်တစ်ခု၊ 'ငါ့မိဘတွေ ဒါမှမဟုတ် သူတို့ __ ငါ့ကို စိတ်ပူနေတာလား။'

If it's 'they', remember we have to say ‘were’.

'သူတို့' ဆိုရင် 'were' လို့ ပြောရမှာ သတိရပါ။

‘My parents were worried about me.’

'မိဘတွေက ငါ့ကို စိတ်ပူတယ်။'

If I want to use the negative, I can also say ‘My parents weren't worried about me.’

အဆိုးမြင်တာကို သုံးချင်ရင် 'မိဘတွေက ငါ့ကို စိတ်မပူဘူး' လို့လည်း ပြောနိုင်ပါတယ်။

And that's possible.

Now I want you to find the mistake in the next sentence.

အခု နောက်ဝါကျမှာ အမှားကို ရှာစေချင်တယ်။

‘We wasn't good students.’

'ငါတို့ ကျောင်းသားကောင်းတွေ မဟုတ်ခဲ့ဘူး'

We wasn't good students.

ငါတို့က ကျောင်းသားကောင်းမဟုတ်ဘူး။

Can you figure out what's wrong?

ဘာမှားနေလဲ သိနိုင်မလား။

The subject here is ‘we’, so we don't say ‘was not’.

ဒီနေရာမှာ ဘာသာရပ်က 'ငါ' ဆိုတော့ 'မဟုတ်ဘူး' လို့ မပြောဘူး။

We need to say ‘were not’ or the contraction ‘weren't’.

'မဟုတ်' သို့မဟုတ် ကျုံ့ခြင်း 'မဟုတ်' ဟုဆိုလိုသည်။

‘We weren't good students,’ is the correct answer.

'ငါတို့ ကျောင်းသားတွေ ကောင်းကောင်း မဟုတ်ဘူး' ဟူသော အဖြေမှန် ဖြစ်သည်။

The next one says, ‘Were she a teacher?’

နောက်တစ်ယောက်က 'သူမက ဆရာမလား။'

Now, this is a question so the be verb comes at the beginning.

အခု ဒီမေးခွန်းက be verb က အစမှာ လာတာပါ။

That's correct, but the subject here is ‘she’.

မှန်ပါတယ်၊ ဒါပေမယ့် ဒီနေရာမှာ ဘာသာရပ်က 'သူမ' ပါ။

Therefore, we need to start with ‘was’.

ထို့ကြောင့် 'ဖြစ်ခဲ့သည်' ဖြင့် စတင်ရန် လိုအပ်သည်။

‘Was she a teacher?’

'သူမက ဆရာမလား။'

And finally,

နောက်ဆုံးတော့

‘They wasn't at school.’

'သူတို့ ကျောင်းမတက်ဘူး' တဲ့။

The subject is ‘they’, so the answer is

Remember, when changing a regular verb into

ပုံမှန်ကြိယာကို past tense အဖြစ်ပြောင်းသောအခါ

the past tense, we add ‘d’ or ‘ed’ to the end of the

၊ ကြိယာ ၏အဆုံးတွင် 'd' သို့မဟုတ် 'ed' ပေါင်းထည့်သည်ကို

verb.

သတိရပါ။

However, there's a separate rule for words that end in ‘y’.

သို့သော် 'y' ဖြင့်အဆုံးသတ်သောစကားလုံးများအတွက် သီးခြားစည်းမျဉ်းတစ်ခုရှိသည်။

Such as, ‘study’.

'စာကျက်' အစရှိတဲ့၊

We drop the ‘y’ and we add ‘ied’.

'y' ကို လွှတ်ချလိုက်ပြီး 'ied' ကို ထည့်ပါ။

So the correct answer is,

ဒီတော့ အဖြေမှန်က

‘He studied at home.’

'သူအိမ်မှာ စာကျက်တယ်။'

The next sentence says, ‘We __ pencils.’

နောက်စာကြောင်းက 'ငါတို့ __ ခဲတံ' တဲ့။

We want to use negative because it says ‘not use’.

'မသုံးဘူး' လို့ ပြောတဲ့အတွက် အနှုတ်ကို သုံးချင်ပါတယ်။

Remember for the negative, we always use ‘did not’, no matter what the subject.

အနုတ်လက္ခဏာအတွက် သတိရပါ၊ ကျွန်ုပ်တို့သည် မည်သည့်အကြောင်းအရာဖြစ်ပါစေ 'မလုပ်' ကို အမြဲသုံးသည်။

You can also use the contraction ‘didn't’.

ကျုံ့ခြင်း 'မလုပ်' ကိုလည်း သုံးနိုင်သည်။

Now, what do we do to the verb?

ယခုကြိယာကိုကျွန်ုပ်တို့ဘာလုပ်မည်နည်း။

We keep it as ‘is’.

ငါတို့က အဲဒါကို 'ဖြစ်' သလို သိမ်းထားတယ်။

We do not change it.

ကျွန်တော်တို့က မပြောင်းဘူး။

‘We didn't’ or ‘We did not’ use pencils.

'ငါတို့မလုပ်ဘူး' ဒါမှမဟုတ် 'ငါတို့မလုပ်ဘူး' ခဲတံတွေသုံးတယ်။

The next sentence says, ‘His friends or they walk to the gym.’

နောက်စာကြောင်းက 'သူ့သူငယ်ချင်း ဒါမှမဟုတ် အားကစားခန်းမကို လမ်းလျှောက်သွား' လို့ပြောထားတယ်။

What's the past tense of ‘walk’?

'လမ်းလျှောက်ခြင်း' ၏အတိတ်ကာလသည် အဘယ်နည်း။

We simply have to add ‘ed’ because it's a regular verb.

ကျွန်ုပ်တို့သည် ပုံမှန်ကြိယာဖြစ်သောကြောင့် 'ed' ကို ရိုးရိုးထည့်ရပါမည်။

‘His friends walked to the gym.’

'သူ့သူငယ်ချင်းတွေက အားကစားခန်းမကို လျှောက်သွားကြတယ်။'

Now, find a mistake in the next sentence.

အခု နောက်စာကြောင်းမှာ အမှားတစ်ခုရှာပါ။

‘She didn't likes math.’

'သူမက သင်္ချာကို မကြိုက်ဘူး။'

‘didn't’ is correct.

'မလုပ်' တာ မှန်တယ်။

However, remember we keep the verb as ‘is’ in the base form.

သို့သော်၊ ကျွန်ုပ်တို့သည် ကြိယာကို အခြေခံပုံစံတွင် 'is' အဖြစ် ထားရှိသည်ကို သတိရပါ။

So we don't say ‘likes’.

ဒါကြောင့် 'ကြိုက်တယ်' လို့ မပြောဘူး။

We say ‘like’.

ငါတို့က 'ကြိုက်တယ်' တဲ့။

‘She didn't like math.’

'သူမ သင်္ချာကို မကြိုက်ဘူး'

The next sentence says, ‘Did it rained this morning?’

နောက်စာကြောင်းက 'ဒီမနက် မိုးရွာခဲ့တာလား။'

Now this is a question.

အခုက မေးခွန်းတစ်ခုပါ။

In a question, it’s right to start the sentence with ‘Did’.

မေးခွန်းတစ်ခုတွင်၊ ဝါကျကို 'Did' ဖြင့် စတင်ရန် မှန်ကန်ပါသည်။

‘Did it rained?’

'မိုးရွာခဲ့သလား'

Do you notice the mistake?

အမှားကို သတိထားမိပါသလား။

Remember, we do not use the past tense form in the question.

မေးခွန်းတွင် အတိတ်ကာလပုံစံကို မသုံးကြောင်း သတိရပါ။

We use the base form of the verb.

ကျွန်ုပ်တို့သည် ကြိယာ၏ အခြေခံပုံစံကို အသုံးပြုသည်။

‘Did it rain this morning?’

'ဒီမနက် မိုးရွာခဲ့တာလား။'

And finally, ‘They not play the piano.’

နောက်ဆုံးတော့ 'သူတို့က စန္ဒယားမတီးဘူး' တဲ့။

The verb is an action verb.

ကြိယာသည် လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်ကြိယာဖြစ်သည်။

So we need a ‘did’ in front of ‘not’.

ဒါကြောင့် 'မလုပ်' ရဲ့ရှေ့မှာ လုပ်တယ်။

‘They did not play the piano.’

'သူတို့က စန္ဒယားမတီးဘူး။'

Now, I'll talk about irregular verbs in the past simple tense.

Take a look at the first sentence.

ပထမစာကြောင်းကို လေ့လာကြည့်ပါ။

‘He __ to school.’

'သူ __ ကျောင်းသွားမယ်။'

And the verb is ‘run’.

ပြီးတော့ ကြိယာက 'ပြေး'။

‘run’ is an irregular verb, so the past tense form is ‘ran’.

'run' သည် ပုံမှန်မဟုတ်သော ကြိယာဖြစ်သောကြောင့် past tense form မှာ 'ran' ဖြစ်သည်။

‘He ran to school.’

'သူ ကျောင်းကို ပြေးတယ်။'

The next sentence says, ‘We __ flowers.’

နောက်စာကြောင်းက 'ငါတို့ __ ပန်းတွေ' တဲ့။

We want to use the negative because here it says ‘not grow’.

ဒီမှာက 'မကြီးထွားဘူး' လို့ ပြောတဲ့အတွက် အနှုတ်ကို သုံးချင်ပါတယ်။

Remember, no matter what the subject in the negative form,

အဆိုးမြင်ပုံစံတွင် မည်သည့်အကြောင်းအရာကိုမဆို

we say ‘did not’

'မလုပ်'

or ‘didn't’.

သို့မဟုတ် 'မလုပ်' ဟု ကျွန်ုပ်တို့ သတိရပါ။

Then we keep the verb in its base form.

ထို့နောက် ကျွန်ုပ်တို့သည် ကြိယာကို ၎င်း၏အခြေခံပုံစံတွင် ထားရှိပါ။

‘We did not grow’ or ‘We didn't grow flowers.’

The next sentence says, ‘Where __ you teach last year?’

This is a question.

ဒါက မေးခွန်းတစ်ခုပါ။

Again, all we need to put is ‘did’.

တစ်ဖန်၊ ငါတို့အားလုံးသည် 'ပြုသည်' ဖြစ်သည် ။

‘Where did you teach last year?’

'မနှစ်က ဘယ်မှာသင်ပေးတာလဲ။'

It doesn't matter what the subject is.

ဘာအကြောင်းအရာက အရေးမကြီးပါဘူး။

We always go with ‘did’.

ငါတို့က 'လုပ်တယ်' နဲ့ အမြဲသွားနေတယ်။

Next, try to find the mistake in the next sentence.

ထို့နောက် နောက်ဝါကျတွင် အမှားကို ရှာကြည့်ပါ။

‘He didn't sold newspapers.’

'သူက သတင်းစာ မရောင်းဘူး။'

Remember, in the negative, ‘didn't’ is correct for whatever subject there is.

However, we need to keep the verb in its base form.

‘sang’ is the irregular past tense form of ‘sing’.

But in a question, if it starts with ‘did’,

ဒါပေမယ့် မေးခွန်းတစ်ခုမှာတော့ 'did' နဲ့စရင်

we use the base form.

အခြေခံပုံစံကို အသုံးပြုပါတယ်။

‘Did she sing a song?’

'သူမ သီချင်းဆိုဖူးလား။'

And finally, ‘We taked it home.’

Does that sound right?

အသံမှန်သလား။

‘taked’ is not correct.

'ယူ' မမှန်ပါ။

The past tense of ‘take’ is ‘took’.

'ယူ' ၏ အတိတ်ကာလသည် 'ယူ' သည်။

This tense can be used to describe an action that was ongoing in the past.

ဤတင်းမာမှုကို အတိတ်က လုပ်ဆောင်ခဲ့သည့် လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်တစ်ခုကို ဖော်ပြရန်အတွက် အသုံးပြုနိုင်သည်။

It can also be used to describe two actions happening at the same time in the past.

Let's take a look at the first usage of the past continuous tense.

Past Continuous Tense ရဲ့ ပထမဆုံးအသုံးပြုမှုကို ကြည့်ကြရအောင်။

This tense can be used to describe an action that was ongoing in the past.

ဤတင်းမာမှုကို အတိတ်က လုပ်ဆောင်ခဲ့သည့် လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်တစ်ခုကို ဖော်ပြရန်အတွက် အသုံးပြုနိုင်သည်။

Let's take a look at these examples.

ဒီဥပမာတွေကို လေ့လာကြည့်ရအောင်။

‘I was walking in the park in the evening.’

'ညနေက ပန်းခြံထဲမှာ လမ်းလျှောက်နေတယ်။'

So first we start with the subject, ‘I’.

ဒါကြောင့် ဦးစွာ 'ငါ' ဆိုတဲ့ ဘာသာရပ်နဲ့ စပါမယ်။

For I, he, she, and it, we follow with ‘was’.

ငါ ၊ သူ ၊ သူ ၊ အဲဒါ ၊ ငါတို့ က 'ဖြစ်ခဲ့ ' နဲ့ လိုက် တယ် ။

‘I was’

'I was'

And then we add an ‘ING’ to the end of the verb.

ကြိယာ၏အဆုံးတွင် 'ING' ကို ထည့်သည်။

‘I was walking’

'ငါ လမ်းလျှောက်နေတယ်'

Now take a look at the whole sentence.

ကဲ စာကြောင်းတစ်ခုလုံးကို ကြည့်ပါ။

‘I was walking in the park in the evening.’

'ညနေက ပန်းခြံထဲမှာ လမ်းလျှောက်နေတယ်။'

You can see that this was an ongoing action and it happened in the past.

ဤသည်မှာ ဆက်လက်လုပ်ဆောင်နေပြီး အတိတ်တွင် ဖြစ်ပျက်ခဲ့သည်ကို သင်မြင်နိုင်သည်။

Let's look at the next example.

နောက်ဥပမာကို ကြည့်ရအောင်။

‘She was living here last year.’

'သူမ မနှစ်တုန်းက ဒီမှာ နေခဲ့တယ်။'

Here, the subject is ‘she’.

ဒီနေရာမှာ ဘာသာရပ်က 'သူမ' ပါ။

So again we use ‘was’ and then ‘verb-ing’.

ဒါကြောင့် ' was ' နဲ့ ' verb-ing ' ကို ထပ်သုံးပါတယ်။

Here we have another expression that shows that this action was happening in the past.

ဤနေရာတွင် ဤလုပ်ဆောင်ချက်သည် အတိတ်ကဖြစ်ခဲ့ကြောင်း ပြသသည့် နောက်ထပ်အသုံးအနှုန်းတစ်ခုရှိသည်။

‘The dog,’ or ‘it’, ‘was eating dinner five minutes ago.’

'ခွေး' သို့မဟုတ် 'အဲဒါ' 'လွန်ခဲ့သည့်ငါးမိနစ်က ညစာစားနေခဲ့သည်။'

The subject here is ‘the dog’ which can be replaced by the pronoun ‘it’.

ဤနေရာတွင် 'ခွေး' ဟူသော နာမ်စား 'it' ဖြင့် အစားထိုးနိုင်သည်။

And so we follow with ‘was’.

Let's move on.

The past continuous tense is also used to describe an ongoing

past စဉ်ဆက်မပြတ် တင်းမာမှုကိုလည်း

action in the past that was interrupted by another action.

အခြားလုပ်ဆောင်ချက်တစ်ခုက နှောက်ယှက်ခဲ့သည့် အတိတ်တွင် ဆက်လက်လုပ်ဆောင်နေသည့် လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်များကို ဖော်ပြရန်အတွက်လည်း အသုံးပြုပါသည်။

This interrupting action is used in the past simple tense with the word ‘when’.

အနှောင့်အယှက်ဖြစ်စေသော လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်ကို 'အခါ' ဟူသော စကားလုံးဖြင့် အတိတ်ရိုးရှင်းသော အချိန်ကာလတွင် အသုံးပြုသည်။

Let's take a look at this example.

ဒီဥပမာကိုကြည့်ရအောင်။

‘I was playing cards when you called.’

'မင်းခေါ်တုန်းက ငါဖဲရိုက်တယ်။'

Again we start with the subject ‘was’ or ‘were’,

နောက်တဖန် ကျွန်ုပ်တို့သည် ဘာသာရပ် 'was' သို့မဟုတ် 'were' ဖြင့်စပြီး၊

and then ‘verb-ing’,

so this is the action that was ongoing in the past,

The interrupting action in this sentence is ‘you called’.

You'll notice I use the word ‘when’ to show the interrupting action’

And I used it in the past simple tense, ‘called’.

Let's take a look at the next sentence.

This is the interrupting action used with the word ‘when’.

‘We were sleeping when Anne arrived.’

Again we have the ongoing action in the past.

Another usage for the past continuous tense is to talk about two actions that were

အတိတ်အဆက်မပြတ်တင်းမာမှုအတွက် နောက်ထပ်အသုံးပြုမှုမှာ

happening at the same time in the past.

အတိတ်တွင် တစ်ချိန်တည်းဖြစ်ပျက်နေသည့် လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်နှစ်ခုအကြောင်း ပြောဆိုခြင်းဖြစ်သည်။

We use the past continuous tense for both actions with the word ‘while’.

ကျွန်ုပ်တို့သည် လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်နှစ်ခုလုံးအတွက် 'ခဏ' ဟူသော စကားလုံးကို အသုံးပြုပါသည်။

Let's take a look at some examples.

ဥပမာအချို့ကို လေ့လာကြည့်ရအောင်။

The first sentence says, ‘While I was playing soccer, she was watching

me.’

You'll notice that both actions are in the past continuous tense.

‘I was playing soccer’ and ‘She was watching me’.

The word ‘while’ at the beginning shows that these actions were happening at the sametime.

အစတွင် 'ခဏ' ဟူသော စကားလုံးသည် ဤလုပ်ရပ်များ တစ်ချိန်တည်း ဖြစ်ပျက်နေကြောင်း ဖော်ပြသည်။

‘While you were reading, I was preparing dinner.’

Again both actions are expressed in the past continuous tense.

The word ‘while’ shows that they were happening at the same time.

‘While Her husband’ or ‘he’, ‘was driving

Now, you'll notice that in my examples the word ‘while’ comes at the beginning,

I can put the ‘while’ between the two actions.

လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်နှစ်ခုကြားတွင် 'ခဏ' ကို ထားနိုင်သည်။

Or I can also change the sentence around and say,

ဒါမှမဟုတ် 'သူငါ့ကိုကြည့်နေတုန်း၊ ငါဘောလုံးကစားနေတယ်' လို့

‘While she was watching me, I was playing soccer.’

အနီးနားက ဝါကျကိုလည်း ပြောင်းပြီး ပြောနိုင်ပါတယ် ။

So it doesn't matter which action comes first with the ‘while’ if you put it in the

beginning.

Now let's talk about the negative form of the past continuous tense.

အခုတော့ အတိတ်ရဲ့ အဆက်မပြတ် တင်းမာမှုရဲ့ အနုတ်လက္ခဏာပုံစံအကြောင်း ပြောကြည့်ရအောင်။

Here are some examples.

‘She was not reading last night.’

The subject is ‘she’ and so we use ‘was’.

However, before the ‘verb-ing’, we add ‘not’.

I can use a contraction and say,

In this case, the subject is ‘we’ and so we use ‘were’.

Again ‘not’ comes before the ‘verb-ing’.

In this example, the contraction is already there for you,

You'll notice the word ‘when’.

so, ‘When his dad came home he wasn't watching TV.’

so ‘While the game was playing they weren't talking’.

မို့ 'ဂိမ်းဆော့နေချိန်မှာ စကားမပြောဖြစ်ကြဘူး'

They were doing something else.

သူတို့က တခြားတစ်ခုခုလုပ်နေတယ်။

Let's move on now.

အခုပဲ ဆက်သွားကြရအောင်။

Let's talk about how to form ‘be’ verb questions for the past continuous tense.

အတိတ်အဆက်မပြတ်တင်းမာမှုအတွက် 'be' ကြိယာမေးခွန်းများကို မည်သို့ဖွဲ့စည်းရမည်ကို ဆွေးနွေးကြပါစို့။

Take a look at the first statement.

ပထမဆုံးထုတ်ပြန်ချက်ကို ကြည့်ပါ။

It says,

'ဒီမနက် မိုးရွာနေတယ်'

‘It was raining this morning.’

လို့ပြောတယ် ။

In order to turn this into a question, it's quite easy,

ဒါကို မေးခွန်းတစ်ခုအဖြစ် ပြောင်းလဲနိုင်ဖို့က တော်တော်လွယ်ပါတယ်၊

all we have to do is change the order of the first two words.

ပထမစကားလုံးနှစ်လုံးရဲ့ အစီအစဥ်ကို ပြောင်းလဲဖို့ပါပဲ။

Instead of ‘It was’, I now say ‘Was it’ to make it a question.

'အဲဒါ' အစား အခုမေးခွန်းထုတ်ဖို့ 'ဟုတ်လား' လို့ ပြောလိုက်တယ်။

You'll notice that the rest of the words stay in the same place.

ကျန်တဲ့ စကားလုံးတွေက တစ်နေရာတည်းမှာ ရှိနေတာကို သတိထားမိမှာပါ။

‘Was it raining this morning?’

'ဒီမနက် မိုးရွာနေသလား'

You can answer by saying, ‘Yes, it was.’ or ‘No, it wasn't.’

'ဟုတ်ပါတယ်' လို့ ဖြေနိုင်ပါတယ်။ ဒါမှမဟုတ် 'မဟုတ်ဘူး၊ မဟုတ်ဘူး။'

The next statement says,

နောက်တချက်က

‘They were living there when the fire happened.’

'မီးလောင်တုန်းက သူတို့နေထိုင်တယ်' တဲ့။

To turn this into a big question, again we just switched the order of the first two words.

ဒါကို မေးခွန်းကြီးတစ်ခုအဖြစ် ပြောင်းလဲဖို့အတွက် ပထမစကားလုံးနှစ်လုံးရဲ့ အစီအစဥ်ကို ထပ်ပြောင်းလိုက်ပြန်တယ်။

Instead of ‘They were’, we say ‘Were they’.

And again, the rest of the words can stay in the same place.

Now I'll go into how to make WH questions for the past continuous tense.

In this case, ‘were’.

You'll notice that after the subject comes the ‘verb-ing’.

‘They were reading a book’.

လို့ ဖြေနိုင်ပါတယ် ။

The next question says,

နောက်မေးခွန်းတစ်ခုကတော့

‘Where was he working last week?’

'ပြီးခဲ့တဲ့အပတ်က သူဘယ်မှာအလုပ်လုပ်နေတာလဲ' တဲ့။

In this case the subject is ‘he’ and so the be verb to use is ‘was’.

‘Where was he working last week?’

I can say, ‘He was working in Canada.’

'သူက Canada မှာ အလုပ်လုပ်နေတယ်' လို့ ပြောလို့ရပါတယ်။

‘Why was she crying when she finished the book?’

'စာအုပ်​ပြီး​တော့ သူဘာလို့ငို​နေတာလဲ'

In this case, the subject is ‘she’ and so I put ‘was’ after ‘why’.

ဒီနေရာမှာ ဘာသာရပ်က 'သူမ' ဆိုတော့ 'ဘာကြောင့်' ရဲ့နောက်မှာ 'ဖြစ်ခဲ့' လို့ ရေးထားပါတယ်။

I can say, ‘She was crying because the ending was sad.’

‘Who were the children staying with while their mom was working?’

In this case, ‘the children’ is a ‘they’

so we follow 'who' with ‘were’.

'သူတို့အဖေနဲ့ အတူနေခဲ့တယ်' လို့ ပြောနိုင်ပါတယ် ။

In this section, let's do a checkup for the past continuous tense.

ဤအပိုင်းတွင်၊ အတိတ်အဆက်မပြတ်ကာလအတွက် စစ်ဆေးကြည့်ကြပါစို့။

Take a look at the first sentence.

ပထမစာကြောင်းကို လေ့လာကြည့်ပါ။

‘Last night they were blank at school.’

I want you to try to fill in the blank with the negative for the verb ‘stay’.

ကြိယာအတွက် အနုတ်လက္ခဏာ 'နေဖို့' နဲ့ ကွက်လပ်ကို ဖြည့်ဖို့ ကြိုးစားစေချင်တယ်။

'မနေနဲ့'

all you have to do is put ‘not’ and then ‘verb-ing’ after the 'be' verb.

‘They were not staying at school last.’

‘Last night, they were not staying at school.’

The next sentence says,

‘Two days ago you blank soccer.’

'လွန်ခဲ့တဲ့နှစ်ရက်က မင်းဘောလုံးကန်ခဲ့တယ်' တဲ့။

Again try the negative for the verb ‘play’.

နောက်တစ်ကြိမ် 'play' ကြိယာအတွက် အနုတ်လက္ခဏာကို စမ်းကြည့်ပါ။

‘Two days ago blank not play soccer.’

'လွန်ခဲ့တဲ့ နှစ်ရက်လောက်က ဘောလုံးမကစားဘူး.'

In this case, the first thing that's missing is the ‘be’ verb.

ဤကိစ္စတွင်၊ ပထမဆုံး လွဲမှားသောအချက်မှာ 'be' ကြိယာဖြစ်သည်။

If the subject is ‘you’, can you think of which be verb needs to be put in there?

အကြောင်းအရာသည် 'သင်' ဖြစ်ပါက မည်သည့် ကြိယာကို ထည့်သွင်းရမည်ကို သင်စဉ်းစားနိုင်ပါသလား။

So what's the mistake?

Remember the past continuous is for the past.

‘Tomorrow’ is not the past.

'မနက်ဖြန်' သည် အတိတ်မဟုတ်ပါ။

So instead, we need to put a word that shows the past.

For example, I can say, ‘yesterday’.

Take a look at the first example.

။ ပထမဆုံး ဥပမာကို ကြည့်ပါ။

It says, ‘Andrea and John’ blank when they bank hurt.’

'အန်ဒရီယာ နဲ့ ဂျွန်' က သူတို့ ဘဏ်မှာ ထိခိုက်မိရင် ဗလာဖြစ် တယ်' လို့ ဆိုပါတယ်။

Remember ‘when’ shows an interrupting action.

အနှောင့်အယှက်ပေးသည့် လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်ကို ပြသသည့်အခါ 'အခါ' ကို သတိရပါ။

It needs to be used with the past simple tense.

၎င်းကို past simple tense ဖြင့် အသုံးပြုရန် လိုအပ်သည်။

So let's first look at the second blank.

ဒီတော့ ဒုတိယအကွက်ကို အရင်ကြည့်ရအောင်။

‘When they blank hurt’

'When they blank အနာတရ'

What's the past tense of the verb ‘get’?

Now let's take a look at the action that was in progress in the past.

‘Andrea and John’ or ‘they’

'Andrea နှင့် John' သို့မဟုတ် 'သူတို့'

Well what comes after ‘they’?

‘Andrea and John were’

Then remember we need to add -ing to the verb.

Take a look ‘when the game blank’ what's the past tense of ‘start’?

Now let's look at the first part of the sentence.

ကဲ ဝါကျရဲ့ ပထမပိုင်းကို ကြည့်ရအောင်။

The subject is ‘it’.

အကြောင်းအရာကတော့ 'ဒါ' ပါ။

So what ‘be’ verb do we use for 'it'?

ဒါဆို 'be' ကြိယာက 'it' အတွက် သုံးတာလား။

‘was’

‘It was not raining when the game started.’

Now find the mistake in the next sentence.

The subject here is ‘I’ and so the ‘be’ verb ‘was’ is correct.

ဒီနေရာမှာ ဘာသာရပ်က 'ငါ' ဆိုတော့ 'be' ကြိယာ 'was' က မှန်တယ်။

Here there's a contraction, ‘I wasn't’ for ‘I was not’.

ဤနေရာတွင် 'ငါမဟုတ်' 'ငါမဟုတ်' အတွက် ကျုံ့ခြင်းတစ်ခုရှိသည်။

Now the problem is with the verb.

အခု ပြဿနာက ကြိယာနဲ့။

Remember we need to put ‘–ing’ at the end of the verb.

ကြိယာ၏အဆုံးတွင် '–ing' ကို ထည့်ရန် လိုအပ်သည်ကို သတိရပါ။

‘I wasn't studying at the library yesterday.’

That sounds right, but remember we're doing the past continuous tense.

ဒါမှန်ပေမယ့် ငါတို့က အတိတ်ကို အဆက်မပြတ်လုပ်နေတာ သတိရပါ။

Take a look again.

The subject is ‘we’.

We need a ‘be’ verb.

Then what happens?

Remember, we need to add an ‘-ing’ to the end of the verb,

so we take out ‘did’ and say, ‘We were meeting our friends last weekend.’

Take a look at the first example.

When we use ‘while’ in the past continuous tense,

we're showing that two actions happened at the same time in the past

or they were happening at the same time in the past.

So we need to use the past continuous for both actions.

The subject is ‘he’ and so I need to use ‘was cooking’.

ဘာသာရပ်က 'သူ' ဆိုတော့ ' was cooking' လို့ သုံးရမယ်။

‘While he was cooking, his girlfriend was cleaning.’

'သူဟင်းချက်နေတုန်း သူ့ကောင်မလေးက သန့်ရှင်းရေးလုပ်နေတယ်'

Did you get that?

The first part of the sentence is correct.

Now the second part of the sentence.

Notice it's not in the past continuous tense.

သတိပြုရန်မှာ ၎င်းသည် အတိတ်အဆက်မပြတ် တင်းမာမှုတွင် မဟုတ်ပါ။

‘While we get off the plane’

'ငါတို့ လေယာဉ်ပေါ်ကဆင်းတုန်း'

So what we need to do is say, ‘were getting’.

ဒီတော့ ငါတို့လုပ်ရမှာက 'လာပြီ'တဲ့။

‘Jane was looking for us while we were getting off the plane.’

'ငါတို့လေယာဉ်ပေါ်ကဆင်းတုန်း Jane က ငါတို့ကိုလိုက်ရှာနေတယ်'

The next sentence says, 'I was watching TV while my wife sleep’

နောက်ဝါကျမှာ 'I was watching while my wife sleep' ဆိုတဲ့

Again this part of the sentence did not use the past continuous tense.

ဝါကျရဲ့ တစ်စိတ်တစ်ပိုင်းကတော့ past continuous tense ကို မသုံးထားပါဘူး။

My wife is a ‘she’ and so I need to say ‘was sleeping’.

ငါ့မိန်းမက 'သူ' ဆိုတော့ 'အိပ်နေတယ်' လို့ ပြောရမယ်။

‘I was watching TV while my wife was sleeping.’

'ကျွန်မ ဇနီး အိပ်ပျော်နေစဉ် တီဗီကြည့်နေတယ်'

This tense is used to describe an action that took place at a specific time in the past.

ဤတင်းမာမှုကို အတိတ်ကာလတစ်ခုတွင် ဖြစ်ပျက်ခဲ့သော လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်တစ်ခုကို ဖော်ပြရန်အတွက် အသုံးပြုသည်။

This tense can be a little tricky, but don't worry I will guide you through it.

Let's take a look at the first usage of the past perfect tense.

past perfect tense ရဲ့ ပထမဆုံးအသုံးပြုပုံကို ကြည့်ရအောင်။

This tense can be used to describe an action in the past

ဤတင်းမာမှုကို အတိတ်တွင်ဖြစ်ပွားခဲ့သော အခြားလုပ်ဆောင်ချက်တစ်ခုမတိုင်မီ

that happened before another action in the past.

ဖော်ပြရန် ဤတင်းမာမှုကို အသုံးပြုနိုင်သည် ။

Here are some examples.

ဤသည်မှာ ဥပမာအချို့ဖြစ်သည်။

‘I have visited China before I moved there.’

'ကျွန်တော် အဲဒီကို မပြောင်းခင် တရုတ်ပြည်ကို ရောက်ဖူးတယ်။

No matter what the subject you follow with ‘had’,

သင် 'ရှိ' နှင့် လိုက်လျှောက်သည့် ဘာသာရပ်ကို မည်သို့ပင် ဆိုစေ

So that's easy.

ကာမူ လွယ်ကူပါသည်။

‘I had’ ‘Steve had’

Then, we follow with the past participle of the verb.

In this case, it's ‘visited’.

‘I had visited China.’

Now you'll notice that the second verb is in the past simple tense.

‘I moved there.’

'ငါ အဲဒီကို ပြောင်းသွားတယ်။'

And I'll talk about that a little bit more later on.

'စတိဗ် စာအုပ်ကို မဖတ်ခင်ကတည်းက ဝယ်ခဲ့တာ။'

Again, we have the simple tense of ‘read’ which is ‘read’.

တစ်ဖန်၊ ကျွန်ုပ်တို့တွင် 'ဖတ်' ဟူသော ရိုးရှင်းသော တင်းမာမှုရှိသည်။

And finally, ‘The plane had left by the time I got to the airport.’

နောက်ဆုံးတော့ 'လေဆိပ်ရောက်တာနဲ့ လေယာဉ်က ထွက်သွားပြီ' တဲ့။

Again, the first part of this sentence is in the past perfect tense.

တဖန် ဤဝါကျ၏ ပထမအပိုင်းသည် past perfect tense ဖြစ်သည်။

‘The plane had left’.

'လေယာဉ်ထွက်သွားပြီ'

This is the past participle of ‘leave’.

ဤသည်ကား 'ထွက်ခွါခြင်း' ၏အတိတ်အပိုင်းဖြစ်သည်။

The second verb says, ‘I got to the airport.’

ဒုတိယကြိယာက 'ငါလေဆိပ်ရောက်ပြီ' ဟုဆိုသည်။

‘got’ is the past tense of ‘get’.

'get' သည် 'get' ၏ အတိတ်ကာလဖြစ်သည်။

Now what these three sentences have in common is that you'll see, ‘before’.

ယခု ဤစာကြောင်းသုံးကြောင်းတွင် တူညီသောအချက်မှာ 'မီ' ကို မြင်ရပါမည်။

‘before’ or ‘by the time’.

'မီ' သို့မဟုတ် 'အချိန်အားဖြင့်'။

They all mean the same thing.

The verb that is in the past perfect tense happened first.

past perfect tense မှာ ကြိယာက အရင်ဖြစ်သွားတယ်။

The verb that's in the past simple tense happen after.

past simple tense က နောက်ကြိယာ ဖြစ်တတ်ပါတယ်။

So again, for the first example.

ဒီတော့ ပထမ ဥပမာအနေနဲ့ ထပ်ပြောပါရစေ။

‘before I move there’ That happened later.

'ငါအဲဒီကိုမရွှေ့ခင်' အဲဒါက နောက်မှဖြစ်သွားတယ်။

Before that, ‘I had already visited China.’

အဲဒီမတိုင်ခင်က 'ကျွန်တော် တရုတ်ပြည်ကို ရောက်ဖူးပြီးသားပါ။'

Do you understand how that works?

အဲဒါ ဘယ်လိုအလုပ်လုပ်တယ်ဆိုတာ မင်းနားလည်လား။

Let's take a look at the last example.

နောက်ဆုံး ဥပမာကို ကြည့်ရအောင်။

‘When they arrived, we had already started the game.’

'သူတို့ရောက်လာတော့ ငါတို့က ဂိမ်းစနေပြီ'

So maybe they were late or something had happened.

ဒါကြောင့် သူတို့နောက်ကျတာ ဒါမှမဟုတ် တစ်ခုခုဖြစ်ကောင်းဖြစ်နိုင်တယ်။

But ‘When they arrived’, this is the past simple tense.

ဒါပေမယ့် 'သူတို့ရောက်လာတဲ့အခါ'၊ ဒါက ရိုးရှင်းတဲ့ အတိတ်တစ်ခုပါပဲ။

So this happened second.

ဒီတော့ ဒါက ဒုတိယ ဖြစ်သွားတာ။

‘We had already started the game.’

'ကျွန်ုပ်တို့ ဂိမ်းကို စပြီးပါပြီ။'

This action had already started.

ဤလုပ်ဆောင်ချက်သည် စတင်နေပြီဖြစ်သည်။

It started before this action.

Earlier I mentioned that the past perfect tense can be used to describe an action

စောစောက ကျွန်တော်ပြောခဲ့သလိုပဲ past perfect tense ကို အတိတ်မှာဖြစ်ခဲ့တဲ့ လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်တစ်ခုမတိုင်ခင်မှာ ဖြစ်ပျက်ခဲ့တဲ့

that happened in the past before another action in the past.

လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်တစ်ခုကို ဖော်ပြဖို့အတွက် သုံးနိုင်ပါတယ်

We can do the same thing but also emphasize the duration.

။ ကျွန်ုပ်တို့သည် တူညီသောအရာကို လုပ်ဆောင်နိုင်သော်လည်း ကြာမြင့်ချိန်ကိုလည်း အလေးထားပါသည်။

How long that first action happened.

ပထမဆုံး လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်က ဘယ်လောက်ကြာပြီလဲ။

We do this by using four and a duration.

လေးချက်ကြာချိန်ကို အသုံးပြု၍ ကျွန်ုပ်တို့ လုပ်ဆောင်သည်။

Let's take a look.

‘I had owned my computer for two months before it broke.’

'ကျွန်မ ကွန်ပျူတာ မပျက်ခင် နှစ်လလောက် ပိုင်တယ်။'

This is very similar to the first usage.

၎င်းသည် ပထမအသုံးပြုပုံနှင့် အလွန်ဆင်တူသည်။

‘I had’ and the past participle of the verb.

'ငါ' နှင့် ကြိယာ၏အတိတ်အပိုင်း။

This part shows the action that happened earlier in the past.

ဤအပိုင်းသည် အတိတ်က ဖြစ်ပျက်ခဲ့သော လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်ကို ပြသသည်။

The second part, ‘it broke’.

The past simple tense verb shows the action in the past

that happened later than the first action.

However, you'll notice that this sentence has a duration, ‘for two months’.

All I'm doing here is showing how long the first action had been true.

Let's take a look at the next example.

နောက်ဥပမာကို ကြည့်ရအောင်။

‘Jim had been lonely for a long time until he got a puppy.’

'Jim က ခွေးမွေးတဲ့အထိ အထီးကျန်နေတာ ကြာပြီ။

Again, we have subject ‘had’, past participle.

တစ်ဖန် ကျွန်ုပ်တို့တွင် 'ရှိ'၊ အတိတ်ပါဝင်မှု ဘာသာရပ်ရှိသည်။

And then we have the past simple ‘he got a puppy’.

ပြီးတော့ ငါတို့မှာ ရိုးရှင်းတဲ့အတိတ်က 'ခွေးကလေးတစ်ကောင်ရှိတယ်'။

All we're doing here is emphasizing how long first action had been true.

ဤနေရာတွင် ကျွန်ုပ်တို့လုပ်ဆောင်နေသမျှသည် ပထမလုပ်ဆောင်ချက်သည် မည်မျှကြာကြာမှန်ကန်ခဲ့သည်ကို အလေးပေးဖော်ပြခြင်းဖြစ်သည်။

He had been lonely for a long time.

သူ အထီးကျန်နေတာ ကြာပြီ။

That is until the later action, ‘he got a puppy.’

အဲဒါက နောက်ပိုင်းမှာ 'သူ့မှာ ခွေးကလေးတစ်ကောင် ရခဲ့တယ်' တဲ့။

And finally, ‘She and I had been friends for many years before she became my wife.’

နောက်ဆုံးတော့ 'သူနဲ့ငါက ငါ့မိန်းမမဖြစ်ခင် နှစ်ပေါင်းများစွာ သူငယ်ချင်းဖြစ်ခဲ့တယ်' တဲ့။

The first part of the sentence is the past perfect.

ဝါကျ၏ပထမအပိုင်းသည် အတိတ်ပြီးပြည့်စုံသည်။

It happened before she became my wife.

ဇနီးမဖြစ်ခင်ကတည်းက ဖြစ်ပျက်ခဲ့တာ။

But I want to explain how long that had been true for many years.

ဒါပေမယ့် ဘယ်လောက်ကြာကြာ မှန်ကန်ခဲ့တာလဲဆိုတာ ရှင်းပြချင်ပါတယ်။

Let's move on.

ဆက်ကြရအောင်။

Now I'll introduce how to form the negative in the past perfect tense.

အခု ကျွန်တော် past perfect tense မှာ negative ကို ဘယ်လိုပုံစံနဲ့ မိတ်ဆက်ပေးမလဲ။

Take a look at the board.

ဘုတ်ကိုကြည့်ပါ။

The first sentence says, ‘I had not eaten at the restaurant before I went yesterday.’

ပထမစာကြောင်းက 'ငါ မနေ့က မသွားခင် စားသောက်ဆိုင်မှာ မစားဘူး' တဲ့။

Again, we have the past perfect tense here and the past simple tense here.

တစ်ဖန်၊ ဤနေရာတွင် အတိတ်ပြီးပြည့်စုံသော တင်းမာမှုများနှင့် ဤနေရာတွင် အတိတ်ရိုးရှင်းသော တင်းမာမှုရှိသည်။

This one is the action that happened earlier in the past

ဤသည်မှာ အတိတ်က ဖြစ်ပျက်ခဲ့သော လုပ်ရပ်

And this one over here is the action that happened later in the past.

However, because this is the negative, what I'm going to do is add a 'not' between

the ‘had’ and the past participle of the verb.

'had' နဲ့ ကြိယာရဲ့အတိတ်ပါဝင်မှုကြားမှာ 'not' ကို ထည့်လိုက်ပါ။

So I say, ‘I have not eaten’.

ဒါနဲ့ 'မစားရဘူး' လို့ ပြောလိုက်တယ်။

Or I can use the contraction

ဒါမှမဟုတ်

and say, ‘I hadn't eaten at the restaurant before I went yesterday.’

'မနေ့က မသွားခင် စားသောက်ဆိုင်မှာ မစားရဘူး' လို့ ကျုံ့ ပြီး ပြောနိုင်ပါတယ်။

The next sentence is very similar.’

နောက်စာကြောင်းက အရမ်းဆင်တူတယ်။'

‘She had not been to the circus before she went last week.’

'ပြီးခဲ့တဲ့ အပတ်က သူမ မသွားခင် ဆပ်ကပ်ပွဲကို မရောက်ဖူးဘူး။'

Here's the action that happened earlier in the past,

ဤသည်မှာ အတိတ်က ဖြစ်ပျက်ခဲ့သော လုပ်ရပ်

and here's the action that happened later in the past.

ဖြစ်ပြီး၊ ဤသည်မှာ အတိတ်က ဖြစ်ပျက်ခဲ့သော လုပ်ရပ်ဖြစ်သည်။

However, again, because it's negative,

သို့သော် ထပ်မံ၍ အနုတ်လက္ခဏာဖြစ်သောကြောင့်

I put a 'not' between ‘had’ and the past participle of the verb.

ကြိယာ၏ 'had' နှင့် past particip အကြား 'not' ကို ထည့်လိုက်ပါသည်။

Also, I can use the contraction and say, ‘She hadn't been to the circus.’

The next sentence says,

‘The cat hadn't chased the bird for very long before it flew away.’

Remember, we can show duration,

သို့မဟုတ် ပထမလုပ်ဆောင်ချက်သည် မည်မျှကြာကြောင်းကို

or how long the first action was true.

ကျွန်ုပ်တို့ပြသနိုင်သည်ကို သတိရပါ ။

by using 'for' and a duration.

Because this is the negative form,

again, I use 'had not' after the subject and before the past participle of the verb

In this case, the contraction ‘hadn't’ is already there for you.

Now, let's take a look at questions using ‘had’ in the past perfect tense.

ကဲ၊ past perfect tense မှာ 'had' ကိုသုံးတဲ့ မေးခွန်းတွေကို ကြည့်ကြရအောင်။

Take a look at the first sentence.

ပထမစာကြောင်းကို လေ့လာကြည့်ပါ။

It says, ‘She had eaten lunch by noon.’

'နေ့လည်စာ စားပြီးပြီ' ဟုဆိုသည်။

Now, to turn this into a question is quite easy.

အခု ဒီမေးခွန်းကို မေးခွန်းအဖြစ်ပြောင်းဖို့က တော်တော်လွယ်ပါတယ်။

All you have to do is change the order of the first two words.

သင်လုပ်ရမှာက ပထမစကားလုံးနှစ်လုံးရဲ့ အစီအစဥ်ကို ပြောင်းလိုက်ပါ။

So instead of ‘she had’, we say ‘Had she’.

ဒါကြောင့် 'သူမရှိခဲ့' အစား 'Had she' လို့ ဆိုကြပါတယ်။

‘Had she eaten lunch by noon?’

'နေ့လည်စာ စားပြီးပြီလား'

You can say, ‘Yes, she had.’

'ဟုတ်တယ်၊ သူ့မှာရှိတယ်' လို့ ပြောလို့ရပါတယ်။

or ‘No, she hadn't.’

The next sentence says, ‘It had rained before they left.’

နောက်စာကြောင်းက 'သူတို့မထွက်ခင် မိုးရွာခဲ့တယ်' တဲ့။

Again simply switched the order of the first two words.

တစ်ဖန် ပထမစကားလုံးနှစ်လုံး၏ အစီအစဥ်ကို ရိုးရှင်းစွာပြောင်းပြန်သည်။

Instead of ‘It had’, say ‘Had it’ to make a question.

'It had' အစား 'Had it' ဟု မေးခွန်းထုတ်ပါ။

‘Had it rained before they left?’

'သူတို့မထွက်ခင် မိုးရွာခဲ့သလား'

To reply you can say, ‘Yes, it had.’

အကြောင်းပြန်ရန် သင်သည် 'ဟုတ်ကဲ့၊ ရှိခဲ့သည်' ဟု ပြောနိုင်ပါသည်။

or ‘No, it hadn't.’

I'll go into how to form ‘WH’ questions in the past perfect tense.

Let's take a look.

Here we see at the beginning of each question a 'WH' word.

‘where’, ‘who’, ‘what’, and ‘how’.

Let's take a look at the first question.

You'll notice that after each ‘WH’ word, we have ‘had’.

And then the subject and then the past participle of the verb.

‘Where had he traveled before?’

'အရင်က ဘယ်ကိုသွားဖူးလဲ'

The next question says, ‘Who had she talked to before?’

နောက်မေးခွန်းတစ်ခုက 'အရင်က ဘယ်သူနဲ့ စကားပြောဖူးလဲ' တဲ့။

This is the same thing the ‘WH’ word

ဤသည်မှာ 'WH' ဟူသော စကားလုံး

‘had she’ and then the past participle.

'သူမ' နှင့် လွန်ခဲ့သည့် ပါဝင်မှု အတူတူပင် ဖြစ်သည်။

You'll notice here that we have the word ‘before’, but we didn't write a specific point in time.

ကျွန်ုပ်တို့တွင် 'မတိုင်မှီ' ဟူသော စကားလုံးရှိသည်ကို ဤနေရာတွင် သတိပြုမိသော်လည်း၊ တိကျသည့်အချက်ကို အချိန်မီ မရေးနိုင်ခဲ့ပါ။

If you see that it simply means before now.

ရှင်းရှင်းလေးမြင်ရရင် အခုအရင်ဆိုလိုတယ်။

The next question says, ‘What had he eaten before lunch?’

နောက်မေးခွန်းက 'နေ့လည်စာမစားခင် ဘာစားခဲ့တာလဲ' တဲ့။

Again we follow the same formula, however, here it says ‘lunch for you'.

သို့သော် ကျွန်ုပ်တို့သည် တူညီသော ဖော်မြူလာကို လိုက်နာသည်၊ သို့သော် ဤနေရာတွင် 'မင်းအတွက် နေ့လည်စာ' ဟုဆိုသည်။

The last one says,

နောက်ဆုံးတစ်ယောက်က

‘How long had she known him before she dated him?’

'သူနဲ့မတွေ့ခင် ဘယ်လောက်ကြာပြီလဲ'

Again how long ‘had’ + ‘subject’ and then the past participle.

တစ်ဖန် 'ရှိခဲ့' + 'ဘာသာရပ်' ပြီးရင် အတိတ်က ပါဝင်မှု ဘယ်လောက်ကြာခဲ့လဲ။

Let's take a look at how  to answer these questions.

ဒီမေးခွန်းတွေကို ဘယ်လိုဖြေရမလဲဆိုတာ လေ့လာကြည့်ရအောင်။

‘Where had he traveled before?’

'အရင်က ဘယ်ကိုသွားဖူးလဲ'

‘He had traveled to Europe.’

'သူ ဥရောပကို ခရီးထွက်ခဲ့တယ်'

is one possible answer.

ဖြစ်နိုင်သောအဖြေတစ်ခုဖြစ်သည်။

‘Who had she talked to before?’

'အရင်က ဘယ်သူနဲ့ စကားပြောဖူးလဲ'

Here I can say, ‘She had talked to her brother.’

'သူမ အစ်ကိုနဲ့ စကားပြောဖူးတယ်' လို့ ပြောလို့ရတယ်။

‘What had he eaten before lunch?’

'နေ့လည်စာ မစားခင် ဘာစားခဲ့လဲ'

‘He had eaten sushi before lunch.’

'နေ့လည်စာမစားခင် ဆူရှီစားဖူးတယ်'

And finally, ‘How long had she known him before she dated him?’

နောက်ဆုံးအနေနဲ့ 'သူနဲ့ မချိန်းတွေ့ခင် ဘယ်လောက်ကြာမှ သိခဲ့တာလဲ။'

‘She had known him for three years.’

'သူနဲ့ သိတာ သုံးနှစ်ရှိပြီ' တဲ့။

That is one possible answer.

ဒါက ဖြစ်နိုင်ချေရှိတဲ့ အဖြေတစ်ခုပါပဲ။

Now let's take a look at some practice exercises for the basic usage of the past perfect tense.

Take a look at the first sentence.

ပထမစာကြောင်းကို လေ့လာကြည့်ပါ။

‘I blank for six hours before I had a break.’

'ငါမနားခင် ခြောက်နာရီလောက် ဗလာကျင်းနေတယ်'

The verb here is ‘work’.

ဤနေရာတွင် ကြိယာသည် 'အလုပ်' ဖြစ်သည်။

Remember, we need to say ‘I had’.

'I had' လို့ ပြောရမှာ သတိရပါ။

No matter what the subject is, say ‘had’.

ဘာအကြောင်းအရာပဲဖြစ်ဖြစ် 'ရှိ' လို့ ပြောပါ။

And then, you take the past participle of the verb.

ထို့နောက် ကြိယာ၏အတိတ်ပါဝင်မှုကို သင်ယူပါ။

In this case, we would say ‘worked’.

ဒီကိစ္စမှာ 'အလုပ်လုပ်တယ်' လို့ ပြောမယ်။

‘I had worked for six hours before I had a break.’

For the next sentence, I want you to try the negative form.

နောက်ဝါကျအတွက်၊ အဆိုးမြင်ပုံစံကို စမ်းကြည့်စေချင်တယ်။

‘We blank TV before we listened to the radio.’

'ငါတို့ရေဒီယိုနားမထောင်ခင် တီဗွီဗလာကျင်းနေတယ်'

Remember, for the negative form, we say ‘had not’

အနှုတ်ပုံစံအတွက်၊ ကျွန်ုပ်တို့သည် 'မရှိ'

or we use the contraction, ‘hadn't’.

သို့မဟုတ် ကျုံ့ခြင်း 'မရှိ' ကိုသုံးသည်ဟု သတိရပါ။

‘We hadn’t’.

And then, we need the past participle.

Now find the mistake in the next sentence.

Well, we have the subject here and for the negative, ‘hadn't’ is correct.

ကောင်းပြီ၊ ငါတို့မှာ ဘာသာရပ်ရှိတယ်၊ အနုတ်သဘောက 'ရှိခဲ့' က မှန်တယ်။

However, we need the past participle of the verb ‘be’.

သို့သော်၊ ကျွန်ုပ်တို့သည် ကြိယာ 'be' ၏အတိတ်ပါဝင်မှုကို လိုအပ်သည်။

So the correct answer is,

ဒီတော့ အဖြေမှန်က

‘Reggie hadn't been to Mexico before he went to Peru.’

So the answer is,

Now, find the mistake in the next sentence.

It's a little bit longer so it might take you a while.

နည်းနည်းပိုရှည်တဲ့အတွက် အချိန်နည်းနည်းကြာနိုင်ပါတယ်။

‘They had been known each other for ten years before they had their first fight.’

Can you find the mistake?

Well, we have the subject and ‘had’, but check this out.

ကောင်းပြီ၊ ငါတို့မှာ 'ရှိ' တဲ့ အကြောင်းအရာရှိတယ်၊ ဒါပေမယ့် ဒါကို ကြည့်ပါ။

There are two past participles here.

ဤနေရာတွင် ယခင်ပါဝင်မှု နှစ်ခုရှိသည်။

We need to get rid of one of them.

သူတို့ထဲက တစ်ယောက်ကို ငါတို့ ဖယ်ပစ်ရမယ်။

We can take out this verb and say, ‘They had known each other for ten years

ဒီကြိယာကို ဖယ်ထုတ်ပြီး 'သူတို့

before they had their first fight.’

The next sentence says, ‘I have played soccer for many years before I scored my first goal.’

But remember, in the past perfect tense, we need to say ‘had’.

It's a great tense that helps you express an ongoing action

အတိတ်တွင် ဆက်လက်လုပ်ဆောင်နေသည့် လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်တစ်ခုကို အတိတ်မှ အခြားအမှတ်တစ်ခုအထိ ဆက်လက်

in the past continuing up to another point in the past.

One usage of the past perfect continuous tense is to talk about an ongoing action in the

You can use ‘for’ and a duration to talk about

For example, ‘I had been’, ‘Chuck had been’,

And ‘Tom and Kim had been.’

'Tom နှင့် Kim ဖြစ်ခဲ့သည်'။

And then we follow with the verb ‘-ing’.

‘waiting’.

Now this is the ongoing action that happened first.

Again, four and two hours shows the duration.

The second part says, ‘it arrived’.

This verb is in the past simple tense.

Therefore, that is the second action.

It's the action that this first action happened until this action happened,

No matter what’s the subject, we say ‘had been’ and then verb ‘-ing’.

Again, I can show how long Chuck had been cooking by saying ‘for an hour’, showing

why something happened.

အဘယ်ကြောင့် တစ်စုံတစ်ရာ ဖြစ်ခဲ့သည်ကို ပြသည်။

We can use ‘because’ or ‘so’ to show the cause and effect.

Here, I'll explain.

The first part of the sentence is in the past tense.

‘Jason was tired,’ However, we see ‘why?’

Well, because, ‘he had been jogging’.

ဘာလို့လဲ ဆိုတော့ 'သူက ရွရွပြေးတယ်' ဆိုတော့လေ။

The second part of this sentence is in the past perfect continuous tense.

ဤဝါကျ၏ ဒုတိယအပိုင်းသည် past perfect continuous tense ဖြစ်သည်။

‘he had been’, remember no matter what the subject,

'သူဖြစ်ခဲ့သည်'၊ မည်သည့်အကြောင်းအရာကိုမဆို သတိရပါ၊

we follow with ‘had been’ and jogging – ‘verb -ing’.

ကျွန်ုပ်တို့သည် 'ဖြစ်ခဲ့သည်' နှင့် ပြေးလွှားခြင်း - 'ကြိယာ' ကို မှတ်သားပါ။

‘he had been jogging’ This shows why Jason was tired.

The next sentence says, ‘The pavement’ or it ‘was wet because

Why was the pavement wet?

'မိုးရွာနေလို့ လူသွားလမ်းက စိုနေတယ်။'

In this sentence, we see a little difference.

ဒီစာကြောင်းမှာ အနည်းငယ် ကွဲပြားတာကို တွေ့ရတယ်။

‘The children had been playing’ Again, this is the past perfect continuous

'ကလေးတွေ ကစားဖူးတယ်' တဖန် ဒါက ပြီးပြည့်စုံတဲ့ အဆက်မပြတ်

tense.

တင်းမာမှုပါ။

‘had been playing’ The second part says, ‘the room was a mess’.

'ကစားဖူးတယ်' ဒုတိယအပိုင်းက 'အခန်းက ရှုပ်တယ်' လို့ပြောတယ်။

So here, instead of ‘because’ like the first two sentences,

ဒါကြောင့် ဒီနေရာမှာ ပထမစာကြောင်းနှစ်ကြောင်းလိုပဲ 'ဘာလို့လဲဆိုတော့' အစား

I used ‘so’.

'so' ကိုသုံးတယ်။

So the order has been changed but the meaning is the same.

ဒါကြောင့် အမိန့်ကို ပြောင်းထားပေမယ့် အဓိပ္ပါယ်ကတော့ အတူတူပါပဲ။

This, ‘the children had been playing’ is why the room was a mess.

'က​လေး​တွေ​ဆော့​နေ​တာ' က​တော့ အခန်း​က ရှုပ်​ပွ​နေ​တာ​ပဲ။

This is the cause and this is the effect.

ဤကား အကြောင်းတရား ဖြစ်၍ ဤသည်ပင် ဖြစ်ပေ၏။

Let's move on.

ဆက်ကြရအောင်။

Now let's go into the negative form of the past perfect continuous tense.

အခု ပြီးပြည့်စုံတဲ့ စဉ်ဆက်မပြတ် တင်းမာမှုရဲ့ အဆိုးမြင်ပုံစံထဲကို သွားကြည့်ရအောင်။

Here are some examples.

ဤသည်မှာ ဥပမာအချို့ဖြစ်သည်။

‘I had not been working for a day before I quit.’

'အလုပ်မဆင်းခင် တစ်ရက်အလိုမှာ ငါအလုပ်မလုပ်ဘူး'

So no matter what the subject ‘I’, ‘you’, ‘she’, or ‘it’,

ဒါကြောင့် 'ငါ'၊ 'မင်း'၊ 'သူမ' ဒါမှမဟုတ် 'အဲဒါ'

just like in the affirmative, we say ‘had’, but after the ‘had’, in the negative form,

မှာ ဘာပဲဖြစ်ဖြစ် 'ရှိ' လို့ အခိုင်အမာပြောပေမယ့် 'ရှိ' ပြီးရင် အနှုတ်ပုံစံနဲ့ '

we add ‘not’. ‘had not’

ပေါင်း' ၊ မဟုတ်ဘူး' 'မရှိ'

‘had not’ or you can use the contraction ‘hadn't’.

'မရှိ' သို့မဟုတ် 'ရှိခဲ့' ဟူသော အဓိပ္ပါယ်ကို သင်သုံးနိုင်သည်။

Which is a combination of ‘had’ and ‘not’ together.

'ရှိခဲ့' နှင့် 'မ' တို့ကို ပေါင်းစပ်ထားသည်။

‘I had not been working’ The rest of the sentence is the same.

'I had not been working' ကျန်ဝါကျက အတူတူပါပဲ။

‘been + verb -ing’ ‘I had not been working for a day before

'been + verb -ing' 'အလုပ်မဆင်းခင် တစ်ရက်အလိုမှာ အလုပ်မလုပ်ဘူး

I quit.’

The next sentence says, ‘You had not been cutting onions for long

before you cried.’

Again, the ‘not’ goes between ‘had’ and ‘been’.

တစ်ဖန် 'မ' သည် 'ရှိ' နှင့် 'ဖြစ်' ခြင်းကြားတွင် ရှိသည်။

‘She hadn't been studying for long when she fell asleep.’

Here, we have the contraction.

You'll notice that in the first two sentences, I used ‘before’.

And in the last two, I used ‘when’.

Either one can be used to show when the first action stopped.

ပထမလုပ်ဆောင်ချက်ရပ်သွားသည့်အခါ ပြသရန် တစ်ခုစီကို အသုံးပြုနိုင်သည်။

Let's move on.

Now let's go into how to form basic questions in the past perfect continuous tense.

အခု အတိတ်မှာ ပြီးပြည့်စုံတဲ့ စဉ်ဆက်မပြတ် တင်းမာမှုမှာ အခြေခံမေးခွန်းတွေကို ဘယ်လိုဖွဲ့စည်းရမလဲဆိုတာ လေ့လာကြည့်ရအောင်။

Here is the first example.

ဒါက ပထမဆုံး ဥပမာပါ။

‘He had been driving all day before he arrived.’

'သူ မရောက်ခင် တနေကုန် ကားမောင်း နေတာ။'

Now, to turn this into a question, all we have to do is change the order of the first

two words.

‘Had he been driving all day before he arrived?’

The next sentence says, ‘The dog had been barking because it was

In this case, the subject is ‘The dog’.

To turn this into a question, again, we switch the order.

You'll notice that in the question, the rest of the words stay in the same place.

Now, in the first question, we're asking how long an action happened,

or how long it was ongoing in the past.

Now, I'll introduce how to form WH questions in the past perfect continuous tense.

Take a look at these examples.

You'll notice that they all start with a WH word.

And that's the same pattern we follow for all of these sentences.

ပြီးတော့ အဲဒီစာကြောင်းအားလုံးအတွက် တူညီတဲ့ပုံစံပါပဲ။

So ‘Why had you been studying so much?’

ဒါနဲ့ 'မင်းဘာလို့ဒီလောက်လေ့လာခဲ့တာလဲ'

I can answer by saying, ‘I had been studying so much because I have

'ငါက စာမေးပွဲ ရှိလို့ အရမ်းလေ့လာနေခဲ့တာ' လို့ ဖြေနိုင်ပါတယ်

a test.’

I can say, ‘I had been traveling through Asia.’

'ကျွန်တော် အာရှတစ်ခွင် ခရီးထွက်ဖူးတယ်' လို့ ပြောလို့ရပါတယ်။

‘What had they been playing before they played soccer?’

'ဘောလုံးမကစားခင် သူတို့ဘာတွေကစားခဲ့လဲ။'

I can answer, ‘They had been playing baseball.’

'သူတို့ ဘေ့စ်ဘောကစားဖူးတယ်' လို့ ဖြေနိုင်ပါတယ်။

And finally, ‘Who had she been talking to before she

နောက်ဆုံးတော့ 'သူမ

left home?’

အိမ်ကမထွက်ခင် ဘယ်သူနဲ့စကားပြောဖူးလဲ'

I can answer, ‘She had been talking to her boyfriend.’

'သူမ ချစ်သူနဲ့ စကားပြောဖူးတယ်' လို့ ဖြေနိုင်ပါတယ်။

Let's move on.

Let's start a checkup for the past perfect continuous tense.

ပြီးပြည့်စုံသော စဉ်ဆက်မပြတ် တင်းမာမှုအတွက် စစ်ဆေးမှုကို စတင်ကြပါစို့။

Take a look at the first sentence.

ပထမစာကြောင်းကို လေ့လာကြည့်ပါ။

It says, ‘They __ for a long time before they went home.’

'သူတို့ __ အိမ်မပြန်ခင် အချိန်အတော်ကြာနေပြီ' လို့ ဆိုပါတယ်။

Try to fill in the blank with the verb ‘work’ in this tense.

ဤတင်းမာမှုတွင် ကြိယာ 'အလုပ်' ဖြင့် ကွက်လပ်ဖြည့်ရန် ကြိုးစားပါ။

Remember, no matter what the subject, we follow the subject with ‘had been’.

So we say, ‘They had been’.

ဒီတော့ ငါတို့က 'သူတို့ဖြစ်ဖူးတယ်' တဲ့။

What happens to the verb?

ကြိယာ ဘာဖြစ်သွားတာလဲ။

Remember, we add ‘-ing’.

ငါတို့ '-ing' ထည့်သည်ကို သတိရပါ။

So the sentence is, ‘They had been working for a long time before they went home.’

ထို့ကြောင့် 'သူတို့ အိမ်မပြန်မီ အချိန်အတော်ကြာ အလုပ် လုပ်ခဲ့ကြသည်' ဟူသော စာကြောင်းဖြစ်သည်။

Now, take a look at the second sentence.

အခု ဒုတိယဝါကျကို ကြည့်ပါ။

I want you to use the negative.

အဆိုးမြင်တာကို သုံးစေချင်တယ်။

‘I __ TV for a year before I started again.’

'ငါ __ တီဗီပြန်မစခင် တနှစ်လောက်အလို။'

Remember, the negative form for this tense starts with the subject

ဤတင်းမာမှုအတွက် အနုတ်လက္ခဏာပုံစံသည် အကြောင်းအရာ

and then ‘had not been’.

နှင့် စတင်ပြီးနောက် 'မဖြစ်ခဲ့ဖူး' သည်ကို သတိရပါ။

Or I can use the contraction ‘hadn't’.

ဒါမှမဟုတ် 'had't' လို့ သုံးနိုင်တယ်။

‘I hadn't been’ And then again, verb ‘-ing’.

'I hadn't been' နဲ့ နောက်တဖန် ကြိယာ '-ing'။

‘I hadn't been watching TV for a year before I started again.’

'ကျွန်တော် တီဗီ မကြည့်ဖြစ်တာ တစ်နှစ်လောက်ရှိပြီ နောက်တစ်ခေါက် ပြန်စကြည့်တယ်။

Now, try to find the mistake in this next sentence.

အခု နောက်ဝါကျမှာ အမှားကို ရှာကြည့်ပါ။

‘Gina and I hadn't been do any work before we started.’

'ငါနဲ့ Gina က အလုပ်မစခင်ကတည်းက ဘာမှမလုပ်ဖူးဘူး။'

What's the error?

အမှားကဘာလဲ။

You'll notice that the verb does not have an ‘-ing’.

ကြိယာမှာ '-ing' မပါတာကို သတိပြုမိပါလိမ့်မယ်။

To make the sentence correct, we must say, ‘Gina and I hadn't been doing

ဝါကျကို မှန်ကန်စေရန်၊ 'Gina နဲ့ ငါဟာ

any work before we started.’

ငါတို့မစခင်ကတည်းက ဘာမှ မလုပ်ခဲ့ဘူး' လို့ ပြောရပါမယ်။

Now, find the mistake here.

အခုဒီမှာ အမှားကိုရှာပါ။

‘He had be watching YouTube because he had some free time.’

'သူဟာ အားလပ်ချိန်ရှိလို့ YouTube ကို ကြည့်ရတာ။'

‘He had’, that's correct, but we need to change ‘be’ to been’.

'သူ' ရှိတယ်၊ ဒါမှန်တယ်၊ ဒါပေမယ့် ငါတို့ 'ဖြစ်' ဖို့ လိုတယ်။

And ‘watching’ is correct.

'ကြည့်ခြင်း' သည် မှန်၏။

So, ‘He had been watching YouTube because he had some free time.’

ဒါကြောင့် 'သူဟာ အားလပ်ချိန်ရှိလို့ YouTube ကို ကြည့်ခဲ့တာ။'

Let's move on.

ဆက်ကြရအောင်။

Now, let's move on to another checkup of the past perfect continuous tense.

အခု၊ အတိတ်ရဲ့ ပြီးပြည့်စုံတဲ့ စဉ်ဆက်မပြတ် တင်းမာမှုကို နောက်ထပ် စစ်ဆေးကြည့်ရအောင်။

Take a look at the first example.

ပထမဆုံး ဥပမာကို ကြည့်ပါ။

It says, ‘The company __ employees because they worked hard.’

'ကုမ္ပဏီ __ ဝန်ထမ်းတွေက အလုပ်ကြိုးစားတဲ့အတွက်ကြောင့်ပါ' လို့ ဆိုပါတယ်။

Use the verb ‘promote’ in the past perfect continuous tense.

past perfect continuous tense တွင် 'promote' ကြိယာကိုသုံးပါ။

Remember, no matter what the subject, we follow with ‘had been’.

ဘယ်အကြောင်းအရာပဲဖြစ်ဖြစ်၊ ငါတို့ဟာ 'ဖြစ်ခဲ့ဖူးတယ်' ဆိုတာကို သတိရပါ။

So we say, ‘The company had been’ and then verb ‘-ing’, so ‘promoting’.

ဒီတော့ 'ကုမ္ပဏီက' နဲ့ ကြိယာ '-ing' ဆိုတော့ 'promoting' လို့ပြောတာ။

‘The company had been promoting employees because they worked hard.’

'ကုမ္ပဏီက အလုပ်ကြိုးစားတဲ့အတွက် ဝန်ထမ်းတွေကို ရာထူးတိုးပေးတာပါ။'

The next example says, ‘I __ your emails for a while because they went to the spam

နောက်ဥပမာတစ်ခုက 'ငါ __ မင်းရဲ့အီးမေးလ်တွေကို spam ဖိုဒါထဲရောက်သွားတဲ့အတွက် ခဏတာဘဲ

folder.’

။'

Here, try to use the negative form with the verb ‘get’.

ဤတွင်၊ ကြိယာ 'get' ဖြင့် အနုတ်ပုံစံကို သုံးကြည့်ပါ။

Remember, in the negative form, we say ‘had not been getting’

အနုတ်လက္ခဏာပုံစံဖြင့် 'မရရှိ'

Or the contraction ‘hadn't been getting’.

သို့မဟုတ် ကျုံ့ခြင်း 'မရရှိ' ဟု ဆိုသည်ကို သတိရပါ။

‘I hadn't been getting your emails for a while because they went to the spam folder.’

'မင်းရဲ့အီးမေးလ်တွေကို စပမ်းဖိုင်တွဲထဲရောက်သွားတဲ့အတွက် ငါမင်းရဲ့အီးမေးလ်တွေကို မရရှိတာကြာပြီ'

Now look for the mistake in the next sentence.

အခု နောက်ဝါကျမှာ အမှားကို ရှာကြည့်ပါ။

‘I had been work a lot because I needed the money.’

'ငါ ပိုက်ဆံလိုလို့ အလုပ်တွေ အများကြီး လုပ်ခဲ့ရတာ။'

What's the mistake?

ဘာအမှားလဲ?

Remember, we need to add ‘-ing’ to the verb.

ကြိယာတွင် '-ing' ထည့်ရန် လိုအပ်သည်ကို သတိရပါ။

‘I had been working a lot because I needed the money.’

'ငါ ပိုက်ဆံလိုလို့ အလုပ်တွေ အများကြီး လုပ်ခဲ့ရတယ်။'

The last sentence says, ‘He has been smoking because he was stressed.’

နောက်ဆုံးစာကြောင်းက 'သူဟာ စိတ်ဖိစီးမှုကြောင့် ဆေးလိပ်သောက်နေတာ' တဲ့။

Can you find the mistake?

အမှားကို ရှာတွေ့နိုင်မလား။

Remember, we're practicing the past perfect continuous.

အတိတ်ကို ပြီးပြည့်စုံအောင် စဉ်ဆက်မပြတ် လေ့ကျင့်နေတယ်ဆိုတာ သတိရပါ။

In this case, we need ‘had’ after the subject, not ‘has’.

ဤကိစ္စတွင်၊ ကျွန်ုပ်တို့သည် ဘာသာရပ်၏နောက်တွင် 'ရှိ' ရန် လိုအပ်သည်၊ 'ရှိ' သည်မဟုတ်ပေ။
