In this video, I will introduce the past tense. We’ll talk about the past simple, past continuous,

This grammar tense can help you explain a past general state, action, or habit.

The 'be' verb in the past simple tense can be used to describe a past general state.

. ഭൂതകാല സിമ്പിൾ ടെൻസിലെ 'be' ക്രിയ ഒരു ഭൂതകാല പൊതു അവസ്ഥയെ വിവരിക്കാൻ ഉപയോഗിക്കാം.

We use the 'be' verbs, ‘was’ and ‘were’ in this tense.

ഈ ടെൻസിൽ നമ്മൾ 'be', 'was', 'were' എന്നീ ക്രിയകൾ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.

Take a look at the examples.

ഉദാഹരണങ്ങൾ നോക്കുക.

‘I was scared.’

'ഞാൻ ഭയന്നു പോയി.'

‘James', or he 'was a teacher.’

'ജെയിംസ്', അല്ലെങ്കിൽ അവൻ 'ഒരു അധ്യാപകനായിരുന്നു.'

‘She was sad.’

'അവൾ സങ്കടപ്പെട്ടു.'

‘My dog was hungry.’

‘My dog’ can be ‘it’.

So for ‘I’, ‘he’, ‘she’, ‘it’, we use the past tense 'be' verb, ‘was’.

However, for ‘you’, ‘we’ and ‘they’, we use ‘were’.

In this last sentence, you see that the duration is emphasized.

Now I will talk about regular verbs in the past simple tense.

Take a look at these examples.

ഈ ഉദാഹരണങ്ങൾ നോക്കുക.

‘Liam played a game.’

'ലിയാം ഒരു ഗെയിം കളിച്ചു.'

Liam is a ‘he’,

ലിയാം ഒരു 'അവൻ' ആണ്,

but really it doesn't matter for regular verbs in the past simple tense.

എന്നാൽ യഥാർത്ഥത്തിൽ ഭൂതകാല സിമ്പിൾ ടെൻസിലെ സാധാരണ ക്രിയകൾക്ക് ഇത് പ്രശ്നമല്ല.

Because no matter what the subject is, all we have to do is add ‘d’ or ‘ed’

to the end of the verb.

Here the verb is ‘play’, so I added ‘-ed’.

‘The car, or it needed gas.’

The verb here is ‘need’.

For the past simple tense, I added ‘-ed’.

‘We watched a movie.’

Again, an ‘ed’ at the of ‘watch’.

‘You exercised for an hour.’

'നിങ്ങൾ ഒരു മണിക്കൂർ വ്യായാമം ചെയ്തു.'

In this case, the verb is ‘exercise’.

ഈ സാഹചര്യത്തിൽ, ക്രിയ 'വ്യായാമം' ആണ്.

I only need to add a ‘d’ to make it the past tense.

ഭൂതകാലമാക്കാൻ എനിക്ക് ഒരു 'd' ചേർത്താൽ മാത്രം മതി.

And finally, ‘They usually worked after school.’

ഒടുവിൽ, 'അവർ സാധാരണയായി സ്കൂൾ കഴിഞ്ഞ് ജോലി ചെയ്യുമായിരുന്നു.'

The verb is ‘work’.

'ജോലി' എന്നാണ് ക്രിയ.

And I added an ‘ed’ to make it in the past tense.

ഒപ്പം ഭൂതകാലത്തിൽ ഉണ്ടാക്കാൻ ഞാൻ ഒരു 'ed' ചേർത്തു.

The word ‘usually’ shows that this was a habit.

ഇത് ഒരു ശീലമായിരുന്നുവെന്ന് 'സാധാരണ' എന്ന വാക്ക് കാണിക്കുന്നു.

Remember, the past simple tense can be used to show past habits.

Now, I'll talk about irregular verbs in the past simple tense.

ഇപ്പോൾ, ഞാൻ ഭൂതകാല സിമ്പിൾ ടെൻസിലെ ക്രമരഹിതമായ ക്രിയകളെക്കുറിച്ച് സംസാരിക്കും.

Remember, for regular verbs, we only add ‘d’ or ‘ed’ to make a verb into the past tense.

ഓർമ്മിക്കുക, സാധാരണ ക്രിയകൾക്ക്, ഒരു ക്രിയയെ ഭൂതകാലത്തിലേക്ക് മാറ്റാൻ ഞങ്ങൾ 'd' അല്ലെങ്കിൽ 'ed' മാത്രമേ ചേർക്കൂ.

However, for irregular verbs, we have to change the verb in a different way.

Let's take a look at some examples.

‘I ate with my friend.’

The verb here is ‘ate’.

‘ate’ is the past simple tense of ‘eat’.

'തിന്നുക' എന്നത് 'തിന്നുക' എന്നതിന്റെ ഭൂതകാല ലളിതമാണ്.

The next example says, ‘Nara wrote a story.’

അടുത്ത ഉദാഹരണം പറയുന്നു, 'നര ഒരു കഥ എഴുതി.'

The verb is ‘write’.

'എഴുതുക' എന്നാണ് ക്രിയ.

And because it's irregular to change it into the past tense, we change the verb to ‘wrote’.

ഭൂതകാലത്തിലേക്ക് മാറ്റുന്നത് ക്രമരഹിതമായതിനാൽ, ഞങ്ങൾ ക്രിയയെ 'എഴുതിയത്' എന്നാക്കി മാറ്റുന്നു.

‘You often came home late.’

'നീ പലപ്പോഴും വൈകിയാണ് വീട്ടിലെത്തുന്നത്.'

The verb here is ‘come’ and it's been changed to ‘came’.

ഇവിടെ ക്രിയ 'വരൂ' ആണ്, അത് 'വന്നു' എന്നാക്കി മാറ്റി.

You'll notice that we had the word ‘often’ to show a habit.

‘We bought a camera.’

The verb here is ‘buy’ and it's been changed to ‘bought’ to show the past simple tense.

And finally, ‘My parents sent me money for a year.’

Here the verb ‘sent’ is the past tense of ‘send’.

ഇവിടെ 'send' എന്ന ക്രിയ 'send' എന്നതിന്റെ ഭൂതകാലമാണ്.

Here we also see ‘for a year’, this shows duration.

ഇവിടെ നമ്മൾ 'ഒരു വർഷത്തേക്ക്' എന്നും കാണുന്നു, ഇത് ദൈർഘ്യം കാണിക്കുന്നു.

Let's move on.

Now I will talk about the negative form for the 'be' verb in the past simple tense.

ഭൂതകാല സിമ്പിൾ ടെൻസിലുള്ള 'be' ക്രിയയുടെ നെഗറ്റീവ് രൂപത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് ഞാൻ ഇപ്പോൾ സംസാരിക്കും.

Here are some examples.

The first one says, ‘I was not hungry.’

ആദ്യത്തെയാൾ പറയുന്നു, 'എനിക്ക് വിശന്നില്ല.'

For the past simple tense, the negative 'be' verb

കഴിഞ്ഞ സിമ്പിൾ ടെൻസിൽ, നെഗറ്റീവായ 'be' ക്രിയ

I f the subject is ‘I’, ‘he’, ‘she’ or ‘it’, we say ‘was not’.

I f വിഷയം 'ഞാൻ', 'അവൻ', 'അവൾ' അല്ലെങ്കിൽ 'അത്' ആണ്, നമ്മൾ പറയുന്നത് 'ആയിരുന്നില്ല' എന്നാണ്.

For example, ‘I was not’ or ‘she was not’ or the contraction ‘wasn't’.

ഉദാഹരണത്തിന്, 'ഞാൻ ആയിരുന്നില്ല' അല്ലെങ്കിൽ 'അവൾ ആയിരുന്നില്ല' അല്ലെങ്കിൽ 'ആയിരുന്നില്ല' എന്ന സങ്കോചം.

So let's look again, ‘I was not hungry.’

Now, let's talk about how to form the negative in the past simple tense for non-'be' verbs,

Here are some examples.

‘I did not like him.’

What we do for non-'be' verbs is simply put ‘did not’ after the subject.

നോൺ-'ബീ' ക്രിയകൾക്കായി നമ്മൾ ചെയ്യുന്നത് സബ്ജക്റ്റിന് ശേഷം 'ചെയ്തില്ല' എന്ന് വെക്കുന്നു.

And you'll notice that for the verb, we don't make any changes.

ക്രിയയ്‌ക്കായി ഞങ്ങൾ മാറ്റങ്ങളൊന്നും വരുത്തുന്നില്ലെന്ന് നിങ്ങൾ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കും.

We keep the base verb.

‘He didn't catch the ball.’

'അവൻ പന്ത് പിടിച്ചില്ല.'

Again, it's ‘he did not’, but here we used a contraction,

‘He didn't catch the ball.’

Here's an irregular verb, and here's a regular verb, we keep them in the base form.

Again, we simply say ‘did not’ or ‘didn't’.

Now I will introduce two ways to form questions for the past simple tense.

ഭൂതകാല സിമ്പിൾ ടെൻസിന് ചോദ്യങ്ങൾ രൂപപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതിനുള്ള രണ്ട് വഴികൾ ഞാൻ ഇപ്പോൾ അവതരിപ്പിക്കും.

Take a look at the first example.

ആദ്യ ഉദാഹരണം നോക്കുക.

‘He was angry.’

'അവൻ ദേഷ്യപ്പെട്ടു.'

In this first sentence, we see the 'be' verb ‘was’.

ഈ ആദ്യ വാചകത്തിൽ, 'be' എന്ന ക്രിയ 'was' ആയി കാണുന്നു.

It's quite easy.

ഇത് വളരെ എളുപ്പമാണ്.

All you have to do to turn this into a question is switch the order the first two words.

ഇത് ഒരു ചോദ്യമാക്കി മാറ്റാൻ നിങ്ങൾ ചെയ്യേണ്ടത് ആദ്യത്തെ രണ്ട് വാക്കുകൾ ക്രമത്തിൽ മാറ്റുക എന്നതാണ്.

‘Was he angry?’

You can answer by saying ‘Yes, he was.’ or ‘No, he wasn't.’

'അതെ, അവൻ ആയിരുന്നു' എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ട് നിങ്ങൾക്ക് ഉത്തരം നൽകാം. അല്ലെങ്കിൽ 'ഇല്ല, അവൻ ആയിരുന്നില്ല.'

The next sentence also has a 'be' verb.

‘They were comfortable.’

So again, switch the first two words.

‘Were they comfortable?’

The answers can be, ‘Yes, they were.’

or ‘No, they weren't.’

അല്ലെങ്കിൽ 'ഇല്ല, അവർ ആയിരുന്നില്ല.'

However, look at the third sentence.

‘Sam lived here.’

There is no 'be' verb in this sentence.

Instead, we see the action verb ‘lived’.

So what we do is no matter what the subject,

we start the question with ‘did’.

'ചെയ്തു' എന്ന ചോദ്യത്തിൽ തുടങ്ങും.

‘Did Sam live here?’

You'll notice that the verb no longer is in the past tense.

ക്രിയ ഇനി ഭൂതകാലത്തിലല്ലെന്ന് നിങ്ങൾ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കും.

We use the base form of the verb.

ഞങ്ങൾ ക്രിയയുടെ അടിസ്ഥാന രൂപം ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.

‘Did Sam live here?’

'സാം ഇവിടെ താമസിച്ചിരുന്നോ?'

You can say ‘Yes, he did.’

'അതെ, അവൻ ചെയ്തു' എന്ന് നിങ്ങൾക്ക് പറയാം.

or ‘No, he didn't.’

അല്ലെങ്കിൽ 'ഇല്ല, അവൻ ചെയ്തില്ല.'

The last sentence is similar.

‘They won the contest last year.’

The verb here is ‘won’, that's not a 'be' verb.

So again, we start the question with ‘did’ .

And then the subject ‘they’, we use the base form of the verb and that's ‘win’.

Now I'll introduce how to create an answer WH questions in the past simple tense.

What comes after that the subject and then the base form of the verb.

Let's take a look at some examples.

Let's take a look at the first usage of the past perfect tense.

This tense can be used to describe an action in the past

that happened before another action in the past.

Here are some examples.

‘I have visited China before I moved there.’

No matter what the subject you follow with ‘had’,

Now what these three sentences have in common is that you'll see, ‘before’.

‘before’ or ‘by the time’.

Earlier I mentioned that the past perfect tense can be used to describe an action

that happened in the past before another action in the past.

We can do the same thing but also emphasize the duration.

How long that first action happened.

We do this by using four and a duration.

Let's take a look.

The second part, ‘it broke’.

The past simple tense verb shows the action in the past

that happened later than the first action.

ഭൂതകാലത്തിലെ പ്രവർത്തനത്തെ കാണിക്കുന്നു .

However, you'll notice that this sentence has a duration, ‘for two months’.

എന്നിരുന്നാലും, ഈ വാക്യത്തിന് 'രണ്ട് മാസത്തേക്ക്' ദൈർഘ്യമുണ്ടെന്ന് നിങ്ങൾ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കും.

‘I had owned my computer for two months before it broke.’

All I'm doing here is showing how long the first action had been true.

Let's take a look at the next example.

Again, we have subject ‘had’, past participle.

And then we have the past simple ‘he got a puppy’.

All we're doing here is emphasizing how long first action had been true.

The first part of the sentence is the past perfect.

Again, we have the past perfect tense here and the past simple tense here.

വീണ്ടും, നമുക്ക് ഇവിടെ പാസ്റ്റ് പെർഫെക്റ്റ് ടെൻസും ഭൂതകാല സിമ്പിൾ ടെൻസും ഇവിടെയുണ്ട്.

This one is the action that happened earlier in the past

And this one over here is the action that happened later in the past.

However, because this is the negative, what I'm going to do is add a 'not' between

the ‘had’ and the past participle of the verb.

Here's the action that happened earlier in the past,

However, again, because it's negative,

Remember, in the negative form, we say ‘had not been getting’

Or the contraction ‘hadn't been getting’.

Now look for the mistake in the next sentence.

ഇനി അടുത്ത വാക്യത്തിലെ തെറ്റ് നോക്കുക.

‘I had been work a lot because I needed the money.’

'എനിക്ക് പണം ആവശ്യമുള്ളതിനാൽ ഞാൻ ഒരുപാട് ജോലി ചെയ്തിരുന്നു.'

What's the mistake?

എന്താണ് തെറ്റ്?

Remember, we need to add ‘-ing’ to the verb.

ഓർക്കുക, നമ്മൾ ക്രിയയിൽ '-ing' ചേർക്കേണ്ടതുണ്ട്.

‘I had been working a lot because I needed the money.’

'പണം ആവശ്യമുള്ളതിനാൽ ഞാൻ ഒരുപാട് ജോലി ചെയ്യുകയായിരുന്നു.'

The last sentence says, ‘He has been smoking because he was stressed.’

അവസാന വാചകം പറയുന്നു, 'അവൻ സമ്മർദ്ദത്തിലായതിനാൽ അവൻ പുകവലിക്കുന്നു.'

Can you find the mistake?

തെറ്റ് കണ്ടുപിടിക്കാമോ?

Remember, we're practicing the past perfect continuous.

ഓർക്കുക, ഞങ്ങൾ ഭൂതകാലം തികഞ്ഞ തുടർച്ചയായി പരിശീലിക്കുകയാണ്.

In this case, we need ‘had’ after the subject, not ‘has’.
