In this video, I will introduce the past tense. We’ll talk about the past simple, past continuous,

In this video, I will introduce the past simple English tense.

This grammar tense can help you explain a past general state, action, or habit.

There's a lot to learn and it's a very important tense, so keep watching.

In this video, I will talk about the 'be' verb

'ಬಿ' ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾತನಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ

The 'be' verb in the past simple tense can be used to describe a past general state.

. ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸರಳ ಉದ್ವಿಗ್ನದಲ್ಲಿ 'ಬಿ' ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವನ್ನು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಸ್ಥಿತಿಯನ್ನು ವಿವರಿಸಲು ಬಳಸಬಹುದು.

We use the 'be' verbs, ‘was’ and ‘were’ in this tense.

ನಾವು ಈ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ 'be' ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದಗಳನ್ನು ಬಳಸುತ್ತೇವೆ, 'was' ಮತ್ತು 'were'.

Take a look at the examples.

ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡೋಣ.

‘I was scared.’

'ನಾನು ಭಯಗೊಂಡಿದ್ದೆ.'

‘James', or he 'was a teacher.’

'ಜೇಮ್ಸ್', ಅಥವಾ ಅವರು 'ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರಾಗಿದ್ದರು.'

‘She was sad.’

'ಅವಳು ದುಃಖಿತಳಾಗಿದ್ದಳು.'

‘My dog was hungry.’

'ನನ್ನ ನಾಯಿಗೆ ಹಸಿವಾಗಿತ್ತು.'

‘My dog’ can be ‘it’.

'ನನ್ನ ನಾಯಿ' 'ಇದು' ಆಗಿರಬಹುದು.

So for ‘I’, ‘he’, ‘she’, ‘it’, we use the past tense 'be' verb, ‘was’.

ಹಾಗಾಗಿ 'ನಾನು', 'ಅವನು', 'ಅವಳು', 'ಇದು', ನಾವು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಕಾಲದ 'ಬಿ' ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವನ್ನು ಬಳಸುತ್ತೇವೆ, 'ವಾಸ್'.

However, for ‘you’, ‘we’ and ‘they’, we use ‘were’.

ಆದಾಗ್ಯೂ, 'ನೀವು', 'ನಾವು' ಮತ್ತು 'ಅವರು' ಎಂಬುದಕ್ಕೆ, ನಾವು 'ವೇರ್' ಅನ್ನು ಬಳಸುತ್ತೇವೆ.

‘You were a good student.’

ನೀವು ಉತ್ತಮ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದಿರಿ.

‘Your parents, or they were at the park.’ and ‘We were at home for two hours.’

'ನಿಮ್ಮ ಪೋಷಕರು, ಅಥವಾ ಅವರು ಪಾರ್ಕ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರು.' ಮತ್ತು 'ನಾವು ಎರಡು ಗಂಟೆಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದೆವು.'

In this last sentence, you see that the duration is emphasized.

ಈ ಕೊನೆಯ ವಾಕ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ, ಅವಧಿಯನ್ನು ಒತ್ತಿಹೇಳಿರುವುದನ್ನು ನೀವು ನೋಡುತ್ತೀರಿ.

Now I will talk about regular verbs in the past simple tense.

ಈಗ ನಾನು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸರಳ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾತನಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ.

Take a look at these examples.

ಈ ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡೋಣ.

‘Liam played a game.’

'ಲಿಯಾಮ್ ಆಟ ಆಡಿದರು.'

Liam is a ‘he’,

ಲಿಯಾಮ್ ಒಂದು 'ಅವನು',

but really it doesn't matter for regular verbs in the past simple tense.

ಆದರೆ ನಿಜವಾಗಿಯೂ ಇದು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸರಳ ಉದ್ವಿಗ್ನ ನಿಯಮಿತ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದಗಳಿಗೆ ಅಪ್ರಸ್ತುತವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

Because no matter what the subject is, all we have to do is add ‘d’ or ‘ed’

ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಯಾವುದೇ ವಿಷಯವಾಗಲಿ, ನಾವು ಮಾಡಬೇಕಾಗಿರುವುದು

to the end of the verb.

ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದದ ಅಂತ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ 'd' ಅಥವಾ 'ed' ಅನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸುವುದು.

Here the verb is ‘play’, so I added ‘-ed’.

ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವು 'ಪ್ಲೇ' ಆಗಿದೆ, ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ನಾನು '-ed' ಅನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸಿದ್ದೇನೆ.

‘Liam played a game.’

'ಲಿಯಾಮ್ ಆಟ ಆಡಿದರು.'

‘The car, or it needed gas.’

'ಕಾರು, ಅಥವಾ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಗ್ಯಾಸ್ ಬೇಕಿತ್ತು.'

The verb here is ‘need’.

ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವು 'ಅಗತ್ಯ'.

For the past simple tense, I added ‘-ed’.

ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸರಳ ಅವಧಿಗೆ, ನಾನು '-ed' ಅನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸಿದ್ದೇನೆ.

‘We watched a movie.’

'ನಾವು ಸಿನಿಮಾ ನೋಡಿದೆವು.'

Again, an ‘ed’ at the of ‘watch’.

ಮತ್ತೆ, 'ವಾಚ್' ನಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು 'ed'.

‘You exercised for an hour.’

'ನೀವು ಒಂದು ಗಂಟೆ ವ್ಯಾಯಾಮ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದೀರಿ.'

In this case, the verb is ‘exercise’.

ಈ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ, ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವು 'ವ್ಯಾಯಾಮ' ಆಗಿದೆ.

I only need to add a ‘d’ to make it the past tense.

ನಾನು ಅದನ್ನು ಭೂತಕಾಲವನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮಾಡಲು 'd' ಅನ್ನು ಮಾತ್ರ ಸೇರಿಸಬೇಕಾಗಿದೆ.

And finally, ‘They usually worked after school.’

ಮತ್ತು ಅಂತಿಮವಾಗಿ, 'ಅವರು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಶಾಲೆಯ ನಂತರ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ.'

The verb is ‘work’.

ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವು 'ಕೆಲಸ'.

And I added an ‘ed’ to make it in the past tense.

ಮತ್ತು ನಾನು ಅದನ್ನು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಡಲು 'ed' ಅನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸಿದೆ.

The word ‘usually’ shows that this was a habit.

'ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ' ಎಂಬ ಪದವು ಇದು ಅಭ್ಯಾಸವಾಗಿತ್ತು ಎಂದು ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

Remember, the past simple tense can be used to show past habits.

ನೆನಪಿಡಿ, ಹಿಂದಿನ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸಗಳನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸಲು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸರಳ ಸಮಯವನ್ನು ಬಳಸಬಹುದು.

Let's move on.

ಮುಂದೆ ಸಾಗೋಣ.

Now, I'll talk about irregular verbs in the past simple tense.

ಈಗ, ನಾನು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸರಳ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಅನಿಯಮಿತ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾತನಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ.

Remember, for regular verbs, we only add ‘d’ or ‘ed’ to make a verb into the past tense.

ನೆನಪಿಡಿ, ನಿಯಮಿತ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದಗಳಿಗೆ, ನಾವು ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವನ್ನು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಉದ್ವಿಗ್ನಕ್ಕೆ ಮಾಡಲು 'd' ಅಥವಾ 'ed' ಅನ್ನು ಮಾತ್ರ ಸೇರಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ.

However, for irregular verbs, we have to change the verb in a different way.

ಆದಾಗ್ಯೂ, ಅನಿಯಮಿತ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದಗಳಿಗೆ, ನಾವು ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವನ್ನು ಬೇರೆ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಬೇಕಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

Let's take a look at some examples.

ಕೆಲವು ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡೋಣ.

‘I ate with my friend.’

'ನಾನು ನನ್ನ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಊಟ ಮಾಡಿದೆ.'

The verb here is ‘ate’.

ಇಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವು 'ತಿನ್ನಿದೆ'.

‘ate’ is the past simple tense of ‘eat’.

'ತಿನ್ನ' ಎಂಬುದು 'ತಿನ್ನ'ದ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸರಳ ಕಾಲ.

The next example says, ‘Nara wrote a story.’

ಮುಂದಿನ ಉದಾಹರಣೆ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ, 'ನಾರ ಕಥೆ ಬರೆದರು'.

The verb is ‘write’.

ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವು 'ಬರೆಯಿರಿ'.

And because it's irregular to change it into the past tense, we change the verb to ‘wrote’.

ಮತ್ತು ಅದನ್ನು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಉದ್ವಿಗ್ನತೆಗೆ ಬದಲಾಯಿಸುವುದು ಅನಿಯಮಿತವಾದ ಕಾರಣ, ನಾವು ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವನ್ನು 'ಬರೆದು' ಎಂದು ಬದಲಾಯಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ.

‘You often came home late.’

ನೀವು ಆಗಾಗ ಮನೆಗೆ ತಡವಾಗಿ ಬರುತ್ತಿದ್ದಿರಿ.

The verb here is ‘come’ and it's been changed to ‘came’.

ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವು 'ಬನ್ನಿ' ಮತ್ತು ಅದನ್ನು 'ಬಂದ' ಎಂದು ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ.

You'll notice that we had the word ‘often’ to show a habit.

ಅಭ್ಯಾಸವನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸಲು ನಾವು 'ಆಗಾಗ್ಗೆ' ಎಂಬ ಪದವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೇವೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ನೀವು ಗಮನಿಸಬಹುದು.

‘We bought a camera.’

'ನಾವು ಕ್ಯಾಮೆರಾ ಖರೀದಿಸಿದ್ದೇವೆ.'

The verb here is ‘buy’ and it's been changed to ‘bought’ to show the past simple tense.

ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವು 'ಖರೀದಿ' ಆಗಿದೆ ಮತ್ತು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸರಳ ಸಮಯವನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸಲು ಅದನ್ನು 'ಖರೀದಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ' ಎಂದು ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ.

And finally, ‘My parents sent me money for a year.’

ಮತ್ತು ಅಂತಿಮವಾಗಿ, 'ನನ್ನ ಪೋಷಕರು ನನಗೆ ಒಂದು ವರ್ಷಕ್ಕೆ ಹಣವನ್ನು ಕಳುಹಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.'

Here the verb ‘sent’ is the past tense of ‘send’.

ಇಲ್ಲಿ 'ಕಳುಹಿಸಿದ' ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವು 'ಕಳುಹಿಸು' ಎಂಬ ಪದದ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಕಾಲವಾಗಿದೆ.

Here we also see ‘for a year’, this shows duration.

ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನಾವು 'ಒಂದು ವರ್ಷದವರೆಗೆ' ಅನ್ನು ಸಹ ನೋಡುತ್ತೇವೆ, ಇದು ಅವಧಿಯನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

Let's move on.

ಮುಂದೆ ಸಾಗೋಣ.

Now I will talk about the negative form for the 'be' verb in the past simple tense.

ಈಗ ನಾನು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸರಳ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ 'ಬಿ' ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದದ ಋಣಾತ್ಮಕ ರೂಪದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾತನಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ.

Here are some examples.

ಕೆಲವು ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗಳು ಇಲ್ಲಿವೆ.

The first one says, ‘I was not hungry.’

ಮೊದಲನೆಯವನು ‘ನನಗೆ ಹಸಿವಾಗಲಿಲ್ಲ’ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾನೆ.

For the past simple tense, the negative 'be' verb

ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸರಳ ಅವಧಿಗೆ, ಋಣಾತ್ಮಕ 'ಬಿ' ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದ

I f the subject is ‘I’, ‘he’, ‘she’ or ‘it’, we say ‘was not’.

I f ವಿಷಯವು 'ನಾನು', 'ಅವನು', 'ಅವಳು' ಅಥವಾ 'ಇದು', ನಾವು 'ಇಲ್ಲ' ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತೇವೆ.

For example, ‘I was not’ or ‘she was not’ or the contraction ‘wasn't’.

ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ, 'ನಾನು ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ' ಅಥವಾ 'ಅವಳು ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ' ಅಥವಾ 'ಇಲ್ಲ' ಎಂಬ ಸಂಕೋಚನ.

‘I wasn't’.

'ನಾನು ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ'.

‘She wasn't’.

'ಅವಳು ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ'.

So let's look again, ‘I was not hungry.’

ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಮತ್ತೊಮ್ಮೆ ನೋಡೋಣ, ‘ನನಗೆ ಹಸಿವಾಗಲಿಲ್ಲ.

‘She wasn't home today.’

'ಅವಳು ಇಂದು ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ.

Now, if the subject is ‘you’, ‘we’ or ‘they’,

ಈಗ, ವಿಷಯವು 'ನೀವು', 'ನಾವು' ಅಥವಾ 'ಅವರು' ಆಗಿದ್ದರೆ,

We say ‘were not’ or the contraction ‘weren't’.

ನಾವು 'ಇಲ್ಲ' ಅಥವಾ 'ಇಲ್ಲ' ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತೇವೆ.

‘The children, or they were not quiet.’

'ಮಕ್ಕಳು, ಅಥವಾ ಅವರು ಸುಮ್ಮನಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ.'

‘The children were not quiet.’

'ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಸುಮ್ಮನಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ.'

And then, ‘The dog', or it was not, or 'wasn't playful.’

ತದನಂತರ, 'ನಾಯಿ', ಅಥವಾ ಅದು ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ, ಅಥವಾ 'ಆಟವಾಡಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ.'

Let's move on.

Now, let's talk about how to form the negative in the past simple tense for non-'be' verbs,

ಈಗ, 'be' ಅಲ್ಲದ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದಗಳಿಗೆ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸರಳ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಋಣಾತ್ಮಕವನ್ನು ಹೇಗೆ ರಚಿಸುವುದು ಎಂಬುದರ ಕುರಿತು ಮಾತನಾಡೋಣ,

regular or irregular.

ನಿಯಮಿತ ಅಥವಾ ಅನಿಯಮಿತ.

Here are some examples.

ಕೆಲವು ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗಳು ಇಲ್ಲಿವೆ.

‘I did not like him.’

'ನಾನು ಅವನನ್ನು ಇಷ್ಟಪಡಲಿಲ್ಲ.

What we do for non-'be' verbs is simply put ‘did not’ after the subject.

ನಾನ್-'ಬಿ' ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದಗಳಿಗೆ ನಾವು ಏನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತೇವೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ವಿಷಯದ ನಂತರ 'ಮಾಡಲಿಲ್ಲ' ಎಂದು ಹಾಕಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

And you'll notice that for the verb, we don't make any changes.

ಮತ್ತು ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ, ನಾವು ಯಾವುದೇ ಬದಲಾವಣೆಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ನೀವು ಗಮನಿಸಬಹುದು.

We keep the base verb.

ನಾವು ಮೂಲ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವನ್ನು ಇಡುತ್ತೇವೆ.

‘He didn't catch the ball.’

ಅವರು ಚೆಂಡನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿಯಲಿಲ್ಲ.

Again, it's ‘he did not’, but here we used a contraction,

ಮತ್ತೆ, ಅದು 'ಅವನು ಮಾಡಲಿಲ್ಲ', ಆದರೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನಾವು

‘He didn't catch the ball.’

'ಅವನು ಚೆಂಡನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿಯಲಿಲ್ಲ' ಎಂಬ ಸಂಕೋಚನವನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

‘They didn't dance.’

ಅವರು ನೃತ್ಯ ಮಾಡಲಿಲ್ಲ.

Again, here's the contraction for ‘did not’.

ಮತ್ತೆ, 'ಮಾಡಲಿಲ್ಲ' ಎಂಬುದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಂಕೋಚನ ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ.

And you'll notice that for the verb, we didn't change it at all.

ಮತ್ತು ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ, ನಾವು ಅದನ್ನು ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಲಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ನೀವು ಗಮನಿಸಬಹುದು.

Here's an irregular verb, and here's a regular verb, we keep them in the base form.

ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಅನಿಯಮಿತ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವಿದೆ, ಮತ್ತು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವಿದೆ, ನಾವು ಅವುಗಳನ್ನು ಮೂಲ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಇರಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ.

And finally, ‘We didn't think about that.’

Again, we simply say ‘did not’ or ‘didn't’.

Now I will introduce two ways to form questions for the past simple tense.

ಈಗ ನಾನು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸರಳ ಉದ್ವಿಗ್ನತೆಗೆ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳನ್ನು ರೂಪಿಸಲು ಎರಡು ಮಾರ್ಗಗಳನ್ನು ಪರಿಚಯಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ.

Take a look at the first example.

ಮೊದಲ ಉದಾಹರಣೆಯನ್ನು ನೋಡೋಣ.

‘He was angry.’

'ಅವರು ಕೋಪಗೊಂಡಿದ್ದರು.'

In this first sentence, we see the 'be' verb ‘was’.

ಈ ಮೊದಲ ವಾಕ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ, ನಾವು 'be' ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದ 'was' ಅನ್ನು ನೋಡುತ್ತೇವೆ.

It's quite easy.

ಇದು ತುಂಬಾ ಸುಲಭ.

All you have to do to turn this into a question is switch the order the first two words.

The next sentence also has a 'be' verb.

‘They were comfortable.’

So again, switch the first two words.

‘Were they comfortable?’

The answers can be, ‘Yes, they were.’

or ‘No, they weren't.’

However, look at the third sentence.

There is no 'be' verb in this sentence.

Instead, we see the action verb ‘lived’.

ಬದಲಿಗೆ, ನಾವು ಕ್ರಿಯಾ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವನ್ನು ನೋಡುತ್ತೇವೆ 'ಜೀವಂತ'.

So what we do is no matter what the subject,

ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ನಾವು ಮಾಡುವುದೇನು ವಿಷಯವೇ ಆಗಿರಲಿ,

we start the question with ‘did’.

‘Did Sam live here?’

You'll notice that the verb no longer is in the past tense.

ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವು ಇನ್ನು ಮುಂದೆ ಭೂತಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ನೀವು ಗಮನಿಸಬಹುದು.

We use the base form of the verb.

‘Did Sam live here?’

You can say ‘Yes, he did.’

The verb here is ‘won’, that's not a 'be' verb.

So again, we start the question with ‘did’ .

We have some WH words here.

'ಏನು' 'ಯಾವಾಗ'

‘Where’ and ‘Why’

You'll notice that after each WH word comes the word ‘did’.

ಪ್ರತಿ WH ಪದದ ನಂತರ 'ಮಾಡಿದೆ' ಎಂಬ ಪದವು ಬರುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ನೀವು ಗಮನಿಸಬಹುದು.

‘What did’ ‘When did’

'ಏನು ಮಾಡಿದರು' 'ಯಾವಾಗ ಮಾಡಿದರು'

‘Where did’ and ‘Why did’.

'ಎಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಡಿದರು' ಮತ್ತು 'ಏಕೆ ಮಾಡಿದರು'.

What comes after that the subject and then the base form of the verb.

So, let's take a look.

I can answer by saying something like, ‘I watched a movie.’

Or ‘I read a book.’

ಅಥವಾ 'ನಾನು ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದಿದ್ದೇನೆ.'

You'll notice that the answer is in the past simple tense.

ಉತ್ತರವು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸರಳ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿದೆ ಎಂದು ನೀವು ಗಮನಿಸಬಹುದು.

‘When did you get home last night?’

'ನಿನ್ನೆ ರಾತ್ರಿ ಮನೆಗೆ ಯಾವಾಗ ಬಂದೆ?'

‘I got home at 10 p.m.’

'ನಾನು ರಾತ್ರಿ 10 ಗಂಟೆಗೆ ಮನೆಗೆ ಬಂದೆ'

‘Where did they eat lunch?’

'ಅವರು ಎಲ್ಲಿ ಊಟ ಮಾಡಿದರು?'

‘They ate lunch at home.’

'ಅವರು ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಊಟ ಮಾಡಿದರು.'

Again, ‘ate’ is the past tense of ‘eat’.

ಮತ್ತೆ, 'ತಿನ್ನ' ಎಂಬುದು 'ತಿನ್ನ'ದ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಕಾಲ.

Answer in the past simple tense.

ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸರಳ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಉತ್ತರಿಸಿ.

And finally, ‘Why did the company hire him?’

ಮತ್ತು ಅಂತಿಮವಾಗಿ, 'ಕಂಪನಿ ಅವನನ್ನು ಏಕೆ ನೇಮಿಸಿತು?'

‘The company hired him because he's a hard worker.’

Let's take a look at the first sentence.

The correct answer is ‘was’.

ಸರಿಯಾದ ಉತ್ತರ 'ಆಗಿತ್ತು'.

‘He was at work earlier.’

'ಅವರು ಮೊನ್ನೆ ಕೆಲಸದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರು.'

The next sentence says,

ಮುಂದಿನ ವಾಕ್ಯವು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ,

‘We _____ very happy yesterday.’

'ನಾವು _____ ನಿನ್ನೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಸಂತೋಷವಾಗಿದ್ದೇವೆ.'

If the subject is ‘we’, remember the be verb is ‘were’.

ವಿಷಯವು 'ನಾವು' ಆಗಿದ್ದರೆ, ಬಿ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವು 'were' ಎಂದು ನೆನಪಿಡಿ.

‘We were very happy yesterday.’

'ನಾವು ನಿನ್ನೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಸಂತೋಷವಾಗಿದ್ದೇವೆ.'

Next, ‘My parents or they __ worried about me.’

ಮುಂದೆ, 'ನನ್ನ ಹೆತ್ತವರು ಅಥವಾ ಅವರು __ ನನ್ನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಚಿಂತಿತರಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ.'

If it's 'they', remember we have to say ‘were’.

ಅದು 'ಅವರು' ಆಗಿದ್ದರೆ, ನಾವು 'ಇರು' ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ನೆನಪಿಡಿ.

‘My parents were worried about me.’

'ನನ್ನ ಹೆತ್ತವರು ನನ್ನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಚಿಂತಿತರಾಗಿದ್ದರು.'

If I want to use the negative, I can also say ‘My parents weren't worried about me.’

ನಾನು ನಕಾರಾತ್ಮಕತೆಯನ್ನು ಬಳಸಲು ಬಯಸಿದರೆ, 'ನನ್ನ ಹೆತ್ತವರು ನನ್ನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಚಿಂತಿಸಲಿಲ್ಲ' ಎಂದೂ ಹೇಳಬಹುದು.

And that's possible.

Can you figure out what's wrong?

ಏನು ತಪ್ಪಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂದು ನೀವು ಲೆಕ್ಕಾಚಾರ ಮಾಡಬಹುದೇ?

The subject here is ‘we’, so we don't say ‘was not’.

ಇಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಷಯ 'ನಾವು', ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ನಾವು 'ಇಲ್ಲ' ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

We need to say ‘were not’ or the contraction ‘weren't’.

ನಾವು 'ಇಲ್ಲ' ಅಥವಾ 'ಇಲ್ಲ' ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಬೇಕು.

‘We weren't good students,’ is the correct answer.

'ನಾವು ಉತ್ತಮ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಾಗಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ' ಎಂಬುದು ಸರಿಯಾದ ಉತ್ತರ.

The next one says, ‘Were she a teacher?’

ಮುಂದಿನವರು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ, 'ಅವಳು ಶಿಕ್ಷಕಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದಳೇ?'

Now, this is a question so the be verb comes at the beginning.

ಈಗ, ಇದು ಒಂದು ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಬಿ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ.

That's correct, but the subject here is ‘she’.

Therefore, we need to start with ‘was’.

Now, let's practice regular verbs in the past simple tense.

Take a look at the first sentence.

ಮೊದಲ ವಾಕ್ಯವನ್ನು ನೋಡೋಣ.

‘He ____ at home.’

'ಅವನು ____ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ.'

The verb is ‘study’.

ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವು 'ಅಧ್ಯಯನ'.

Remember, when changing a regular verb into

ನೆನಪಿಡಿ, ನಿಯಮಿತ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವನ್ನು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಕಾಲಕ್ಕೆ ಬದಲಾಯಿಸುವಾಗ

the past tense, we add ‘d’ or ‘ed’ to the end of the

, ನಾವು ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದದ ಅಂತ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ 'd' ಅಥವಾ 'ed' ಅನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ

verb.

However, there's a separate rule for words that end in ‘y’.

ಆದಾಗ್ಯೂ, 'y' ನಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊನೆಗೊಳ್ಳುವ ಪದಗಳಿಗೆ ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕ ನಿಯಮವಿದೆ.

Such as, ‘study’.

ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ, 'ಅಧ್ಯಯನ'.

We drop the ‘y’ and we add ‘ied’.

ನಾವು 'y' ಅನ್ನು ಬಿಡುತ್ತೇವೆ ಮತ್ತು ನಾವು 'ied' ಅನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ.

So the correct answer is,

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಸರಿಯಾದ ಉತ್ತರವೆಂದರೆ,

‘He studied at home.’

'ಅವನು ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಓದಿದನು'.

The next sentence says, ‘We __ pencils.’

ಮುಂದಿನ ವಾಕ್ಯವು, 'ನಾವು __ ಪೆನ್ಸಿಲ್‌ಗಳು' ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.

We want to use negative because it says ‘not use’.

ನಾವು ನಕಾರಾತ್ಮಕವಾಗಿ ಬಳಸಲು ಬಯಸುತ್ತೇವೆ ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಅದು 'ಬಳಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ' ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.

Remember for the negative, we always use ‘did not’, no matter what the subject.

ನಕಾರಾತ್ಮಕತೆಗಾಗಿ ನೆನಪಿಡಿ, ನಾವು ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ 'ಮಾಡಲಿಲ್ಲ' ಅನ್ನು ಬಳಸುತ್ತೇವೆ, ಯಾವುದೇ ವಿಷಯವಾಗಿರಲಿ.

You can also use the contraction ‘didn't’.

Now, what do we do to the verb?

ಈಗ, ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದಕ್ಕೆ ನಾವು ಏನು ಮಾಡಬೇಕು?

We keep it as ‘is’.

ನಾವು ಅದನ್ನು 'ಇದೆ' ಎಂದು ಇಡುತ್ತೇವೆ.

We do not change it.

ನಾವು ಅದನ್ನು ಬದಲಾಯಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

‘We didn't’ or ‘We did not’ use pencils.

'ನಾವು ಮಾಡಲಿಲ್ಲ' ಅಥವಾ 'ನಾವು ಮಾಡಲಿಲ್ಲ' ಪೆನ್ಸಿಲ್‌ಗಳನ್ನು ಬಳಸುತ್ತೇವೆ.

The next sentence says, ‘His friends or they walk to the gym.’

ಮುಂದಿನ ವಾಕ್ಯವು, 'ಅವನ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತರು ಅಥವಾ ಅವರು ಜಿಮ್‌ಗೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾರೆ' ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.

What's the past tense of ‘walk’?

'ನಡೆ'ಯ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಕಾಲ ಯಾವುದು?

We simply have to add ‘ed’ because it's a regular verb.

ನಾವು ಸರಳವಾಗಿ 'ed' ಅನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸಬೇಕಾಗಿದೆ ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಇದು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವಾಗಿದೆ.

‘His friends walked to the gym.’

'ಅವನ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತರು ಜಿಮ್‌ಗೆ ನಡೆದರು.'

Now, find a mistake in the next sentence.

ಈಗ, ಮುಂದಿನ ವಾಕ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ತಪ್ಪನ್ನು ಕಂಡುಹಿಡಿಯಿರಿ.

‘She didn't likes math.’

‘didn't’ is correct.

'ಮಾಡಲಿಲ್ಲ' ಎಂಬುದು ಸರಿಯಾಗಿದೆ.

However, remember we keep the verb as ‘is’ in the base form.

ಆದಾಗ್ಯೂ, ನಾವು ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವನ್ನು ಮೂಲ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ 'ಇದ್ದು' ಎಂದು ಇರಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ನೆನಪಿಡಿ.

So we don't say ‘likes’.

The next sentence says, ‘Did it rained this morning?’

ಮುಂದಿನ ವಾಕ್ಯವು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ, 'ಇವತ್ತು ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆ ಮಳೆಯಾಗಿದೆಯೇ?'

Now this is a question.

ಈಗ ಇದು ಒಂದು ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ.

In a question, it’s right to start the sentence with ‘Did’.

ಒಂದು ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ, ವಾಕ್ಯವನ್ನು 'ಮಾಡಿದೆ' ಎಂದು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸುವುದು ಸರಿಯಾಗಿದೆ.

‘Did it rained?’

'ಮಳೆ ಬಂದಿದೆಯಾ?'

Do you notice the mistake?

ನೀವು ತಪ್ಪನ್ನು ಗಮನಿಸುತ್ತೀರಾ?

Remember, we do not use the past tense form in the question.

ನೆನಪಿಡಿ, ನಾವು ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಉದ್ವಿಗ್ನ ರೂಪವನ್ನು ಬಳಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

We use the base form of the verb.

ನಾವು ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದದ ಮೂಲ ರೂಪವನ್ನು ಬಳಸುತ್ತೇವೆ.

‘Did it rain this morning?’

'ಇವತ್ತು ಮುಂಜಾನೆ ಮಳೆ ಬಂದಿತೇ?'

And finally, ‘They not play the piano.’

ಮತ್ತು ಅಂತಿಮವಾಗಿ, 'ಅವರು ಪಿಯಾನೋ ನುಡಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.'

The verb is an action verb.

ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವು ಕ್ರಿಯಾ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವಾಗಿದೆ.

So we need a ‘did’ in front of ‘not’.

Now, I'll talk about irregular verbs in the past simple tense.

ಈಗ, ನಾನು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸರಳ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಅನಿಯಮಿತ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾತನಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ.

Take a look at the first sentence.

ಮೊದಲ ವಾಕ್ಯವನ್ನು ನೋಡೋಣ.

‘He __ to school.’

'ಅವನು __ ಶಾಲೆಗೆ.'

And the verb is ‘run’.

ಮತ್ತು ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವು 'ರನ್' ಆಗಿದೆ.

‘run’ is an irregular verb, so the past tense form is ‘ran’.

'ರನ್' ಎಂಬುದು ಅನಿಯಮಿತ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವಾಗಿದೆ, ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಉದ್ವಿಗ್ನ ರೂಪವು 'ರನ್' ಆಗಿದೆ.

‘He ran to school.’

The next sentence says, ‘We __ flowers.’

ಮುಂದಿನ ವಾಕ್ಯವು, 'ನಾವು __ ಹೂಗಳು' ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.

We want to use the negative because here it says ‘not grow’.

ನಾವು ನಕಾರಾತ್ಮಕತೆಯನ್ನು ಬಳಸಲು ಬಯಸುತ್ತೇವೆ ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಅದು 'ಬೆಳೆಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ' ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.

Remember, no matter what the subject in the negative form,

ನೆನಪಿಡಿ, ಯಾವುದೇ ವಿಷಯವು ಋಣಾತ್ಮಕ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿರಲಿ,

we say ‘did not’

ನಾವು 'ಮಾಡಲಿಲ್ಲ'

or ‘didn't’.

Then we keep the verb in its base form.

‘He didn't sold newspapers.’

Remember, in the negative, ‘didn't’ is correct for whatever subject there is.

So the correct answer is, ‘He didn't sell newspapers.’

The next sentence says, ‘Did she sing a song?’

You'll notice it's a similar problem here.

ಇಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಇದೇ ರೀತಿಯ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆ ಇರುವುದನ್ನು ನೀವು ಗಮನಿಸಬಹುದು.

‘sang’ is the irregular past tense form of ‘sing’.

'sang' ಎಂಬುದು 'sing' ನ ಅನಿಯಮಿತ ಭೂತಕಾಲದ ರೂಪವಾಗಿದೆ.

But in a question, if it starts with ‘did’,

ಆದರೆ ಒಂದು ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ, ಅದು 'ಮಾಡಿದೆ' ಎಂದು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭವಾದರೆ,

we use the base form.

I will introduce the past continuous tense.

This tense can be used to describe an action that was ongoing in the past.

ಹಿಂದೆ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯನ್ನು ವಿವರಿಸಲು ಈ ಕಾಲವನ್ನು ಬಳಸಬಹುದು.

It can also be used to describe two actions happening at the same time in the past.

ಹಿಂದೆ ಒಂದೇ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಭವಿಸುವ ಎರಡು ಕ್ರಿಯೆಗಳನ್ನು ವಿವರಿಸಲು ಸಹ ಇದನ್ನು ಬಳಸಬಹುದು.

There's a lot to learn so let's get started.

ಕಲಿಯಲು ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ಇದೆ ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸೋಣ.

Let's take a look at the first usage of the past continuous tense.

ಹಿಂದಿನ ನಿರಂತರ ಕಾಲದ ಮೊದಲ ಬಳಕೆಯನ್ನು ನೋಡೋಣ.

This tense can be used to describe an action that was ongoing in the past.

ಹಿಂದೆ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯನ್ನು ವಿವರಿಸಲು ಈ ಕಾಲವನ್ನು ಬಳಸಬಹುದು.

Let's take a look at these examples.

ಈ ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡೋಣ.

‘I was walking in the park in the evening.’

'ನಾನು ಸಂಜೆ ಪಾರ್ಕ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಕಿಂಗ್ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೆ.'

So first we start with the subject, ‘I’.

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಮೊದಲು ನಾವು 'ನಾನು' ಎಂಬ ವಿಷಯದಿಂದ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ.

For I, he, she, and it, we follow with ‘was’.

ನಾನು, ಅವನು, ಅವಳು ಮತ್ತು ಅದಕ್ಕೆ, ನಾವು 'ಆಗಿತ್ತು' ಅನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ.

‘I was’

And then we add an ‘ING’ to the end of the verb.

You can see that this was an ongoing action and it happened in the past.

ಇದು ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯಾಗಿದೆ ಮತ್ತು ಇದು ಹಿಂದೆ ಸಂಭವಿಸಿದೆ ಎಂದು ನೀವು ನೋಡಬಹುದು.

Let's look at the next example.

‘She was living here last year.’

Here we have another expression that shows that this action was happening in the past.

ಈ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯು ಹಿಂದೆ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿತ್ತು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸುವ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಅಭಿವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನಾವು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

‘The dog,’ or ‘it’, ‘was eating dinner five minutes ago.’

'ನಾಯಿ,' ಅಥವಾ 'ಇದು', 'ಐದು ನಿಮಿಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ಊಟ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿತ್ತು.'

The subject here is ‘the dog’ which can be replaced by the pronoun ‘it’.

And finally, ‘Andy and Jim,’ we can replace this with ‘they’.

The past continuous tense is also used to describe an ongoing

action in the past that was interrupted by another action.

ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯನ್ನು ವಿವರಿಸಲು ಬಳಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ .

This interrupting action is used in the past simple tense with the word ‘when’.

ಈ ಅಡ್ಡಿಪಡಿಸುವ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯನ್ನು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸರಳ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ 'ಯಾವಾಗ' ಎಂಬ ಪದದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಬಳಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

Let's take a look at this example.

ಈ ಉದಾಹರಣೆಯನ್ನು ನೋಡೋಣ.

‘I was playing cards when you called.’

'ನೀವು ಕರೆ ಮಾಡಿದಾಗ ನಾನು ಇಸ್ಪೀಟು ಆಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೆ.'

Again we start with the subject ‘was’ or ‘were’,

ಮತ್ತೆ ನಾವು 'was' ಅಥವಾ 'were' ಎಂಬ ವಿಷಯದಿಂದ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ,

and then ‘verb-ing’,

ತದನಂತರ 'verb-ing',

so this is the action that was ongoing in the past,

You'll notice I use the word ‘when’ to show the interrupting action’

And I used it in the past simple tense, ‘called’.

Let's take a look at the next sentence.

‘The cat' or 'it' was eating when Eric came home.’

ಎರಿಕ್ ಮನೆಗೆ ಬಂದಾಗ 'ಬೆಕ್ಕು' ಅಥವಾ 'ಇದು' ತಿನ್ನುತ್ತಿತ್ತು.'

Again the action in progress is ‘the cat was eating’.

ಮತ್ತೆ ಕ್ರಮ ಪ್ರಗತಿಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದು 'ಬೆಕ್ಕು ತಿನ್ನುತ್ತಿತ್ತು'.

And ‘Eric came home’, you'll notice the past simple tense.

ಮತ್ತು 'ಎರಿಕ್ ಮನೆಗೆ ಬಂದರು', ನೀವು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸರಳ ಉದ್ವಿಗ್ನತೆಯನ್ನು ಗಮನಿಸಬಹುದು.

This is the interrupting action used with the word ‘when’.

Again we have the ongoing action in the past.

ಮತ್ತೆ ನಾವು ಹಿಂದೆ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ಕ್ರಮವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

The subject here is ‘we’.

ಇಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಷಯ 'ನಾವು'.

And so we used ‘were’ and then ‘verb-ing’.

Another usage for the past continuous tense is to talk about two actions that were

ಹಿಂದಿನ ನಿರಂತರ ಉದ್ವಿಗ್ನತೆಯ ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಬಳಕೆಯು

happening at the same time in the past.

ಹಿಂದೆ ಒಂದೇ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಭವಿಸಿದ ಎರಡು ಕ್ರಿಯೆಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾತನಾಡುವುದು.

We use the past continuous tense for both actions with the word ‘while’.

ನಾವು 'while' ಪದದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಎರಡೂ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಹಿಂದಿನ ನಿರಂತರ ಸಮಯವನ್ನು ಬಳಸುತ್ತೇವೆ.

Let's take a look at some examples.

ಕೆಲವು ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡೋಣ.

The first sentence says, ‘While I was playing soccer, she was watching

ಮೊದಲ ವಾಕ್ಯವು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ, 'ನಾನು ಸಾಕರ್ ಆಡುತ್ತಿರುವಾಗ, ಅವಳು

me.’

ನನ್ನನ್ನು ನೋಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಳು.'

You'll notice that both actions are in the past continuous tense.

ಎರಡೂ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಗಳು ಹಿಂದಿನ ನಿರಂತರ ಉದ್ವಿಗ್ನತೆಯನ್ನು ನೀವು ಗಮನಿಸಬಹುದು.

‘I was playing soccer’ and ‘She was watching me’.

'ನಾನು ಸಾಕರ್ ಆಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೆ' ಮತ್ತು 'ಅವಳು ನನ್ನನ್ನು ನೋಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಳು'.

The word ‘while’ at the beginning shows that these actions were happening at the sametime.

ಆರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ 'while' ಎಂಬ ಪದವು ಈ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಗಳು ಒಂದೇ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿವೆ ಎಂದು ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

‘While you were reading, I was preparing dinner.’

'ನೀವು ಓದುತ್ತಿರುವಾಗ, ನಾನು ರಾತ್ರಿಯ ಊಟವನ್ನು ತಯಾರಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದೆ.'

Again both actions are expressed in the past continuous tense.

ಮತ್ತೆ ಎರಡೂ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಗಳು ಹಿಂದಿನ ನಿರಂತರ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ವ್ಯಕ್ತವಾಗುತ್ತವೆ.

The word ‘while’ shows that they were happening at the same time.

'ಸಮಯ' ಎಂಬ ಪದವು ಅವು ಒಂದೇ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದವು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

‘While Her husband’ or ‘he’, ‘was driving

Both actions are in the past continuous tense.

And finally,

ಮತ್ತು ಅಂತಿಮವಾಗಿ,

‘While we were eating, the music was playing.’

Both actions were happening at the same time.

Now, you'll notice that in my examples the word ‘while’ comes at the beginning,

‘I was playing soccer while she was watching me.’

ಅವಳು ನನ್ನನ್ನು ನೋಡುತ್ತಿರುವಾಗ ನಾನು ಸಾಕರ್ ಆಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೆ.

I can put the ‘while’ between the two actions.

ನಾನು ಎರಡು ಕ್ರಿಯೆಗಳ ನಡುವೆ 'ಸಮಯ'ವನ್ನು ಹಾಕಬಹುದು.

Or I can also change the sentence around and say,

ಅಥವಾ ನಾನು ವಾಕ್ಯವನ್ನು ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಬಹುದು ಮತ್ತು

‘While she was watching me, I was playing soccer.’

'ಅವಳು ನನ್ನನ್ನು ನೋಡುತ್ತಿರುವಾಗ, ನಾನು ಸಾಕರ್ ಆಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೆ' ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಬಹುದು.

So it doesn't matter which action comes first with the ‘while’ if you put it in the

Now let's talk about the negative form of the past continuous tense.

ಈಗ ಹಿಂದಿನ ನಿರಂತರ ಉದ್ವಿಗ್ನತೆಯ ಋಣಾತ್ಮಕ ರೂಪದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾತನಾಡೋಣ.

Here are some examples.

ಕೆಲವು ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗಳು ಇಲ್ಲಿವೆ.

‘She was not reading last night.’

'ಅವಳು ನಿನ್ನೆ ರಾತ್ರಿ ಓದುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ.'

The subject is ‘she’ and so we use ‘was’.

ವಿಷಯವು 'ಅವಳು' ಮತ್ತು ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ನಾವು 'was' ಅನ್ನು ಬಳಸುತ್ತೇವೆ.

However, before the ‘verb-ing’, we add ‘not’.

ಆದಾಗ್ಯೂ, 'ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದ-ಇಂಗ್' ಮೊದಲು, ನಾವು 'ನಾಟ್' ಅನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ.

‘She was not reading last night.’

I can use a contraction and say,

'ಈ ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆ ನಾವು ಸಂಗೀತವನ್ನು ಕೇಳುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ.'

In this case, the subject is ‘we’ and so we use ‘were’.

ಈ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ, ವಿಷಯವು 'ನಾವು' ಮತ್ತು ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ನಾವು 'Wer' ಅನ್ನು ಬಳಸುತ್ತೇವೆ.

Again I can use a contraction and say,

‘We weren't listening to music this morning.’

'ನಾವು ಈ ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆ ಸಂಗೀತವನ್ನು ಕೇಳುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ' ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಬಹುದು.

And the next one says, ‘He wasn't watching TV when his dad came

ಮತ್ತು ಮುಂದಿನವನು, 'ಅವನ ತಂದೆ

home.’

ಮನೆಗೆ ಬಂದಾಗ ಅವನು ಟಿವಿ ನೋಡುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ' ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ.

In this example, the contraction is already there for you,

ಈ ಉದಾಹರಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ, 'ಅವನು ಟಿವಿ ನೋಡುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ' ಎಂಬ

‘He wasn't watching TV’.

ಸಂಕೋಚನವು ಈಗಾಗಲೇ ನಿಮಗೆ ಇದೆ

You'll notice the word ‘when’.

. 'ಯಾವಾಗ' ಎಂಬ ಪದವನ್ನು ನೀವು ಗಮನಿಸಬಹುದು.

Remember ‘when’ + ‘a past simple tense verb’ shows an interrupting action,

'ಯಾವಾಗ' + 'ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸರಳ ಉದ್ವಿಗ್ನ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದ' ಅಡ್ಡಿಪಡಿಸುವ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ,

so, ‘When his dad came home he wasn't watching TV.’

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ, 'ಅವನ ತಂದೆ ಮನೆಗೆ ಬಂದಾಗ ಅವರು ಟಿವಿ ನೋಡುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ.'

He was doing something else.

ಅವನು ಬೇರೇನೋ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ.

And finally,

‘They weren't talking while the game was playing.’

The word ‘while’ is in this sentence.

Remember that shows 2 past ongoing actions happening at the same time,

ಅದೇ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿರುವ 2 ಹಿಂದಿನ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಗಳನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ,

so ‘While the game was playing they weren't talking’.

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ 'ಆಟವನ್ನು ಆಡುವಾಗ ಅವರು ಮಾತನಾಡುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ' ಎಂದು ನೆನಪಿಡಿ.

They were doing something else.

ಅವರು ಇನ್ನೇನೋ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು.

Let's talk about how to form ‘be’ verb questions for the past continuous tense.

ಹಿಂದಿನ ನಿರಂತರ ಕಾಲಕ್ಕಾಗಿ 'ಬಿ' ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹೇಗೆ ರಚಿಸುವುದು ಎಂಬುದರ ಕುರಿತು ಮಾತನಾಡೋಣ.

Take a look at the first statement.

ಮೊದಲ ಹೇಳಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ನೋಡೋಣ.

It says,

ಇವತ್ತು ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆ ಮಳೆ ಬರುತ್ತಿತ್ತು’ ಎಂದು

‘It was raining this morning.’

ಬರೆದಿದೆ .

In order to turn this into a question, it's quite easy,

ಇದನ್ನು ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯಾಗಿ ಪರಿವರ್ತಿಸಲು, ಇದು ತುಂಬಾ ಸುಲಭ,

all we have to do is change the order of the first two words.

You can answer by saying, ‘Yes, it was.’ or ‘No, it wasn't.’

'ಹೌದು, ಅದು ಆಗಿತ್ತು' ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುವ ಮೂಲಕ ನೀವು ಉತ್ತರಿಸಬಹುದು. ಅಥವಾ 'ಇಲ್ಲ, ಅದು ಆಗಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ.'

The next statement says,

‘They were living there when the fire happened.’

And you can answer by saying,

You'll notice that the examples here all begin with some WH words.

For example, ‘what’, ‘where’, ‘why’, and ‘who’.

In this case, ‘were’.

‘What were they doing last night?’

You'll notice that after the subject comes the ‘verb-ing’.

The next question says,

ಮುಂದಿನ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ,

‘Where was he working last week?’

'ಅವರು ಕಳೆದ ವಾರ ಎಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು?'

In this case the subject is ‘he’ and so the be verb to use is ‘was’.

‘Why was she crying when she finished the book?’

In this case, the subject is ‘she’ and so I put ‘was’ after ‘why’.

‘Two days ago blank not play soccer.’

'ಎರಡು ದಿನಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ಖಾಲಿ ಫುಟ್‌ಬಾಲ್ ಆಡಲಿಲ್ಲ.'

In this case, the first thing that's missing is the ‘be’ verb.

If the subject is ‘you’, can you think of which be verb needs to be put in there?

The correct answer is ‘were’.

Then remember we need to add -ing to the verb.

Now find the mistake in the next sentence.

‘I wasn't study at the library yesterday’.

'ನಾನು ನಿನ್ನೆ ಲೈಬ್ರರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಓದಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ'.

The subject here is ‘I’ and so the ‘be’ verb ‘was’ is correct.

ಇಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಷಯವು 'ನಾನು' ಮತ್ತು ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ 'ಇರು' ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವು 'was' ಸರಿಯಾಗಿದೆ.

Here there's a contraction, ‘I wasn't’ for ‘I was not’.

ಇಲ್ಲಿ 'ನಾನಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ' ಎಂಬುದಕ್ಕೆ 'ನಾನು ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ' ಎಂಬ ಸಂಕೋಚನವಿದೆ.

Now the problem is with the verb.

Remember we need to put ‘–ing’ at the end of the verb.

‘I wasn't studying at the library yesterday.’

And finally, ‘We did meet our friends last weekend.’

Try to find the mistake in the next sentence.

ಮುಂದಿನ ವಾಕ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ತಪ್ಪನ್ನು ಕಂಡುಹಿಡಿಯಲು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸಿ.

‘Jane was looking for us while we get off the plane.’

ನಾವು ವಿಮಾನದಿಂದ ಇಳಿಯುವಾಗ ಜೇನ್ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತಿದ್ದಳು.

The first part of the sentence is correct.

ವಾಕ್ಯದ ಮೊದಲ ಭಾಗ ಸರಿಯಾಗಿದೆ.

‘Jane was looking’

'ಜೇನ್ ನೋಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಳು'

Now the second part of the sentence.

ಈಗ ವಾಕ್ಯದ ಎರಡನೇ ಭಾಗ.

Notice it's not in the past continuous tense.

ಇದು ಹಿಂದಿನ ನಿರಂತರ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಗಮನಿಸಿ.

‘While we get off the plane’

'ನಾವು ವಿಮಾನದಿಂದ ಇಳಿಯುವಾಗ'

So what we need to do is say, ‘were getting’.

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ನಾವು ಮಾಡಬೇಕಾಗಿರುವುದು, 'ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದೆವು' ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುವುದು.

‘Jane was looking for us while we were getting off the plane.’

ನಾವು ವಿಮಾನದಿಂದ ಇಳಿಯುವಾಗ ಜೇನ್ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತಿದ್ದಳು.

The next sentence says, 'I was watching TV while my wife sleep’

ಮುಂದಿನ ವಾಕ್ಯವು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ, 'ನನ್ನ ಹೆಂಡತಿ ಮಲಗಿದ್ದಾಗ ನಾನು ಟಿವಿ ನೋಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೆ'

Again this part of the sentence did not use the past continuous tense.

ಮತ್ತೆ ವಾಕ್ಯದ ಈ ಭಾಗವು ಹಿಂದಿನ ನಿರಂತರ ಸಮಯವನ್ನು ಬಳಸಲಿಲ್ಲ.

My wife is a ‘she’ and so I need to say ‘was sleeping’.

ನನ್ನ ಹೆಂಡತಿ 'ಅವಳು' ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ನಾನು 'ನಿದ್ರಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದೆ' ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಬೇಕಾಗಿದೆ.

‘I was watching TV while my wife was sleeping.’

'ನನ್ನ ಹೆಂಡತಿ ಮಲಗಿದ್ದಾಗ ನಾನು ಟಿವಿ ನೋಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೆ.'

continuous tense.

ನಿರಂತರ ಸಮಯವನ್ನು ಕಲಿಯುವ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬರೂ.

This tense can be a little difficult and a little tricky.

ಈ ಉದ್ವಿಗ್ನತೆಯು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕಷ್ಟ ಮತ್ತು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಟ್ರಿಕಿ ಆಗಿರಬಹುದು.

Especially when it comes to the ‘when’ and ‘while’ usage.

ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿ 'ಯಾವಾಗ' ಮತ್ತು 'ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ' ಬಳಕೆಗೆ ಬಂದಾಗ.

It'll take some practice to really master it, but I know you can do it.

This tense is used to describe an action that took place at a specific time in the past.

ಹಿಂದೆ ಒಂದು ನಿರ್ದಿಷ್ಟ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯನ್ನು ವಿವರಿಸಲು ಈ ಕಾಲವನ್ನು ಬಳಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

This tense can be a little tricky, but don't worry I will guide you through it.

ಈ ಉದ್ವಿಗ್ನತೆಯು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಟ್ರಿಕಿ ಆಗಿರಬಹುದು, ಆದರೆ ಚಿಂತಿಸಬೇಡಿ ನಾನು ಅದರ ಮೂಲಕ ನಿಮಗೆ ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶನ ನೀಡುತ್ತೇನೆ.

There's so much to learn and it's a very important tense.

Let's take a look at the first usage of the past perfect tense.

ಹಿಂದಿನ ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣ ಕಾಲದ ಮೊದಲ ಬಳಕೆಯನ್ನು ನೋಡೋಣ.

This tense can be used to describe an action in the past

ಹಿಂದಿನ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯನ್ನು ವಿವರಿಸಲು ಈ ಉದ್ವಿಗ್ನತೆಯನ್ನು ಬಳಸಬಹುದು,

that happened before another action in the past.

ಅದು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯ ಮೊದಲು ಸಂಭವಿಸಿತು.

Here are some examples.

ಕೆಲವು ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗಳು ಇಲ್ಲಿವೆ.

‘I have visited China before I moved there.’

'ನಾನು ಅಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ತೆರಳುವ ಮೊದಲು ನಾನು ಚೀನಾಕ್ಕೆ ಭೇಟಿ ನೀಡಿದ್ದೇನೆ.'

No matter what the subject you follow with ‘had’,

ನೀವು ಯಾವ ವಿಷಯವನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸಿದರೂ 'ಹೊಂದಿದೆ',

So that's easy.

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅದು ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿದೆ.

‘I had’ ‘Steve had’

'ಐ ಹ್ಯಾಡ್' 'ಸ್ಟೀವ್ ಹ್ಯಾಡ್'

‘The plane had’ and ‘We had’.

'ಪ್ಲೇನ್ ಹ್ಯಾಡ್' ಮತ್ತು 'ವಿ ಹ್ಯಾಡ್'.

Then, we follow with the past participle of the verb.

ನಂತರ, ನಾವು ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದದ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸುವಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ.

In this case, it's ‘visited’.

‘I had visited China.’

Now you'll notice that the second verb is in the past simple tense.

ಎರಡನೇ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸರಳ ಉದ್ವಿಗ್ನದಲ್ಲಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಈಗ ನೀವು ಗಮನಿಸಬಹುದು.

‘I moved there.’

'ನಾನು ಅಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ತೆರಳಿದೆ.'

And I'll talk about that a little bit more later on.

ಮತ್ತು ನಾನು ಅದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ನಂತರ ಮಾತನಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ.

‘Steve had bought the book.’

Again, ‘subject’, ‘had’ and ‘past participle’.

In this case, the verb is ‘buy’.

ಈ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ, ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವು 'ಖರೀದಿ' ಆಗಿದೆ.

‘Steve had bought the book before he read it.’

'ಸ್ಟೀವ್ ಅವರು ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಓದುವ ಮೊದಲು ಖರೀದಿಸಿದ್ದರು.'

Again, we have the simple tense of ‘read’ which is ‘read’.

ಮತ್ತೆ, ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ 'ಓದಿ' ಎಂದರೆ 'ಓದಿ' ಎಂಬ ಸರಳ ಕಾಲವಿದೆ.

And finally, ‘The plane had left by the time I got to the airport.’

ಕೊನೆಗೆ, 'ನಾನು ಏರ್‌ಪೋರ್ಟ್‌ಗೆ ಬರುವಷ್ಟರಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಮಾನ ಹೊರಟಿತ್ತು.'

Again, the first part of this sentence is in the past perfect tense.

ಮತ್ತೊಮ್ಮೆ, ಈ ವಾಕ್ಯದ ಮೊದಲ ಭಾಗವು ಭೂತಕಾಲದ ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿದೆ.

‘The plane had left’.

'ವಿಮಾನ ಹೊರಟಿತ್ತು'.

This is the past participle of ‘leave’.

ಇದು 'ಬಿಡು' ಎಂಬ ಭೂತಕಾಲ.

The second verb says, ‘I got to the airport.’

ಎರಡನೇ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವು, 'ನಾನು ವಿಮಾನ ನಿಲ್ದಾಣಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದೆ' ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.

‘got’ is the past tense of ‘get’.

'ಸಿಕ್ಕಿತು' ಎಂಬುದು 'ಪಡೆಯಲು' ಭೂತಕಾಲ.

Now what these three sentences have in common is that you'll see, ‘before’.

ಈಗ ಈ ಮೂರು ವಾಕ್ಯಗಳು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿದ್ದು, ನೀವು 'ಮೊದಲು' ನೋಡುತ್ತೀರಿ.

‘before’ or ‘by the time’.

'ಮೊದಲು' ಅಥವಾ 'ಸಮಯದ ಹೊತ್ತಿಗೆ'.

They all mean the same thing.

ಅವೆಲ್ಲವೂ ಒಂದೇ ಅರ್ಥ.

The verb that is in the past perfect tense happened first.

ಹಿಂದಿನ ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವು ಮೊದಲು ಸಂಭವಿಸಿದೆ.

The verb that's in the past simple tense happen after.

ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸರಳ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವು ನಂತರ ಸಂಭವಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

So again, for the first example.

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಮತ್ತೊಮ್ಮೆ, ಮೊದಲ ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗಾಗಿ.

‘before I move there’ That happened later.

'ನಾನು ಅಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಹೋಗುವ ಮೊದಲು' ಅದು ನಂತರ ಸಂಭವಿಸಿತು.

Before that, ‘I had already visited China.’

ಅದಕ್ಕೂ ಮೊದಲು, 'ನಾನು ಈಗಾಗಲೇ ಚೀನಾಕ್ಕೆ ಭೇಟಿ ನೀಡಿದ್ದೆ.'

Do you understand how that works?

Let's take a look at the last example.

ಕೊನೆಯ ಉದಾಹರಣೆಯನ್ನು ನೋಡೋಣ.

‘When they arrived, we had already started the game.’

ಅವರು ಬಂದಾಗ, ನಾವು ಈಗಾಗಲೇ ಆಟವನ್ನು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

So maybe they were late or something had happened.

ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಅವರು ತಡವಾಗಿ ಬಂದಿರಬಹುದು ಅಥವಾ ಏನಾದರೂ ಸಂಭವಿಸಿರಬಹುದು.

But ‘When they arrived’, this is the past simple tense.

ಆದರೆ 'ಅವರು ಬಂದರು', ಇದು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸರಳ ಅವಧಿಯಾಗಿದೆ.

So this happened second.

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಇದು ಎರಡನೆಯದಾಗಿ ಸಂಭವಿಸಿತು.

‘We had already started the game.’

'ನಾವು ಈಗಾಗಲೇ ಆಟವನ್ನು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿದ್ದೇವೆ.'

This action had already started.

ಈ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯು ಈಗಾಗಲೇ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭವಾಗಿದೆ.

It started before this action.

ಈ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯ ಮೊದಲು ಇದು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭವಾಯಿತು.

ಮುಂದೆ ಸಾಗೋಣ.

Earlier I mentioned that the past perfect tense can be used to describe an action

ಹಿಂದೆ ನಡೆದ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯ ಮೊದಲು ಹಿಂದೆ ಸಂಭವಿಸಿದ

that happened in the past before another action in the past.

ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯನ್ನು ವಿವರಿಸಲು ಭೂತಕಾಲದ ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣ ಸಮಯವನ್ನು ಬಳಸಬಹುದೆಂದು ನಾನು ಮೊದಲೇ ಹೇಳಿದ್ದೇನೆ

We can do the same thing but also emphasize the duration.

. ನಾವು ಅದೇ ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನು ಮಾಡಬಹುದು ಆದರೆ ಅವಧಿಯನ್ನು ಒತ್ತಿಹೇಳಬಹುದು.

How long that first action happened.

ಮೊದಲ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯು ಎಷ್ಟು ಸಮಯದವರೆಗೆ ಸಂಭವಿಸಿತು.

We do this by using four and a duration.

ನಾಲ್ಕು ಮತ್ತು ಅವಧಿಯನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿಕೊಂಡು ನಾವು ಇದನ್ನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತೇವೆ.

Let's take a look.

ಒಂದು ನೋಟ ಹಾಯಿಸೋಣ.

‘I had owned my computer for two months before it broke.’

'ನನ್ನ ಕಂಪ್ಯೂಟರ್ ಒಡೆಯುವ ಮೊದಲು ಎರಡು ತಿಂಗಳ ಕಾಲ ನಾನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೆ.'

This is very similar to the first usage.

ಇದು ಮೊದಲ ಬಳಕೆಗೆ ಹೋಲುತ್ತದೆ.

‘I had’ and the past participle of the verb.

'I had' ಮತ್ತು ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದದ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಭಾಗ.

This part shows the action that happened earlier in the past.

ಈ ಭಾಗವು ಹಿಂದೆ ಹಿಂದೆ ಸಂಭವಿಸಿದ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

The second part, ‘it broke’.

ಎರಡನೇ ಭಾಗ, 'ಇದು ಮುರಿದುಹೋಯಿತು'.

The past simple tense verb shows the action in the past

ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸರಳ ಉದ್ವಿಗ್ನ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವು ಮೊದಲ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಗಿಂತ ನಂತರ ಸಂಭವಿಸಿದ

that happened later than the first action.

ಹಿಂದಿನ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ .

However, you'll notice that this sentence has a duration, ‘for two months’.

ಆದಾಗ್ಯೂ, ಈ ವಾಕ್ಯವು 'ಎರಡು ತಿಂಗಳ ಕಾಲ' ಅವಧಿಯನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದೆ ಎಂದು ನೀವು ಗಮನಿಸಬಹುದು.

‘I had owned my computer for two months before it broke.’

'ನನ್ನ ಕಂಪ್ಯೂಟರ್ ಒಡೆಯುವ ಮೊದಲು ಎರಡು ತಿಂಗಳ ಕಾಲ ನಾನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೆ.'

All I'm doing here is showing how long the first action had been true.

ನಾನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವುದು ಮೊದಲ ಕ್ರಿಯೆ ಎಷ್ಟು ಸಮಯದವರೆಗೆ ನಿಜವಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತಿದೆ.

Let's take a look at the next example.

ಮುಂದಿನ ಉದಾಹರಣೆಯನ್ನು ನೋಡೋಣ.

‘Jim had been lonely for a long time until he got a puppy.’

'ನಾಯಿ ಮರಿ ಸಿಗುವವರೆಗೂ ಜಿಮ್ ಬಹಳ ಕಾಲ ಏಕಾಂಗಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದ.'

Again, we have subject ‘had’, past participle.

ಮತ್ತೆ, ನಾವು ವಿಷಯ 'ಹೊಂದಿದೆ', ಹಿಂದಿನ ಭಾಗಿ.

And then we have the past simple ‘he got a puppy’.

ತದನಂತರ ನಾವು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸರಳ 'ಅವನಿಗೆ ನಾಯಿಮರಿ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿತು'.

All we're doing here is emphasizing how long first action had been true.

ನಾವು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವುದು ಮೊದಲ ಕ್ರಿಯೆ ಎಷ್ಟು ಸಮಯದವರೆಗೆ ನಿಜವಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಒತ್ತಿಹೇಳುವುದು.

He had been lonely for a long time.

ಅವರು ದೀರ್ಘಕಾಲ ಏಕಾಂಗಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದರು.

That is until the later action, ‘he got a puppy.’

ಅದು ನಂತರದ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯ ತನಕ, 'ಅವನಿಗೆ ನಾಯಿಮರಿ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿತು.'

And finally, ‘She and I had been friends for many years before she became my wife.’

The first part of the sentence is the past perfect.

ವಾಕ್ಯದ ಮೊದಲ ಭಾಗವು ಹಿಂದಿನದು ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿದೆ.

It happened before she became my wife.

ಅವಳು ನನ್ನ ಹೆಂಡತಿಯಾಗುವ ಮೊದಲು ಇದು ಸಂಭವಿಸಿತು.

But I want to explain how long that had been true for many years.

ಆದರೆ ಅದು ಎಷ್ಟು ವರ್ಷಗಳವರೆಗೆ ನಿಜವಾಗಿತ್ತು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ನಾನು ವಿವರಿಸಲು ಬಯಸುತ್ತೇನೆ.

Now I'll introduce how to form the negative in the past perfect tense.

ಭೂತಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಋಣಾತ್ಮಕತೆಯನ್ನು ಹೇಗೆ ರೂಪಿಸುವುದು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಈಗ ನಾನು ಪರಿಚಯಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ.

Take a look at the board.

ಬೋರ್ಡ್ ಅನ್ನು ನೋಡೋಣ.

The first sentence says, ‘I had not eaten at the restaurant before I went yesterday.’

ಮೊದಲ ವಾಕ್ಯ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ, 'ನಾನು ನಿನ್ನೆ ಹೋಗುವ ಮೊದಲು ನಾನು ರೆಸ್ಟೋರೆಂಟ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಊಟ ಮಾಡಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ'.

Again, we have the past perfect tense here and the past simple tense here.

ಮತ್ತೆ, ನಾವು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಭೂತಕಾಲದ ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣ ಸಮಯವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೇವೆ ಮತ್ತು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸರಳ ಉದ್ವಿಗ್ನತೆಯನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

This one is the action that happened earlier in the past

ಇದು ಹಿಂದೆ ಸಂಭವಿಸಿದ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯಾಗಿದೆ

And this one over here is the action that happened later in the past.

and here's the action that happened later in the past.

However, again, because it's negative,

Take a look at the first sentence.

It says, ‘She had eaten lunch by noon.’

‘ಮಧ್ಯಾಹ್ನದ ಹೊತ್ತಿಗೆ ಊಟ ತಿಂದಿದ್ದಳು’ ಎಂದು ಬರೆಯಲಾಗಿದೆ.

Now, to turn this into a question is quite easy.

ಈಗ, ಇದನ್ನು ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯಾಗಿ ಪರಿವರ್ತಿಸುವುದು ತುಂಬಾ ಸುಲಭ.

All you have to do is change the order of the first two words.

You can say, ‘Yes, she had.’

ನೀವು ಹೇಳಬಹುದು, 'ಹೌದು, ಅವಳು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದಳು'.

or ‘No, she hadn't.’

ಅಥವಾ 'ಇಲ್ಲ, ಅವಳು ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ.'

The next sentence says, ‘It had rained before they left.’

‘Had it rained before they left?’

'ಅವರು ಹೊರಡುವ ಮುನ್ನ ಮಳೆ ಬಂದಿತ್ತೇ?'

To reply you can say, ‘Yes, it had.’

Here we see at the beginning of each question a 'WH' word.

Let's take a look at the first question.

You'll notice that after each ‘WH’ word, we have ‘had’.

And then the subject and then the past participle of the verb.

This is the same thing the ‘WH’ word

You'll notice here that we have the word ‘before’, but we didn't write a specific point in time.

The last one says,

ಕೊನೆಯವನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ,

‘How long had she known him before she dated him?’

Let's take a look at how  to answer these questions.

ಈ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಉತ್ತರಿಸುವುದು ಹೇಗೆ ಎಂದು ನೋಡೋಣ.

‘Where had he traveled before?’

'ಈ ಹಿಂದೆ ಎಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಹೋಗಿದ್ದರು?'

‘He had traveled to Europe.’

'ಅವರು ಯುರೋಪ್‌ಗೆ ಪ್ರಯಾಣ ಬೆಳೆಸಿದ್ದರು.'

is one possible answer.

ಒಂದು ಸಂಭವನೀಯ ಉತ್ತರವಾಗಿದೆ.

‘Who had she talked to before?’

'ಅವಳು ಮೊದಲು ಯಾರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದ್ದಳು?'

Here I can say, ‘She had talked to her brother.’

ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನಾನು ಹೇಳಬಹುದು, 'ಅವಳು ತನ್ನ ಸಹೋದರನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದ್ದಳು'.

‘What had he eaten before lunch?’

‘He had eaten sushi before lunch.’

And finally, ‘How long had she known him before she dated him?’

ಮತ್ತು ಅಂತಿಮವಾಗಿ, 'ಅವಳು ಅವನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಡೇಟಿಂಗ್ ಮಾಡುವ ಮೊದಲು ಅವಳು ಅವನನ್ನು ಎಷ್ಟು ಸಮಯದವರೆಗೆ ತಿಳಿದಿದ್ದಳು?'

‘She had known him for three years.’

That is one possible answer.

Take a look at the first sentence.

ಮೊದಲ ವಾಕ್ಯವನ್ನು ನೋಡೋಣ.

‘I blank for six hours before I had a break.’

'ನಾನು ವಿಶ್ರಾಂತಿ ಪಡೆಯುವ ಮೊದಲು ಆರು ಗಂಟೆಗಳ ಕಾಲ ನಾನು ಖಾಲಿ ಮಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ.'

The verb here is ‘work’.

ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವು 'ಕೆಲಸ' ಆಗಿದೆ.

Remember, we need to say ‘I had’.

ನೆನಪಿಡಿ, ನಾವು 'ನಾನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೆ' ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಬೇಕಾಗಿದೆ.

No matter what the subject is, say ‘had’.

Remember, for the negative form, we say ‘had not’

Well, we have the subject here and for the negative, ‘hadn't’ is correct.

then we need the past participle of the verb ‘be’.

Again, no matter what the subject, we have ‘had’ and then the past participle.

Can you find the mistake?

Well, we have the subject and ‘had’, but check this out.

This sentence doesn't look wrong at first.

But remember, in the past perfect tense, we need to say ‘had’.

ಆದರೆ ನೆನಪಿಡಿ, ಹಿಂದಿನ ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ, ನಾವು 'ಹೊಂದಿದೆ' ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಬೇಕಾಗಿದೆ.

One usage of the past perfect continuous tense is to talk about an ongoing action in the

You can use ‘for’ and a duration to talk about

how long that action was in progress.

Here are some examples.

‘I had been waiting for the bus for two hours before it arrived.’

You'll notice that at the beginning.

It doesn't matter what the subject is, we follow with ‘had been’.

Again, four and two hours shows the duration.

The second part says, ‘it arrived’.

This verb is in the past simple tense.

Therefore, that is the second action.

It's the action that this first action happened until this action happened,

The past perfect continuous tense is also used to express cause and effect in the

past.

The verb that's in the past perfect continuous tense shows the cause,

ಹಿಂದಿನ ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣ ನಿರಂತರ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವು ಕಾರಣವನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ,

why something happened.

ಏಕೆ ಏನಾಯಿತು.

We can use ‘because’ or ‘so’ to show the cause and effect.

ಕಾರಣ ಮತ್ತು ಪರಿಣಾಮವನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸಲು ನಾವು 'ಏಕೆಂದರೆ' ಅಥವಾ 'ಹಾಗಾಗಿ' ಬಳಸಬಹುದು.

Here, I'll explain.

ಇಲ್ಲಿ, ನಾನು ವಿವರಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ.

‘Jason was tired because he had been jogging.’

'ಜೇಸನ್ ಅವರು ಜಾಗಿಂಗ್ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಸುಸ್ತಾಗಿದ್ದರು.'

The first part of the sentence is in the past tense.

'ಜೇಸನ್ ದಣಿದಿದ್ದರು,' ಆದಾಗ್ಯೂ, ನಾವು 'ಯಾಕೆ?'

Well, because, ‘he had been jogging’.

The second part of this sentence is in the past perfect continuous tense.

we follow with ‘had been’ and jogging – ‘verb -ing’.

ನಾವು 'had been' ಮತ್ತು ಜಾಗಿಂಗ್ ಅನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ - 'verb -ing'.

‘he had been jogging’ This shows why Jason was tired.

'ಅವನು ಜಾಗಿಂಗ್ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ' ಇದು ಜೇಸನ್ ಏಕೆ ದಣಿದಿದ್ದಾನೆಂದು ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

The next sentence says, ‘The pavement’ or it ‘was wet because

Similar to the first sentence, ‘it had been raining’ shows the cause.

ಮೊದಲ ವಾಕ್ಯದಂತೆಯೇ, 'ಇದು ಮಳೆಯಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು' ಕಾರಣವನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

Why was the pavement wet?

ಪಾದಚಾರಿ ಮಾರ್ಗ ಏಕೆ ಒದ್ದೆಯಾಗಿತ್ತು?

‘The pavement was wet because it had been raining.’

ಮಳೆ ಬಂದಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಪಾದಚಾರಿ ಮಾರ್ಗ ಒದ್ದೆಯಾಗಿತ್ತು.

In this sentence, we see a little difference.

ಈ ವಾಕ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ, ನಾವು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸವನ್ನು ನೋಡುತ್ತೇವೆ.

‘The children had been playing’ Again, this is the past perfect continuous

'ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಆಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು' ಮತ್ತೆ, ಇದು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣ ನಿರಂತರ

tense.

ಅವಧಿಯಾಗಿದೆ.

‘had been playing’ The second part says, ‘the room was a mess’.

I used ‘so’.

'ಸೋ' ಬಳಸಿದ್ದೇನೆ.

So the order has been changed but the meaning is the same.

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಕ್ರಮವನ್ನು ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ ಆದರೆ ಅರ್ಥ ಒಂದೇ ಆಗಿದೆ.

This, ‘the children had been playing’ is why the room was a mess.

‘ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಆಟವಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು’ ಎಂಬ ಕಾರಣಕ್ಕೆ ಕೊಠಡಿ ಅವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿತ್ತು.

This is the cause and this is the effect.

ಇದೇ ಕಾರಣ ಮತ್ತು ಇದೇ ಪರಿಣಾಮ.

Let's move on.

ಮುಂದೆ ಸಾಗೋಣ.

Now let's go into the negative form of the past perfect continuous tense.

ಈಗ ನಾವು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣ ನಿರಂತರ ಉದ್ವಿಗ್ನತೆಯ ಋಣಾತ್ಮಕ ರೂಪಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗೋಣ.

Here are some examples.

‘I had not been working for a day before I quit.’

So no matter what the subject ‘I’, ‘you’, ‘she’, or ‘it’,

Here is the first example.

ಮೊದಲ ಉದಾಹರಣೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ.

‘He had been driving all day before he arrived.’

'ಅವರು ಬರುವ ಮೊದಲು ಇಡೀ ದಿನ ಡ್ರೈವಿಂಗ್ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು.'

Now, to turn this into a question, all we have to do is change the order of the first

Take a look at the first sentence.

Try to fill in the blank with the verb ‘work’ in this tense.

Remember, the negative form for this tense starts with the subject

Remember, we're practicing the past perfect continuous.

ನೆನಪಿಡಿ, ನಾವು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣ ನಿರಂತರತೆಯನ್ನು ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

In this case, we need ‘had’ after the subject, not ‘has’.

ಈ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ, ವಿಷಯದ ನಂತರ ನಮಗೆ 'ಹೊಂದಿದೆ' ಬೇಕು, 'ಹೊಂದಿದೆ' ಅಲ್ಲ.
