How to Pronounce GH in English | Hard G, Silent GH | Pronunciation Lesson

Let's get started.

စလိုက်ကြစို့။

Let's take a list of words.

စကားလုံးများစာရင်းယူကြပါစို့။

ghost

တစ္ဆေ

spaghetti

spaghetti

straight

ဖြောင့်ဖြော

enough

င့်

high

မြင့်မားသော

longhand

လက်ရှည်

Now if we take a look at that list

ယခု ထိုစာရင်းကို လေ့လာကြည့်လျှင်

the first thing you can notice

ပထမဆုံး သင်သတိပြုမိနိုင်သည်

is that the letters 'gh'

မှာ စာလုံးတစ်လုံး၏အစ၊

can be placed in the beginning of a word,

စကားလုံး၏အလယ် သို့မဟုတ် အဆုံးတွင် 'gh' ကို

in the middle of a word,

ထားနိုင်သည် ။

or at the end of a word.

စကားလုံးတစ်လုံး။

And as you can hear,

မင်းကြားတဲ့အတိုင်းပဲ

the sound is different.

အသံက မတူဘူး။

Now let's get to it together.

ကဲ အတူတူ စလိုက်ရအောင်။

'ghost' is the first word.

'Ghost' သည် ပထမစကားလုံးဖြစ်သည်။

Now what is the sound what can you hear?

အခု မင်း ဘာသံတွေ ကြားနေရတာလဲ။

What you can hear very clearly is this 'g' sound.

သင်အလွန်ရှင်းလင်းစွာကြားနိုင်သည့်အရာမှာ ဤ 'g' အသံဖြစ်သည်။

'ghost' it's called a hard 'g'.

'ghost' ကို hard 'g' လို့ခေါ်တယ်။

Most of the time

စကားလုံးတစ်လုံးရဲ့အ စ

when you have the letters 'g'  'h' at the beginning of a word

မှာ 'g' 'h' စာလုံးတွေရှိနေရင်

it will be pronounced /g/ a hard 'g'.

/g/ a hard 'g' ဆိုပြီး အသံထွက်ပါလိမ့်မယ်။

The second word is 'spaghetti'.

ဒုတိယစကားလုံးကတော့ 'spaghetti' ပါ။

Now the 'gh' is in the middle of the word

ယခု 'gh' သည် စကားလုံး၏ အလယ်တွင်ရှိနေပြီး

and what sound can you hear?

မည်သည့်အသံကို သင်ကြားနိုင်မည်နည်း။

Again, you can hear that very hard 'g' sound.

တစ်ဖန်၊ အလွန်ပြင်းထန်သော 'g' အသံကို သင်ကြားနိုင်သည်။

So when 'gh' is in the middle of a word

ထို့ကြောင့် 'gh' သည် စကားလုံးတစ်လုံး၏အလယ်တွင်

it is sometimes pronounced /g/

တခါတရံ /g/ ဟုအသံထွက်

but then if we take the third word,

သော်လည်း တတိယစကားလုံးကိုယူလျှင်

straight

'gh' သည် စကားလုံးအလယ်တ

again 'gh' is also in the middle of the word

ည့်တည့် တွင်ရှိသော်လည်း

but the sound is different.

အသံက ကွဲပြားသည်။

It's what we call a silent 'gh'.

အသံတိတ် 'gh' ဟုခေါ်သည်။

'straight' you can't actually hear anything

'ဖြောင့်' ဆိုရင် ဘာမှ မကြားရဘူး

okay so sometimes,

ဆိုတော့ တစ်ခါတလေ၊

it's when gh is in the middle  of the word it's silent.

gh က စကားလုံးရဲ့ အလယ်မှာ အသံတိတ်နေတာမျိုးပါ။

Now our next example is a very interesting case.

ယခု ကျွန်ုပ်တို့၏ နောက်ဥပမာသည် အလွန်စိတ်ဝင်စားဖွယ်ကောင်းသော ကိစ္စဖြစ်သည်။

It's the word 'enough'.

'လုံလောက်တယ်' ဆိုတဲ့ စကားလုံးပါ။

And as you can see

'gh' ဆိုတာ စကားလုံးရဲ့ အဆုံးမှာ

'gh' is at the end of the word

မြင်နိုင်သလို

and what can you hear?

ဘာကြားနိုင်လဲ။

Can you hear a 'g' sound or a silent 'gh'?

'g' အသံ သို့မဟုတ် အသံတိတ် 'gh' ကြားနိုင်ပါသလား။

Well, no, actually you can hear an 'f' sound

ဟုတ်တယ်၊ တကယ်တော့ မင်း 'f' အသံကြားရ

enough

လောက်အောင် လုံလောက်တယ်

So sometimes with some words in English,

ဒါကြောင့် တစ်ခါတရံ အင်္ဂလိပ်လို စကားလုံးတချို့နဲ့

'gh' is placed at the end of the word

'gh' ကို စကားလုံးရဲ့အဆုံးမှာ ထည့်ထားပြီး

and is pronounced 'f' like enough.

'f' လို့ အသံထွက်ရလောက်အောင်ပါပဲ။

Our next example is the word 'high'

ကျွန်ုပ်တို့၏ နောက်ဥပမာမှာ 'မြင့်' ဟူသော စကားလုံး၏

and again 'gh' is at the end of a word

အဆုံးတွင် 'gh' သည် စကားလုံးတစ်လုံး၏ အဆုံးတွင် ရှိသော်လည်း

but the sound is not an 'f' sound this time

အသံသည် 'f' အသံမဟုတ်သော်လည်း ဤအချိန်သည်

it's a silent gh

အသံတိတ် gh

high

မြင့်သော

so sometimes 'gh' placed at  the end of a word is silent.

ကြောင့် တစ်ခါတစ်ရံ 'gh' ဟူသော စကားလုံး၏အဆုံးတွင် ထည့်ထားသည်။ အသံတိတ်နေသည်။

And our very last example was 'longhand'.

ကျွန်ုပ်တို့၏ နောက်ဆုံးဥပမာမှာ 'လက်ရှည်' ဖြစ်သည်။

Now with longhand, as you know I'm sure it's a compound word 

ရှည်လျားသောလက်ဖြင့်၊ သင်သိသည့်အတိုင်း၊ ၎င်းသည် ပေါင်းစပ်စကားလုံးဖြစ်ကြောင်း သေချာသော

so it's an association of two different words it's a special case.

ကြောင့် ၎င်းသည် မတူညီသောစကားလုံးနှစ်လုံး၏ ပေါင်းစည်းမှုမှာ အထူးကိစ္စရပ်ဖြစ်သည်။

So in this case, the sound is not 'gh' 

ထို့ကြောင့် ဤကိစ္စတွင်၊ အသံသည် 'gh' မဟုတ်ဘဲ

the two letters are separate because you first have the word long 

စာလုံးနှစ်လုံးကို သီးခြားခွဲထားသောကြောင့် သင့်တွင် ပထမစာလုံးအရှည်ရှိ

and then you have the word hand so you can actually hear both sounds 

ပြီးနောက် သင့်တွင် စာလုံးလက်ပါရှိသောကြောင့် အသံနှစ်ခုလုံးကို

in a separate way longhand.

ရှည်လျားစွာသီးခြားနားဆင်နိုင်သည်။

Okay.

ဟုတ်ပြီ

So I hope you remember when 'gh' is at the beginning of a word

ဒါကြောင့် 'gh' ဟာ စကားလုံးတစ်လုံးရဲ့အစမှာ

most of the time it's a hard 'g' sound like ghost.

ခဲယဉ်းတဲ့ 'g' ဆိုတဲ့ အသံဟာ တစ္ဆေလို ဖြစ်နေတဲ့အခါ မင်းမှတ်မိမယ်လို့ မျှော်လင့်ပါတယ်။

When it's in the middle most of the time it's silent

အချိန်အများစုမှာ အလယ်မှာ 'ဖြောင့်' သလိုမျိုး အသံတိတ်နေ

like 'straight' but not all the time

ပေမယ့်

we have examples of a heart  'g' sound like spaghetti.

spaghetti လိုမျိုး နှလုံးသားရဲ့ ဥပမာ 'g' ရဲ့ ဥပမာတွေ ရှိမနေပါ

When it's at the end of the word,

ဘူး ။ စကားလုံး၏အဆုံးတွင်၊

most of the time it's silent like high

အများစုမှာ အမြင့်ကဲ့သို့ အသံတိတ်နေသော်လည်း

but not all the time we have example...  examples sorry of an 'f' sound like enough. 

ကျွန်ုပ်တို့တွင် သာဓကများရှိနေသည့်အချိန်တိုင်းမဟုတ်ပါ... ဥပမာ 'f' အသံအတွက် တောင်းပန်ပါတယ် လုံလောက်ပါတယ်။

And finally we have compound nouns which are a special case, okay. 

နောက်ဆုံးတွင် အထူးကိစ္စရပ်တစ်ခုဖြစ်သည့် ပေါင်းစပ်နာမ်များရှိသည်။

Well, let's now review other words and find out how this 'gh' sound is pronounced.

Now because compound nouns are two separate nouns,

ပေါင်းစပ်နာမ်များသည် သီးခြားနာမ်နှစ်ခုဖြစ်သောကြောင့်၊

you can clearly hear the sounds of the letter 'g'

အက္ခရာ 'g'

and the letter 'h'.

နှင့် အက္ခရာ 'h' တို့၏ အသံများကို ရှင်းရှင်းလင်းလင်းကြားနိုင်သည်။

Okay, repeat after me.

ကောင်းပြီ၊ ငါ့နောက်ကို ထပ်လုပ်ပါ။

And finally, let's practice four sentences.

Now remember, be very careful

listen very carefully

နားထောင်ပြီး

and try to remember how these  'gh' sounds are pronounced.

ဤ 'gh' အသံများကို မည်သို့ အသံထွက်သည်ကို မှတ်မိရန် ကြိုးစားပါ။

Repeat after me.

ငါဆိုတာလိုက်ဆိုပါ။

The ghost had a light cough.

တစ္ဆေက ချောင်းဆိုးတယ်။

My neighbor had enough spaghetti.

ငါ့အိမ်နီးချင်းမှာ spaghetti လုံလုံလောက်လောက်ရှိတယ်။

His daughter went to the ghetto at night.

သူ့သမီးက ညဘက်ဆို ဂူထဲကို သွားတယ်။

We ought to laugh at the neighbor.

အိမ်နီးချင်းကို ရယ်သင့်တယ်။

One final word I want to talk to you about

နောက်ဆုံးပြောချင်တဲ့ စကားတစ်ခွန်း

is the word hiccup.

ကတော့ ကြို့ထိုးခြင်းပါပဲ။

Now most of the time the  word hiccup is spelled c-u-p

အခု hiccup ဆိုတဲ့ စကားလုံး အများစုကို cup လို့ စာလုံးပေါင်းပါတယ်

okay the American spelling

OK လို့ အမေရိကန် စာလုံးပေါင်း

and it's pronounced hiccup

နဲ့ ကြို့ထိုး လို့ အသံထွက် ထား

but if you ever go to the UK,

ပေမယ့် UK ကို သွား လည် ဖူးရင်

you might see the old British spelling.

အင်္ဂလိပ် စာလုံးပေါင်း အဟောင်း ကို တွေ့ နိုင်ပါတယ်။

It's spelled with 'gh'

'gh' ဖြင့် စာလုံးပေါင်း

and it's still pronounced hiccup.

ပြီး hiccup ဟု အသံထွက်နေသေးသည်။

It's the same pronunciation it's the p sound

p အသံထွက်ချင်းတူ

but the spelling is different  so that's an interesting one.

ပေမယ့် စာလုံးပေါင်းက မတူတဲ့အတွက် စိတ်ဝင်စားဖို့ကောင်းပါတယ်။
