How to Pronounce GH in English | Hard G, Silent GH | Pronunciation Lesson

Let's get started.

Let's take a list of words.

단어 목록을 살펴보겠습니다.

Now if we take a look at that list

이제 그 목록을 살펴보면

the first thing you can notice

가장 먼저 눈에 띄는

is that the letters 'gh'

것은 문자 'gh'가

can be placed in the beginning of a word,

단어의 시작 부분,

in the middle of a word,

단어 중간

or at the end of a word.

또는 끝 부분에 배치될 수 있다는 것입니다. 단어.

And as you can hear,

그리고 보시다시피

the sound is different.

소리가 다릅니다.

Now let's get to it together.

이제 함께 살펴보겠습니다.

'ghost' is the first word.

'유령'이 첫 번째 단어입니다.

Now what is the sound what can you hear?

이제 당신이 들을 수 있는 소리는 무엇입니까?

What you can hear very clearly is this 'g' sound.

여러분이 아주 또렷하게 들을 수 있는 것은 이 'g' 소리입니다.

'ghost' it's called a hard 'g'.

'유령'은 단단한 'g'라고 부릅니다.

Most of the time

대부분의 경우

when you have the letters 'g'  'h' at the beginning of a word

단어 시작 부분에 'g' 'h' 문자가 있으면

it will be pronounced /g/ a hard 'g'.

/g/는 단단한 'g'로 발음됩니다.

The second word is 'spaghetti'.

두 번째 단어는 '스파게티'입니다.

Now the 'gh' is in the middle of the word

이제 단어 중간에 'gh'가 있는데

and what sound can you hear?

어떤 소리가 들리나요?

Again, you can hear that very hard 'g' sound.

이번에도 매우 단단한 'g' 소리를 들을 수 있습니다.

So when 'gh' is in the middle of a word

그래서 단어 중간에 'gh'가 있으면

it is sometimes pronounced /g/

/g/로 발음되기도

but then if we take the third word,

하는데 세 번째 단어를 취하면

straight

다시

again 'gh' is also in the middle of the word

'gh'도 단어 중간에 있지만

but the sound is different.

소리가 다릅니다.

It's what we call a silent 'gh'.

그것은 우리가 묵음 'gh'라고 부르는 것입니다.

'straight' you can't actually hear anything

'straight' 실제로는 아무 소리도 들리지 않아서

okay so sometimes,

가끔

it's when gh is in the middle  of the word it's silent.

gh가 단어 중간에 있을 때는 묵음입니다.

Now our next example is a very interesting case.

이제 다음 예는 매우 흥미로운 사례입니다.

It's the word 'enough'.

'충분하다'는 말이에요.

And as you can see

보시다시피

'gh' is at the end of the word

단어 끝에 'gh'가 있는데

and what can you hear?

무슨 소리가 들리나요?

Can you hear a 'g' sound or a silent 'gh'?

'g' 소리나 조용한 'gh' 소리가 들리나요?

Well, no, actually you can hear an 'f' sound

글쎄요, 아니, 실제로는 'f' 소리를 충분히

enough

들을 수 있습니다.

So sometimes with some words in English,

그래서 가끔 영어의 일부 단어에서는

'gh' is placed at the end of the word

'gh'가 단어 끝에 위치하여

and is pronounced 'f' like enough.

Our next example is the word 'high'

and again 'gh' is at the end of a word

'gh'는 단어 끝에 있지만

but the sound is not an 'f' sound this time

it's a silent gh

조용한 gh

high

high

so sometimes 'gh' placed at  the end of a word is silent.

이므로 때때로 'gh'가 단어 끝에 배치됩니다. 침묵합니다.

And our very last example was 'longhand'.

그리고 우리의 마지막 예는 '긴 손'이었습니다.

Now with longhand, as you know I'm sure it's a compound word 

이제 손으로 쓰는 경우, 아시다시피 복합어이므로

so it's an association of two different words it's a special case.

두 개의 다른 단어가 결합된 특별한 경우입니다.

So in this case, the sound is not 'gh' 

따라서 이 경우 소리는 'gh'가 아닙니다.

the two letters are separate because you first have the word long 

두 글자는 분리되어 있습니다. 왜냐하면 먼저 long이라는 단어가 있고

and then you have the word hand so you can actually hear both sounds

in a separate way longhand.

So I hope you remember when 'gh' is at the beginning of a word

그래서 'gh'가 단어의 시작 부분에 있을 때

most of the time it's a hard 'g' sound like ghost.

대부분의 경우 유령처럼 어려운 'g' 소리라는 것을 기억하시기 바랍니다.

When it's in the middle most of the time it's silent

중간에 있을 때는 대부분 'straight'처럼 조용 하지만

like 'straight' but not all the time

스파게티처럼 하트 'g' 소리가 나는

we have examples of a heart  'g' sound like spaghetti.

경우가 항상 있는 것은 아닙니다

When it's at the end of the word,

. 단어의 끝에 오면

most of the time it's silent like high

대부분의 경우 높음처럼 조용

but not all the time we have example...  examples sorry of an 'f' sound like enough. 

하지만 항상 그런 것은 아닙니다. 예를 들면... 죄송합니다. 'f' 소리는 충분합니다.

And finally we have compound nouns which are a special case, okay. 

그리고 마지막으로 특별한 경우인 복합명사가 있습니다.

Well, let's now review other words and find out how this 'gh' sound is pronounced.

you can clearly hear the sounds of the letter 'g'

One final word I want to talk to you about

is the word hiccup.

는 딸꾹질입니다.

Now most of the time the  word hiccup is spelled c-u-p

이제 대부분의 경우 hiccup이라는 단어는 cup으로 표기됩니다.

okay the American spelling

미국식 철자

and it's pronounced hiccup

와 마찬가지로 hiccup으로 발음됩니다.

but if you ever go to the UK,

하지만 영국에 가면

you might see the old British spelling.

오래된 영국식 철자를 볼 수 있습니다.

It's spelled with 'gh'

'gh'로 표기되어

and it's still pronounced hiccup.

있는데 여전히 딸꾹질로 발음됩니다.

It's the same pronunciation it's the p sound

p발음과 똑같지

but the spelling is different  so that's an interesting one.

만 철자가 달라서 재미있네요.
