How to Pronounce GH in English | Hard G, Silent GH | Pronunciation Lesson

Let's get started.

চল শুরু করি.

Let's take a list of words.

শব্দের একটি তালিকা নেওয়া যাক।

ghost

ভূতের

spaghetti

স্প্যাগেটি

straight

স্ট্রেইট

enough

যথেষ্ট

high

হাই

longhand

Now if we take a look at that list

এখন আমরা যদি সেই তালিকার দিকে তাকাই তাহলে

the first thing you can notice

প্রথমেই আপনি লক্ষ্য করতে পারবেন

is that the letters 'gh'

যে 'gh' অক্ষরগুলি

can be placed in the beginning of a word,

একটি শব্দের শুরুতে,

in the middle of a word,

একটি শব্দের মাঝখানে

or at the end of a word.

বা শেষে স্থাপন করা যেতে পারে। একটি শব্দ.

And as you can hear,

এবং আপনি যেমন শুনতে পারেন,

the sound is different.

শব্দ ভিন্ন।

Now let's get to it together.

এখন এর একসাথে এটি পেতে.

'ghost' is the first word.

'ভূত' প্রথম শব্দ।

Now what is the sound what can you hear?

এখন কিসের আওয়াজ কি শুনতে পাচ্ছেন?

What you can hear very clearly is this 'g' sound.

আপনি যা খুব স্পষ্টভাবে শুনতে পাচ্ছেন তা হল এই 'জি' ধ্বনি।

'ghost' it's called a hard 'g'.

'ভূত' এটাকে কঠিন 'g' বলে।

Most of the time

বেশিরভাগ সময়

when you have the letters 'g'  'h' at the beginning of a word

যখন আপনার একটি শব্দের শুরুতে 'g' 'h' অক্ষর থাকে তখন

it will be pronounced /g/ a hard 'g'.

এটি উচ্চারিত হবে /g/ একটি কঠিন 'g'।

The second word is 'spaghetti'.

দ্বিতীয় শব্দটি 'স্প্যাগেটি'।

Now the 'gh' is in the middle of the word

এখন 'ঘ' শব্দের মাঝখানে আছে

and what sound can you hear?

এবং আপনি কোন শব্দ শুনতে পাচ্ছেন?

Again, you can hear that very hard 'g' sound.

আবার, আপনি খুব কঠিন 'g' শব্দ শুনতে পারেন।

So when 'gh' is in the middle of a word

it is sometimes pronounced /g/

but then if we take the third word,

again 'gh' is also in the middle of the word

It's what we call a silent 'gh'.

'straight' you can't actually hear anything

'সরাসরি' আপনি আসলে কিছুই শুনতে পাচ্ছেন না

okay so sometimes,

তাই মাঝে মাঝে,

it's when gh is in the middle  of the word it's silent.

যখন gh শব্দের মাঝখানে থাকে তখন এটি নীরব থাকে।

Now our next example is a very interesting case.

এখন আমাদের পরবর্তী উদাহরণ একটি খুব আকর্ষণীয় কেস.

It's the word 'enough'.

এটা 'যথেষ্ট' শব্দ।

And as you can see

আর আপনি দেখতে পাচ্ছেন যে

'gh' is at the end of the word

শব্দের শেষে 'ঘ' আছে

and what can you hear?

এবং আপনি কী শুনতে পাচ্ছেন?

Can you hear a 'g' sound or a silent 'gh'?

আপনি একটি 'g' শব্দ বা একটি নীরব 'gh' শুনতে পারেন?

Well, no, actually you can hear an 'f' sound

ঠিক আছে, না, আসলে আপনি একটি 'f' শব্দ

enough

So sometimes with some words in English,

'gh' is placed at the end of the word

and is pronounced 'f' like enough.

Our next example is the word 'high'

and again 'gh' is at the end of a word

এবং আবার 'ঘ' শব্দের শেষে আছে

but the sound is not an 'f' sound this time

কিন্তু ধ্বনিটি 'এফ' ধ্বনি নয় এবার

it's a silent gh

so sometimes 'gh' placed at  the end of a word is silent.

তাই কখনও কখনও একটি শব্দের শেষে 'gh' বসানো হয়। নীরব

And our very last example was 'longhand'.

এবং আমাদের খুব শেষ উদাহরণ ছিল 'লংহ্যান্ড'।

Now with longhand, as you know I'm sure it's a compound word 

এখন লংহ্যান্ড দিয়ে, আপনি জানেন যে আমি নিশ্চিত যে এটি একটি যৌগিক শব্দ

so it's an association of two different words it's a special case.

তাই এটি দুটি ভিন্ন শব্দের একটি অ্যাসোসিয়েশন এটি একটি বিশেষ ক্ষেত্রে।

So in this case, the sound is not 'gh'

the two letters are separate because you first have the word long

and then you have the word hand so you can actually hear both sounds

When it's at the end of the word,

most of the time it's silent like high

but not all the time we have example...  examples sorry of an 'f' sound like enough.

And finally we have compound nouns which are a special case, okay.

Well, let's now review other words and find out how this 'gh' sound is pronounced.

you can clearly hear the sounds of the letter 'g'

One final word I want to talk to you about

is the word hiccup.

হল হিক্কা শব্দ।

Now most of the time the  word hiccup is spelled c-u-p

এখন বেশিরভাগ সময় hiccup শব্দের বানান হয় cup

okay the American spelling

ঠিক আছে আমেরিকান বানান

and it's pronounced hiccup

এবং এটি উচ্চারিত hiccup

but if you ever go to the UK,

কিন্তু আপনি যদি কখনও UK তে যান,

you might see the old British spelling.

আপনি পুরানো ব্রিটিশ বানান দেখতে পাবেন।

It's spelled with 'gh'

এটি 'gh' দিয়ে বানান করা হয়েছে

and it's still pronounced hiccup.

এবং এটি এখনও উচ্চারিত হচ্ছে হিক্কা।

It's the same pronunciation it's the p sound

এটি একই উচ্চারণ এটি p শব্দ

but the spelling is different  so that's an interesting one.
