How to Pronounce GH in English | Hard G, Silent GH | Pronunciation Lesson

Let's get started.

ನಾವೀಗ ಆರಂಭಿಸೋಣ.

Let's take a list of words.

ಪದಗಳ ಪಟ್ಟಿಯನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳೋಣ.

Now if we take a look at that list

ಈಗ ನಾವು ಆ ಪಟ್ಟಿಯನ್ನು ಗಮನಿಸಿದರೆ

the first thing you can notice

ನೀವು ಗಮನಿಸಬಹುದಾದ ಮೊದಲ ವಿಷಯವೆಂದರೆ

is that the letters 'gh'

'ಘ್' ಅಕ್ಷರಗಳನ್ನು

can be placed in the beginning of a word,

ಪದದ ಆರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ,

in the middle of a word,

ಪದದ ಮಧ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ

or at the end of a word.

ಅಥವಾ ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇರಿಸಬಹುದು ಒಂದು ಪದ.

And as you can hear,

ಮತ್ತು ನೀವು ಕೇಳುವಂತೆ,

the sound is different.

ಧ್ವನಿ ವಿಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿದೆ.

Now let's get to it together.

ಈಗ ಅದನ್ನು ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಪಡೆಯೋಣ.

'ghost' is the first word.

'ಭೂತ' ಮೊದಲ ಪದ.

Now what is the sound what can you hear?

ಈಗ ನೀವು ಕೇಳಬಹುದಾದ ಶಬ್ದ ಯಾವುದು?

What you can hear very clearly is this 'g' sound.

ನೀವು ತುಂಬಾ ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟವಾಗಿ ಕೇಳುವುದು ಈ 'ಜಿ' ಶಬ್ದ.

'ghost' it's called a hard 'g'.

'ಭೂತ' ಇದನ್ನು ಹಾರ್ಡ್ 'ಜಿ' ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

Most of the time

ನೀವು ಪದದ ಆರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ 'g' 'h' ಅಕ್ಷರಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿರುವ

when you have the letters 'g'  'h' at the beginning of a word

ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಸಮಯ

it will be pronounced /g/ a hard 'g'.

ಅದನ್ನು /g/ ಒಂದು ಹಾರ್ಡ್ 'g' ಎಂದು ಉಚ್ಚರಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

The second word is 'spaghetti'.

ಎರಡನೆಯ ಪದ 'ಸ್ಪಾಗೆಟ್ಟಿ'.

Now the 'gh' is in the middle of the word

ಈಗ 'ಘ್' ಪದದ ಮಧ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿದೆ

and what sound can you hear?

ಮತ್ತು ನೀವು ಯಾವ ಶಬ್ದವನ್ನು ಕೇಳಬಹುದು?

Again, you can hear that very hard 'g' sound.

but then if we take the third word,

ಆದರೆ ನಾವು ಮೂರನೇ ಪದವನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡರೆ,

straight

ನೇರವಾಗಿ

again 'gh' is also in the middle of the word

ಮತ್ತೆ 'gh' ಸಹ ಪದದ ಮಧ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿದೆ

but the sound is different.

ಆದರೆ ಧ್ವನಿ ವಿಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ.

It's what we call a silent 'gh'.

ಅದನ್ನೇ ನಾವು ಮೂಕ 'ಘ್' ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯುತ್ತೇವೆ.

'straight' you can't actually hear anything

'ನೇರ' ನೀವು ನಿಜವಾಗಿ ಏನನ್ನೂ ಕೇಳಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ

okay so sometimes,

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ,

it's when gh is in the middle  of the word it's silent.

gh ಪದದ ಮಧ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾಗ ಅದು ಮೌನವಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ.

Now our next example is a very interesting case.

ಈಗ ನಮ್ಮ ಮುಂದಿನ ಉದಾಹರಣೆಯು ಬಹಳ ಆಸಕ್ತಿದಾಯಕ ಪ್ರಕರಣವಾಗಿದೆ.

It's the word 'enough'.

ಇದು 'ಸಾಕು' ಎಂಬ ಪದ.

And as you can see

ಮತ್ತು ನೀವು ನೋಡುವಂತೆ

'gh' is at the end of the word

'ಘ್' ಪದದ ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿದೆ

and what can you hear?

ಮತ್ತು ನೀವು ಏನು ಕೇಳಬಹುದು?

Can you hear a 'g' sound or a silent 'gh'?

Well, no, actually you can hear an 'f' sound

So sometimes with some words in English,

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲವು ಪದಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ,

'gh' is placed at the end of the word

'gh' ಅನ್ನು ಪದದ ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇರಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ

and is pronounced 'f' like enough.

ಮತ್ತು 'f' ಅನ್ನು ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಎಂದು ಉಚ್ಚರಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

Our next example is the word 'high'

ನಮ್ಮ ಮುಂದಿನ ಉದಾಹರಣೆಯೆಂದರೆ 'ಹೈ' ಪದ

and again 'gh' is at the end of a word

ಮತ್ತು ಮತ್ತೆ 'ಘ್' ಪದದ ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ

but the sound is not an 'f' sound this time

ಆದರೆ ಶಬ್ದವು 'ಎಫ್' ಶಬ್ದವಲ್ಲ, ಈ ಬಾರಿ

it's a silent gh

ಅದು ನಿಶ್ಯಬ್ದ ಘ್ ಆಗಿದೆ

high

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ

so sometimes 'gh' placed at  the end of a word is silent.

ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ 'ಘ್' ಅನ್ನು ಪದದ ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇರಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಮೌನವಾಗಿದೆ.

And our very last example was 'longhand'.

ಮತ್ತು ನಮ್ಮ ಕೊನೆಯ ಉದಾಹರಣೆ 'ಲಾಂಗ್‌ಹ್ಯಾಂಡ್'.

Now with longhand, as you know I'm sure it's a compound word 

ಈಗ ಲಾಂಗ್‌ಹ್ಯಾಂಡ್‌ನೊಂದಿಗೆ, ನಿಮಗೆ ತಿಳಿದಿರುವಂತೆ ಇದು ಸಂಯುಕ್ತ ಪದ ಎಂದು ನನಗೆ ಖಾತ್ರಿಯಿದೆ

so it's an association of two different words it's a special case.

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಇದು ಎರಡು ವಿಭಿನ್ನ ಪದಗಳ ಸಂಯೋಜನೆಯಾಗಿದೆ ಇದು ವಿಶೇಷ ಪ್ರಕರಣವಾಗಿದೆ.

So in this case, the sound is not 'gh' 

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಈ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ, ಧ್ವನಿಯು 'ಘ್' ಅಲ್ಲ,

the two letters are separate because you first have the word long 

ಎರಡು ಅಕ್ಷರಗಳು ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕವಾಗಿರುತ್ತವೆ ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ನೀವು ಮೊದಲು ದೀರ್ಘ ಪದವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೀರಿ

and then you have the word hand so you can actually hear both sounds 

ಮತ್ತು ನಂತರ ನೀವು ಪದವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೀರಿ ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ನೀವು ಎರಡೂ ಶಬ್ದಗಳನ್ನು

in a separate way longhand.

So I hope you remember when 'gh' is at the beginning of a word

ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಪದದ ಆರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ 'ಘ್' ಎಂದಾಗ

most of the time it's a hard 'g' sound like ghost.

ಅದು ಘೋಸ್ಟ್ ನಂತಹ ಕಠಿಣವಾದ 'ಜಿ' ಶಬ್ದವನ್ನು ನೀವು ನೆನಪಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತೀರಿ ಎಂದು ನಾನು ಭಾವಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ.

When it's in the middle most of the time it's silent

ಅದು ಮಧ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿರುವಾಗ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಸಮಯ ಅದು

like 'straight' but not all the time

'ನೇರ' ದಂತೆ ಮೌನವಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ ಆದರೆ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲೂ

we have examples of a heart  'g' sound like spaghetti.

ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ಹೃದಯ 'g' ಶಬ್ದದ ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗಳಿವೆ.

When it's at the end of the word,

ಇದು ಪದದ ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುವಾಗ,

most of the time it's silent like high

ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಸಮಯ ಅದು ಎತ್ತರದಂತೆ ಮೌನವಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ

but not all the time we have example...  examples sorry of an 'f' sound like enough. 

ಆದರೆ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲೂ ನಮಗೆ ಉದಾಹರಣೆ ಇಲ್ಲ ... ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗಳು ಕ್ಷಮಿಸಿ ಒಂದು 'ಎಫ್' ಶಬ್ದದ ಧ್ವನಿ ಸಾಕು.

And finally we have compound nouns which are a special case, okay. 

ಮತ್ತು ಅಂತಿಮವಾಗಿ ನಾವು ಸಂಯುಕ್ತ ನಾಮಪದಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೇವೆ ಅದು ವಿಶೇಷ ಪ್ರಕರಣವಾಗಿದೆ, ಸರಿ.

Well, let's now review other words and find out how this 'gh' sound is pronounced.

ಸರಿ, ಈಗ ಬೇರೆ ಪದಗಳನ್ನು ಪರಿಶೀಲಿಸೋಣ ಮತ್ತು ಈ 'ಘ್' ಶಬ್ದವನ್ನು ಹೇಗೆ ಉಚ್ಚರಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಕಂಡುಹಿಡಿಯೋಣ.

This first category is for the hard 'g' sound

Now because compound nouns are two separate nouns,

ನೀವು 'g' ಅಕ್ಷರ ಮತ್ತು 'h' ಅಕ್ಷರದ

you can clearly hear the sounds of the letter 'g'

ಶಬ್ದಗಳನ್ನು ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟವಾಗಿ ಕೇಳಬಹುದು

and the letter 'h'.

Now remember, be very careful

listen very carefully

and try to remember how these  'gh' sounds are pronounced.

The ghost had a light cough.

ಪ್ರೇತಕ್ಕೆ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕೆಮ್ಮು ಇತ್ತು.

My neighbor had enough spaghetti.

ನನ್ನ ನೆರೆಹೊರೆಯವರು ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಸ್ಪಾಗೆಟ್ಟಿಯನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದರು.

His daughter went to the ghetto at night.

ಅವನ ಮಗಳು ರಾತ್ರಿ ಘೆಟ್ಟೋಗೆ ಹೋದಳು.

We ought to laugh at the neighbor.

ನಾವು ನೆರೆಹೊರೆಯವರನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ ನಗಬೇಕು.

One final word I want to talk to you about

ನಾನು ನಿಮ್ಮೊಂದಿಗೆ ಮಾತನಾಡಲು ಬಯಸುವ ಒಂದು ಅಂತಿಮ ಪದವೆಂದರೆ

is the word hiccup.

ಬಿಕ್ಕಳಿಕೆ.

Now most of the time the  word hiccup is spelled c-u-p

ಈಗ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಸಮಯ hiccup ಪದವನ್ನು

okay the American spelling

ಅಮೇರಿಕನ್ ಕಾಗುಣಿತದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಪ್ ಸರಿ

and it's pronounced hiccup

ಎಂದು ಉಚ್ಚರಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅದನ್ನು ಬಿಕ್ಕಳಿಕೆ ಎಂದು ಉಚ್ಚರಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ

but if you ever go to the UK,

ಆದರೆ ನೀವು ಎಂದಾದರೂ UK ಗೆ ಹೋದರೆ,

you might see the old British spelling.

ನೀವು ಹಳೆಯ ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷ್ ಕಾಗುಣಿತವನ್ನು ನೋಡಬಹುದು.

It's spelled with 'gh'

ಇದನ್ನು 'gh' ಎಂದು ಉಚ್ಚರಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ

and it's still pronounced hiccup.

ಮತ್ತು ಇದು ಇನ್ನೂ ಬಿಕ್ಕಳಿಕೆ ಎಂದು ಉಚ್ಚರಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

It's the same pronunciation it's the p sound

ಇದು ಒಂದೇ ಉಚ್ಚಾರಣೆ ಇದು p ಧ್ವನಿ

but the spelling is different  so that's an interesting one.

ಆದರೆ ಕಾಗುಣಿತವು ವಿಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿದೆ ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅದು ಆಸಕ್ತಿದಾಯಕವಾಗಿದೆ.
