How to Pronounce GH in English | Hard G, Silent GH | Pronunciation Lesson

Let's get started.

آو شروع کریں.

Let's take a list of words.

آئیے الفاظ کی فہرست لیتے ہیں۔

ghost

Ghost

spaghetti

spaghetti

straight

Now if we take a look at that list

اب اگر ہم اس فہرست پر ایک نظر ڈالیں تو

the first thing you can notice

سب سے پہلے آپ کو نظر آئے گا

is that the letters 'gh'

کہ حروف 'gh' کو

can be placed in the beginning of a word,

کسی لفظ کے شروع میں،

in the middle of a word,

کسی لفظ کے بیچ میں

or at the end of a word.

یا آخر میں رکھا جا سکتا ہے۔ ایک لفظ.

And as you can hear,

اور جیسا کہ آپ سن سکتے ہیں،

the sound is different.

آواز مختلف ہے۔

Now let's get to it together.

اب آئیے مل کر اس تک پہنچیں۔

'ghost' is the first word.

'بھوت' پہلا لفظ ہے۔

Now what is the sound what can you hear?

اب کیا آواز ہے کیا سن سکتے ہو؟

What you can hear very clearly is this 'g' sound.

جو آپ بہت واضح طور پر سن سکتے ہیں وہ یہ 'جی' آواز ہے۔

'ghost' it's called a hard 'g'.

'بھوت' اسے سخت 'جی' کہا جاتا ہے۔

Most of the time

زیادہ تر وقت

when you have the letters 'g'  'h' at the beginning of a word

جب آپ کے پاس کسی لفظ کے شروع میں حروف 'g' 'h' ہوں گے

it will be pronounced /g/ a hard 'g'.

تو اس کا تلفظ /g/ ایک مشکل 'g' ہوگا۔

The second word is 'spaghetti'.

دوسرا لفظ 'سپگیٹی' ہے۔

Now the 'gh' is in the middle of the word

اب 'غ' لفظ کے بیچ میں ہے

and what sound can you hear?

اور آپ کونسی آواز سن سکتے ہیں؟

Again, you can hear that very hard 'g' sound.

ایک بار پھر، آپ وہ بہت سخت 'جی' آواز سن سکتے ہیں۔

So when 'gh' is in the middle of a word

تو جب 'gh' کسی لفظ کے بیچ میں ہوتا ہے

it is sometimes pronounced /g/

تو کبھی کبھی اس کا تلفظ /g/ ہوتا ہے

but then if we take the third word,

لیکن پھر اگر ہم تیسرا لفظ لیں تو

straight

سیدھا

again 'gh' is also in the middle of the word

پھر 'gh' بھی لفظ کے بیچ میں ہے

but the sound is different.

لیکن آواز مختلف ہے۔

It's what we call a silent 'gh'.

اسے ہم خاموش 'gh' کہتے ہیں۔

'straight' you can't actually hear anything

'براہ راست' آپ حقیقت میں کچھ بھی ٹھیک

okay so sometimes,

نہیں سن سکتے تو کبھی کبھی،

it's when gh is in the middle  of the word it's silent.

جب gh لفظ کے بیچ میں ہوتا ہے تو یہ خاموش ہوجاتا ہے۔

Now our next example is a very interesting case.

اب ہماری اگلی مثال ایک بہت ہی دلچسپ کیس ہے۔

It's the word 'enough'.

یہ لفظ 'کافی' ہے۔

And as you can see

اور جیسا کہ آپ دیکھ سکتے ہیں کہ

'gh' is at the end of the word

لفظ کے آخر میں 'gh' ہے

and what can you hear?

اور آپ کیا سن سکتے ہیں؟

Can you hear a 'g' sound or a silent 'gh'?

کیا آپ 'g' آواز یا خاموش 'gh' سن سکتے ہیں؟

Well, no, actually you can hear an 'f' sound

ٹھیک ہے، نہیں، درحقیقت آپ 'f' کی آواز

enough

کافی سن سکتے ہیں

So sometimes with some words in English,

تو بعض اوقات انگریزی میں کچھ الفاظ کے ساتھ

'gh' is placed at the end of the word

لفظ کے آخر میں 'gh' رکھا جاتا ہے

and is pronounced 'f' like enough.

اور کافی کی طرح 'f' کا تلفظ کیا جاتا ہے۔

Our next example is the word 'high'

ہماری اگلی مثال لفظ 'ہائی' ہے

and again 'gh' is at the end of a word

اور دوبارہ 'gh' کسی لفظ کے آخر میں ہے

but the sound is not an 'f' sound this time

لیکن آواز 'f' آواز نہیں ہے اس بار

it's a silent gh

یہ خاموش gh

high

ہائی ہے

so sometimes 'gh' placed at  the end of a word is silent.

تو کبھی کبھی لفظ کے آخر میں 'gh' رکھا جاتا ہے۔ خاموش ہے.

And our very last example was 'longhand'.

اور ہماری آخری مثال 'لونگ ہینڈ' تھی۔

Now with longhand, as you know I'm sure it's a compound word 

اب لانگ ہینڈ کے ساتھ، جیسا کہ آپ جانتے ہیں کہ مجھے یقین ہے کہ یہ ایک مرکب لفظ ہے

so it's an association of two different words it's a special case.

لہذا یہ دو مختلف الفاظ کا مجموعہ ہے یہ ایک خاص معاملہ ہے۔

So in this case, the sound is not 'gh' 

تو اس صورت میں، آواز 'gh' نہیں ہے

the two letters are separate because you first have the word long

and then you have the word hand so you can actually hear both sounds

in a separate way longhand.

So I hope you remember when 'gh' is at the beginning of a word

most of the time it's a hard 'g' sound like ghost.

When it's in the middle most of the time it's silent

جب یہ درمیان میں ہوتا ہے تو زیادہ تر وقت یہ

like 'straight' but not all the time

'سیدھا' کی طرح خاموش رہتا ہے لیکن ہر وقت نہیں

we have examples of a heart  'g' sound like spaghetti.

ہمارے پاس اسپگیٹی جیسی دل کی 'جی' آواز کی مثالیں موجود ہیں۔

When it's at the end of the word,

جب یہ لفظ کے آخر میں ہوتا ہے، تو

most of the time it's silent like high

زیادہ تر وقت یہ ہائی کی طرح خاموش ہوتا ہے

but not all the time we have example...  examples sorry of an 'f' sound like enough. 

لیکن ہر وقت ہمارے پاس مثال نہیں ہوتی... مثالیں کافی کی طرح 'f' آواز کی معذرت۔

And finally we have compound nouns which are a special case, okay. 

اور آخر کار ہمارے پاس مرکب اسم ہیں جو ایک خاص صورت ہیں، ٹھیک ہے۔

Well, let's now review other words and find out how this 'gh' sound is pronounced.

اچھا، آئیے اب دوسرے الفاظ کا جائزہ لیتے ہیں اور معلوم کرتے ہیں کہ اس 'gh' آواز کا تلفظ کیسے ہوتا ہے۔

Now because compound nouns are two separate nouns,

you can clearly hear the sounds of the letter 'g'

آپ حرف 'g' اور حرف 'h'

and the letter 'h'.

کی آوازیں واضح طور پر سن سکتے ہیں

and try to remember how these  'gh' sounds are pronounced.

One final word I want to talk to you about

ایک آخری لفظ جس کے بارے میں میں آپ سے بات کرنا چاہتا ہوں وہ

is the word hiccup.

ہے ہچکی۔

Now most of the time the  word hiccup is spelled c-u-p

اب زیادہ تر وقت لفظ ہچکی کا ہجے کپ ہوتا ہے

okay the American spelling

ٹھیک ہے امریکی ہجے

and it's pronounced hiccup

اور اس کا تلفظ ہچکی ہے

but if you ever go to the UK,

لیکن اگر آپ کبھی برطانیہ جائیں تو

you might see the old British spelling.

آپ کو پرانی برطانوی ہجے نظر آئے گی۔

It's spelled with 'gh'

اس کی ہجے 'gh' کے ساتھ ہے

and it's still pronounced hiccup.

اور اس کا تلفظ اب بھی ہچکی ہے۔

It's the same pronunciation it's the p sound

یہ ایک ہی تلفظ ہے یہ p آواز ہے

but the spelling is different  so that's an interesting one.

لیکن ہجے مختلف ہے لہذا یہ ایک دلچسپ ہے۔
