How to Pronounce GH in English | Hard G, Silent GH | Pronunciation Lesson

Let's get started.

Let's take a list of words.

Now if we take a look at that list

the first thing you can notice

Now what is the sound what can you hear?

What you can hear very clearly is this 'g' sound.

'ghost' it's called a hard 'g'.

"شبح" به آن "g" سخت می گویند.

Most of the time

بیشتر اوقات

when you have the letters 'g'  'h' at the beginning of a word

وقتی حروف 'g' 'h' را در ابتدای کلمه دارید،

it will be pronounced /g/ a hard 'g'.

/g/ یک 'g' سخت تلفظ می شود.

The second word is 'spaghetti'.

کلمه دوم "اسپاگتی" است.

Now the 'gh' is in the middle of the word

حالا «غ» در وسط کلمه است

and what sound can you hear?

و چه صدایی را می‌شنوید؟

Again, you can hear that very hard 'g' sound.

دوباره، شما می توانید آن صدای بسیار سخت "g" را بشنوید.

So when 'gh' is in the middle of a word

پس وقتی 'gh' در وسط یک کلمه است

it is sometimes pronounced /g/

but then if we take the third word,

again 'gh' is also in the middle of the word

but the sound is different.

It's what we call a silent 'gh'.

'straight' you can't actually hear anything

"مستقیم" در واقع نمی توانید چیزی را بشنوید

okay so sometimes,

it's when gh is in the middle  of the word it's silent.

Now our next example is a very interesting case.

حالا مثال بعدی ما یک مورد بسیار جالب است.

It's the word 'enough'.

این کلمه "به اندازه کافی" است.

And as you can see

'gh' is at the end of the word

"gh" در انتهای کلمه است

and what can you hear?

Can you hear a 'g' sound or a silent 'gh'?

Well, no, actually you can hear an 'f' sound

So sometimes with some words in English,

'gh' is placed at the end of the word

Our next example is the word 'high'

and again 'gh' is at the end of a word

but the sound is not an 'f' sound this time

it's a silent gh

so sometimes 'gh' placed at  the end of a word is silent.

And our very last example was 'longhand'.

و آخرین مثال ما "دراز" بود.

Now with longhand, as you know I'm sure it's a compound word 

در حال حاضر با طولانی مدت، همانطور که می دانید، من مطمئن هستم که این یک کلمه مرکب است،

so it's an association of two different words it's a special case.

So in this case, the sound is not 'gh'

Now because compound nouns are two separate nouns,

you can clearly hear the sounds of the letter 'g'

and the letter 'h'.

One final word I want to talk to you about

آخرین کلمه ای که می خواهم با شما صحبت کنم

is the word hiccup.

کلمه سکسکه است.

Now most of the time the  word hiccup is spelled c-u-p

در حال حاضر اکثر اوقات کلمه سکسکه به صورت cup نوشته می شود،

okay the American spelling

املای آمریکایی خوب است

and it's pronounced hiccup

و به صورت هیکاپ تلفظ می شود،

but if you ever go to the UK,

اما اگر زمانی به بریتانیا بروید،

you might see the old British spelling.

ممکن است املای قدیمی بریتانیا را ببینید.

It's spelled with 'gh'

با 'gh' املا می شود

and it's still pronounced hiccup.

و هنوز هم hiccup تلفظ می شود.

It's the same pronunciation it's the p sound

این همان تلفظ است، صدای p است،

but the spelling is different  so that's an interesting one.

اما املای آن متفاوت است، بنابراین جالب است.
