In this video,, I’m going to talk about the two similar and sometimes confusing English

이번 영상에서는 유사하고 때로는 혼동을 주는 두 가지 영어 표현인 'since'와 'for'에 대해 이야기하겠습니다

expressions – ‘since’ and ‘for’.

These two time expressions are  commonly confused in English.

이 두 시간 표현은 영어에서 흔히 혼동됩니다.

But after watching this video,  

하지만 이 영상을 보고 나면,

you'll have a good understanding of the  difference and when to use these words.

차이점과 이 단어를 언제 사용해야 하는지 잘 이해하게 될 것입니다.

Let’s get started.

시작하자.

Let’s start with ‘since’

'부터'부터 시작해 보겠습니다.

‘since’ shows when a past action first started.

'이후'는 과거 작업이 처음 시작된 시기를 나타냅니다.

We always need a starting point with ‘since’

'since'는 항상 시작점이 필요

so when you use ‘since’, you always  need a specific time expression.

하므로 'since'를 사용할 때는 항상 구체적인 시간 표현이 필요합니다.

Let's take a look at some example sentences.

몇 가지 예문을 살펴보겠습니다.

The first sentence says,

첫 번째 문장은

‘I have been working since  8 o'clock this morning.’

'오늘 아침 8시부터 일했어요'입니다.

You'll notice that the specific time expression comes after ‘since’.

'부터' 뒤에 특정 시간 표현이 오는 것을 알 수 있습니다.

And it shows when this person started working.

그리고 이 사람이 언제 일을 시작했는지 보여줍니다.

The next sentence says,

다음 문장은

‘She has been on a diet since August.’

'그녀는 8월부터 다이어트를 했다'이다.

The specific time expression here is August

여기서 구체적인 시간 표현은 August

and it comes after ‘since’.

이며 'since' 뒤에 옵니다.

It shows when she started dieting.

그녀가 다이어트를 시작한 시기를 보여줍니다.

Okay, now, I will talk about ‘for’.

자, 이제 'for'에 대해 이야기하겠습니다.

We use ‘for’ to express a  length of time in English.

영어에서는 시간의 길이를 표현할 때 'for'를 사용합니다.

It is used to express duration or  how long something has happened.

기간이나 어떤 일이 발생한 기간을 표현하는 데 사용됩니다.

Let's take a look at some examples.

몇 가지 예를 살펴보겠습니다.

The first sentence says,

첫 번째 문장은

‘I have been working for five hours.’

'나는 5시간 동안 일했습니다.'라고 되어 있습니다.

In this case, we have a duration five hours

이 경우 지속 시간은 5시간

and it comes after ‘for’.

이고 'for' 뒤에 옵니다.

The next sentence says,

다음 문장은

‘She has been on a diet for three months’.

'그녀는 3개월 동안 다이어트를 했다'입니다.

Again, we have three months which shows the duration

다시 말하지만, 그녀가 다이어트를 한

- how long she has been on a diet.

기간을 보여주는 3개월이 있습니다 .

Again, notice it comes after the word ‘for’.

다시 말하지만, 'for'라는 단어 뒤에 이 단어가 옵니다.

Now, let's do a checkup.

이제 점검을 해보겠습니다.

In this conversation, there are two sentences.

이 대화에는 두 개의 문장이 있습니다.

In one of the sentences, we should use ‘since’

문장 중 하나에서는 'since'를 사용해야

and in the other we should use ‘for’.

하고 다른 문장에서는 'for'를 사용해야 합니다.

Take a moment to think about  where we use ‘since’ and ‘for’.

잠시 시간을 내어 'since'와 'for'를 어디에 사용하는지 생각해 보세요.

‘A' says,

'A'가

‘Have you been working here _blank_ 2008?’

'2008년에 _blank_ 여기서 일하셨나요?'라고 말합니다.

You'll notice the specific time expression ‘2008’.

특정 시간 표현인 '2008'을 볼 수 있습니다.

Remember, when we use a specific time expression,

특정 시간 표현을 사용할 때는

we put ‘since’ before the expression.

표현 앞에 'since'를 붙인다는 점을 기억하세요.

So ‘A’ says,

그러면 A씨는

‘Have you been working here since 2008?’

'2008년부터 여기서 일하셨나요?' 라고 묻습니다.

‘B’ says, ‘No, I’ve only been  working here _blank_ two weeks.’

'B'는 '아니요, 저는 여기서 _공백_ 2주만 일했습니다.'라고 말합니다.

‘two weeks’ is a duration.

'2주'는 기간이다.

It shows how long this action has been happening.

이 작업이 발생한 기간이 표시됩니다.

So the best answer here is ‘for’.

따라서 여기서 가장 좋은 대답은 'for'입니다.

‘No, I’ve only been working here for two weeks.’

'아니요, 저는 여기서 일한 지 2주밖에 안 됐어요.'

So let's take a look at the whole conversation.

그럼 전체 대화를 살펴보겠습니다.

‘A’ says,

A씨

‘Have you been working here since 2008?’

는 '2008년부터 여기서 일하셨나요?'라고 말했다.

And ‘B’ says, ‘No, I’ve only  been working here for two weeks.’

그리고 B는 '아니요. 여기서 일한 지 2주밖에 안 됐어요.'라고 말합니다.

Now you know the difference  between ‘since’ and ‘for’.

이제 '부터'와 '~을 위해'의 차이를 알았습니다.

First, let’s start with ‘accept’.

Listen carefully to how I say it.

It's a verb.

동사입니다.

The main meaning of ‘accept’ is to agree or  receive something that is offered to you.

'accept'의 주된 의미는 자신에게 제안된 어떤 것에 동의하거나 받는 것입니다.

Someone wants to give you  something and you accept.

누군가가 당신에게 뭔가를 주고 싶어하면 당신은 받아들인다.

We accept things.

우리는 사물을 받아들입니다.

Let’s look at some examples.

몇 가지 예를 살펴보겠습니다.

The first sentence says,

첫 번째 문장은

‘I can accept a gift from my friend.’

'친구로부터 선물을 받을 수 있습니다.'입니다.

So if a friend offers a gift to you,

따라서 친구가 당신에게 선물을 주면

you can take it or accept it.

당신은 그것을 받거나 받아들일 수 있습니다.

The second sentence says,

두 번째 문장은

‘When Tony asked Leslie to marry him,

'Tony가 Leslie에게 결혼을 요청했을 때

she happily accepted.’

So Tony asked Leslie to marry him and she agreed.

She accepted this offer.

Now, I will talk about ‘except’.

Listen to how I say it.

It is often a preposition.

이는 전치사인 경우가 많습니다.

It means to not include something.

아무것도 포함하지 않는다는 뜻입니다.

Let’s look at some example sentences.

몇 가지 예문을 살펴보겠습니다.

The first sentence says,

첫 번째 문장은

‘I like all fruit except grapes.’

'나는 포도를 제외한 모든 과일을 좋아한다'입니다.

So out of all the fruits,

그래서 저는 과일 중에 다

I like them all,

좋아하는데,

but I don't like grapes.

포도는 안 좋아해요.

I am showing that I don't want to  include grapes in this sentence.

나는 이 문장에 포도를 포함하고 싶지 않다는 것을 보여주고 있습니다.

The next sentence says,

다음 문장은

‘Everyone passed the exam except for Robin.’

'로빈을 제외한 모두가 시험에 합격했습니다.'입니다.

So again, there's a group  and everybody is included

다시 말하지만, 그룹이 있고

except for Robin.

로빈을 제외한 모든 사람이 포함됩니다.

Robin is not included in the  group that passed the exam.

로빈은 시험에 합격한 그룹에 포함되지 않습니다.

Now, let's do a checkup.

이제 점검을 해보겠습니다.

In this conversation, there are two sentences.

이 대화에는 두 개의 문장이 있습니다.

In one of the sentences, we  should use the word ‘accept’.

문장 중 하나에서는 'accept'라는 단어를 사용해야 합니다.

In the other, we should use ‘except’.

다른 경우에는 '제외'를 사용해야 합니다.

Take a moment to think about where  we use ‘accept’ and ‘except’.

잠시 시간을 내어 '수락'과 '제외'를 어디에 사용하는지 생각해 보세요.

‘A’ says,

A가 '

‘Did you _blank_ the new company position?’

새 회사 직책을 _공백_했습니까?'라고

A new company position is an offer

말합니다. 새로운 회사 직위는 제안

and someone can choose to take it.

이며 누군가가 이를 수락하도록 선택할 수 있습니다.

In that case, you say ‘accept’.

그럴 땐 '받아들인다'고 하세요.

‘Did you accept the new company position?’

'새로운 회사의 자리를 수락하셨나요?'

‘B’ says, ‘Yes, I now have to  work every day _blank_ Sundays.’

'B'는 '예, 이제 매일 _blank_ 일요일에 일해야 합니다.'라고 말합니다.

This person now has to work almost  every day of the week but Sundays.

이 사람은 이제 일요일을 제외하고 거의 매일 일해야 합니다.

So we're not including one  of the days of the week.

따라서 우리는 요일 중 하루를 포함하지 않습니다.

And so we use ‘except’.

그래서 '제외'를 사용합니다.

Again ‘B’ says, ‘Yes, I now have  to work every day except Sundays.’

다시 B는 '네, 이제 일요일 빼고 매일 일해야 해요'라고 말합니다.

Now, let's take a look at this as a whole.

이제 이를 전체적으로 살펴보겠습니다.

‘A’ says,

A씨는

‘Did you accept the new company position?’

'새로운 회사의 자리를 수락하셨나요?'라고 말합니다.

And ‘B’ says, ‘Yes, I now have to  work every day except Sundays.’

그리고 B는 '네, 이제 일요일 빼고 매일 일해야 해요'라고 말합니다.

Now you know the difference  between ‘accept’ and ‘except’.

'a'가 행동이라는 것을 기억하는 것입니다.

Verbs are actions.

동사는 행동입니다.

The first sentence says,

‘Junk food affects your health.’

'정크푸드가 건강에 영향을 미친다'입니다.

We all know that junk food can change our health.

정크 푸드가 건강을 바꿀 수 있다는 것은 모두가 알고 있는 사실입니다.

It can make it bad or worse.

그것은 상황을 악화시키거나 악화시킬 수 있습니다.

The next sentence says,

‘New technologies continue to affect how we live.’

This is something we also know.

Now, I will talk about ‘effect’.

It's usually a noun.

보통 명사입니다.

It means a result.

Let’s look at some example sentences.

The first sentence says,

‘Pollution has a negative  effect on the environment.’

'오염은 환경에 부정적인 영향을 미칩니다.'라고 말합니다.

We all know that pollution causes  negative results in the environment.

우리 모두는 오염이 환경에 부정적인 결과를 가져온다는 것을 알고 있습니다.

You'll notice that in this  sentence we used ‘effect’ as a noun

이 문장에서 우리는 '효과'를 명사

– ‘a negative effect’.

, 즉 '부정적인 효과'로 사용했다는 것을 알 수 있습니다.

The next sentence says,

다음 문장은

‘Spicy food has a bad effect on my stomach.’

'매운 음식은 위장에 나쁜 영향을 끼친다'입니다.

For some people spicy food causes  some bad results in the body.

어떤 사람들에게는 매운 음식이 몸에 나쁜 결과를 가져옵니다.

So again, we use ‘effect’ like result - a noun.

그래서 다시, 결과(명사)와 같은 '효과'를 사용합니다.

Now, let's do a checkup.

In the sentence below we need  to use ‘effect’ and ‘affect’.

Take a moment to think about  where we use these words.

The sentence says,

Take a look at the first ‘blank’.

The _blank_

Remember, if there's a ‘the’,

기억하세요. 'the'가 있으면

we usually need a noun

일반적으로 명사가 필요

so we use ‘effect’.

하므로 '효과'를 사용합니다.

‘The effect of the war…’

'전쟁의 효과...'

that means the results of the war

이는 전쟁의 결과가

‘…will _blank_ the economy.’

'...경제를 _공백_할 것'을 의미합니다.

Here we have ‘will’ and so we need a verb.

여기에는 'will'이 있으므로 동사가 필요합니다.

That's ‘affect’.

바로 '영향'이다.

‘The effect of the war will affect the economy.’

'전쟁의 영향은 경제에 영향을 미칠 것이다.'

Now you know the difference  between ‘affect’ and ‘effect’.

It's an adverb.

it means to a large degree or completely.

It can also mean truly or considerably.

Let’s look at some examples.

The first sentence says,

‘We've had quite a lot of rain this year.’

The word ‘quite’ emphasizes  that there was a lot of rain.

The next sentence says,

‘I hadn't seen Rebecca in quite a while.’

Now, I will talk about the word ‘quiet’.

It is usually an adjective.

주로 형용사입니다.

It means there is very little or no sound.

Let's take a look at some examples.

The first sentence says,

첫 번째 문장은

‘She spoke in a quiet voice.’

'그녀는 조용한 목소리로 말했다'입니다.

This means that her voice was very little - I almost couldn't hear it.

이는 그녀의 목소리가 매우 작았음을 의미합니다. 저는 거의 들을 수 없었습니다.

The next sentence says,

다음 문장은

‘It's so quiet without the kids here.’

'여기 아이들이 없으면 너무 조용해요'입니다.

When the kids are not here, it's quiet.

There is not much noise.

Now, let's do a checkup.

In the sentence below, we need to fill  in the blanks with ‘quiet’ or ‘quite’.

아래 문장에서는 'quiet' 또는 'quite'로 빈칸을 채워야 합니다.

Take a moment to think about  where these words belong.

잠시 시간을 내어 이 단어들이 어디에 속하는지 생각해 보십시오.

The first part of the sentence says,

문장의 첫 번째 부분은

‘He's _blank_ intelligent.’

'그는 _공백_ 지능적입니다.' 라고 되어 있습니다.

I want to use the word that  shows that he's very intelligent,

나는 이 사람이 얼마나 똑똑한지를 강조하면서 그가 매우 똑똑하다는 것을 보여주는 단어를 사용하고 싶습니다

emphasizing how intelligent this person is.

So which word do I use?

그럼 어떤 단어를 사용해야 할까요?

I use ‘quite’.

저는 '아주'를 사용합니다.

‘He's quite intelligent.’

'그 사람은 꽤 똑똑해요.'

The second part of the sentence says,

문장의 두 번째 부분은

‘but he is a very _blank_ child.’

'그러나 그는 매우 _공백_ 아이입니다.'

We need an adjective to describe this child.

라고 말합니다. 이 아이를 설명하려면 형용사가 필요합니다.

‘quiet’ is the right word to use.

'조용하다'가 사용하기에 적합한 단어입니다.

So we should say,

그래서 우리는

‘He's quite intelligent, but  he is a very quiet child.’

'그 사람은 꽤 똑똑하지만, 아주 조용한 아이에요'라고

Now you know the difference  between ‘quite’ and ‘quiet’.

말해야 합니다 . 이제 '조용함'과 '조용함'의 차이를 아셨을 겁니다.

They can be confusing especially in writing

특히 글을 쓸 때 혼란스러울 수

but now you know how to use them well.

Let’s start with ‘say’.

'말하다'부터 시작해보자.

It is an irregular verb so  the past tense form is ‘said’.

불규칙 동사이므로 과거형이 'sed'입니다.

It means to speak, express something  in words or to tell someone something.

말하다, 말로 무엇인가를 표현하다, 또는 누군가에게 무엇인가를 말하다라는 뜻입니다.

Let’s look at some example sentences.

몇 가지 예문을 살펴보겠습니다.

The first sentence says,

첫 번째 문장은

‘I’m sorry what did you say?’

'미안하다고 뭐라고 말씀하셨나요?'

Maybe I couldn't hear you but I want  to know the words that you spoke

입니다. 못 들었을 수도 있지만 네가 한 말을 알고 싶어서

so I say, ‘What did you say?’

'뭐라고 했어?'라고 물어본다.

The next sentence says,

다음 문장은

‘My mom said ‘hi’.’

'엄마가 '안녕하세요'라고 말씀하셨어요.'입니다.

I’m reporting the words that she spoke.

나는 그녀가 한 말을 보고합니다.

‘She said ‘hi’.’

'그녀가 '안녕하세요'라고 했어요.'

Now, I will talk about ‘tell’.

이제 '말하다'에 대해 이야기하겠습니다.

It is also an irregular verb.

불규칙 동사이기도 합니다.

The past tense is ‘told’.

과거형은 '말하다'입니다.

It means to say something to someone

특히 정보나 지시를 할 때

especially when giving  information or instructions.

누군가에게 무엇인가를 말하는 것을 의미합니다 .

Let’s look at some examples.

몇 가지 예를 살펴보겠습니다.

The first sentence says,

첫 번째 문장은

‘He told his mom that he was tired.’

'그는 엄마에게 피곤하다고 말했다'입니다.

He shared this information with his mom.

그는 이 정보를 엄마에게 공유했습니다.

So we can use ‘told’.

그래서 우리는 'told'를 사용할 수 있습니다.

‘He told his mom that he was tired.’

The next sentence says,

‘Tara told john that she loved him.’

Remember, for ‘say’,

We ‘say’ something.

In this case, the something is that you liked her.

For the verb ‘tell’

Let’s start with ‘still’.

'아직'부터 시작해보자.

It is used as an adverb.

부사로 사용됩니다.

It is used to show situations that started  in the past and continue to the present time.

과거에 시작되어 현재까지 계속되는 상황을 나타낼 때 사용됩니다.

Let’s look at some example sentences.

몇 가지 예문을 살펴보겠습니다.

The first sentence says, ‘It is still snowing.’

첫 번째 문장은 '아직도 눈이 내리고 있다'입니다.

The word 'still' emphasizes that snowing  started in the past and it continues now.

'여전히'라는 단어는 눈이 과거에 시작되어 지금도 계속되고 있음을 강조합니다.

The next sentence says,

다음 문장은

‘My grandfather still jogs every morning.’

'저의 할아버지는 아직도 매일 아침 조깅을 하십니다.'입니다.

So here I want to show that my grandfather is old

but he still continues this action now.

Now, I will talk about ‘already’.

It is also an adverb.

We use ‘already’ to refer to something which  has happened before the moment of speaking.

우리는 말하는 순간 이전에 일어난 일을 언급하기 위해 'already'를 사용합니다.

We use already to emphasize some unexpected or surprising situation.

Let’s look at some examples.

The first sentence says,

‘Jenny's already here so we can start.’

We didn't expect Jenny to be here but she is here.

So we want to emphasize that unexpected situation.

The next sentence says,

It is an adverb.

It is used to ask if something  has happened or occurred.

어떤 일이 일어났는지, 일어났는지 묻는 데 사용됩니다. 또한

It can also be used to show  that something has not happened

말하는 순간에 어떤 일이 일어나지 않았음을 보여주기 위해 사용될 수도 있습니다

at the moment of speaking.

It is usually placed at the end of a sentence.

일반적으로 문장의 끝에 위치합니다.

Let’s look at some example sentences.

The first sentence says,

‘She hasn't done her homework yet.’

'그녀는 아직 숙제를 하지 않았다'입니다.

The ‘yet’ at the end of this sentence

이 문장 끝에 있는 '아직'은

shows that at this moment,  at this moment of speaking,

지금 이 순간, 말하는 이 순간에도

she hasn't completed this task.

그녀가 이 일을 완수하지 않았다는 것을 보여준다.

She hasn't done her homework.

그녀는 숙제를 하지 않았습니다.

However, it also means that she will do it soon.

그러나 그것은 곧 그녀가 그것을 할 것이라는 의미이기도 합니다.

The next sentence says,

‘They haven't woken up yet.’

Similarly, the ‘yet’ at the end of this sentence  means at this time they're still sleeping.

Let’s get started.

Let’s start with ‘borrow’.

'빌려주기'부터 시작해보자.

It is a verb.

동사입니다.

It means to take something from someone with the plan of giving it back after using it.

사용 후 돌려주려고 누군가에게서 물건을 가져가는 것을 의미합니다.

‘borrow’ is similar to the verbs  ‘take’, ‘get’, and ‘receive’.

'빌리다'는 동사 'take', 'get', 'receive'와 유사합니다.

Remember, you borrow from someone.

당신은 누군가에게서 빌린다는 것을 기억하십시오.

Let’s look at some examples.

몇 가지 예를 살펴보겠습니다.

The first sentence says,

‘Could I borrow your pen for a minute, please?’

I’m asking if I can take your pen

The past tense of lend is ‘lent’.

It means to give something to someone for a short period of time

expecting it to be given back.

다시 돌려받기를 기대한다는 뜻입니다.

‘lend’ is similar to the verb ‘give’.

'빌려주다'는 동사 '주다'와 비슷합니다.

Remember, you lend to someone.

In this case, we use ‘lend’

because lend means to give something to someone

knowing that they'll get it back later.

So let's take a look.

It's one word and it's an adjective.

It means something that is commonplace or usual.

It's something that's suitable  to be used on ordinary days.

평소에 사용하기 딱 좋은 아이템이에요.

Let’s look at some examples.

몇 가지 예를 살펴보겠습니다.

The first sentence says,

첫 번째 문장은

‘Since we're just walking around town,  I think I’ll wear my everyday shoes.’

'우리는 동네를 산책하고 있으니 일상용 신발을 신을 것 같아요.'라고 말합니다.

In this case, the word ‘everyday’  is used to describe these shoes.

이 경우 'Everyday'라는 단어는 이 신발을 설명하는 데 사용됩니다.

Here it means these are my usual shoes - you know shoes I wear on a normal day.

여기서는 이것이 제가 평소에 신는 신발이라는 뜻입니다. 제가 평소에 신는 신발이잖아요.

The next sentence says,

‘The worries of everyday life can drag you down.’

Here ‘everyday’ is used to describe worries.

What kind of worries?

Common worries.

Now, I will talk about ‘every day’.

These are two words.

It is an adverbial phrase about time.

시간에 관한 부사어입니다.

It means each day or daily.

매일 또는 매일을 의미합니다.

Let’s look at some examples.

The first sentence says,

‘I need to start going to the gym every day.’

'나는 매일 체육관에 가야 해.'라고

Here, it means Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday all the way up till Sunday

- every single day.

And the next sentence says,

‘You need to study English every day.’

Its form is ‘used to’ + the infinitive.

It's used as a verb.

'used to' expresses that an  activity was a past habit.

'used to'는 어떤 활동이 과거의 습관이었음을 표현합니다.

It was a regular occurrence  at an earlier stage of life

but not anymore.

더 이상은 아닙니다.

Let’s look at some examples.

The first sentence says, ‘I  used to drink green tea.’

However, because it says ‘used  to’ it means not anymore.

그러나 'used to'라고 쓰여 있기 때문에 더 이상은 그렇지 않다는 뜻입니다.

It used to be a regular thing in the past

but I don't drink green tea anymore.

더 이상 녹차를 마시지 않습니다.

The next sentence says, ‘Karen  used to play with dolls.’

Again, Karen played with  dolls a lot maybe in the past

but she doesn't play with dolls anymore

and that's why we used ‘used to’.

Now, I’ll move on to ‘be used to’.

Its form is ‘be’ or ‘get used to’.

It means that you are accustomed to something.

Maybe it's because I’ve been  working at night for a long time.

The next sentence says,

‘She's used to the heat in the summer.’

Here, we use the ‘be’ verb ‘she is’.

여기서는 'be' 동사 'she is'를 사용합니다.

‘She's used to the heat in the summer.’

'그녀는 여름의 더위에 익숙하다.'

She's accustomed to it.

그녀는 그것에 익숙합니다.

Maybe it's because she lived in  a hot place when she was young.

아마도 그녀가 어렸을 때 더운 곳에서 살았기 때문일 것이다.

Now, let's move on to a checkup.

이제 점검으로 넘어가겠습니다.

In this conversation, there are two sentences.

이 대화에는 두 개의 문장이 있습니다.

In one of the sentences, we use ‘used to’.

문장 중 하나에서는 'used to'를 사용합니다.

In the other sentence, we need  to use ‘be’ or ‘get used to’.

다른 문장에서는 'be'나 'get 익숙해지다'를 사용해야 합니다.

Take a moment to think about  where we use these expressions.

잠시 시간을 내어 이 표현을 어디에 사용하는지 생각해 보세요.

‘A’ says, ‘I _blank_ have a better work schedule.’

'A'는 '나는 _blank_ 더 나은 근무 일정을 가지고 있습니다.'라고 말합니다.

‘A’ is trying to express that in the  past he had a better work schedule

A씨는 과거에는 근무 일정이 더 좋았다고 표현하려고 노력하고

but that's not true anymore.

있지만 이제는 그렇지 않습니다.

So we need to use ‘used to’.

그래서 'used to'를 사용해야 합니다.

‘I used to have a better work schedule.’

'저는 근무 일정이 더 좋았습니다.'

‘B’ says, ‘Don't worry. You'll  _blank_ this new schedule soon.’

B씨는 "걱정하지 마세요. 이 새 일정은 곧 _공백_됩니다.'

‘B’ is trying to tell ‘A’

B는 A에게 말하려고 한다.

after some time

시간이 지나면

you'll be accustomed to your new schedule.

새로운 일정에 익숙해질 것입니다.

So ‘B’ can say,

그래서 B는 '

‘Don't worry. You'll be used  to this new schedule soon,’

걱정하지 마세요'라고 말할 수 있다. 곧 새로운 일정에 익숙해질 거에요', '

or ‘Don't worry. you'll get  used to this new schedule soon.’

걱정하지 마세요. 당신은 곧 이 새로운 일정에 익숙해질 것입니다.'

So if we look at this conversation altogether,

그러니까 이 대화를 종합해보면

‘A’ says,

'A'는

‘I used to have a better work schedule.’

'예전에는 근무 일정이 더 좋았던 것 같다'고 말합니다.

‘B’ says,

B씨는

‘Don't worry. You'll get used  to this new schedule soon.’

"걱정하지 마세요. 당신은 곧 이 새로운 일정에 익숙해질 것입니다.'

Now you know the difference  between ‘used to’ and ‘be used to’.

이제 '익숙하다'와 '익숙하다'의 차이를 알았습니다.

이번 영상에서는 비슷하면서도 때로는 헷갈리는 영어 단어 'fun'과 'funny'에 대해 이야기해보겠습니다

‘fun’ and ‘funny’.

My students always confuse these two words,

제 학생들은 항상 이 두 단어를 혼동하기

so I hope to clarify their  meanings and usage in this video.

때문에 이번 영상에서 그 의미와 사용법을 명확히 하고 싶습니다.

And by the end of the video,

you will have mastered these two words.

이 두 단어를 마스터하게 될 것입니다.

Let’s start with the word ‘fun’.

'재미'라는 단어부터 시작해 보겠습니다.

It is an uncountable noun or an adjective.

셀 수 없는 명사이거나 형용사입니다.

It means pleasure and enjoyment.

즐거움과 즐거움을 의미합니다.

Let's take a look at some examples.

몇 가지 예를 살펴보겠습니다.

The first sentence says,

첫 문장은

‘I hope you have fun.’

'즐거웠으면 좋겠다'입니다.

In this case, it's an uncountable noun.

이 경우에는 셀 수 없는 명사입니다.

It's something that you can have.

그것은 당신이 가질 수 있는 것입니다.

It means a good time.

좋은 시간을 의미합니다.

‘I hope you have fun’ means  I hope you have a good time.

'즐거웠으면 좋겠다'는 말은 '즐거웠으면 좋겠다'는 뜻이다.

‘Studying English is fun.’

'영어 공부는 재미있어요.'

In this case, ‘fun’ is used as an adjective.

이 경우에는 'fun'이 형용사로 사용됩니다.

It means an enjoyable time.

즐거운 시간을 의미합니다.

Studying English is an enjoyable  time or it's very enjoyable.

영어를 공부하는 것은 즐거운 시간이거나 매우 즐거운 시간입니다.

Now I will talk about ‘funny’.

이제 '웃기다'에 대해 이야기하겠습니다.

It's an adjective which means causing laughter.

웃기다는 뜻의 형용사입니다.

We don't use ‘funny’ to mean enjoyable.

우리는 'funny'를 즐겁다는 의미로 사용하지 않습니다.

So ‘fun’ and ‘funny’ are a  little different in meaning.

그래서 'fun'과 'funny'는 의미가 조금 다릅니다.

So be careful.

그러니 조심해.

Let’s look at some example sentences.

몇 가지 예문을 살펴보겠습니다.

‘He told a funny joke.’

'그가 재미있는 농담을 했어요.'

This joke is meant to be funny.

이 농담은 웃기기 위한 것입니다.

It's meant to make people laugh.

사람들을 웃게 만들려는 의도입니다.

And so we describe it as funny.

그래서 우리는 그것을 재미있다고 묘사합니다.

‘That is a funny TV show.’

'재미있는 TV쇼네요.'

A lot of comedy TV shows make  people laugh. They have jokes.

많은 코미디 TV 프로그램이 사람들을 웃게 만듭니다. 농담이 있어요.

And so again, we can describe it as funny.

그리고 다시, 우리는 그것을 재미있다고 설명할 수 있습니다.

Now, let's do a checkup.

이제 점검을 해보겠습니다.

In this conversation, there are two sentences.

In one of the sentences, we should use ‘fun’.

The word ‘have’ is a clue that we need a noun.

Remember, ‘fun’ can be a noun.

'재미'는 명사가 될 수 있다는 점을 기억하세요.

‘Did you have fun at the circus?’

'서커스에서 재미있었나요?'

or did you have a good time at the circus?

아니면 서커스에서 즐거운 시간을 보냈나요?

Person ‘B’ says, ‘Yes, the  clowns were so _blank_.’

'B'라는 사람은 '네, 광대가 너무 _공백_'이라고 말합니다.

Clowns make people laugh. They do silly things.

광대는 사람들을 웃게 만듭니다. 그들은 어리석은 짓을 합니다.

So here, the word to use is ‘funny’.

그래서 여기서 사용할 단어는 '재미있다'입니다.

‘Yes, the clowns were so funny.’

'그래, 광대들은 정말 재미있었어.'

Now you know the difference  between ‘fun’ and ‘funny’.

이제 '재미있다'와 '재밌다'의 차이를 아셨을 겁니다.

They can be confusing, so please  take the time to use them correctly.

These two words are commonly confused in English,

understanding of the difference  and when to use these words.

차이점과 이 단어를 언제 사용해야 하는지 잘 이해하게 될 것입니다

Let’s get started.

. 시작하자.

Let’s start with ‘hear’. It is an irregular verb. 

'듣다'부터 시작해보자. 불규칙 동사입니다.

The past tense is ‘heard’.

과거형은 '들었다'입니다.

When you hear something, noise  is coming into your ears.

뭔가를 들으면 소음이 귀에 들어옵니다.

You are not focused on the noise.

당신은 소음에 집중하지 않습니다.

When you are walking down the street,

길을 걸을 때

you may hear people talking, you may hear birds,

사람들이 말하는 소리, 새소리,

you may hear noise from the traffic,

교통 소음 등

you hear all different noises.

다양한 소음을 들을 수 있습니다.

Let’s look at some example sentences.

몇 가지 예문을 살펴보겠습니다.

The first sentence says,

첫 번째 문장은

‘I hear someone knocking on my door.’

'누군가 내 문을 두드리는 소리가 들립니다.'입니다.

So the sound of the knocking or the noise  of the knocking is coming into your ears,

그래서 두드리는 소리나 두드리는 소리가 귀에 들어와서

so you can hear it.

들을 수 있게 되는 것입니다.

The next sentence says,

다음 문장은

‘He heard the thunder last night.’

'그는 어젯밤에 천둥 소리를 들었습니다.'라고 되어 있습니다.

Thunder is very loud, so again you  will hear the noise of the thunder. 

천둥 소리가 너무 커서 다시 천둥 소리가 들립니다.

Now, I will talk about ‘listen’.

이제 '듣다'에 대해 이야기하겠습니다.

It is a regular verb

일반동사

and the past tense is ‘listened’.

이며 과거시제는 '듣다'입니다.

It is usually followed by the preposition ‘to’.

보통 전치사 'to'가 뒤에 옵니다.

So you say ‘listen to’.

그래서 '듣다'라고 하더군요.

When you are listening, you  are trying to hear something.

당신이 듣고 있을 때, 당신은 무엇인가를 들으려고 노력하고 있는 것입니다.

You are focused. And you really want to hear something clearly.

당신은 집중하고 있습니다. 그리고 당신은 정말로 무언가를 명확하게 듣고 싶어합니다.

You pay attention to listen.

주의를 기울여 들으십시오.

Right now, you are listening to me.

지금 당신은 내 말을 듣고 있습니다.

Let’s look at some example sentences.

몇 가지 예문을 살펴보겠습니다.

The first sentence says,

첫 번째 문장은

‘I always listen carefully  to what my teacher says.’

'나는 항상 선생님의 말씀을 잘 듣는다'입니다.

In this example, ‘listen’ is just  like focusing or paying attention to.

이 예에서 '듣다'는 초점을 맞추거나 주의를 기울이는 것과 같습니다.

The next sentence says,

다음 문장은

‘She usually listens to music before bed.’

'그녀는 보통 자기 전에 음악을 듣는다'입니다.

This case also talks about focusing  on the music with their ears.

이 사례는 귀로 음악에 집중하는 것에 대해서도 이야기합니다.

Now, let's do a checkup.

이제 점검을 해보겠습니다.

We need to use ‘listen’ and ‘hear’

이 문장의 빈칸을 채우려면

to fill in the blanks in this sentence.

'듣다'와 '듣다'를 사용해야 합니다

Take a moment to think about where to  use ‘listen’ and where to use ‘hear’. 

. '듣다'를 어디에 쓸지, '듣다'를 어디에 쓸지 잠시 생각해 보세요.

The sentence says,

그 문장은

‘I am _blank_ to their conversation.’

'나는 그들의 대화에 _공백_입니다'라고 말합니다.

Which one means to pay  attention to or to focus on? 

주의를 기울이다, 집중하다라는 뜻은 무엇인가요?

That's ‘listen’.

바로 '듣기'입니다.

So we need to put ‘listen’ in the first blank.

그래서 첫 번째 빈칸에 'listen'을 넣어야 합니다.

‘I am _blank_ to their conversation.’

'나는 그들의 대화에 _공백_입니다.'

You'll notice it says ‘I am’

'I am'이라고 되어 있는 것을 볼 수 있으므로

so we need to use the present  continuous tense ‘listening’.

'listening'이라는 현재진행형을 사용해야 합니다.

‘I am listening to their conversation.’

'나는 그들의 대화를 듣고 있다.'

The second part of this sentence says,

이 문장의 두 번째 부분은

‘but I can't _blank_ exactly  what they are saying.’

'그러나 나는 그들이 말하는 것을 정확히 _공백_할 수 없습니다'라고 말합니다.

Maybe it's noisy outside so it's hard to hear. Remember, ‘hear’ means to take  

아마도 밖이 시끄러워서 듣기 어려울 수도 있습니다. 기억하세요, '듣다'는

in the noise with your ears, so the correct answer for the second part is

소리를 귀로 듣는다는 뜻이므로 두 번째 부분의 정답은

‘I can't hear exactly what they are saying.’

'그들이 말하는 것을 정확히 들을 수 없습니다'입니다.

Now you know the difference  between ‘hear’ and ‘listen’. 

이제 '듣다'와 '듣다'의 차이점을 알게 되었습니다.

Let’s get started.

시작하자.

First, let’s start with ‘look’.

먼저 '보기'부터 시작해 보겠습니다.

It is used as a regular verb.

일반 동사로 사용됩니다.

We use ‘look’ when we direct our eyes at something

우리는 어떤 것에 시선을 집중

and pay attention to it.

하고 주의를 기울일 때 'look'을 사용합니다.

Let’s look at some examples.

몇 가지 예를 살펴보겠습니다.

The first sentence says,

첫 번째 문장은

‘Look at this old photo of me.’

'이 오래된 내 사진을 보세요'입니다.

I am directing your eyes to the photo.

나는 당신의 눈을 사진으로 향하고 있습니다.

I want you to pay attention to it with your eyes.

눈으로 주목해보시길 바랍니다.

‘Look! It's snowing outside.’

'바라보다! 밖에 눈이 내리고 있어요.'

In the same way I want someone to pay  attention with their eyes at the snow outside.

마찬가지로 누군가가 밖에 눈이 내리는 것을 눈으로 주목해 주기를 바랍니다.

Now, I will talk about ‘see’.

이제 '보다'에 대해 이야기하겠습니다.

It is an irregular verb.

불규칙 동사입니다.

The past tense of ‘see’ is ‘saw’.

'보다'의 과거형은 '보았습니다'입니다.

You should use ‘see’ when you notice or become aware of something with your eyes.

눈으로 무엇인가를 알아차리거나 깨닫게 되었을 때 'see'를 사용해야 합니다.

You are not looking for it  but you suddenly see it.

당신은 그것을 찾고 있지 않지만 갑자기 그것을 보게 됩니다.

Let’s look at some examples.

몇 가지 예를 살펴보겠습니다.

Let's look at the first sentence.

첫 번째 문장을 살펴보겠습니다.

It says, ‘I see an airplane in the sky.’

'하늘에 비행기가 보입니다.'라고 적혀 있어요.

The person didn't know that  there was an airplane in the sky

그 사람은 하늘에 비행기가 있다는 것을 몰랐지만

but they saw it with their eyes.

눈으로 보았습니다.

So, ‘I see an airplane in the sky.’

그래서 '하늘에 비행기가 보인다.'

‘She suddenly saw a dog on the street.’

'갑자기 길에서 개를 봤어요.'

In this example, ‘see’ is  used in the past tense, ‘saw’.

이 예문에서는 'see'가 과거형 'saw'로 사용되었습니다.

‘She suddenly saw a dog on the street.’

'갑자기 길에서 개를 봤어요.'

She noticed it with her eyes.

그녀는 그것을 눈으로 알아차렸다.

Now, I will talk about ‘watch’.

이제 '시계'에 대해 이야기하겠습니다.

It is a regular verb.

일반 동사입니다.

‘watch’ means to look at something for a long time

'watch'는 어떤 것을 오랫동안 바라보고

and to pay attention to it.

주의를 기울이는 것을 의미합니다.

Right now, you are watching my video.

지금 당신은 내 영상을 보고 계십니다.

Let’s look at some example sentences.

몇 가지 예문을 살펴보겠습니다.

The first sentence says, ‘I  love to watch my cat play.’

첫 번째 문장은 '나는 고양이가 노는 모습을 보는 것을 좋아합니다.'라고 되어 있습니다.

This is something I like to do for a long time

이것은 내가 오랫동안 좋아하는 일입니다

- look at and watch this happening.

. 이 일이 일어나는 것을 보고 지켜보세요.

The next sentence says, ‘I watched  the football game last night.’

다음 문장은 '어젯밤에 축구 경기를 봤어요'입니다. 또,

Again, it's something that you watch  or pay attention to with your eyes

오랜 시간 동안 눈으로 관찰하거나 주의를 기울이는 것입니다

for a long period of time.

You can use ‘watch’ or ‘see’ when we  talk about movies, TV, and concerts.

영화, TV, 콘서트에 대해 말할 때 'watch' 또는 'see'를 사용할 수 있습니다.

You can say, ‘I watched a movie last night’

'어젯밤에 영화를 봤어요'라고 말할 수도

or you can say, ‘I saw a movie last night’.

있고 '어젯밤에 영화를 봤어요'라고 말할 수도 있습니다.

So the rules are not so strict in spoken English

따라서 구어체 영어에서는 규칙이 그리 엄격하지 않습니다.

about watching or seeing a movie or tv show.

영화나 TV 쇼를 보거나 보는 것에 대해.

Let's do a checkup.

점검을 해보자.

In this conversation, there are two sentences.

이 대화에는 두 개의 문장이 있습니다.

In these sentences, we should use  the verbs ‘watch’, ‘see’, and ‘look’.

이 문장에서는 동사 'watch', 'see', 'look'을 사용해야 합니다.

Take a moment to think about  where we use these verbs.

잠시 시간을 내어 이 동사들을 어디에 사용하는지 생각해 보세요.

‘A’ says, ‘_blank_ at the TV.’

'A'는 'TV에서 _blank_'라고 말합니다.

‘A’ is directing ‘B’'s eyes to  use his eyes, to look at the TV.

A는 B의 눈을 TV를 보도록 지시하고 있습니다.

So again, ‘A’ says, ‘Look at the TV.  You can _blank_ that new TV show.’

그래서 또 A씨는 'TV를 봐라. 그 새 TV 쇼를 _공백_할 수 있습니다.'

So because this is a TV show

따라서 이 프로그램은 TV 쇼이기 때문에

you can say ‘see’ or ‘watch’.

'보다' 또는 '보다'라고 말할 수 있습니다.

In this case, let's use ‘watch’.

이 경우에는 'watch'를 사용해 보겠습니다.

‘You can watch that new TV show.’

'새 TV 프로그램을 시청할 수 있습니다.'

And ‘B’ says, ‘Oh I _blank_ it already.’

그리고 'B'는 '아, 이미 _공백_'이라고 말합니다.

Since we already used ‘watch’, let's use ‘see’.

이미 'watch'를 사용했으므로 'see'를 사용하겠습니다.

In this case, the past tense.

이 경우에는 과거형입니다.

‘B’ says, ‘Oh, I saw it already.’

B씨는 '아, 벌써 봤어요'라고 말했다.

Now you know the difference  between ‘look’, ‘see’, and ‘watch’.

이제 '보다', '보다', '보다'의 차이점을 알았습니다.

This video is not enough to  master these expressions.
